A rhodamine-derived receptor was synthesized and comprehensively characterized for structural confirmation. The receptor was able to distinguish the copper ions (Cu) from other competing cations. The yellow color of the receptor changed to pink upon adding Cu ions, however, other competing cations ions were impotent towards any color variation. The UV-visible titration studies revealed the binding stoichiometry of a 1:1 ratio with a detection limit of 9.663 × 10 M. Additionally, a novel idea of the work resides in the use of diatom for the practical application, where the receptor has been tethered on nanoporous diatomaceous earth microparticles (P2D) to remove Cu ions. The results confirmed that 50 mg receptor functionalized DE could adsorb 10 mL of 1 ppm Cu ions from water. Furthermore, a proof-of-concept device that is inexpensive, simple to operate, and continuously removes Cu ions from water has been developed. The efficiency of the device in Cu ion removal could be realized through the naked eye by observing the color change of P2D particles, which has excellent potential for application in remote locations where water contamination is a significant issue.

The Potential of Two Entomopathogenic Fungi and Enhanced Diatomaceous Earth Mixed with Abamectin: A Comprehensive Study on Mortality, Progeny Production, Application Method, and Surface Application against .
This study determined the efficacy of (Bals. -Criv.) Vuill., (Metchnikoff) Sorokin, and diatomaceous earth mixed with abamectin (DEA) alone and in their combinations for the integrated management of larvae and adults of (Herbst) from three field populations of Pakistan (Multan, Rawalpindi, and Rahim Yar Khan) and one laboratory population (Faisalabad). Treatments were applied on three surfaces, namely, viz. steel, concrete, and jute bags, implementing two application methods, dusting and spraying. The combined treatments were more effective in comparison with single treatments for both larvae and adults. Overall, the highest mortality rates were recorded in the Faisalabad population, followed by the Rehaim Yar Khan, Rawalpindi, and Multan populations. Progeny production was suspended 21 days after exposure to the combined treatment of DEA and both fungi in all populations except Rawalpindi. Larvae were found to be more susceptible than adults in all treatments and intervals. Dusting was more efficient than spraying for both larvae and adults and for all the populations studied. The present study provides a wholistic understanding of the impact of different factors on the success of the combined treatments using DEA and entomopathogenic fungi, supporting their use as surface treatments.

A Schiff base receptor with an active -NH group was designed and synthesized for the selective and sensitive colorimetric detection of inorganic fluoride (F) ions in an aqueous medium. The sensitivity of the receptor for F ions was enhanced by the influence of two electron-withdrawing -NO groups at ortho and para positions which result in a vivid color change. The receptor underwent a remarkable color change from light yellow to violet, enabling naked-eye detection of F ions without the need for spectroscopic equipment. To ensure the structural integrity of the synthesized receptors, prominent spectroscopic techniques such as H NMR, FTIR, and GCMS analysis were used for characterization. With a limit of detection (LoD) of 0.0996 ppm, a 1 : 2 stoichiometric binding ratio was observed for receptor and F ions. The binding mechanism confirmed the deprotonation of the -NH group followed by the formation of -HF, resulting in an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition, which correlates with UV-vis and H NMR titration results. In addition, the proposed binding mechanism of F ion interaction with the receptor was theoretically validated using DFT and TDDFT calculations. Furthermore, as a real-life implementation of the receptor, quantification of the F ions present in a commercially available mouthwash was demonstrated. To assess the sensitivity performance, a paper-based dip sensor and a solid substrate sensor by functionalizing the receptor on diatomaceous earth were demonstrated. Finally, sensors were built into smartphones that could recognize the red, green, and blue percentages (RGB%) where each parameter defines the intensity of the color, which could also be used as a supplement to the colorimetric investigations.

Immobilization of enzymes has been widely reported due to their reusability, thermal stability, better storage abilities, and so on. However, there are still problems that immobilized enzymes do not have free movements to react to substrates during enzyme reactions and their enzyme activity becomes weak. Moreover, when only the porosity of support materials is focused, some problems such as enzyme distortion can negatively affect the enzyme activity. Being a solution to these problems, a new function "floatability" of enzyme devices has been discussed. A "floatable" micron-sized enzyme device was fabricated to enhance the free movements of immobilized enzymes. Diatom frustules, natural nanoporous biosilica, were used to attach papain enzyme molecules. The floatability of the frustules, evaluated by macroscopic and microscopic methods, was significantly better than that of four other SiO materials, such as diatomaceous earth (DE), which have been widely used to fabricate micron-sized enzyme devices. The frustules were fully suspended at 30 °C for 1 h without stirring, although they settled at room temperature. When enzyme assays were performed at room temperature, 37, and 60 °C with or without external stirring, the proposed frustule device showed the highest enzyme activity under all conditions among papain devices similarly prepared using other SiO materials. It was confirmed by the free papain experiments that the frustule device was active enough for enzyme reactions. Our data indicated that the high floatability of the reusable frustule device, and its large surface area, is effective in maximizing enzyme activity due to the high probability to react to substrates.

Review
Colorectal cancer is among the most prevalent and lethal cancers globally. To address this emergency, countries have developed diffuse screening programs and innovative surgical techniques with a consequent decrease in mortality rates in non-metastatic patients. However, five years after diagnosis, metastatic CRC is still characterized by less than 20% survival. Most patients with metastatic CRC cannot be surgically treated. For them, the only option is treatment with conventional chemotherapies, which cause harmful side effects in normal tissues. In this context, nanomedicine can help traditional medicine overcome its limits. Diatomite nanoparticles (DNPs) are innovative nano-based drug delivery systems derived from the powder of diatom shells. Diatomite is a porous biosilica largely found in many areas of the world and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for pharmaceutical and animal feed formulations. Diatomite nanoparticles with a size between 300 and 400 nm were shown to be biocompatible nanocarriers capable of delivering chemotherapeutic agents against specific targets while reducing off-target effects. This review discusses the treatment of colorectal cancer with conventional methods, highlighting the drawbacks of standard medicine and exploring innovative options based on the use of diatomite-based drug delivery systems. Three targeted treatments are considered: anti-angiogenetic drugs, antimetastatic drugs, and immune checkpoint inhibitors.

Optofluidic sensors have accelerated the growth of smart sensor platforms with improved sensitivity, reliability, and innovation. In this article, we report the integration of a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) material consisting of silver nanoparticle-decorated diatomaceous earth (AgNPs-DE) with a flow-through microfluidic device, building up a hierarchical structured micro-total analysis system (μ-TAS) capable of achieving part-per-quadrillion (ppq)-level sensitivity. By the synergic integration of millimeter-scale microfluidic devices and porous laboratory filter paper with a micrometer-sized crosslinked cellulosic network that carries SERS-active AgNPs-DE, which possesses submicron to nanometer regimes of photonic crystals and plasmonic nanostructures, we achieved enhanced mass-transfer efficiency and unprecedented detection sensitivity. In our experiment, fentanyl as the testing analyte at different concentrations was measured using a portable Raman spectrometer. The limit of detection (LOD) was estimated to be 10 ppq from a small detection volume of 10 mL with an ultrafast time of sensing (TOS) of 3 min. To attain comparable signals, the traditional soaking method took more than 90 min to detect 10 part-per-trillion fentanyl from a 10 mL sample. Compared with existing SERS sensing results of fentanyl, the limit-defying μ-TAS reduced the LOD-TOS product by almost 4 orders of magnitude, which represents a new stage of ultrafast sensing of extremely low concentration analytes.

Environmental trace evidence offers useful circumstantial intelligence to link persons and scenes of forensic interest. An increasing empirical research base is dedicated towards understanding the transfer and persistence dynamics of environmental indicators including pollen, soils, and diatoms, within a diverse range of experimental frameworks. This paper presents two discrete studies exploring transfer and persistence of soils and sediments on footwear and diatomaceous earth adhered to clothing in forensically pertinent scenarios. Variables including sediment type, foot position, clothing type, and body positioning were also explored throughout. Both experiments incorporated a field-based methodology during the sampling effort. Photographs were collected of an initial transfer sample and of a retained assemblage following hours, days, and up to one-week of wear, facilitating macroscopic assessment of trace evidence dynamics. All images were processed using accessible, open-source software before spatial analysis of evidence distribution within and temporal assessment (% retention) upon each evidential surface. The results highlighted consistent loss of transferred sediment from footwear with significantly greater retention of loamy clay soil than dune sand which was absent beyond 24 h of wear. Loss was not influenced by wearer gait but was more rapid from those areas of the shoe sole in direct contact with the ground. Diatomaceous earth was retrieved from all three clothing types tested after one week - significant losses of material occurred before 48 h with a consistent assemblage identified beyond this. Denim was significantly more effective than acrylic and fleece for diatomaceous earth retention and significantly more material was lost from clothing worn on the lower body. These findings highlight the value of using visual environmental markers and a macroscopic analytical approach during the investigation of environmental trace dynamics. The methodology offers a novel, non-destructive assessment of soil and diatom transfer and persistence, complementing more extensive laboratory-based examinations to ensure the development of a well-rounded research base within the forensic sciences.

Phenanthrene (PHE) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon categorized as a high priority organic pollutant being toxic for the ecosystem and human health, and its sorption on natural organic or inorganic substances seems a well-promising method for its removal from water streams. The goals of the present work are (i) to assess the capacity of low-cost adsorbents fabricated by treating coffee wastes and diatomaceous earth to remove PHE from water; (ii) to elucidate the role of the pore structure on PHE sorption dynamics; and (iii) to assess the potential to regenerate adsorbents loaded with PHE, by using the novel technology of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP). Diatomaceous earth (DE) and DE pre-treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or phosphoric acid (HPO) were chosen as inorganic adsorbents. Coffee waste (CW) and activated carbons (AC) produced from its pyrolysis at 800 °C (CWAC), either untreated (CWAC-800) or pre-treated with NaOH (CWAC-NaOH-800) and HPO (CWAC-HPO-800), were chosen as organic adsorbents. The adsorbents were characterized with nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and mercury intrusion porosimetry. Based on the PHE sorption capacity and pore structure/surface characteristics, the CWAC-NaOH-800 was chosen as the most efficient adsorbent for further equilibrium and kinetic sorption studies. The multi-compartment model was used to describe the PHE sorption dynamics in CWAC-NaOH-800 by accounting for the pore/surface diffusion and instantaneous sorption. The CWAC-NaOH-800 exhibited remarkable values for (i) the specific surface area (S = 676.5 m/g) and meso- and micro-pore volume determined by nitrogen sorption (V = 0.415 cm/g); (ii) the macro- and meso-pore volume determined by mercury intrusion porosimetry (V = 3.134 cm/g); and (iii) the maximum PHE sorption capacity (q = 142 mg/g). The percentage of adsorbent recovery after its regeneration with CAP was found to be ~ 35%. From the simulation of sorption dynamics, it was found that at early times, the sorption kinetics is governed by the film diffusion towards the external surface of grains, but at late times, most of the adsorbed mass is transferred primarily to meso-/macro-pores via diffusion, and secondarily to micro-porosity via surface diffusion. Based on the adsorbent characteristics, effect of pH on sorption efficiency, and numerical analysis of sorption dynamics, it was concluded that probably the dominant adsorption mechanism is the π-π interactions between hydrophobic PHE aromatic rings and CWAC-NaOH-800 graphene layers. The high PHE removal efficiency of CWAC-NaOH-800, the successful interpretation of sorption dynamics with the multi-compartment model, and the potential to regenerate PHE-loaded adsorbents with the green and economic technology of CAP motivate a strategy for testing CWACs towards the adsorption of other PAHs, application of adsorbents to real wastewaters, and scaling-up to pilot units.

A novel nanofiltration membrane was developed by entrapping a layer of modified diatomaceous earth between two layers of electrospun polysulfone (E-PSf) nanofibers. The diatomaceous earth particles and the fabricated membrane were characterized using FTIR, SEM, EDS, zeta potential, and water contact angle techniques. The static adsorption and dynamic separation of pristine E-PSF and sandwich-like membranes for methylene blue (MB) with/without salt were investigated under different operating conditions. The Langmuir model suited the MB adsorption isotherm data with a linear regression correlation coefficient (R) >0.9955. As pH increased, both flux and MB rejection of the sandwich-like membrane improved by up to 183.8 LMH and 99.7%, respectively, when operated under gravity. The water flux of the sandwich-like membrane was sharply increased by increasing the pressure up to 19,518.2 LMH at 4.0 bar. However, this came at the expense of MB rejection (10.93%) and reduced its practical impact. At a high salt concentration, the sandwich-like membrane also indicated remarkable dye/salt separation with a higher permeation of salt (<0.2% NaCl rejection) and MB rejection (>99%). The performance of the regenerated diatomaceous material and membrane was maintained during five cycles of operation compared to that of the original ones.

The increasing usage of an important heavy metal chromium for industrial purposes, such as metallurgy, electroplating, leather tanning, and other fields, has contributed to an augmented level of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in watercourses negatively impacting the ecosystems and significantly making Cr(VI) pollution a serious environmental issue. In this regard, iron nanoparticles exhibited great reactivity in remediation of Cr(VI)-polluted waters and soils, but, the persistence and dispersion of the raw iron should be improved. Herein, this article utilized an environment-friendly celite as a modifying reagent and described the preparation of a novel composites namaly celite decorated iron nanoparticles (C-Fe) and evaluation of C-Fe for the sequestration performance of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The results indicated that initial Cr(VI) concentration, adsorbent dosage, and especially solution pH are all critical factors to control C-Fe performance in Cr(VI) sequestration. We demonstrated that C-Fe could achieve a high Cr(VI) sequestration efficiency with an optimized adsorbent dosage. Fitness of the pseudo-second-order kinetics model with data indicated that adsorption was the rate-controlling step and chemical interaction controlled Cr(VI) sequestration on C-Fe. The adsorption isotherm of Cr(VI) could be the best depicted by Langmuir model with a monolayer adsorption. The underlying sequestration path of Cr(VI) by C-Fe was then put forward, and the combined effect of adsorption and reduction implied the potentials of C-Fe in Cr(VI) removal.
