Mechanical recycling is one of the simplest and most economical strategies to address ever-increasing plastic pollution, but it cannot be applied to immiscible mixed plastics and suffers from property deterioration after each cycle. By combining the amphiphilic block copolymer strategy and reactive compatibilization strategy, we designed a series of stapler strategies for compatibilizing/upcycling mixed plastics. First, various functionalized graft copolymers were accessed via different synthetic routes. Subsequently, the addition of a very small amount of stapler molecules induced a synergistic effect with the graft copolymers that improved the compatibility and mechanical properties of mixed plastics. These strategies were highly effective for various binary/ternary plastic systems and can be directly applied to postconsumer waste plastics, which can increase the toughness of mixed postconsumer waste plastics by 162 times. Most importantly, it also effectively improved the impact resistance, adhesion performance, and three-dimensional (3D) printing performance of mixed plastics, and permitted the recycling of plastic blends 20 times with minimal degradation in their mechanical properties.

Light weight, thinness, transparency, flexibility, and insulation are the key indicators for flexible electronic device substrates. The common flexible substrates are usually polymer materials, but their recycling is an overwhelming challenge. Meanwhile, paper substrates are limited in practical applications because of their poor mechanical and thermal stability. However, natural biomaterials have excellent mechanical properties and versatility thanks to their organic-inorganic multiscale structures, which inspired us to design an organic-inorganic nanocomposite film. For this purpose, a bio-inspired multiscale film was developed using cellulose nanofibers with abundant hydrophilic functional groups to assist in dispersing hydroxyapatite nanowires. The thickness of the biosustainable film is only 40 μm, and it incorporates distinctive mechanical properties (strength: 52.8 MPa; toughness: 0.88 MJ m) and excellent optical properties (transmittance: 80.0%; haze: 71.2%). Consequently, this film is optimal as a substrate employed for flexible sensors, which can transmit capacitance and resistance signals through wireless Bluetooth, showing an ultrasensitive response to pressure and humidity (for example, responding to finger pressing with 5000% signal change and exhaled water vapor with 4000% signal change). Therefore, the comprehensive performance of the biomimetic multiscale organic-inorganic composite film confers a prominent prospect in flexible electronics devices, food packaging, and plastic substitution.

OBJECTIVES
One stage functional jaw reconstruction is defined as the resection and reconstruction of segmental defects in conjunction with the placement of dental implants in an ideal prosthetic position and loaded with a provisional restoration, during one surgical procedure. The aim of the study is to describe clinical outcomes of patients who underwent one stage functional jaw reconstruction.
METHODS
Patients who underwent one-stage functional jaw reconstruction, from January 2013 to March 2016 were recalled in 2022 and 2023. Planning and execution for the reconstruction utilized either analogue or digital techniques. Outcome parameters recorded were treatment-related outcomes at patient level, implant-related outcomes and patient-reported outcome measures.
RESULTS
Eighteen patients underwent one-stage jaw reconstruction with a total of 57 implants. Four patients had maxillary and 14 had mandibular reconstructions. Ten patients underwent postoperative radiotherapy. Ten patients were planned using analogue and eight by digital planning. Three patients had partial flap necrosis, three patients had plate fractures, implant loss was seen in one patient and four patients died during the period. A functional prosthesis was provided in 16 out of the 18 patients.
CONCLUSION
One-stage functional jaw reconstruction is a predictable method for providing rehabilitation with successful outcomes at 7-11 years. However, caution should be exercised when the treatment modality is carried out in patients with malignant pathologies who have undergone radiotherapy.

A correct diagnosis and treatment of fingertip- and nail injuries, commonly seen in the emergency room, is crucial. Insufficient treatment can result in long-term complications, including finger dysfunction and dysaesthesia, nail deformity, infection, or pain. These remaining problems may induce severe impairment of the quality of life of the patient. This review summarises the diagnosis and treatment.

Surgical treatment of pediatric maxillary and mandibular tumors can cause significant postresection disfigurement, mastication, and speech dysfunction. The need to restore form and function without compromising growth at the recipient and donor sites poses a particular reconstructive dilemma. This study evaluates outcomes of the custom endoprosthesis (CE) compared with noncustom reconstruction (NCR) and introduces an algorithm using CE to optimize available soft tissue reconstructive options. An Institutional Review Board-approved retrospective review of all patients undergoing maxillary or mandibular reconstruction between 2016 and 2022 was completed. The independent variable of interest was CE utilization. Primary outcomes of interest included hardware failure/removal or exposure, major complications, and revision surgeries. Covariates of interest included patient demographics, medical comorbidities, tumor size, and pathologic diagnosis. Statistical analyses including independent t test, χ2 analyses, and univariate/multivariate logistic regression were performed using RStudio version 4.2.1. Fifty-one patients (37 mandible and 14 maxilla) underwent CE or NCR. Of patients, 37% (n = 19) received CE. Of patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction, there were significantly lower rates of hardware exposure (14.3% versus 47.8%, P = 0.018), failure (7.1% versus 43.5%, P = 0.048), major complications (28.6% versus 78.2%, P = 0.008), and revisions (11.1% versus 50.0%, P = 0.002) in the CE cohort compared with the NCR cohort. The rates of hardware failure, exposure, major complications, and revisions did not significantly differ in maxillary reconstructions, however, CE successfully reconstructed significantly larger defects (179.5 versus 74.6 cm3, P = 0.020) than NCRs. Deviating from NCR, the authors propose an algorithm considering anatomical location, extent of resection, and patient age for soft tissue selection. This algorithm yielded improved mandibular reconstructive outcomes and no increase in complications rate in maxillary reconstruction despite larger resection defects. Furthermore, the authors' initial findings demonstrate that CE is a safe option for pediatric maxillary and mandibular reconstruction that may, in addition, facilitate improved form and function.

Facial feminization surgery (FFS) is a type of gender-affirming surgery aimed at bringing masculine facial features more in line with typically feminine characteristics. Specifically, mandibular contouring can create a softer jawline and help create a more round, feminine face. As the popularity of FFS continues to increase, improving surgical techniques and patient satisfaction is imperative. However, no quantitative measurement system currently exists to measure these changes. In this study, the authors describe the use of a novel segmentation technique using computerized tomography imaging to quantify the bony changes that occur during gonial angle reduction. Further, authors utilize this technique to describe changes in a cohort of 13 patients, and how these changes correlate with patient satisfaction. The authors found that gonial angle volume and surface area significantly decreased, as well as the intergonial:interzygomatic ratio, with a smaller ratio associated with more feminine features. In addition, patient satisfaction significantly increased post-operatively both specifically regarding jawline appearance (P = 0.0014) and regarding overall social and psychological function (P = 0.0021 and P = 0.0032, respectively), as captured by the FACE-Q and World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) surveys. Patients with greater changes in surface area reported greater improvements in WHOQOL psychological scores (P = 0.0086), and patients with greater changes in the intergonial:interzygomatic ratio reported greater improvements in WHOQOL social scores (P = 0.0299). Overall, our novel technique captures significant changes in gonial angle shape and can be applied to a wide range of future studies to improve the quality and accessibility of FFS.

The work presents the connection between the infection of COVID-19 during pregnancy and non-syndromic orofacial clefts (NSOFC). Aim of the study was to compare the incidence of COVID-19 disease during mother´s pregnancy between a group of the children with NSOFC and a control group of the children without NSOFC. COVID-19 was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. The study showed significantly higher incidence of COVID-19 disease in the group of mothers who gave birth to a child with NSOFC in comparison to the group of mothers who gave birth to a child without NSOFC. Our results indicate the possible participation of the infection of COVID-19 in the formation of NSOFCs.

Here we report about a patient with a full thickness burn injury of the left lower extremity with approximately 8% of total body surface area affected. Initial therapy consisted of necrosectomy and wound coverage with split thickness graft. The patient developed a wound infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, resulting in the failure of the skin graft to achieve complete healing. The case was further complicated by the patient's concurrent presentation of anemia, characterized by a hematocrit level of 19.8% on 11th day after admission. Additionally, the patient refused acceptance of any blood transfusion, adding a significant layer of complexity to the management strategy. In summary, the patient's critical state required an immediate intervention. Due to the contraindication for a further surgical debridement and autograft, we changed the treatment strategy to a conservative approach. First, the wound was debrided employing maggot therapy 17 days after admission. Subsequently, free soft tissue coverage was accomplished using decellularized fish skin dressings on 45th day. This approach yielded satisfactory wound closure. Following an approximately two-month hospitalization period (52nd day after admission), the patient was discharged with a stable wound condition, nearing complete healing.

OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the effect of different adhesives and veneering resins on the shear bond strength (SBS) of polyetheretherketone (PEEK).
METHODS
A total of 138 PEEK specimens were randomly divided into 6 groups according to adhesive material application: Control (C, no application), Adhese Universal (A) (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), Gluma Bond Universal (G) (Heraeus Kulzer, South Bend, IN, USA), G-PremioBOND (P) (GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan), Single Bond Universal (S) (3M, Saint Paul, MN, USA) and visio.link (V) (Bredent, Senden, Germany). Each adhesive group was divided into two subgroups according to the type of veneering material: Estenia direct composite (D) and Gradia Plus indirect composite (IN) (both GC Corporation). After the veneering process, the specimens were aged by thermal cycling. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for SBS analysis (P < 0.05).
RESULTS
The highest SBS results were obtained in the VIN group, followed by the VD, PD, GIN, AIN, AD, SIN, SD, PIN, GD, CIN and CD groups, respectively (P = 0.001). There were no significant differences in terms of the type of veneering composite when the same adhesive was applied (P > 0.05), except for Gluma Bond Universal (P = 0.009). All the adhesives tested showed clinically acceptable SBS results.
CONCLUSION
Visio.link offered the highest adhesion to PEEK, whereas the tested universal adhesives may be used as an alternative to visio.link in clinical settings. It was determined that changing the veneer type has no statistical difference when the same adhesive material is used.
