The UV-B component of sunlight damages the DNA in skin cells, which can lead to skin cancer and premature aging. Therefore, it is necessary to use creams that also contain UV-active substances. Many sunscreens contain titanium dioxide due to its capacity to absorb UV-B wavelengths. In the present study, titan dioxide was introduced in alginate and chitosan-alginate hydrogel composites that are often involved as scaffold compositions in tissue engineering applications. Alginate and chitosan were chosen due to their important role in skin regeneration and skin protection. The composites were cross-linked with calcium ions and investigated using FT-IR, Raman, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The stability of the obtained samples under solar irradiation for skin protection and regeneration was analyzed. Then, the hydrogel composites were assayed in vitro by immersing them in simulated body fluid and exposing them to solar simulator radiation for 10 min. The samples were found to be stable under solar light, and a thin apatite layer covered the surface of the sample with the two biopolymers and titanium dioxide. The in vitro cell viability assay suggested that the anatase phase in alginate and chitosan-alginate hydrogel composites have a positive impact.

The current clinical application of glaucoma drainage devices is made of non-degradable materials. These non-degradable drainage devices often trigger inflammatory responses and scar proliferation, possibly leading to surgical failure. We developed a biodegradable material hydroxyapatite-coated magnesium (HA-Mg) as a glaucoma drainage device. Twelve New Zealand white rabbits were randomly assigned to three groups: HA-Mg drainage plate group (6 right eyes), trabeculectomy group (6 right eyes), and control group (12 left eyes). Results showed that all HA-Mg drainage plates were completely degraded ~4 months postoperatively. At the 5th month postoperatively, there was no statistical difference in the corneal endothelium density between the HA-Mg drainage plate group and the control group (p = 0.857). The intraocular pressure (IOP) level in the HA-Mg drainage plate implantation group was lower than in the other two groups. The trypan blue dye still drained from the anterior chamber to the subconjunctiva 5 months after HA-Mg drainage plate implantation. HE staining revealed the scleral linear aqueous humor drainage channel and anterior synechia were observed after drainage plate completely degraded, with no obvious infiltration with the inflammatory cells. This study showed the safety and efficacy of HA-Mg glaucoma drainage plate in controlling IOP after implantation into the anterior chamber of rabbit eyes.

A non-union fracture is one of the most common complications arising from an untreated fracture. Bone grafts are able to fasten bone healing which can prevent and cure non-union fractures. Therefore, alternative hydroxyapatite bone grafts from waste resources are needed to increase the availability of bone grafts in the healthcare system. A bone substitute, hydroxyapatite (HA), has the ability to prevent non-union fractures. Green mussel shell contains 95.69 percent HA, allowing for an annual production of 133.97-287.07 tons per ha of HA, and is a potent alternative material in the manufacture of HA. This research was conducted for four months using a true experimental research method with a post-test-only control group design. This study used 36 New Zealand rabbits ( ) which were divided into 9 groups: positive control, negative control, and intervention at weeks 2, 4 and 6 after the intervention. All groups were subjected to three general procedures: pre-surgery, surgery, and post-surgery. The findings demonstrated that green mussel shell HA has efficacy in accelerating bone healing, better than HA bovine, as compared to the 6-week negative control group and demonstrated a significant difference ( < 0.05). Green mussel hydroxyapatite is proven to be able to fasten and maximize the bone healing process as fast as bovine HA, and even has higher efficacy than bovine HA.

OBJECTIVES
This study aims to investigate the effect of coating time on the formation of hydroxyapatite (HA) coating layer on ZK60 substrate and understand the biodegradation behavior of the coated alloy for biodegradable implant applications.
METHODS
Biodegradable ZK60 alloy was coated by HA layer for different times of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 h by chemical conversion method. After coating, all the coated specimens were used for immersion test in Hanks' solution to understand the effect of coating time on the degradation behavior of the alloy. The degradation rate of the coated alloy was evaluated by Mg ion quantification and pH change during immersion test. The microstructure of the coating layer was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) before and after immersion to understand the degradation behavior of the coated alloy.
RESULTS
HA coating layers were formed successfully on surface of ZK60 specimens after 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 h with different microstructure. Optimal coating quality was observed at 1 or 2 h, characterized by well-formed and uniform HA layers. However, extending the coating duration to 4 h led to the formation of cracks within the HA layer, accompanied by Mg(OH). Specimens coated for 1 and 2 h exhibited the lowest degradation rates, while specimens coated for 0.5 and 4 h showed the highest degradation rates. Furthermore, analysis of degradation products revealed the predominance of calcium phosphates formed on the surface of specimens coated for 1 and 2 h. Conversely, specimens coated for 0.5 and 4 h exhibited Mg(OH) as the primary degradation product, suggesting a less effective corrosion barrier under these conditions.
CONCLUSION
The HA layer formed after 2 h demonstrated as the most effective coating layer for enhancing the corrosion resistance of the ZK60 alloy for biomedical applications.

UNLABELLED
The Allalin gabbro of the Zermatt-Saas meta-ophiolite consists of variably metamorphosed Mg- to Fe-Ti-gabbros, troctolites, and anorthosites, which are crosscut by basaltic dykes. Field relationships of the various rock types and petrographic studies together with bulk rock and mineral chemical composition data allow the reconstruction of the complete geological history of the Allalin gabbro. With increasing magmatic differentiation, the incompatible element content in clinopyroxene increases (e.g., REEs and Zr by a factor of 5), whereas the Mg# decreases (from 86.4 to 74.6) as do the compatible element contents (e.g., Cr and Ni by factors of 3.5 and 5, respectively). Exhumation to shallower depths led to subsolidus ductile deformation and cooling of the gabbro followed by the intrusion of fine-grained basaltic dykes, which display chilled margins. Bulk rock data of these dykes reveal strong similarities in fluid-immobile trace element patterns to tholeiitic pillow basalts of the Zermatt-Saas and nearby meta-ophiolites. The recalculated REE patterns of the melt in equilibrium with igneous clinopyroxene is very similar to the REE patterns of the mafic dykes, indicating a cogenetic origin of pillow basalts, dykes, and gabbros. Together with the previously determined Jurassic intrusion age of the gabbro, our observations demonstrate that the Allalin gabbro intruded as a tholeiitic magma in a slow spreading MOR environment of the Piemonte-Ligurian ocean of the Alpine Tethys. Subduction of the Allalin gabbro resulted in different eclogitization extents of the Mg-gabbros as a function of variable hydration degrees. Metagabbros with low extents of hydration record incomplete eclogitization; the magmatic mineralogy (olivine + clinopyroxene + plagioclase) is preserved together with disequilibrium textures in the form of reaction coronae surrounding mineral boundaries. Metagabbros with high extents of hydration are completely eclogitized and display pseudomorphic replacement textures of magmatic minerals by eclogite-facies mineral assemblages, which required significant major to trace element transport across mineral domains. The locally variable extents of hydration took place near the sea floor, as recorded by the presence of Cl-apatite (6.28 wt% Cl), and an increase in B concentrations of minerals pseudomorphically replacing olivine (e.g., chlorite with 0.20-0.31 µg/g B and omphacite with 0.22-0.25 µg/g B) compared to magmatic olivine (0.12-0.16 µg/g B). Moreover, the chemical zonation pattern of metamorphic garnet coronae is different in completely eclogitized gabbros and gabbros with relic igneous minerals, in agreement with a main hydration event prior to subduction. The Allalin gabbro therefore represents a classical example of an oceanic gabbro formed in a slow spreading setting in the mid Jurassic that experienced heterogeneous hydration near the sea floor. Paleogene subduction of the gabbro to 70-80 km depth produced variably equilibrated gabbroic eclogites. In eclogite-facies Mg-gabbros, the water-rich minerals chlorite, talc, and chloritoid pseudomorphing magmatic olivine remained stable to these depths, revealing the potential relevance of hydrated Mg-gabbros as a fluid source at subarc depths in subduction zones.

Both the composition and architecture of artificial bone govern bone regeneration. Herein, carbonate apatite (CAp), which has a similar mineral composition to bone, was prepared by immersing calcium carbonate (CaCO) in a phosphate solution with varying acidification levels (pH 6.0) to pH 8.9, to reveal the influence of pH on the composition and architecture of the resultant CAp granules. The composition, crystal morphology, and architecture of resultant CAp granules was well-characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry and so on. Consequently, the rate of compositional transformation from CaCO to CAp was much higher at pH 6.0 and pH 7.0 than pH 8.0 and pH 8.9. The pH of the phosphate solution did not affect the macroarchitecture of the resultant CAp granules. In contrast, the composition, crystal morphology, microarchitecture, and degradation behavior of the resultant CAp granules were affected by pH of the phosphate solution. In particular, the open-pore distributions and volumes of the CAp granules prepared at pH 6.0-8.9 were changed to reflect the microarchitecture of the samples. Therefore, this study revealed that the pH-controlled elution precipitation reaction is useful for controlling the composition, crystal morphology, microarchitecture, and degradation behavior of the resultant CAp, while preserving its macroarchitecture. Our findings provide fundamental insights into the design of artificial bones for bone regeneration.

Labuan, Miri, Kundasang and Raub regions of Malaysia have very different geological formations and settings that could result in different levels of natural radioactivity. Hence, this study determines the influence of different geological formations on radioactivity in these locations using field measurements, petrology and geochemistry. A total of 141 gamma dose rates and 227 beta flux measurements were collected using Polimaster survey meters (PM1405) in these four regions. The gamma dose rate values range from 0.37 to 0.05 µSv/h with a mean value of 0.11 µSv/h. Beta flux values range from 3.46 to 0.12 CPS with a mean value of 0.57 CPS. Mineralogy and elemental composition of the different rock types were analysed using thin-section petrography, XRD, ICP and pXRF methods. Felsic igneous rocks such as syenite and granite have higher natural radioactivity and contain more radionuclide-bearing minerals such as apatite, zircon, allanite, K-feldspar, titanite, muscovite and biotite. Metamorphic rocks have the second highest natural radioactivity and contain fewer radioactive minerals. The natural radioactivity of sedimentary rocks mostly depends on their clay content. The gamma dose rate maps show that igneous and metamorphic regions around Raub have higher radioactivity compared to the sedimentary-dominated regions around Miri and Labuan. Annual effective dose (AED) and excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) were calculated to evaluate the potential health risk for inhabitants of these regions. Labuan and Miri are considered to be safe zones with respect to natural radioactivity as the results show little to no risk for the public, compared with the Raub region, which is medium to high risk.

Preparatiοn οf pοrοus hydrοxyapatite-metakaοlin geοpοlymer granules fοr adsοrptiοn applicatiοns using pοlyethylene glycοl as pοrοgen agent and sοdium dοdecyl sulfate as aniοnic surfactant.
This study investigated the elaboration of novel porous absorbent granules by mixing powdered hydroxyapatite, metakaolin, sodium metasilicate, polyethylene glycol, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an anionic surfactant. The effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was then studied by introducing it as a powder to the powdered mixture or dissolved into the granulation fluid. Characterization of the granules indicated that the incorporation of SDS dissolved in the granulation fluid into the G-PEG granules improved their specific surface area (97.9 m/g) and porosity, resulting in a synergistic increase in the adsorption of crystal violet and methylene blue dyes compared to G-PEG granules and hydroxyapatite or metakaolin geopolymer alone. Moreover, the granules exhibited satisfactory compressive strength of 0.81 MPa, making them suitable for large-scale adsorption columns. Finally, the regeneratiοn prοcess οf the granules was modeled and optimized by using surface response methodology based on Box-Behnken design. The granules cοuld be regenerated fοr eight cycles under οptimum cοnditiοns οf acetic acid cοncentratiοn οf 0.72 mοl/L, a temperature οf 323 K, and a cοntact time οf 173.22 min, withοut a significant lοss in the adsοrptiοn capacity οr degradatiοn οf the granules. These results suggest that the pοrοus granules prepared in this study have pοtential tο be used in industrial wastewater treatment.

Vertebrates use the phosphate mineral apatite in their skeletons, which allowed them to develop tissues such as enamel, characterized by an outstanding combination of hardness and elasticity. It has been hypothesized that the evolution of the earliest vertebrate skeletal tissues, found in the teeth of the extinct group of conodonts, was driven by adaptation to dental function. We test this hypothesis quantitatively and demonstrate that the crystallographic order increased throughout the early evolution of conodont teeth in parallel with morphological adaptation to food processing. With the c-axes of apatite crystals oriented perpendicular to the functional feeding surfaces, the strongest resistance to uniaxial compressional stress is conferred along the long axes of denticles. Our results support increasing control over biomineralization in the first skeletonized vertebrates and allow us to test models of functional morphology and material properties across conodont dental diversity.

Calcium phosphate cements, primarily brushite cements, require the addition of setting retarders to ensure adequate processing time and processability. So far, citric acid has been the primary setting retarder used in this context. Due to the poor biocompatibility, it is crucial to explore alternative options for better processing. In recent years, the setting retarder phytic acid (IP6) has been increasingly investigated. This study investigates the biological behaviour of calcium phosphate cements with varying concentrations of IP6, in addition to their physical properties. Therefore cytocompatibility in vitro testing was performed using osteoblastic (MG-63) and osteoclastic (RAW 264.7 differentiated with RANKL) cells. We could demonstrate that the physical properties like the compressive strength of specimens formed with IP6 (brushite_IP6_5 = 11.2 MPa) were improved compared to the reference (brushite = 9.8 MPa). In osteoblast and osteoclast assays, IP6 exhibited significantly better cytocompatibility in terms of cell activity and cell number for brushite cements up to 11 times compared to the brushite reference. In contrast, the calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA) cements produced similar results for IP6 (CDHA_IP6_0.25 = 27.0 MPa) when compared to their reference (CDHA = 21.2 MPa). Interestingly, lower doses of IP6 were found to be more effective than higher doses with up to 3 times higher. Additionally, IP6 significantly increased degradation in both passive and active resorption. For these reasons, IP6 is emerging as a strong new competitor to established setting retarders such as citric acid. These cements have potential applications in bone augmentation, the stabilisation of non-load bearing fractures (craniofacial), or the cementation of metal implants.
