PURPOSE
This study investigated the impact of aeroallergens on the development and progression of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), with a focus on the specific associations between aeroallergens and CRS according to allergen type, number, and extent of sensitization.
METHODS
The medical records of 256 CRS patients were retrospectively analyzed. All were divided into nonallergic, house dust mite (HDM)-allergic, pollen-allergic, and double allergic groups via specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) testing. Clinical characteristics, computed tomography (CT) scores, olfactory functions, and demographic data were compared. Correlation analysis was performed to explore the relationships between the extent of allergen sensitization and CRS severity. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for hyposmia and anosmia.
RESULTS
The allergic group exhibited higher total CT scores than the nonallergic group ( = 0.001). Sensitivity to HDM or pollen allergens alone was not significantly associated with increased CRS severity. No significant differences were observed between the effects of HDM and pollen allergens on CRS severity. However, the double allergic group exhibited significantly higher CT scores ( < 0.001, < 0.001, and 0.003) than the other groups. Although the prevalence rates of anosmia and hyposmia were notably higher in the double allergic group, the difference was not statistically significant. The maximum specific IgE levels to HDM and pollen allergens positively correlated with the CT scores ( = 0.001 and 0.001, respectively).
CONCLUSIONS
Allergen sensitization, particularly to multiple common allergens, contributed to CRS severity. CRS patients sensitized to both HDM and pollen allergens tended to experience the diminished olfactory function. These findings underscore the importance of considering the allergen sensitization pattern when assessing CRS severity and its potential progression.

Neonicotinoid insecticide seed treatments are commonly used in rice (Oryza sativa) production to control rice water weevil (Lisorhoptrus oryzophilus). With the use of neonicotinoid seed treatments, there is potential that honey bees (Apis mellifera) could be exposed to neonicotinoids through translocation to the pollen. Studies were conducted in 2015 and 2016 to determine the level of neonicotinoids present in flag leaves, pollen, and grain of rice. Thiamethoxam was applied as a seed treatment and foliar prior to flooding. Clothianidin was applied as a seed treatment and as a foliar at a preflood and postflood timing. Subsamples of flag leaves, pollen, and grain were analyzed for positive neonicotinoid detections and abundance. Thiamethoxam was detected in 8.9% of samples and clothianidin was detected in 1.4% of samples. For both thiamethoxam and clothianidin, more positive samples were observed in flag leaf samples than in pollen or grain. An average of 4.30 ng/g of thiamethoxam was detected in flag leaves from seed-applied thiamethoxam. An average of 1.25 ng/g of clothianidin was found in flag leaves from a preflood application of clothianidin. A survey of honey bees present in rice fields was conducted in Mississippi and Arkansas to determine the abundance of honey bees present in rice fields based on the time of day. Honey bee densities were low in rice, with less than 5% and 3% positive detections observed in Mississippi and Arkansas, respectively. More positive detections and higher densities of honey bees were observed for mid-day sampling than for morning or evening sampling.

ARID-HMG DNA binding protein, AtHMGB15, regulates pollen development and pollen germination in Arabidopsis. Previous studies have shown that ARID-HMG DNA binding protein, AtHMGB15 regulate pollen development and pollen germination in Arabidopsis. Here, we performed transcriptome and cytological studies to understand the role of AtHMGB15 in regulating pollen wall morphology and the pollen tube germination rate. Our result showed abnormal vacuolization in the tapetal cells during anther maturation and prolonged PCD in AtHMGB15 loss-of-function mutant. The tapetum has the ability to perform both secretory and biosynthetic activities critical for pollen maturation and pollen viability. Interestingly, expression of PCD executer genes CEP1, MC9 and RNS3 were significant down-regulation of in athmgb15-4. The growth of pollen tubes is regulated by the actin cytoskeleton dynamics. To address the defect in pollen tube growth of athmgb15, we monitored the actin network in growing pollen tubes of wildtype and athmgb15-4 using Rhodamine-phalloidin fluorescence. Our results indicate a highly fragmented actin distribution in athmgb15-4 pollen tubes with a lesser number of long actin fibers and significantly low f-actin concentration at the apex. q-RTPCR further indicates significant downy-regulation of actin regulatory proteins VLN2 and PRF4. Collectively, our results suggest that AtHMGB15 being a nuclear architectural protein orchestrates high-order chromatin organization to promote the transcription of genes responsible for pollen development and pollen germination.

BACKGROUND
Birch pollen-related food allergy (BPFA) is the most common type of food allergy in birch-endemic areas such as Western and Central Europe. Currently, there is no treatment available for BPFA. Due to the cross-reactivity between birch pollen and a range of implicated plant foods, birch pollen allergen immunotherapy (AIT) may be effective in the treatment of BPFA. In this study, we systematically evaluate the effectiveness of birch pollen-specific subcutaneous or sublingual immunotherapy in treating BPFA.
METHODS
A search was performed in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane libraries. Studies were independently screened by two reviewers against predefined eligibility criteria. The outcomes of interest were changes in (1) severity of symptoms during food challenge, (2) eliciting dose (ED), and (3) food allergy quality of life (FA-QoL). The validity of the selected articles was assessed using the revised Cochrane risk of bias tool. We focused on studies with the lowest risk of bias and considered studies with a high risk of bias as supportive. Data were descriptively summarized.
RESULTS
Ten studies were selected that included 475 patients in total. Seven studies were categorized into "high risk of bias" and three into "moderate risk of bias." The three moderate risk of bias studies, with a total of 98 patients, reported on severity of symptoms during challenge and on the ED. All three studies had a control group. Compared to the control group, improvement in severity of symptoms was observed during challenge in two out of the three studies and on the eliciting dose in one out of three. Only one study investigated the effect of birch pollen AIT on FA-QoL, showing that there was no significant difference between patients receiving subcutaneous immunotherapy or a placebo. Of the seven supportive studies, four had a control group and of those, three showed improvement on both severity of symptoms and ED. None of the supportive studies investigated the effect of the therapy on FA-QoL.
CONCLUSION
This systematic review shows that there is not enough evidence to draw firm conclusions about the effect of AIT on BPFA. Future research is warranted that uses robust clinical studies that include long-term effects, QoL, and multiple BPFA-related foods.

Chloroplasts play a vital role in plant growth and development, which are the main sites of photosynthesis and the production of hormones and metabolites. Despite their significance, the regulatory mechanisms governing chloroplast development remain unclear. In our investigation, we identified a rice mutant with defective chloroplasts in rice ( L.), named albino lethal 13 (), which displayed a distinct albino phenotype in leaves, ultimately resulting in seedling lethality. Molecular cloning revealed that encodes a novel rice protein with no homologous gene or known conserved domain. This gene was located in the chloroplast and exhibited constitutive expression in various tissues, particularly in green tissues and regions of active cell growth. Our study's findings reveal that RNAi-mediated knockdown of led to a pronounced albino phenotype, reduced chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, a vesicle chloroplast structure, and a decrease in the expression of chloroplast-associated genes. Consequently, the pollen fertility and seed setting rate were lower compared with the wild type. In contrast, the overexpression of resulted in an increased photosynthetic rate, a higher total grain number per panicle, and enhanced levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in the roots and gibberellin A3 (GA3) in the shoot. These outcomes provide new insights on the role of in regulating chloroplast development in rice.

Land-use change and habitat fragmentation are threats to biodiversity. The decrease in available habitat, increase in isolation, and mating within populations can lead to elevated inbreeding, lower genetic diversity, and poor fitness. Here we investigate the genetics of two rare and threatened plant species, and , and we compare them to a widespread congener . We also report the first phylogenetic study of the genus (Apocynaceae), including 10 of the 17 taxa and multiple sampling locations, to understand species relationships. We used a double digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) approach to investigate the genetic diversity and gene flow of each species and to create a maximum likelihood phylogeny. The ddRADseq data was mapped to a reference genome to separate out the chloroplast and nuclear markers for population genetic analysis. Our results show that genetic diversity and inbreeding were low across all three species. The chloroplast and nuclear dataset in were highly structured, whereas they showed no structure for , while lacked structure for nuclear data but not chloroplast. Phylogenetic results revealed that is distinct and sister to , and together they are distantly related to . Our results demonstrated that evolutionary history and contemporary ecological processes largely influences genetic diversity within . Interestingly, we show that in there was significant structure despite being pollinated by large, bodied hawkmoths that are known to be able to carry pollen long distances, suggesting that other factors are contributing to the structure observed among populations. Conservation efforts should focus on protecting all of the populations, as they contain unique genetic diversity, and a protection plan for needs to be established due to its limited distribution.

Xenia, the phenomenon in which the pollen genotype directly affects the phenotypic characteristics of the maternal tissues (i.e., fruit ripening), has applications in crop production and breeding. However, the underlying molecular mechanism has yet to be elucidated. Here, we investigated whether mobile mRNAs from the pollen affect the ripening and quality-related characteristics of the fruit using cross-pollination between distinct Malus domestica (apple) cultivars. We demonstrated that hundreds of mobile mRNAs originating from the seeds are delivered to the fruit. We also found that the movement of one of these mRNAs, ACC oxidase 3 (MdACO3), is coordinated with fruit ripening. Salicylic acid treatment, which can cause plasmodesmal closure, blocks MdACO3 movement, indicating that MdACO3 transcripts may move through plasmodesmata. To assess the role of mobile MdACO3 transcripts in apple fruit, we created MdACO3-GFP-expressing apple seeds using MdACO3-GFP-overexpressing pollen for pollination and showed that MdACO3 transcripts in the transgenic seeds move to the flesh where they regulate fruit ripening. Furthermore, we demonstrated that MdACO3 can be transported from the seeds to fruit in the fleshy-fruited species tomato and strawberry. These results underscore the potential of mobile mRNAs from seeds to influence fruit characteristics, providing an explanation for the xenia phenomenon. Notably, our findings highlight the feasibility of leveraging diverse pollen genomic resources, without resorting to genome editing, to improve fruit quality.

CrRLK1L subfamily members are involved in diverse growth- and development-related processes in Arabidopsis. However, the functions of their counterparts in rice are unknown. Here, OsANX expression was detected in developing inflorescences, mature pollen grains, and growing pollen tubes, and it was localized to the plasma membrane in pollen grains and tobacco epidermal cells. Homozygous osanx progeny could not be segregated from the CRISPR/Cas9-edited mutants osanx-c1 and osanx-c2, and such progeny were segregated only occasionally from osanx-c3. Further, all three alleles showed osanx male but not female gamete transmission defects, in line with premature pollen tube rupture in osanx-c3. Additionally, osanx-c3 exhibited precocious flowering, excessively branched inflorescences, and an extremely low seed setting rate of 1.4 %, while osanx-c2 and osanx-c3 had no obvious defects in inflorescence development or the seed setting rate compared to wild-type Nipponbare (Nip). Consistent with this, the complemented line pPS1:OsANX-GFP/osanx-c2 (PSC), in which the lack of OsANX expression was inflorescence-specific, showed slightly earlier flowering and overly-branched panicles. Multiple inflorescence meristem transition-related and inflorescence architecture-related genes were expressed at higher levels in osanx-c3 than in Nip; thus, they may partially account for the aforementioned mutant phenotypes. Our findings broaden our understanding of the biological functions of OsANX in rice.
