Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is widely used for non-invasive retinal vascular imaging, but the OCTA methods used to assess retinal perfusion vary. We evaluated the different methods used to assess retinal perfusion between OCTA studies. MEDLINE and Embase were searched from 2014 to August 2021. We included prospective studies including ≥ 50 participants using OCTA to assess retinal perfusion in either global retinal or systemic disorders. Risk of bias was assessed using the National Institute of Health quality assessment tool for observational cohort and cross-sectional studies. Heterogeneity of data was assessed by Q statistics, Chi-square test, and I index. Of the 5974 studies identified, 191 studies were included in this evaluation. The selected studies employed seven OCTA devices, six macula volume dimensions, four macula subregions, nine perfusion analyses, and five vessel layer definitions, totalling 197 distinct methods of assessing macula perfusion and over 7000 possible combinations. Meta-analysis was performed on 88 studies reporting vessel density and foveal avascular zone area, showing lower retinal perfusion in patients with diabetes mellitus than in healthy controls, but with high heterogeneity. Heterogeneity was lowest and reported vascular effects strongest in superficial capillary plexus assessments. Systematic review of OCTA studies revealed massive heterogeneity in the methods employed to assess retinal perfusion, supporting calls for standardisation of methodology.

Imaging from optical coherence tomography (OCT) is widely used for detecting retinal diseases, localization of intra-retinal boundaries, etc. It is, however, degraded by speckle noise. Deep learning models can aid with denoising, allowing clinicians to clearly diagnose retinal diseases. Deep learning models can be considered as an end-to-end framework. We selected denoising studies that used deep learning models with retinal OCT imagery. Each study was quality-assessed through image quality metrics (including the peak signal-to-noise ratio-, contrast-to-noise ratio-, and structural similarity index metric-). Meta-analysis could not be performed due to heterogeneity in the methods of the studies and measurements of their performance. Multiple databases (including Medline via PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Embase) and a repository (ArXiv) were screened for publications published after 2010, without any limitation on language. From the 95 potential studies identified, a total of 41 were evaluated thoroughly. Fifty-four of these studies were excluded after full text assessment depending on whether deep learning (DL) was utilized or the dataset and results were not effectively explained. Numerous types of OCT images are mentioned in this review consisting of public retinal image datasets utilized purposefully for denoising OCT images ( = 37) and the Optic Nerve Head (ONH) ( = 4). A wide range of image quality metrics was used; and that ranged between 8 and 156 dB. The minority of studies ( = 8) showed a low risk of bias in all domains. Studies utilizing ONH images produced either a or value varying from 8.1 to 25.7 dB, and that of public retinal datasets was 26.4 to 158.6 dB. Further analysis on denoising models was not possible due to discrepancies in reporting that did not allow useful pooling. An increasing number of studies have investigated denoising retinal OCT images using deep learning, with a range of architectures being implemented. The reported increase in image quality metrics seems promising, while study and reporting quality are currently low.

Serious adverse events following vaccination include medical complications that require hospitalisation. The live varicella vaccine that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States in 1995 has an excellent safety record. Since the vaccine is a live virus, adverse events are more common in immunocompromised children who are vaccinated inadvertently. This review includes only serious adverse events in children considered to be immunocompetent. The serious adverse event called varicella vaccine meningitis was first reported in a hospitalised immunocompetent child in 2008. When we carried out a literature search, we found 15 cases of immunocompetent children and adolescents with varicella vaccine meningitis; the median age was 11 years. Eight of the children had received two varicella vaccinations. Most of the children also had a concomitant herpes zoster rash, although three did not. The children lived in the United States, Greece, Germany, Switzerland, and Japan. During our literature search, we found five additional cases of serious neurological events in immunocompetent children; these included 4 cases of progressive herpes zoster and one case of acute retinitis. Pulses of enteral corticosteroids as well as a lack of herpes simplex virus antibody may be risk factors for reactivation in immunocompetent children. All 20 children with adverse events were treated with acyclovir and recovered; 19 were hospitalised and one child was managed as an outpatient. Even though the number of neurological adverse events remains exceedingly low following varicella vaccination, we recommend documentation of those caused by the vaccine virus.

OBJECTIVES
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic and degenerative disease of the retina that leads to irreversible blindness. There is no proven effective treatment for early AMD and advanced AMD. Mediterranean diet (MD) has been linked to reducing the risk or delaying the progression of AMD. Therefore, in this study, we aim to investigate the potential of MD as a modifiable risk factor for AMD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A systematic search was performed in three databases: PubMed, EBSCO host, and Proquest. We search for studies that determine the association of MD in AMD. Then, we pooled the data for meta-analysis.
RESULTS
Eight studies were included in our systematic review. Seven studies were included for meta-analysis. Subjects with medium-high (hazard ratio [HR] 0.82; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.75-0.90) adherence to the MD showed a reduced risk of developing AMD. Moreover, medium adherence AMD shows a significant and inverse relationship with the progression to advanced AMD (HR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.81-0.93). Although it is still inconsistent, the reduction appears stronger for geographic atrophy than for neovascular AMD.
CONCLUSION
Adhering to the MD, particularly at a medium to high level, appears to confer a protective effect against AMD. The sub-analysis demonstrates even that there is a protective effect associated with moderate adherence against advanced AMD. The presence of considerable heterogeneity within the results warrants cautious interpretation. Further research is needed to enhance our understanding.

BACKGROUND
In recent years, the progress made in the field of optical coherence tomography has helped to understand the changes in eye layers in patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Early diagnosis of nAMD, a leading cause of irreversible vision impairment, is helpful. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis on OCT measurement alterations before and after anti-VEGF therapy in patients with nAMD and controls.
METHOD
We systematically searched Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science to find articles that measured choroidal and retinal layer changes after anti-VEGF therapy in nAMD Patients. We chose either a fixed-effects or random-effects model based on the assessed heterogeneity level to perform a meta-analysis. In addition, we conducted meta-regression, subgroup analyses, publication bias, and quality assessment for included studies.
RESULTS
Thirteen studies were included in the meta-analysis, with 733 total participants. Foveal thickness and subfoveal choroidal thickness (CT) decreased significantly in the first 3 years after injections, except for subfoveal CT in the third year after injection. It also showed that CT at 1500 µm temporal and nasal to the fovea did not significantly change.
CONCLUSION
Our results showed anti-VEGF treatment for nAMD patients was associated with a significant reduction in foveal thickness and subfoveal CT in the first 2 years after treatment. Our analysis did not reveal any correlation between changes in foveal thickness and subfoveal CT with best-corrected visual acuity or other factors.

BACKGROUND
Bioadhesion is the ability of materials to adhere to biological surfaces. Bioadhesives are substances which induce or promote bioadhesion. The internal application of bioadhesives is gaining popularity in recent years and is being increasingly utilized in vitreoretinal surgeries. The aim of this review is to discuss the various bioadhesives and their applications in vitreoretinal surgeries.
METHODS
PubMed, Google Scholar, ePub and Cochrane library database were used for literature selection. Keywords such as vitreoretinal surgery, bioadhesives, intraocular bioadhesives, glue, fibrin glue, cyanoacrylate glue and transforming growth factor were used individually and in differing combinations to perform a comprehensive systematic literature search.
RESULTS
A total of 47 papers were retrieved and included in this review. Cyanoacrylate glue was the first bioadhesive to be utilized for vitreoretinal surgery in human eyes in 1976. The most common indications for the use of bioadhesives were in optic disc pit maculopathy, macular holes and rhegmatogenous retinal detachments.
CONCLUSION
The use of intraocular bioadhesives in vitreoretinal surgery represents a significant and evolving area of interest within ophthalmic research. While the pioneering use of cyanoacrylate glue, fibrin glue and transforming growth factor beta demonstrated the possible use of intraocular adhesives, fibrin glue is the most widely used intraocular bioadhesive in vitreoretinal surgery.

PURPOSE
The goal of the study was to search for novel bi-allelic CRB1 mutations, and then to analyze the CRB1 literature at the genotypic and phenotypic levels.
APPROACH
We screened various variables such as the CRB1 mutation types, domains, exons, and genotypes and their relation with specific ocular phenotypes. An emphasis was given to the bi-allelic missense and nonsense mutations because of their high prevalence compared to other mutation types. Finally, we quantified the effect of various non-modifiable factors over the best-corrected visual acuity oculus uterque (BCVA OU) using multivariate linear regression models and identified genetic interactions.
RESULTS
A novel bi-allelic missense in the exon 9 of CRB1; c.2936G > A; p.(Gly979Asp) was found to be associated with rod-cone dystrophy (RCD). CRB1 mutation type, exons, domains, and genotype distribution varied significantly according to fundus characteristics, such as peripheral pigmentation and condition, optic disc, vessels, macular condition, and pigmentation (P < 0.05). Of the 154 articles retrieved from PubMed, 96 studies with 439 bi-allelic CRB1 patients were included. Missense mutations were significantly associated with an absence of macular pigments, pale optic disc, and periphery pigmentation, resulting in a higher risk of RCD (P < 0.05). In contrast, homozygous nonsense mutations were associated with macular pigments, periphery pigments, and a high risk of LCA (P < 0.05) and increased BCVA OU levels. We found that age, mutation types, and inherited retinal diseases were critical determinants of BCVA OU as they significantly increased it by 33% 26%, and 38%, respectively (P < 0.05). Loss of function alleles additively increased the risk of LCA, with nonsense having a more profound effect than indels. Finally, our analysis showed that p.(Cys948Tyr) and p.(Lys801Ter) and p.(Lys801Ter); p.(Cys896Ter) might interact to modify BCVA OU levels.
CONCLUSION
This meta-analysis updated the literature and identified genotype-phenotype associations in bi-allelic CRB1 patients.

Retinoblastoma, the most common intraocular tumor in childhood, still faces challenges in diagnosis and treatment, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Identifying strategies to improve the time to diagnosis and access to treatment is crucial to enhance survival rates and preserve ocular health. We conducted a systematic review to identify interventions that have demonstrated potential in addressing these challenges. We performed a comprehensive search across databases until March 2023. Out of the studies reviewed, 21 met the inclusion criteria and were categorized into five main areas: surveillance strategies, genetic counseling, education, public assistance, and international partnership. Despite the obstacles faced, the initiatives identified in this review present acts toward improving the time to diagnosis and access to treatment for retinoblastoma. Based on the extracted data, we propose a comprehensive chain of initiatives. We firmly believe that implementing this chain of initiatives can lead to improved clinical outcomes for retinoblastoma patients.

To investigate changes in foveal avascular zone parameters in individuals with prediabetes compared to normoglycemic controls. PUBMED, Scopus and Cochrane Library were searched for published articles comparing the foveal avascular zone between prediabetic individuals and normoglycemic controls as assessed by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Standardised Mean Difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was computed for the comparison. A total of seven studies were included in our analysis, 6 provided data for the superficial capillary plexus from 345 eyes of individuals with prediabetes and 347 eyes of controls and 4 provided data on the deep capillary plexus from 285 eyes from individuals with prediabetes and 325 eyes of controls. Foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area in the superficial capillary plexus was enlarged in individuals with prediabetes compared to normoglycemic controls (SMD = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.03-0.44, p = 0.03, I = 27%, 6 studies). There was no statistically significant change in the deep capillary plexus FAZ area between the two groups (SMD = 1.14, 95% CI = -0.06-2.34, p = 0.06, I = 97%, 4 studies). FAZ area in the superficial capillary plexus was larger in individuals diagnosed with prediabetes compared to normoglycemic controls. This finding suggests that prediabetes could induce retinal microvascular changes before the onset of clinical diabetes. More original studies are needed to validate the results of the current meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION
The aim of this study was to better understand the efficacy of various drugs, such as glucocorticoids and anti-vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF), in the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME), and to evaluate various clinical treatment regimens consisting of different therapeutic measures.
METHODS
This study included randomized controlled trials up to February 2023 comparing the efficacy of corticosteroid-related therapy and anti-VEGF therapy. PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Embase were searched, and the quality of the studies was carefully assessed. Finally, 39 studies were included.
RESULTS
Results at 3-month followup showed that intravitreal injection of bevacizumab (IVB) + triamcinolone acetonide (TA) was the most beneficial in improving best-corrected visual acuity and reducing the thickness of macular edema in the center of the retina in patients with DME. Results at 6-month follow-up showed that intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX) was the most effective in improving patients' bestcorrected visual acuity and reducing the thickness of central macular edema.
DISCUSSION
Overall, IVB+TA was beneficial in improving best-corrected visual acuity and reducing central macular edema thickness over a 3-month follow-up period, while DEX implants had a better therapeutic effect than anti-VEGF agents at 6 months, especially the patients with severe macular edema and visual acuity impaired.
