INTRODUCTION
Despite declared life-course principles in non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention and management, worldwide focus has been on older rather than younger populations. However, the burden from childhood NCDs has mounted; particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). There is limited knowledge regarding the implementation of paediatric NCD policies and programmes in LMICs, despite their disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality. We aimed to understand the barriers to and facilitators of paediatric NCD policy and programme implementation in LMICs.
METHODS
We systematically searched medical databases, Web of Science and WHOLIS for studies on paediatric NCD policy and programme implementation in LMICs. Screening and quality assessment were performed independently by researchers, using consensus to resolve differences. Data extraction was conducted within the WHO health system building-blocks framework. Narrative thematic synthesis was conducted.
RESULTS
93 studies (1992-2020) were included, spanning 86 LMICs. Most were of moderate or high quality. 78% reported on paediatric NCDs outside the four major NCD categories contributing to the adult burden. Across the framework, more barriers than facilitators were identified. The most prevalently reported factors were related to health service delivery, with system fragmentation impeding the continuity of age-specific NCD care. A significant facilitator was intersectoral collaborations between health and education actors to deliver care in trusted community settings. Non-health factors were also important to paediatric NCD policies and programmes, such as community stakeholders, sociocultural support to caregivers and school disruptions.
CONCLUSIONS
Multiple barriers prevent the optimal implementation of paediatric NCD policies and programmes in LMIC health systems. The low sociopolitical visibility of paediatric NCDs limits their prioritisation, resulting in fragmented service delivery and constraining the integration of programmes across key sectors impacting children, including health, education and social services. Implementation research is needed to understand specific contextual solutions to improve access to paediatric NCD services in diverse LMIC settings.

BACKGROUND
While there is widespread consensus that sex- and gender-related factors are important for how interventions are designed, implemented, and evaluated, it is not currently known how alcohol treatment research accounts for sex characteristics and/or gender identities and modalities. This methodological systematic review documents and assesses how sex characteristics, gender identities, and gender modalities are operationalized in alcohol treatment intervention research involving youth.
METHODS AND FINDINGS
We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials, PsycINFO, CINAHL, LGBT Life, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and grey literature from 2008 to 2023. We included articles that reported genders and/or sexes of participants 30 years of age and under and screened participants using AUDIT, AUDIT-C, or a structured interview using DSM-IV criteria. We limited the inclusion to studies that enrolled participants in alcohol treatment interventions and used a quantitative study design. We provide a narrative overview of the findings. Of 8,019 studies screened for inclusion, 86 articles were included in the review. None of the studies defined, measured, and reported both sex and gender variables accurately. Only 2 studies reported including trans participants. Most of the studies used gender or sex measures as a covariate to control for the effects of sex or gender on the intervention but did not discuss the rationale for or implications of this procedure.
CONCLUSIONS
Our findings identify that the majority of alcohol treatment intervention research with youth conflate sex and gender factors, including terminologically, conceptually, and methodologically. Based on these findings, we recommend future research in this area define and account for a spectrum of gender modalities, identities, and/or sex characteristics throughout the research life cycle, including during study design, data collection, data analysis, and reporting. It is also imperative that sex and gender variables are used expansively to ensure that intersex and trans youth are meaningfully integrated.

BACKGROUND
Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in children. Wearable technology (insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring devices) that makes diabetes management relatively simple, in addition to education and follow-ups, enhances the quality of life and health of individuals with diabetes.
AIMS
To evaluate the impact of wearable technology on metabolic management and the quality of life in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
STUDY DESIGN
Systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS
The Preferred Reporting System for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses was used to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis. PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, EBSCO, Ulakbim and Google Scholar were searched in July 2022 and July 2023 using predetermined keywords. The methodological quality of the studies was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute's Critical Appraisal Checklists for randomized controlled experimental and cross-sectional studies. The meta-analysis method was used to pool the data.
RESULTS
Eleven studies published between 2011 and 2022 were included. The total sample size of the included studies was 1,853. The meta-analysis revealed that the decrease in hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) level in those using wearable technology was statistically significant [mean difference (MD): -0.33, Z = 2.54, = 0.01]. However, the technology had no effect on the quality of life [standardized mean difference (SMD): 0.44, Z = 1.72, = 0.09]. The subgroup analyses revealed that the decrease in the HbA1c level occurred in the cross-sectional studies (MD: -0.49, Z = 2.54, = 0.01) and the 12-19 (MD = 0.59, Z = 4.40, < 0.001) and 4-18 age groups (MD: -0.31, Z = 2.56, = 0.01). The subgroup analyses regarding the quality of life revealed that there was no difference according to the research design. However, the quality of life was higher in the wearable technology group than in the control group in the 8-12 and 4-18 age groups (SMD: 1.32, Z = 2.31, = 0.02 and SMD: 1.00, Z = 5.76, < 0.001, respectively).
CONCLUSION
Wearable technology effectively reduces the HbA1c levels in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes in some age groups. However, it does not affect the quality of life.

Systematic reviews are a cornerstone for synthesizing the available evidence on a given topic. They simultaneously allow for gaps in the literature to be identified and provide direction for future research. However, due to the ever-increasing volume and complexity of the available literature, traditional methods for conducting systematic reviews are less efficient and more time-consuming. Numerous artificial intelligence (AI) tools are being released with the potential to optimize efficiency in academic writing and assist with various stages of the systematic review process including developing and refining search strategies, screening titles and abstracts for inclusion or exclusion criteria, extracting essential data from studies and summarizing findings. Therefore, in this article we provide an overview of the currently available tools and how they can be incorporated into the systematic review process to improve efficiency and quality of research synthesis. We emphasize that authors must report all AI tools that have been used at each stage to ensure replicability as part of reporting in methods.

BACKGROUND
This systematic review addresses how adolescent-rated parent-child communication (PCC) quality is related to adolescent mental health.
METHODS
We performed a systematic literature search in Medline and APA PsycInfo, including peer-reviewed quantitative studies examining associations between adolescent-rated dyadic PCC quality and general as well as specific measures of adolescent mental health. Qualitative and case studies were excluded, as were studies reporting only parent-rated communication quality or instruments assessing other constructs than dyadic PCC. We screened 5314 articles, of which 37 were included in the review. We assessed study quality with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool.
RESULTS
We synthesized the findings in a table and narratively, reporting the main outcomes organized according to mental health constructs. The included studies were mainly cross-sectional. The results showed that adolescent-rated PCC quality is negatively associated with mental health constructs, demonstrating small to large effects across different mental health constructs and populations. The associations were found for general mental health and specific domains, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, suicidal ideation, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and addictive internet use/gaming.
CONCLUSIONS
The findings demonstrate that PCC is a relevant variable to consider in assessing adolescent mental health and preventive efforts. Limitations include the exclusive focus on adolescent-reported PCC questionnaires since parent- and observer-rated instruments may lead to different results. Also, PCC is related to other constructs, such as dyadic relationships, that were not included in this review. We conclude that PCC is a relevant variable to consider in mental health research. Our findings suggest that PCC may be considered in mental health practice, both in terms of assessing its quality and potentially by tailoring interventions to enhance PCC. These may represent a mean to promote adolescent mental health.

OBJECTIVE
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify the effect of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication on quality of life (QoL), and to understand whether this effect differs between stimulants and non-stimulants.
METHOD
From the dataset of a published network meta-analysis (Cortese et al., 2018), updated on 27 February 2023 (https://med-adhd.org/), we identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of ADHD medications for individuals aged 6 years or more with a diagnosis of ADHD based on the DSM (from third to fifth editions) or the International Classification of Diseases (ICD; ninth or tenth revision), reporting data on QoL (measured with a validated scale). The risk of bias for each RCTs was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool 2. Multi-level meta-analytic models were conducted with R 4.3.1.
RESULTS
We included 17 RCTs (5,388 participants in total; 56% randomized to active medication) in the meta-analyses. We found that amphetamines (Hedges g = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.08, 0.94), methylphenidate (0.38; 0.23, 0.54), and atomoxetine (0.30; 0.19, 0.40) were significantly more efficacious than placebo in improving QoL in people with ADHD, with moderate effect size. For atomoxetine, these effects were not moderated by the length of intervention, and did not differ between children/adolescents and adults.
CONCLUSION
In addition to being efficacious in reducing ADHD core symptom severity, both stimulant and non-stimulant medications are efficacious in improving QoL in people with ADHD, albeit with lower effect sizes. Future research should explore whether, and to what degree, combining pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions is likely to further improve QoL in people with ADHD.

This review aims to identify and report epidemiological associations between modifiable lifestyle risk factors for overweight or obesity in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). A systematic literature search of medical databases from 1990 to 2023 was undertaken. Inclusion criteria were observational studies reporting on associations between dietary factors, disordered eating, physical activity, sedentary and sleep behaviours and measures of adiposity in children and adolescents (<18 years) with T1D. Thirty-seven studies met inclusion criteria. Studies were mostly cross-sectional (89 %), and 13 studies included adolescents up to 19 years which were included in this analysis. In adolescents with T1D, higher adiposity was positively associated with disordered eating behaviours (DEB) and a higher than recommended total fat and lower carbohydrate intake. A small amount of evidence suggested a positive association with skipping meals, and negative associations with diet quality and sleep stage. There were no published associations between overweight and physical activity, sedentary behaviours and eating disorders. Overall, the findings infer relationships between DEB, fat and carbohydrate intake and adiposity outcomes in people with T1D. Prospective studies are needed to determine causal relationships and to investigate sleep stages. High quality studies objectively measuring physical activity and include body composition outcomes are needed.

INTRODUCTION
Peer education interventions are widely used in secondary schools with an aim to improve students' health literacy and/or health behaviours. Although peer education is a popular intervention technique with some evidence of effectiveness, we know relatively little about the key components that lead to health improvements among young people, or components that may be less helpful. This review aims to identify the main mechanisms involved in school-based peer education health interventions for 11-18-year-olds.
METHODS
Five electronic databases were searched for eligible studies during October 2020, an updated search was then conducted in January 2023 to incorporate any new studies published between November 2020 and January 2023. To be included in the review, studies must have evaluated a school-based peer education intervention designed to address aspects of the health of students aged 11-18 years old and contain data relevant to mechanisms of effect of these interventions. No restrictions were placed on publication date, or country but only manuscripts available in English language were included.
RESULTS
Forty papers were identified for inclusion with a total of 116 references to intervention mechanisms which were subsequently grouped thematically into 10 key mechanisms. The four most common mechanisms discussed were: 1) Peerness; similar, relatable and credible 2) A balance between autonomy and support, 3) School values and broader change in school culture; and 4) Informal, innovative and personalised delivery methods. Mechanisms were identified in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods intervention evaluations.
DISCUSSION
This study highlights a number of key mechanisms that can be used to inform development of future school-based peer education health interventions to maximise effectiveness. Future studies should aim to create theories of change or logic models, and then test the key mechanisms, rather than relying on untested theoretical assumptions. Future work should also examine whether particular mechanisms may lead to harm, and also whether certain mechanisms are more or less important to address different health issues, or whether a set of generic mechanisms always need to be activated for success.

OBJECTIVE
To analyze differences in the menstrual pattern, age at menarche, and body mass index (BMI) in adolescents with Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian (HPO) axis immaturity and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) through a systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS
The PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Virtual Health Library, Scopus databases were searched using combinations of descriptors. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. For data analysis, the results were grouped into PCOS group and NPCOS group (HPO axis immaturity). We performed a meta-analysis of raw data and the inverse variance method, employing the standardized mean difference, of the age at menarche and BMI of adolescents.
RESULTS
Participants totaled 1,718 from nine selected studies. The meta-analysis showed that the PCOS group had a higher BMI than the NPCOS group (SMD 0.334; CI95% 0.073 - 0.595; = .012). The degree of heterogeneity of the studies was approximately 40%. No significant difference in age at menarche (SMD - 0.027; CI95% -0.227 - 0.172; = 0.790) and menstrual patterns was found, but amenorrhea was described only in adolescents with PCOS.
CONCLUSIONS
The main characteristic in menstrual pattern that differentiated PCOS patients from girls with HPO axis immaturity was amenorrhea. Also, the BMI of PCOS patients was nearly one third higher than that of adolescents with HPO axis immaturity.
