BACKGROUND
Social media and online advertising are increasingly used by plastic surgeons (PSs) to educate patients and obtain referrals, but it remains unclear whether the general public can distinguish the difference in training and accreditation among medical professionals advertising online. Our study elucidates the public's expectations regarding the distinction between plastic surgery and facial plastic surgery.
METHODS
A survey was distributed via MTurk, an Amazon surveying service, to collect information about demographics and assumptions that would be made solely based on the terminology "facial PS" (FPS) and "PS." Participants were restricted to those residing in the United States.
RESULTS
A total of 253 responses were collected. Based on the term FPS, respondents on average moderately to strongly agreed that they would expect an FPS to have completed a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency program (mean = 1.81; scale from 1= strongly agree to 5= strongly disagree) and would feel moderately to strongly misled if they visited an FPS for a consultation and later learned that the provider did not complete a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency (mean = 3.62; scale from 1 = not misled at all to 5 = extremely misled).
CONCLUSIONS
Despite increasing advocacy by professional societies and the member societies of the American Board of Medical Specialties, this study demonstrated that the lay public is unaware of factually different training and certification pathways given similarity in nomenclature. This study was notably not designed to draw conclusions or imply superiority of one specialty, certifying board, or training model over the other.

Background The demand for genetic services has outpaced the availability of resources, challenging clinicians untrained in genetic integration into clinical decision-making. The UTHealth Adult Cardiovascular Genomics Certificate (CGC) program trains non-genetic healthcare professionals to recognize, assess, and refer patients with heritable cardiovascular diseases. This asynchronous online course includes 24 modules in three tiers of increasing complexity, using realistic clinical scenarios, interactive dialogues, quizzes, and tests to reinforce learning. We hypothesized that the CGC will increase genomic competencies in this underserved audience and encourage applying genomic concepts in clinical practice. Methods Required course evaluations include pre- and post- assessments, knowledge checks in each module, and surveys for module-specific feedback. After 6 months, longitudinal feedback surveys gathered data on the long-term impact of the course on clinical practice and conducted focused interviews with learners. Results The CGC was accredited in September 2022. Principal learners were nurses (24%), nurse practitioners (21%), physicians (16%), and physician assistants. Scores of 283 learners in paired pre- and post-assessments increased specific skills related to recognizing heritable diseases, understanding inheritance patterns, and interpreting genetic tests. Interviews highlighted the CGC's modular structure and linked resources as key strengths. Learners endorsed confidence to use genetic information in clinical practice, such as discussing genetic concepts and risks with patients and referring patients for genetic testing. Learners were highly likely to recommend the CGC to colleagues, citing its role in enhancing heritable disease awareness. Conclusions The CGC program effectively empowers non-genetic clinicians to master genomic competencies, fostering collaboration to prevent deaths from heritable cardiovascular diseases, and potentially transforming healthcare education and clinical practice.

With the proliferation of pass/fail grading practices in the pre-clerkship phase of undergraduate medical education, questions arise about the transparency and variability of grading and grade reporting practices, raising issues of equity in assessment, particularly regarding residency matching. The purpose of this survey was to determine the remediation and academic performance reporting practices of United States (U.S.) allopathic medical schools in the pre-clerkship phase of their curricula. After an extensive literature search and feedback from curriculum deans and learning experts, we developed a survey that we sent in the Spring of 2022 to pre-clerkship curriculum officials at all 154 accredited U.S. allopathic medical schools. It addressed curriculum content and structure; pre-clerkship remediation (e.g., course retakes) and reporting (e.g., permanency of transcript notation) practices; documentation and reporting of nonacademic competencies; and participant opinions and recommendations regarding reporting, transparency, and equity. We generated descriptive statistics and did manifest coding of open-ended responses. We had a response rate of 40% (62/155), with over 71% indicating mainly organ systems-based curricula. Depending on the situation, there were a wide range of remediation approaches for single- and multiple-course failures, including tutoring or learning support, re-exams, and referrals to a promotion board. Professionalism concerns were a top priority to report to residency directors, with significant variability in respondent opinions and practices in reporting remedial activities. Respondents were concerned about equity, both in terms of flexible grading practices and transparency of reporting practices. The variability in reporting practices across schools, while allowing holistic and individualized approaches to academic support, also creates potential inequities. More work is needed to understand how different reporting practices across institutions may disadvantage marginalized and minoritized student groups at different points in their preparation.

Although the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education states that neonatal-perinatal medicine fellows must demonstrate an understanding of the emotional impact of admission to the NICU on a family, few curricula are in place to teach this important competency. Family-centered care (FCC) in the NICU is an approach to health care that focuses on decreasing mental and emotional trauma for families while empowering them to reclaim their role as caregivers. FCC is deeply rooted in trauma-informed care and is crucial during transition periods throughout the NICU admission. In this article, we provide a review of FCC and trauma-informed care and how to use these approaches at different stages during an infant's hospitalization. We also discuss parent support networks and how to integrate FCC into an existing NICU practice.

PURPOSE
Radiology faculty across various specialties have been reported to receive an average of 20.7 invitations to submit manuscripts to bogus journals and 4.1 invitations to speak at unsuitable events over a two-week span. Radiology trainees also receive a fair number of unsolicited invitations from unknown senders to submit manuscripts and speak at meetings. Trainees can be more vulnerable to predatory invitations due to potential naivety. We aimed to determine the prevalence of these spam invitations received by radiology trainees.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
The designed survey for evaluating the experience of radiology trainees regarding phishing scams of predatory publications and conferences was sent to radiology residency and neuroradiology fellowship program leadership to redistribute amongst their trainees, and was advertised on social media platforms. The survey was first sent out on September 28, 2023, and was closed two weeks later October 12, 2023. Spearman's correlation, univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were performed.
RESULTS
Our study included 151 respondents who completed the survey. Of the survey respondents, 53 % reported receiving unsolicited emails from predatory publications (mean = 6.76 ± 7.29), and 32 % reported receiving emails from fraudulent conferences (mean = 5.61 ± 5.77). Significant positive correlation was observed between number of unsolicited email invitations with number of PubMed indexed publications, number as corresponding author, number in open access journals and number of abstract presentations.
CONCLUSIONS
Trainees in radiology receive many unsolicited invitations to publish papers as well as to present at meetings that are not accredited. This could lead to wasted time and financial resources for unsuspecting trainees.

Subsequently, the data around wellness in cardiothoracic surgery, as well as policies and interventions that have been put into place to address wellness concerns in cardiothoracic surgery is discussed. The authors focus on both trainees and attendings and provide both a list of actions to address deficits in wellness management in the field, as well as resources available to promote well-being among cardiothoracic surgeons.

BACKGROUND
Pudendal nerve entrapment (PNE) is an underdiagnosed condition affecting a spectrum of pelvic functions, primarily pain, as outlined by Nantes diagnostic criteria. Although numerous surgical decompression techniques are available for its management, consensus on efficacy and safety is lacking. This study conducts a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the efficacy and complication rates of the main surgical decompression techniques.
METHODS
A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed®, Embase®, Web of Science®, and ClinicalTrails.gov® on 19th of April 2023. Initial screening involved title and abstract evaluation, with subsequent retrieval and assessment of abstracts and full-text articles. Studies assessing pain outcomes before and after surgical release of the pudendal nerve were included. Studies without full-text, focusing on diagnostic methods or with outcomes relating solely to LUTS, digestive symptoms, or sexual dysfunction, were excluded. Risk of bias assessement was conducted using the National Institute of Health (NIH) Study Quality Assessment tool. Studies were categorized based on three surgical techniques: perineal, transgluteal, and laparoscopic transperitoneal. Random-effects meta-analysis with subgroup analysis were used. Meta-regression analyses were conducted to investigate the influence of covariates on the observed outcomes.
RESULTS
Nineteen studies, comprising 810 patients, were included. The overall significant pain relief rate across all techniques was estimated at 0.67 (95% CI 0.54 to 0.78) with considerable heterogeneity (I = 80.4%). Subgroup analysis revealed success rate for different techniques: laparoscopic (0.91, 95% CI 0.64 to 0.98), perineal (0.69, 95% CI 0.52 to 0.82), and transgluteal (0.50, 95% CI 0.37 to 0.63). The laparoscopic technique exhibited a complication rate of 16.0%. Meta-regression indicated that patient age and median follow-up significantly influenced outcomes.
CONCLUSION
While comparing surgical techniques is challenging, this meta-analysis highlights important outcome differences. The laparoscopic technique appears most promising for pain improvement. However, the study also emphasizes the need for further robust, long-term research due to significant heterogeneity across studies and prevelent risk of bias. PROSPERO database: CRD42023496564.

INTRODUCTION
In 2021, the structural determinants of health (SDOH) were added to the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education common program requirements for all accredited residency programs, including general surgery. In this study, we sought to explore the current scope of, and concepts used in, health disparities curricula for general surgery residents, specifically investigating how general surgery residents learn about health disparities and the SDOH.
METHODS
We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Education Research Complete (EBSCOhost), and Web of Science Core Collection using keywords related to health disparities and the SDOH. Inclusion criteria consisted of all studies published after 2005 that discussed health disparities curricula for Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education-accredited general surgery residency programs. Five thousand three hundred seventeen articles were screened using a two-phase process. Data extraction and analysis was performed using critical review methods.
RESULTS
Seventeen articles were identified. Within these articles, seven unique health disparities curricula were found. All seven of the identified curricula employed cultural frameworks as methods to mitigate health disparities. Three curricula, all published after 2011, included education on the SDOH. A wide variety of educational methods were utilized; in-person didactics was the most common.
CONCLUSIONS
In the current literature, culture continues to play a large role in health disparities training for general surgery residents. Though further efforts are needed to understand the methods used in programs that have not published scholarly work, it is imperative to ensure that residents are provided with the sociopolitical perspective needed to understand the SDOH and serve all patients, including those affected by health disparities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
Academic productivity is viewed as a critical objective factor for a neurosurgery residency applicant. There has been a consistent rise in academic productivity over the last decade, but a lack of consistent data on the utility of this in helping neurosurgery residency programs identify which applicants will enter academic neurosurgery. This cross-sectional study evaluates the predictiveness of academic productivity before and during residency on career choice, both independent and dependent of training environment.
METHODS
The 116 accredited neurosurgery residency programs were split into 4 quartile groups based on their 2022 Doximity rankings. Six neurosurgery residency programs were randomly selected from each quartile. Publicly available information including number and type (before or during residency) of publication and type of employment (academic vs nonacademic) was collected on neurosurgeons who matriculated into residency in the year 2000 or later. Multivariable logistic regression was used to explore the associations among neurosurgeon and program characteristics, and an academic career.
RESULTS
A total of 557 neurosurgeons were identified. Group 1 (n = 194) had the highest median publications during residency total (12) and first author (5), as well as the highest percentage of neurosurgeons who attended a top 20 medical school (38.7%), hold a higher educational degree (20.6%), and pursued an academic career (72.2%). Neither attending a top 20 medical school, holding a higher educational degree, nor publications were significant multivariable predictors of an academic career. Being in group 1 was the only significant predictor of entering an academic career across analyses.
CONCLUSION
Only residency group ranking, not academic productivity, predicted a future academic career. For residency programs evaluating applicants as future academic neurosurgeons, this suggests that program environment is more predictive than traditionally valued characteristics such as research productivity. Additional work is needed to elucidate characteristics or practices by which future academic neurosurgeons can be identified.

BACKGROUND
Adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients have significant morbidity and rise in cardiac admissions. Their outcome with high-dose influenza vaccination is unknown in comparison to those without ACHD.
OBJECTIVES
The purpose of this study was to compare all-cause mortality or cardiopulmonary hospitalizations in self-identified ACHD versus non-ACHD patients receiving high- or low-dose influenza vaccination within the INfluenza Vaccine to Effectively Stop cardioThoracic Events and Decompensated heart failure trial.
METHODS
We prospectively included ACHD patients in the INVESTED (INfluenza Vaccine to Effectively Stop cardioThoracic Events and Decompensated heart failure) trial. The primary endpoint was all-cause death or hospitalization for cardiovascular or pulmonary causes.
RESULTS
Of the 272 ACHD patients, 132 were randomly assigned to receive high-dose trivalent and 140 to standard-dose quadrivalent influenza vaccine. Compared to the non-ACHD cohort (n = 4,988), ACHD patients were more likely to be younger, women, smokers, have atrial fibrillation, and have a qualifying event of heart failure. The primary outcome was 49.8 events versus 42.8 events per 100 person-years (adjusted HR: 1.17; 95% CI: 0.95-1.45; = 0.144) in the ACHD group and non-ACHD group, respectively. The interaction between ACHD status and randomized treatment effect was not significant for the primary outcome ( = 0.858). Vaccine-related adverse events were similar in both groups.
CONCLUSIONS
Patients who self-identify as being ACHD had similar primary outcome of all-cause death or hospitalization for cardiovascular or pulmonary causes compared to non-ACHD cohort. High-dose influenza vaccination was similar to standard-dose influenza vaccination on the primary outcome in patients who self-identify as ACHD.
