The potency of vaccines with low antigen content can be improved with the appropriate adjuvant. This could allow production of more doses and lower the production cost.2. This study evaluated the efficiency of vaccines prepared using oil extracted from natural sources including argan oil, almond oil, sesame seed oil, pumpkin oil, cactus oil and black seed oil as alternative adjuvants for improving the protection capacity of inactivated influenza virus vaccine as compared to commonly used mineral oils.3. Each vaccine formulation was evaluated for stability, safety and immunogenicity in chickens, as well as for reducing the viral shedding after challenge infection.4. The cactus, sesame and pumpkin seed oil-based vaccines were found to be potent and successfully induced the production of humoral immunity in vaccinated chickens.

BACKGROUND
Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is the only disease-modifying treatment for immunoglobulin (Ig) E-mediated allergy. Owing to the high prevalence and early onset of hay fever and pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS), a safer and simpler treatment method than conventional AIT is needed. To develop a local nasal immunotherapy using an ointment containing hypoallergenic pollen and assess its efficacy in mice and healthy humans.
METHODS
Hypoallergenicity was achieved by combining pollen and galactomannan through the Maillard reaction to create birch pollen-galactomannan conjugate (BP-GMC). The binding of galactomannan to Bet v 1 was confirmed using electrophoresis and Western blotting (WB). Binding of specific IgE antibodies to BP-GMC was verified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and basophil activation test (BAT). The localization of BP-GMC absorption was confirmed using a BALB/c mouse model. BP-GMC mixed with white petrolatum was intranasally administered to 10 healthy individuals (active drugs, 8; placebo, 2) for 14 days.
RESULTS
In electrophoresis and WB, no 17-kDa band was observed. In ELISA and BAT, BP-GMC did not react to specific IgE but was bound to IgA and IgG. In the mouse model, BP-GMC was detected in nasopharyngeal-associated lymphoid tissues. In the active drug group, the salivary-specific IgA level significantly increased on day 15 (p = 0.0299), while the serum-specific IgG level significantly increased on day 85 (p = 0.0006).
CONCLUSIONS
The BP-GMC ointment rapidly produced antagonistic antibodies against IgE; it is safe and easy to use and might serve as a therapeutic antigen for hay fever and PFAS.

Pearson was an energetic and exceptional physician-scholar-leader who founded, established, and broadened the Divisions of Rheumatology at University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) beginning in 1956. His studies to induce myositis by injecting muscle saturated with the heat-killed tubercle bacillus, an emulsifier, and mineral oil (Freund's adjuvant) enabled his report that polyarthritis occurred with Freund's adjuvant alone in certain strains of rat and mice. This model of adjuvant arthritis allowed the next generation of studies to assess therapies for autoimmune diseases.

BACKGROUND
Congenital ichthyoses sometimes present with severe skin symptoms that significantly affect the patient's quality of life (QOL). Symptomatic treatments are the mainstay therapies, and their efficacy is limited and inadequate.
OBJECTIVE
To assess the disease severity and QOL in patients with congenital ichthyoses, and to investigate the effectiveness of current treatments.
METHODS
We conducted a questionnaire-based Japan-wide epidemiological survey of patients with congenital ichthyosis who received medical care from 1 January 2016-31 December 2020. Effectiveness of past and current treatments was assessed. The outcomes were the physician's assessment, disease severity assessed using the clinical ichthyosis score (CIS), and the disease burden estimated using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), the Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI), and the Infants' Dermatitis Quality of Life Index.
RESULTS
One hundred patients with 14 ichthyosis subtypes from 47 institutes were included in the final analysis. The CDLQI score showed a positive correlation with CIS (rs = 0.59, p = 0.004), while the DLQI score showed no significant correlation (rs = 0.13, p = 0.33). All existing medications were effective for many patients. Etretinate improved QOL and reduced CIS, but side effects including bone growth retardation were reported. Decreased treatment willingness was observed in patients with very low and very high CIS.
CONCLUSION
QOL scores were found to correlate with CIS in children, but not in adults. Considering the adverse events, it is speculated that etretinate is not indicated for children with mild cases. Petrolatum was the most commonly used medication, even in patients who were reluctant to receive treatment.

OBJECTIVE
Patients who are intubated and sedated are at risk for developing exposure keratopathy, which can lead to permanent vision loss. This retrospective study assesses the incidence of exposure keratopathy (EK) in intensive care unit (ICU) patients before and after implementation of an EK Prevention Order Set.
METHODS
At one tertiary care hospital (Bronx, NY), an "Exposure Keratopathy Prevention Order Set" was implemented to ameliorate this risk which included the application of white petrolatum-mineral oil lubricating ointment every 6 hours in both eyes. This retrospective chart review study analyzed the incidence of EK diagnosis before and after implementation of this EK Prevention Order Set. Patients who were on mechanical ventilation at the time of ophthalmology consult request between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, were included. Ophthalmology consult notes of patients with EK diagnosis were reviewed for details regarding the consult request, examination findings, diagnosis, and treatment plan.
RESULTS
There were 247 and 361 ventilated ICU patients before and after the order set, respectively. The number of ophthalmology consults decreased slightly after the order set from 15 of 247 to 20 of 361 ventilated patients. In addition, the rate of EK among ventilated patients decreased from 4.5% (11 of 247 patients over 151 days) to 2.2% (8 of 361 patients over 212 days; P =0.154) with a risk ratio of 0.50 (95% CI 0.20-1.22).
CONCLUSION
The number of patients diagnosed with EK trended down after implementation of the EK Prevention Order Set.

BACKGROUND
Acne vulgaris is a common skin problem that may result in significant scarring and systemic comorbidities. Adverse effects and increasing resistance to available treatments urge the development of new therapeutics. Topical vitamin D analogues have been successfully used in psoriasis; however, the efficacy and safety of calcipotriol as a potential topical treatment of acne is yet to be established.
OBJECTIVES
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of calcipotriol in treating acne compared with adapalene and placebo.
METHODS
Sixty patients with acne were included and randomly divided into two groups of 30 patients each. Group I participants were treated by daily application of calcipotriol 0.005% cream on one facial side vs. placebo (petrolatum) over the other side. Group II were treated by daily application of adapalene 0.1% gel over one facial side vs. calcipotriol on the other. Therapeutic response was evaluated using the Japanese Acne Grading System (JAGS) and through photographic evaluation using Mean Improvement Score by Physician.
RESULTS
Adapalene-treated skin gave the greatest improvement and the highest patient satisfaction compared with skin treated with calcipotriol or placebo (P = 0.001). Nonetheless, the calcipotriol-treated side showed a significantly greater reduction in post-treatment JAGS score and much greater satisfaction than placebo. As treatment continued, improved tolerability to calcipotriol was noted, with comparable side-effects between the three study arms.
CONCLUSIONS
Calcipotriol seems to be a promising new safe topical therapeutic option for acne. However, adapalene is still superior in efficacy, tolerability and patient satisfaction.

The application of a multi-component reaction peptide as a model regenerative active to enhance skin wound-healing postlaser procedure in a double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial.
INTRODUCTION
Esthetic procedures are currently among the most effective options for consumers seeking to correct aging signs such as fine lines, wrinkles, and skin tone unevenness. Currently, there is a scientific need for an adjunct active to be paired with esthetic procedures to encourage wound recovery and address postprocedure pigmentation concerns.
OBJECTIVE
Toward that goal, this study assessed the efficacy of a peptide created from a multi-component reaction (multi-component peptide, MCP) as a model active for postprocedure care and evaluated its ability to promote skin healing in an ablative laser-induced wound model on the forearm.
METHODS
The mechanism of action of MCP was investigated using tubo assays, 2D melanocyte, and fibroblast cultures, reconstructed skin equivalents, and ex vivo skin explants. The MCP formula and the clinical benchmark formula of Aquaphor were assessed head-to-head by applying the products topically in an ablative laser-induced wound model (n = 20 subjects). The promotion of wound healing was evaluated by the investigator assessment of epithelial confluence, crusting or scabbing, general wound appearance, erythema, and edema.
RESULTS
MCP was determined to be beneficial to postprocedure skin recovery and healing by four main mechanisms of action: barrier repair as determined in an ex vivo tape-stripping model, reduction of inflammation and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, reduction of elastase activity, and stimulation of fibroblast through the mTOR pathway. The formula containing 10% MCP enhanced the kinetics of epithelial confluence and improvement of the crusting or scabbing appearance of the laser-generated wounds in a laser-induced mini-zone wound healing study on the forearm.
CONCLUSION
This study demonstrates the use of MCP as a proof of concept regenerative active that when incorporated into an optimized postprocedure skincare formula can improve skin healing and enhance the appearance of skin after injury with relevance to ablative aesthetic procedures.

Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) is the main transmitter of pathogens that cause human diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, zika and yellow fever. Faced with this problem, this study aims to select fungi with entomopathogenic potential against Ae. aegypti and develop formulations that optimize the control action of entomopathogenic fungi in the semi-field condition. 23 fungal strains native from Amazon were inoculated in Potato-Dextrose-Agar (PDA) culture medium for 14 days and then transferred by scraping to tubes containing 0.9% NaCl solution. To obtain the larvae, eggs were collected using traps in peridomestic environments for 7 days. 20 larvae of Ae. aegypti in 125 mL erlenmeyers containing 20 mL of conidial suspension at a concentration of 1x106 conidia/mL for initial selection and 1×104, 1×105, 1×106 and 1×107 conidia/mL for determination of LC50. Mortality was checked every 24 h for 5 days. The three fungi with the best virulence rates were identified using molecular techniques. The compatibility between fungi at a concentration of 1×106 conidia/mL and oily adjuvants, mineral oil and vegetable oil (andiroba, chestnut and copaiba) at concentrations of 0.1, 0.5 and 1% was evaluated. The germination capacity of 100 conidia per treatment was evaluated after incubation at 28 ºC for 24 h. To evaluate the entomopathogenic potential of the fungal formulations, conidial suspensions (1×106 conidia/mL) were added with 0.1% mineral and vegetable oil. The treatments were submitted to laboratory and semi-field conditions and mortality was verified every 24 h for 5 days. Beauveria sp. (4,458) (LC50 = 8.66× 103), Metarhizium anisopliae (4,420) (LC50 = 5.48×104) and M. anisopliae (4,910) (LC50 = 1.13×105) were significantly more effective in the larval control of Ae. aegypti, in relation to the other fungal morphospecies evaluated. Mineral oil was better compatible in all treatments evaluated. Beauveria sp. (4,458) was considerably less virulent under semi-field conditions. M. anisopliae (4,910) formulated with mineral oil increased larval mortality to 100% on the 4th day in the laboratory and on the 5th day in the semi-field. Fungal formulations developed from native Amazonian isolates represent a promising tool for the development of strategies to control Ae. aegypti.

Polychlorinated dibenzo--dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) can be formed during the production of chlorinated paraffins (CPs). Detection and accurate quantification of PCDD/Fs in CPs are challenging because of their matrix complexity. Therefore, the occurrence and formation mechanisms of PCDD/Fs from CPs have not been studied extensively in the past. In this study, 15 commercial samples including solid and liquid CPs were collected in 2022 from China. The average ΣSCCP concentrations detected in the solid and liquid CPs were 158 and 137 mg/g, respectively. The average International Toxic Equivalent (I-TEQ) values of 2,3,7,8-PCDD/F in solid and liquid CPs were 15.8 pg I-TEQ/g and 15.0 pg I-TEQ/g, respectively. The solid and liquid CPs had different predominant congener groups for SCCPs and PCDD/Fs. Possible formation routes for the generation of PCDD/Fs were analyzed by screening precursors in paraffin and laboratory-scale thermochemical experiments of CPs. The transformation between 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs and non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs was recognized by calculating the successive chlorination preference. The first reported occurrence of PCDD/Fs in CP commercial products indicated that exposure to CPs and downstream products might be an assignable source of PCDD/F emission, which is of great significance to further explore the control factors of PCDD/Fs in the whole life cycle of CPs.
