Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that currently has an unknown cause and pathogenesis, and is associated with many complications and a high disability rate. The neutrophil extracellular trap network (NETs) is a newly discovered mechanism that allows neutrophils to capture and kill pathogens. Multiple studies in recent years have highlighted its relevance to the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. Despite the growing number of studies indicating the crucial role of NETs in RA, there has been no bibliometric review of research hotspots and trends in this area. In this study, we retrieved articles related to NETs in RA from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database from 1985 to 2023 and used visualization tools such as Citespace, VOSviewer, Tableau Public, and Microsoft Office Excel 2021 to analyze the data. After screening, we included a total of 416 publications involving 2,334 researchers from 1,357 institutions in 167 countries/regions, with relevant articles published in 219 journals. The U.S., China, and Germany are the top 3 countries/regions with 124, 57, and 37 publications respectively. Mariana J. Kaplan is the most published author, and journals such as Frontiers in Immunology and International Journal of Molecular Sciences have had a significant impact on research in this field. The clinical application of PAD enzymes and their inhibitors, and the drug development of NETs as therapeutic targets for RA is a trend for future research. Our study provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis and summary of NETs in RA publications, which will aid researchers in conducting further scientific research.

BACKGROUND
Peripheral blood monocyte counts have been associated with poor outcomes in interstitial lung disease (ILD). However, studies are limited by variable biomarker thresholds, analytic approaches and heterogenous populations. This systematic review and meta-analysis characterised the relationship between monocytes and clinical outcomes in ILD.
METHODS
Electronic database searches were performed. Two reviewers screened abstracts and extracted data. Pooled estimates (hazard ratios (HRs)) of monocyte count thresholds were calculated for their association with mortality using ≥0.6×10 and >0.9×10 cells·L for unadjusted models and ≥0.95×10 cells·L for adjusted models, using random effects, with heterogeneity and bias assessed. Disease progression associated with monocytes >0.9×10cells·L was also calculated.
RESULTS
Of 3279 abstracts, 13 were included in the systematic review and eight in the meta-analysis. The pooled unadjusted HR for mortality for monocyte counts ≥0.6×10 cells·L was 1.71 (95% CI 1.34-2.19, p<0.001, I=0%) and for monocyte counts >0.90×10 cells·L it was 2.44 (95% CI 1.53-3.87, p=0.0002, I=52%). The pooled adjusted HR for mortality for monocyte counts ≥0.95×10 cells·L was 1.93 (95% CI 1.24-3.01, p=0.0038 I=69%). The pooled HR for disease progression associated with increased monocyte counts was 1.83 (95% CI 1.40-2.39, p<0.0001, I=28%).
CONCLUSIONS
Peripheral blood monocyte counts were associated with an increased risk of mortality and disease progression in patients with ILD.

OBJECTIVE
The purpose of the systematic review is to verify the presence of PANoptosis in periodontitis based on the published literatures studying cell death in periodontitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
We conducted a comprehensive review of literature studying the types of cell death in vitro cellular experiments, in vivo rodent studies and clinical studies from three major databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The present systematic review was recorded in the PROSPERO database, under registration number CRD42022383456.
RESULTS
In total, 51 articles were included in this study. Our analysis of in vitro cell models revealed that pyroptosis, necroptosis, and apoptosis could be induced by periodontal pathogens in macrophages, fibroblasts, stem cells, and periodontal ligament cells. Furthermore, three types of cell death were detected in in vivo rodent periodontitis models. Clinical studies on human periodontitis tissue specimens and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) showed that some key proteins related to pyroptosis, necroptosis, and apoptosis were elevated in periodontitis.
CONCLUSIONS
Various studies have established similar in vivo and in vitro models with three modes of death detected under the same conditions, revealing complex interactions between different types of cell death pathways in periodontitis and the potential for PANoptosis to occur in periodontitis.

BACKGROUND
The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has shown promising results as a diagnostic tool for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after total joint arthroplasty. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the utility of NLR in the diagnosis of PJI.
METHODS
We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception up to 2022 and evaluated the quality of the included literature.
RESULTS
Based on the 12 eligible studies, NLR levels were significantly higher in patients who had PJI compared to those who had aseptic loosening (standard mean difference (SMD) = 1.05, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 0.71 to 1.40, P < .001). In the subgroup analysis according to type of PJI, NLR levels were significantly higher in patients who had either acute (SMD = 1.04, 95% CI = 0.05 to 2.03, P < .001) or chronic PJI (SMD = 1.08, 95% CI = 0.55 to 1.61, P < .001), compared to those who had aseptic loosening. According to type of arthroplasty, NLR levels were significantly higher in patients who had either total knee arthroplasty (SMD = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.48 to 2.13, P < .001) or total hip arthroplasty (SMD = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.54 to 1.98, P < .001) compared to aseptic loosening. The pooled sensitivity of the 12 studies was 0.73 (95% CI, 0.65 to 0.79), and the pooled specificity was 0.75 (95% CI, 0.71 to 0.78). The pooled positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and diagnostic odds ratio of NLR were 2.94 (95% CI = 2.44 to 3.54), 0.35 (95% CI = 0.27 to 0.46), and 8.26 (95% CI = 5.42 to 12.58), respectively.
CONCLUSION
In summary, this meta-analysis indicates that NLR is a reliable marker in the diagnosis of PJI.

Neutrophil to Lymphocyte ratio as a predictor for immune-related adverse events in cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND
The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in cancer treatment has led to an increase in immune-related adverse events (irAEs), which can cause treatment discontinuation and even fatal reactions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the peripheral biomarker neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in predicting irAEs.
METHODS
A systematic search of databases was conducted to identify studies on the predictive value of NLR for irAEs. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was used to compare continuous NLR, while crude odds ratios (ORs) were calculated for categorized NLR if adjusted ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were not provided in the original study.
RESULTS
The meta-analysis included 47 studies with a total of 11,491 cancer patients treated with ICIs. The baseline continuous NLR was significantly lower in patients with irAEs compared to those without (SMD=-1.55, 95%CI=-2.64 to -0.46, P=0.006). Similarly, categorized NLR showed that lower baseline NLR was associated with increased irAEs (OR=0.55, 95%CI=0.41-0.73, P<0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed that the OR for predicting irAEs with NLR cut-off values of 3 and 5 was 0.4 and 0.59, respectively. Interestingly, increased baseline NLR was associated with a higher incidence of immune-related liver injury (OR=2.44, 95%CI=1.23-4.84, I2 = 0%, P=0.010).
CONCLUSION
Our study suggests that lower baseline NLR is associated with a higher risk of overall irAEs. However, further studies are needed to determine the best cut-off value and explore the efficacy of NLR in predicting specific types of irAEs.

INTRODUCTION
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and liver fibrosis are the most common complications of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aim to analyze the current literature to evaluate the association of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with NASH and fibrosis in patients with NAFLD.
METHODS
PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were used to conduct a systematic search for relevant publications published before May 24, 2022. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used for quality assessment.
RESULTS
Thirteen studies were included in our study. The pooled results showed that NAFLD patients with significant NASH had elevated levels of NLR compared to those with nonsignificant or without NASH (SMD = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.59-1.39, < 0.001). The pooled sensitivity and specificity of NLR were 78.16% (95% CI = 73.70%-82.04%), and 76.93% (95% CI = 70.22%-82.50%), respectively. In addition, NAFLD patients with significant liver fibrosis had elevated levels of NLR compared to those with nonsignificant or without fibrosis (SMD = 1.59, 95% CI = 0.76-2.43, < 0.001). The pooled sensitivity and specificity of NLR were 82.62% (95% CI = 70.235%-90.55%) and 81.22% (95% CI = 75.62%-85.78%), respectively.
CONCLUSION
Our findings support NLR to be a promising biomarker that can be readily integrated into clinical settings to aid in the prediction and prevention of NASH and fibrosis among patients with NAFLD.

Activated neutrophils release a range of inflammatory products that represent potential biomarkers, and there is interest in the prognostic value of these in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients. We conducted a systematic review to examine neutrophil-enriched biomarkers and the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with ACS. We identified twenty-seven studies including 17,831 patients with ACS. The most studied biomarkers were neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and myeloperoxidase (MPO). Meta-analyses showed that elevated NGAL was associated with higher MACE rates (unadjusted risk ratio (RR) 1.52, 95% CI 1.12-2.06, p = 0.006) as were elevated MPO levels (unadjusted RR 1.61, 95% CI 1.22-2.13, p = 0.01). There was limited data suggesting that increased levels of calprotectin, proteinase-3 and double-stranded DNA were also associated with MACE. These results suggest that higher levels of neutrophil-enriched biomarkers may be predictive of MACE in patients with ACS, although higher-quality studies are needed to confirm these observations.

INTRODUCTION
One of the most intriguing aspects of male reproductive physiology is the ability of the epididymis to prevent the mounting of immune responses against the onslaught of foreign antigens carried by spermatozoa while initiating very efficient immune responses versus stressors. Epithelial clear cells are strategically positioned to work in a concerted manner with region-specific heterogeneous subsets of mononuclear phagocytes to survey the epididymal barrier and regulate the balance between inflammation and immune tolerance in the post-testicular environment.
OBJECTIVE
This review aims to describe how clear cells communicate with mononuclear phagocytes to contribute to the unique immune environment in which sperm mature and are stored in the epididymis.
MATERIALS/METHODS
A comprehensive systematic review was performed. PubMed was searched for articles specific to clear cells, mononuclear phagocytes, and epididymis. Articles that did not specifically address the target material were excluded.
RESULTS
In this review, we discuss the unexpected roles of clear cells, including the transfer of new proteins to spermatozoa via extracellular vesicles and nanotubes as they transit along the epididymal tubule; and we summarize the immune phenotype, morphology, and antigen capturing, processing, and presenting abilities of mononuclear phagocytes. Moreover, we present the current knowledge of immunoregulatory mechanisms by which clear cells and mononuclear phagocytes may contribute to the immune-privileged environment optimal for sperm maturation and storage.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION
Notably, we provide an in-depth characterization of clear cell-mononuclear phagocyte communication networks in the steady-state epididymis and in the presence of injury. This review highlights crucial concepts of mucosal immunology and cellcell interactions, all of which are critical but understudied facets of human male reproductive health.

BACKGROUND
Inborn errors of immunity (IEIs) are considered significant challenges for children with IEIs, their families, and their medical providers. Infections are the most common complication of IEIs and children can acquire coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) even when protective measures are taken.
OBJECTIVES
To estimate the incidence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in children with IEIs and analyse the demographic parameters, clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes in children with IEIs with COVID-19 illness.
METHODS
For this systematic review, we searched ProQuest, Medline, Embase, PubMed, CINAHL, Wiley online library, Scopus and Nature through the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses (PRISMA) guideline for studies on the development of COVID-19 in children with IEIs, published from December 1, 2019 to February 28, 2023, with English language restriction.
RESULTS
Of the 1095 papers that were identified, 116 articles were included in the systematic review (73 case report, 38 cohort 4 case-series and 1 case-control studies). Studies involving 710 children with IEIs with confirmed COVID-19 were analyzed. Among all 710 IEIs pediatric cases who acquired SARS-CoV-2, some children were documented to be admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) (n = 119, 16.8%), intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation (n = 87, 12.2%), suffered acute respiratory distress syndrome (n = 98, 13.8%) or died (n = 60, 8.4%). Overall, COVID-19 in children with different IEIs patents resulted in no or low severity of disease in more than 76% of all included cases (COVID-19 severity: asymptomatic = 105, mild = 351, or moderate = 88). The majority of children with IEIs received treatment for COVID-19 (n = 579, 81.5%). Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) due to COVID-19 in children with IEIs occurred in 103 (14.5%). Fatality in children with IEIs with COVID-19 was reported in any of the included IEIs categories for cellular and humoral immunodeficiencies (n = 19, 18.6%), immune dysregulatory diseases (n = 17, 17.9%), innate immunodeficiencies (n = 5, 10%), bone marrow failure (n = 1, 14.3%), complement deficiencies (n = 1, 9.1%), combined immunodeficiencies with associated or syndromic features (n = 7, 5.5%), phagocytic diseases (n = 3, 5.5%), autoinflammatory diseases (n = 2, 3%) and predominantly antibody deficiencies (n = 5, 2.5%). Mortality was COVID-19-related in a considerable number of children with IEIs (29/60, 48.3%). The highest ICU admission and fatality rates were observed in cases belonging to cellular and humoral immunodeficiencies (26.5% and 18.6%) and immune dysregulatory diseases (35.8% and 17.9%) groups, especially in children infected with SARS-CoV-2 who suffered severe combined immunodeficiency (28.6% and 23.8%), combined immunodeficiency (25% and 15%), familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (40% and 20%), X-linked lymphoproliferative diseases-1 (75% and 75%) and X-linked lymphoproliferative diseases-2 (50% and 50%) compared to the other IEIs cases.
CONCLUSION
Children with IEIs infected with SARS-CoV-2 may experience higher rates of ICU admission and mortality in comparison with the immunocompetent pediatric populations. Underlying immune defects does seem to be independent risk factors for severe SARS-CoV-2 infection in children with IEIs, a number of children with SCID and CID were reported to have prolonged infections-though the number of patients is small-but especially immune dysregulation diseases (XLP1 and XLP2) and innate immunodeficiencies impairing type I interferon signalling (IFNAR1, IFNAR2 and TBK1).

BACKGROUND
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by neutrophils airway infiltration. It is currently known that Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is an important pro-inflammatory factor. It can promote the accumulation of neutrophils and participate in the chronic inflammatory process of COPD. However, the value of IL-17 levels in the diagnosis and assessment of COPD remains controversial. In view of this, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess its relevance.
METHODS
We searched databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Embase to extract original research.
RESULTS
A total of 10 studies with 2268 participants were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that the level of serum IL-17 in patients with stable COPD was significantly higher than that in healthy controls (standard mean difference SMD, 1.59, 95% CI 0.84-2.34; <0.001). Compared with the stable COPD group, the serum IL-17 level in acute exacerbation (AECOPD) was significantly higher (SMD, 1.78, 95% CI 1.22-2.33; <0.001). The level of IL-17 in sputum of COPD patients was also higher than that of healthy controls (SMD, 2.03, 95% CI 0.74-3.31; <0.001).
CONCLUSION
Our results showed that IL-17 levels were elevated in serum and sputum in COPD patients compared with healthy controls, and IL-17 levels increased with disease progression. IL-17 serves as a potential biomarker to indicate the persistence of neutrophilic inflammation and exacerbation of COPD.
