In this study, a polysaccharide fragment with antioxidant and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activities was extracted from Maca (Lepidium meyenii Walp.) and subjected to structural analyses. The fragment, characterized by the α-D-Glcp-(1 → terminal group of the main chain linked to the →4)-Glcp-(1 → end unit through an O-6 bond and the O-3 bond of 1-3-4Glcp, was modified by introducing dialdehyde structures on its glucose units. It was then crosslinked with N-carboxymethyl chitosan via the Schiff base reaction to create a multifunctional hydrogel with antibacterial and ROS scavenging properties. Polyvinyl alcohol was incorporated to form a double crosslinked gel network, and the addition of silver nanoparticles enhanced its antibacterial efficacy. This gel system can scavenge excess ROS, mitigate wound inflammation, eradicate harmful bacteria, and aid in the restoration of skin microecology. The multifunctional maca polysaccharide hydrogel shows significant potential as a medical dressing for the treatment of infected wounds.

Oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in various neurological disorders, encompassing both neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and mood disorders like depression. The balance between the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the cell's antioxidant defenses, when disrupted, can lead to neuronal damage and neurologic dysfunction. In this study, we focused on the pathogenic role of oxidative stress in various neurologic disease models in vitro and investigated the neuroprotective capabilities of some novel bicyclic γ-butyrolactone compounds, with particular emphasis on the compound designated as 'bd'. Our investigation leveraged the HT22 and SH-SY5Y cells to model oxidative stress induced by HO or corticosterone (CORT), common triggers of neuronal damage in neurodegenerative and mood disorders. We discovered that compound bd robustly reduced ROS production and suppressed neuronal apoptosis, suggesting its potential in treating a wider array of neurological conditions influenced by oxidative stress. In conclusion, our research underscores the importance of addressing oxidative stress in the context of diverse neurological disorders. The identification of compound bd as a neuroprotective agent with potential efficacy against ROS-induced apoptosis in neural cells opens new horizons for therapeutic development, offering hope for patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases, depression, and other stress-related neurological conditions.

Review
Dye wastewater consists of high solids concentrations, heavy metals, minor contaminants, dissolved chemical oxygen demand, and microorganisms. Nanoflowers are nanoparticles that resemble flowers when viewed at a microscopic level. Inorganic metal oxide nanoflowers have been discovered to be a potential source for overcoming this situation. Their flower-like features give them a higher surface area to volume ratio and porosity structure, which can absorb a significant amount of dye. The metal oxide nanoflower synthesized from different synthesis methods is used to compare which one is cost-effective and capable of generating a large scale of nanoflower. This review has demonstrated outstanding dye removal efficiency by applying inorganic nanoflowers to dye removal. Since both adsorption and photocatalytic reactions enhance the dye degradation process, complete dye degradation could be achieved. Meanwhile, the inorganic metal oxide nanoflowers' exemplary reusability characteristics with negligible performance drop further prove that this approach is highly sustainable and may help to save costs. This review has proven the momentum of obtaining high dye removal efficiency in wastewater treatment to conclude that the metal oxide nanoflower study is worth researching.

To address the issue of excessive residues of 4-chloro-3,5-dimethylphenol (PCMX) in the water environment. In a one-step solvothermal process, iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) material MIL-53(Fe) undergoes a synthetic modification strategy. 2-Nitroterephthalic acid as an organic ligand reacted with Fe in a solvothermal process lasting 18 h to yield the nitro-functionalized MIL-53(Fe)-NO(18h). The objective was to augment the abundance of Fe central unsaturated coordination sites (Fe CUCs) and expedite the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle, thereby enhancing the heterogeneous Fenton-like treatment capability of pollutants. MIL-53(Fe)-NO(18h) has excellent hydrogen peroxide (HO) catalytic activity and PCMX degradation across a broad pH spectrum (4.0∼8.0). Almost complete removal of PCMX was achieved within 30 min, while pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constants (k) increased 4.37 times over MIL-53(Fe). The confirmation of increased Fe CUCs abundance in MIL-53(Fe)-NO(18h) was achieved through Lewis acidity, oxygen vacancies (OVs) signals, and Fe-O coordination characterization results. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that Fe CUCs in MIL-53(Fe)-NO(18h) exhibits heightened affinity for HO adsorption, showcasing stronger charge transfer and enhanced HO dissociation ability. The Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle, a driving force of Fenton-like reactions, was notably improved in the nitro-modified materials. These enhancements significantly expedited the Fenton-like process, resulting in the generation of increased amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROSs), with hydroxyl radicals (OH·) being pivotal components in degradation. The MIL-53(Fe)-NO(18h)/HO system has demonstrated versatility in treating a variety of emerging contaminants, achieving removal efficiencies exceeding 99.7% for other antibiotics and endocrine disruptors within 60 min. Furthermore, MIL-53(Fe)-NO(18h) demonstrated outstanding reusability and adaptability in actual water environments. This study introduces a straightforward and environmentally friendly strategy for remediating environmental pollution using Fe-MOF-catalysed heterogeneous Fenton-like technology.

This study proposes a novel and eco-friendly approach for wastewater treatment using plasma jet technology under bubble condition. This method allows for the controlled production of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals () while minimizing unwanted interactions with nitrogen in the air. The presence of bubbles in liquid significantly boosts the diffusion of within the wastewater, leading to a two-fold increase in degradation rate compared to normal condition. The effectiveness of the treatment was confirmed through ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, which showed a significant decrease in rhodamine B and methyl orange absorbance peaks . Raman spectroscopy further revealed structural changes in both pollutants, indicating successful degradation. Additionally, plasma characteristics like power, electron temperature, and density were monitored to gain deeper insights into the underlying mechanism. Importantly, the process minimizes the formation of harmful secondary pollutants such as ozone and nitrogen oxides. These pollutants were found under concentration of 0.14 mg m which is below established safety thresholds, adhering to World Health Organization guidelines. This research demonstrates that plasma jet treatment in bubble condition not only enhances the degradation efficiency of pollutants in wastewater but also minimizes the formation of harmful byproducts. This represents a significant breakthrough in developing sustainable wastewater treatment technologies.

This study investigated the efficacy of the rotating algal biofilm (RAB) for treating soy sauce wastewater (SW) and its related treatment mechanisms. The RAB system demonstrated superior nutrient removal (chemical oxygen demand, ammonium nitrogen, total nitrogen, and phosphorus for 92 %, 94 %, 91 %, and 82 %, respectively) and biofilm productivity (14 g m d) at optimized 5-day harvest time and 2-day hydraulic retention time. This was mainly attributed to the synergistic interactions within the algae-fungi (Apiotrichum)-bacteria (Acinetobacter and Rhizobia) consortium, which effectively assimilated certain extracellular polymeric substances into biomass to enhance algal biofilm growth. Increased algal productivity notably improved protein and essential amino acid contents in the biomass, suggesting a potential for animal feed applications. This study not only demonstrates a sustainable approach for managing SW but also provides insight into the nutrient removal and biomass conversion, offering a viable strategy for large-scale applications in nutrient recovery and wastewater treatment.

Most monoclonal antibody formulations require the presence of a surfactant, such as polysorbate, to ensure protein stability. The presence of high concentrations of polysorbate have been shown to enhance photooxidation of certain protein drug products when exposed to visible light. The current literature, however, suggest that photooxidation of polysorbate only occurs when exposed to visible light in combination with UVA light. This is probable as peroxides present in polysorbate solutions can be cleaved homolytically in the UVA region. In the visible region, photooxidation is not expected to occur as cleavage of peroxides is not expected at these wavelengths. This report presents findings suggesting that the presence of one or more photosensitiser(s) in polysorbate must be a cause and is required to catalyse the aerobic oxidation of polysorbate solutions upon exposure to visible light. Our investigation aimed to clarify the mechanism(s) of polysorbate photooxidation and explore the kinetics and the identity of the generated radicals and their impact on monoclonal antibody (mAb) degradation. Our study reveals that when polysorbate solutions are exposed to visible light between 400---800 nm in the absence of proteins, discoloration, radical formation, and oxygen depletion occur. We discuss the initial formation of reactive species, most likely occurring directly after reaction of molecular oxygen, with the presence of a triplet state photosensitizer, which is generated by intersystem crossing of the excited singlet state, leading predominantly to the formation of reactive species such as singlet oxygen species. When comparing the photooxidation of PS20 and PS80 in varying quality grades, we propose that singlet oxygen possesses potential for reacting with unsaturated fatty acids in PS80HP, however, PS20HP itself exhibited no measurable oxidation under the tested conditions. The study's final part delves into the photooxidation behaviour of different PS grades, examining its influence on the integrity of a mAb in the formulation. Finally, we examined the effect of photooxidation on the integrity of monoclonal antibodies. Our findings show that the exposure to visible light in polysorbate-containing mAb solutions at high PS concentrations of 4 mg∙ml results in increased monoclonal antibody degradation, highlighting the need for cautious evaluation of the correct PS concentration to stabilise protein therapeutics.

High levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been associated with the progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. The activation of the NFE2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/antioxidant response element (ARE) signaling pathway may restore the neuron's redox balance and provide a therapeutic impact. Hydroxygenkwanin (HGK), a dominant flavone from Genkwa Flos, has received expanding attention due to its medicinal activities. Our investigation results demonstrated the ability of HGK to protect the PC12 cells from oxidative damage caused by an excessive hydrogen peroxide load. HGK also showed the ability to upregulate a panel of endogenous antioxidant proteins. Further investigations have demonstrated that the neuroprotection mechanism of HGK is dependent on the activation of the Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway. Activating the Nrf2/ARE pathway by HGK reveals a novel mechanism for understanding the pharmacological functions of HGK. These findings suggest that HGK could be considered for further development as an oxidative stress-related neurological pathologies potential therapeutic drug.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE
The traditional medicinal formulation, Qifu-yin (QFY), has been widely prescribed for Alzheimer's disease (AD) treatment in China, yet the comprehensive mechanisms through which QFY mitigates AD pathology remain to be fully delineated.
AIM OF THE STUDY
This study aimed to explore the therapeutic implications of QFY on the synaptic injury and oxidative stress in the hippocampus of APPswe/PS1dE9 (APP/PS1) mice, with a concerted effort to elucidate the molecular mechanisms related to synaptic preservation and memory improvement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The components of QFY were identified by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The neuroprotective effects of QFY was evaluated using six-month-old male APP/PS1 mice. Subsequent to a 15 days of QFY regimen, spatial memory was assessed utilizing the Morris water maze (MWM) test. Amyloid-beta (Aβ) aggregation was detected via immunostaining, while the quantification of Aβ and Aβ was achieved through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to investigate the synaptic structure and mitochondrial morphology. Golgi staining was applied to examine dendritic spine density. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) and 4-hydroxy-nonenal (4-HNE) assays were employed to assess oxidative stress. The expression profiles of Aβ metabolism-associated enzymes and the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway were determined by Western blot.
RESULTS
A total of 20 principal compounds in QFY were identified. QFY mitigated memory deficits of APP/PS1 mice, including reducing escape latency and search distance and increasing the time and distance spent in the target quadrant. In addition, QFY increased platform crossings of APP/PS1 mice in the probe trial of MWM tests. TEM analysis showed that QFY increased synapse number in the CA1 region of APP/PS1 mice. Further studies indicated that QFY elevated the expression levels of Post synaptic density protein 95 (PSD95) and synaptophysin, and mitigated the loss of dendritic spine density in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice. QFY has been shown to ameliorated the structural abnormalities of mitochondria, including mitochondrial dissolution and degradation, up-regulate ATP synthesis and membrane potential in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice. Moreover, QFY activated the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice, which might contribute to the neuroprotective effects of QFY.
CONCLUSION
QFY activates the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE signaling, and protects against synaptic and mitochondrial dysfunction in APP/PS1 mice, proposing a potential alternative therapeutic strategy for AD management.
