J Strength Cond Res 38(7): 1341-1349, 2024-Integrating strength and endurance training in a single exercise session, even on separate days, can be physically demanding and time-consuming. Therefore, there is a growing interest in identifying efficient training methods that can concurrently enhance cardiovascular and neuromuscular performance through a singular training modality. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the effects of aerobic training with blood flow restriction (AT + BFR) on muscle hypertrophy and strength gains in healthy individuals. Our study was registered at PROSPERO and used multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science), seeking clinical trials that examined AT + BFR influence on muscle hypertrophy and strength gains in individuals aged 18-60 years and comparing with aerobic training without BFR. The risk of bias and method quality were assessed using the ROB2.0 tool and PEDro scale, respectively, and the quality of evidence was evaluated with the GRADE method. A random-effects model was used for meta-analysis, and standardized mean difference (SMD) was calculated for each outcome. Of 4,462 records, 29 full texts were assessed for eligibility, with 7 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. The results indicated that AT + BFR was more beneficial for inducing muscle hypertrophy than aerobic training without BFR (SMD [95% CI] = 0.86 [0.37-1.35]; I2 = 42%). Furthermore, AT + BFR was associated with greater improvements in muscle strength (SMD [95% CI] = 0.41 [0.10-0.72]; I2 = 0%). Despite the generally high risk of bias for both outcomes, these encouraging findings underscore the clinical significance of AT + BFR as a compelling tool for enhancing neuromuscular parameters.

BACKGROUND
Nutrition guidance for athletes must consider a range of variables to effectively support individuals in meeting energy and nutrient needs. Resistance exercise is a widely adopted training method in athlete preparation and rehabilitation and therefore is one such variable that will influence nutrition guidance. Given its prominence, the capacity to meaningfully quantify resistance exercise energy expenditure will assist practitioners and researchers in providing nutrition guidance. However, the significant contribution of anaerobic metabolism makes quantifying energy expenditure of resistance exercise challenging.
OBJECTIVE
The aim of this scoping review was to investigate the methods used to assess resistance exercise energy expenditure.
METHODS
A literature search of Medline, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL and Web of Science identified studies that included an assessment of resistance exercise energy expenditure. Quality appraisal of included studies was performed using the Rosendal Scale.
RESULTS
A total of 19,867 studies were identified, with 166 included after screening. Methods to assess energy expenditure included indirect calorimetry (n = 136), blood lactate analysis (n = 25), wearable monitors (n = 31) and metabolic equivalents (n = 4). Post-exercise energy expenditure was measured in 76 studies. The reported energy expenditure values varied widely between studies.
CONCLUSIONS
Indirect calorimetry is widely used to estimate energy expenditure. However, given its limitations in quantifying glycolytic contribution, indirect calorimetry during and immediately following exercise combined with measures of blood lactate are likely required to better quantify total energy expenditure. Due to the cumbersome equipment and technical expertise required, though, along with the physical restrictions the equipment places on participants performing particular resistance exercises, indirect calorimetry is likely impractical for use outside of the laboratory setting, where metabolic equivalents may be a more appropriate method.

Upper body pain, particularly in the limbs and shoulders, is a common symptom among patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and wheelchair users. Despite the focus on resistance muscle training as a suitable intervention for SCI individuals, findings across different populations and conditions have been inconsistent. We conducted a systematic review to elucidate the correlations among exercise interventions, muscle strength enhancement, and pain reduction. A comprehensive literature search was performed using the keywords "spinal cord injury," "pain," "exercise," "disability," "paraplegia," and "tetraplegia" across the DBpia, EMBASE, PubMed, and Science Direct databases. From 191 identified articles, 13 studies (1 from Korea and 12 from other countries) were selected for analysis. The results indicate that exercise interventions are effective in reducing pain in patients with SCI, with a particular emphasis on alleviating shoulder pain. Exercise is essential for pain reduction in patients with SCI, especially those experiencing shoulder pain. However, there is a notable lack of experimental research focusing primarily on pain. The development of appropriate measurement instruments is crucial for the prevention and relief of pain in this patient population.

INTRODUCTION
According to the PRISMA guidelines, this systematic review of randomized controlled trials examined whether Panax ginseng supplementation reduces resistance to exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD).
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION
Web of Science, SPORTDiscus and Medline databases were searched from the 16 of December 2021 to the 18 of February 2022. Inclusion criteria were studies in humans consuming Panax ginseng that employed resistance training as the damaging muscle protocol and measured markers implicated in the etiology of EIMD (muscle damage, muscle function and muscle soreness). The PEDro risk of bias assessment tool was used to appraise the studies critically.
RESULTS
Conflicting evidence was evident in markers of muscle damage, muscle function and muscle soreness. The quality assessment suggested that all studies had some level of bias.
CONCLUSIONS
From 180, six studies were included in the systematic review. The main findings suggest that Panax ginseng does not attenuate markers of EIMD following resistance training. However, research is still preliminary. Adequately powered sample sizes and well-controlled studies are warranted to clarify Panax ginseng's efficacy.

Effect of open vs. closed kinetic chain exercises in ACL rehabilitation on knee joint pain, laxity, extensor muscles strength, and function: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common among physically active individuals, often requiring ACL reconstruction (ACLR) for recovery. Rehabilitating these injuries involves determining the appropriate timing for initiating open kinetic chain (OKC) exercises. Although OKC exercises are effective post-ACLR, their use in rehabilitation remains a subject of debate. Therefore, this study aims to conduct a systematic review to determine whether OKC or closed kinetic chain (CKC) exercises result in differences in laxity, strength of the knee extensor muscle group, function, and functional performance in ACL rehabilitation. Five electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled between-group trials (RCTs). Two reviewers independently evaluated the risk of bias using the PEDro scale. We performed a meta-analysis using a random-effects model or calculated mean differences (fixed-effect) where appropriate. Certainty of evidence was judged using the GRADE approach. The systematic literature search yielded 480 articles, of which 9 met the inclusion criteria. The evidence for all outcomes ranged from very low to low certainty. Across all comparisons, inconsistent results were found in outcome measures related to knee function between OKC and CKC exercises post-ACLR. A significant increase in quadriceps isokinetic strength was found in post-ACLR and ACL-deficient knees in favor of OKC exercises at 3 ( = 0.03) and 4 ( = 0.008) months, respectively. A significant decrease in knee laxity was observed in ACL-deficient knees in favor of OKC at 10 weeks ( = 0.01), although inconsistency was noted at 4 months. Finally, a significant decrease in pain was found in favor of early OKC compared to late OKC ( < 0.003). Additionally, in ACL-deficient knees, low load resistance training (LLRT) OKC showed no significant laxity difference compared to controls ( > 0.05). In contrast, high load resistance training (HLRT) OKC had less laxity than controls at 6 weeks ( = 0.02) but not at 12 weeks ( > 0.05). OKC exercises appear to be superior to CKC for improving quadriceps strength 3-4 months post-injury, whether as a part of conservative or post-surgery rehabilitation. On the other hand, OKC exercises seem to be either superior or equally effective to CKC for improving knee laxity, thus presenting their importance in being included in a rehabilitation protocol from the initial phase.

Effects of combined aerobic and resistance training on glycemic control, blood pressure, inflammation, cardiorespiratory fitness and quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes and overweight/obesity: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND
Structured aerobic or resistance training alone seems to be a beneficial tool for improving glucose homeostasis, chronic systemic inflammation, resting cardiovascular function, and mental health in people with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The aim of the present study was to synthesize the available data on the effectiveness of combined aerobic and resistance training (CART) on glycemic control, blood pressure, inflammation, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and quality of life (QoL) in overweight and obese individuals with T2DM.
METHODS
A database search was carried out in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar from inception up to May 2023. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess eligible studies, and the GRADE method to evaluate the reliability of evidence. A random-effects model was used, and data were analyzed using standardized mean differences and 95% confidence intervals. The study protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (ID: CRD42022355612).
RESULTS
A total of 21,612 studies were retrieved; 20 studies were included, and data were extracted from 1,192 participants (mean age: 57 ± 7 years) who met the eligibility criteria. CART demonstrated significant improvements in body mass index, glycated hemoglobin, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, CRF, and QoL compared to ST. These findings highlight the significance of exercise interventions such as CART as essential elements within comprehensive diabetes management strategies, ultimately enhancing overall health outcomes in individuals with T2DM and overweight/obesity.No differences were found in resting heart rate between CART and ST. An uncertain risk of bias and poor quality of evidence were found among the eligible studies.
CONCLUSION
These outcomes show clear evidence considering the positive role of CART in inducing beneficial changes in various cardiometabolic and mental health-related indicators in patients with T2DM and concurrent overweight/obesity. More studies with robust methodological design are warranted to examine the dose-response relationship, training parameters configuration, and mechanisms behind these positive adaptations.

Effect of aerobic training versus resistance training for improving cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition in middle-aged to older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the influence of aerobic training (AT) versus resistance training (RT) on cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition in middle-aged to older adults. Four electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL, and web of science, as well as reference lists of included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were searched from inception to April 2024. Data were pooled by the inverse-variance method and reported as mean differences (MDs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). Thirty-eight RCTs, with a pooled sample of 1682 participants, met our inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis revealed that AT significantly improved VO/ (MD = 1.80, 95 % CI: 0.96 to 2.64, p < 0.0001) and 6-MWT (MD = 18.58, 95 % CI: 10.38 to 26.78, p < 0.00001), and significantly decreased body mass (MD = -1.23, 95 % CI: -1.98 to -0.47, p = 0.001) versus RT. However, changes in lean body mass favored RT over AT. Moreover, changes in VO/ and 6-MWT following AT were significant among both healthy and unhealthy participants, or men and women, after medium-term (< 24 weeks) and long-term (≥ 24 weeks) interventions, and among participants aged ≤65 and >65. Our results propose that AT should be considered an efficient approach to improving cardiorespiratory fitness and overall body composition with aging, particularly in terms of VO2max and 6-MWT performance. However, for improvements in lean body mass, RT may be more beneficial. Therefore, a combination of AT and RT might be optimal for comprehensive fitness and body composition improvements with aging.

OBJECTIVE
The objective of this meta-analysis is to study the effect of different strengths of resistance training programs on the severity and frequency of hot flushes in postmenopausal women with vasomotor symptoms.
BACKGROUND
Menopause is defined as the state in which the menstrual cycle of a biological female spontaneously comes to a halt for a period of about 1 year. Through a detailed analysis of much of the research, it is found that the resistance training program is beneficial not only for reducing the severity as well as the frequency of hot flushes in postmenopausal women.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Online research was conducted through databases such as PubMed, Cochrane Trial Register, and Google Scholar till the 20th of March 2023. The Review Manager (version 5.4.1) was used to statistically analyze the data from the studies. Studies meeting the inclusion criteria, comparing the vasomotor symptoms in resistance training groups as compared to control were used for this meta-analysis. The primary outcome of interest was the alleviation of hot flushes in the resistance training group. Random-effect model was used to pool the studies and the result was reported in SMD with 95% Confidence Interval (CI).
RESULTS
5 studies were selected for this review. Statistical analysis shows that vasomotor symptoms were more common in the control group and decreased significantly in the resistance training group after the intervention (SMD = -1.31, 95% CI: -1.85 to -0.77, p = 0.002).
CONCLUSION
Resistance Training significantly affects vasomotor symptoms and can be considered for such symptoms in postmenopausal women.

INTRODUCTION
Spinal cord injuries (SCI) have physiological, emotional, and economic consequences in the lives of affected people. Resistance training (RT) is efficient in improving several physiological factors, quality of life, and body composition. Due to the scarce literature on the analysis of isolated RT, the objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the effects of RT without the association of other techniques, in aspects related to the quality of life and body composition of people with SCI.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION
The research was carried out in databases such as Pubmed, Cochrane, and Web of Science using the terms ("Spinal cord injury") AND (("Resistance Training") OR ("Strength training")). Given the lack of evidence on the subject, no deadline was set for the study to be eligible for analysis.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS
The search for the articles was carried out in November of 2023 and returned 470 results, of which 315 remained after the elimination of duplicates, with 281 being excluded after title analysis. A total of 34 abstracts were analyzed and 29 studies were excluded, leaving 5 complete articles for thorough analysis.
CONCLUSIONS
After analyzing the main results, we concluded that RT promotes significant improvements in body composition, pain, stress and depression symptoms, increased functionality, physical awareness, and quality of life.

OBJECTIVE
The present study aimed to determine the magnitude and intervention time of resistance training required to generate adaptations in the muscle thickness of the quadriceps muscle obtained by ultrasound in healthy adults.
METHOD
A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted on studies recovered from Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases up to March 2022. The study selection process was carried out by two independent researchers, with the presence of a third researcher in case of disagreements. The methodological quality of the studies was determined with the TESTEX scale, and the risk of bias analysis was determined using Cochrane's RoB 2.0 tool. The meta-analysis used the inverse of the variance with a fixed model, and the effect size was reported by the standardized mean difference (SMD) with a confidence interval of 95%.
RESULTS
Ten studies were included in a meta-analysis. The overall analysis of the studies demonstrated an SMD = 0.35 [95% CI: 0.13-0.56] (P = 0.002), with a low heterogeneity of I = 0% (P = 0.52). No publication bias was detected using a funnel plot followed by Egger's test (P = 0.06). The degree of certainty of the meta-analysis was high using the GRADE tool.
CONCLUSION
We found that resistance training can generate significant average increases of 16.6% in muscle thickness obtained by ultrasound in the quadriceps femoris muscles of healthy adults. However, the subgroup analysis showed that significant effect sizes were only observed after eight weeks of training.
