To provide an in-depth analysis of noninvasive methods for the early diagnosis of oral premalignant lesions, focusing on novel biomarkers and optical technologies, and to discuss their potential in improving the prognosis of patients with oral oncological diseases. This state-of-the-art review examines various noninvasive diagnostic techniques, including the utilization of salivary microRNAs and optical technologies such as Raman spectroscopy, elastic scattering spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, narrow-band imaging, autofluorescence imaging, toluidine blue staining, and microendoscopy. Several noninvasive techniques have shown varying degrees of effectiveness in detecting oral cancer. Autofluorescence imaging exhibited sensitivities up to 100% but had variable specificity. toluidine blue staining reported sensitivity between 77% and 100% for high-risk lesions or cancer, with specificity around 45% to 67%. Spectroscopy techniques achieved 72% to 100% sensitivities and specificities of 75% to 98%. Microendoscopy presented a sensitivity of 84% to 95% and a specificity of 91% to 95%. The review highlights the strengths and limitations of each noninvasive diagnostic method and their recent advancements. Although promising results have been demonstrated, there is a need for further development of reliable strategies for early detection and intervention in oral oncology.

Corneal neuropathy involves corneal nerve damage that disrupts ocular surface integrity, negatively impacting quality-of-life from pain and impaired vision. Any ocular or systemic condition that damages the trigeminal nerve can lead to corneal neuropathy. However, the condition currently does not have standardized diagnostic criteria or treatment protocols. The primary aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of interventions for treating corneal neuropathy. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated corneal neuropathy treatments were eligible if the intervention(s) was compared to a placebo or active comparator. Comprehensive searches were conducted in Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase and clinical trial registries from inception to July 2022. The Cochrane Risk-of-Bias 2 tool was used to assess study methodological quality. Certainty of the body of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Overall, 20 RCTs were included. Evaluated interventions comprised regenerative therapies (n = 6 studies), dietary supplements (n = 4), anti-glycemic agents (n = 3), combination therapy (n = 3), supportive therapies (n = 2) and systemic pain pharmacotherapies (n = 2). Nine RCTs were judged at high risk of bias for most outcomes. Definitions for corneal neuropathy in the populations varied substantially across studies, consistent with lack of consensus on diagnostic criteria. A diverse range of outcomes were quantified, likely reflecting absence of an agreed core outcome set. There was insufficient evidence to draw definitive conclusions on the efficacy or safety of any intervention. There was low or very low certainty evidence for several neuroregenerative agents and dietary supplements for improving corneal nerve fiber length in corneal neuropathy due to dry eye disease and diabetes. Low or very low certainty evidence was found for neuroregenerative therapies and dietary supplements not altering corneal immune cell density. This review identifies a need to standardize the clinical definition of corneal neuropathy and define a minimum set of core outcome measures. Together, this will provide a foundation for improved phenotyping of clinical populations in studies, and improve the capacity to synthesize data to inform evidence-based care. BACKGROUND
Internal carotid artery stenosis (ICAS) is a prevalent vascular condition associated with ischemic cerebrovascular disease. The ophthalmic artery is the first branch of the internal carotid artery stenosis (ICA). Given the crucial role of the ICA in ocular perfusion, we aimed to assess the thickness and vessel density of the retina and choroid in individuals with ICAS.
METHODS
The PubMed and Embase databases were searched from inception to 10 January 2023 for studies evaluating retinal and choroidal changes between ICAS patients and healthy controls using optical coherence tomography (OCT) or optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Data of interest were extracted and analyzed using Stata software version 16.
RESULTS
Thirteen studies involving 419 ICAS eyes and 398 healthy eyes were included. The pooled results demonstrated that the average thickness of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) (WMD = -0.26, 95% CI: -0.45 to -0.08, = 0.005), ganglion cell complex (GCC) (WMD = -0.36, 95% CI: -0.65 to -0.06, = 0.017), and choroid (WMD = -1.06, 95% CI: -1.59 to -0.52, = 0.000), were significantly thinner in patients with ICAS than in healthy controls. The overall vessel density of the radial peripapillary capillaries (RPC) in whole-image scans was lower in ICAS patients than in healthy control subjects (WMD = -0.94, 95% CI: -1.49 to -0.39, = 0.001). No differences were detected in the vessel density of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) (WMD = -0.84, 95% CI: -1.15 to -0.53, = 0.092), the deep capillary plexus (DCP) (WMD = -0.27, 95% CI: -0.56 to 0.03, = 0.074), or the choriocapillaris (CC) (WMD = -0.39, 95% CI: -1.12 to 0.35, = 0.300).
CONCLUSION
This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated that ICAS can reduce the vessel density of the RPC and the thickness of the retina and choroid. The retinal and choroidal microvasculature is a potential biomarker of the initial signal of ICAS.

Role of Abelson Helper Integration Site 1, Nebulin, and Paired Box 3 Genes in the Development of Nonsyndromic Strabismus in a Series of Iranian Families: Sequence Analysis and Systematic Review of the Genetics of Nonsyndromic Strabismus.
PURPOSE
To look for causative genetic mutations in a series of Iranian families with strabismus. In addition, we systematically reviewed all the published articles regarding the role of genetic variations in primary and nonsyndromic comitant strabismus.
METHODS
Four families with a history of multiple cases of primary and nonsyndromic comitant strabismus were enrolled in this study. Polymerase chain reaction and Sanger sequencing of exons 23, 11, and 3 of the Abelson helper integration site 1 (), nebulin (), and paired box 3 () genes were performed, respectively. One offspring of a consanguineous marriage underwent whole-exome sequencing (WES) to look for possible causative variants. To conduct a systematic review, we thoroughly searched PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Knowledge extracting relevant publications, released by April 2021.
RESULTS
We examined four Iranian strabismus pedigrees with multiple affected offspring in different generations. Among these 17 participants, 10 family members had strabismus and 7 were healthy. Sanger sequencing did not reveal a causative mutation. Therefore, to further investigate, one affected offspring was chosen for WES. The WES study demonstrated two possible variants in and genes. These genetic variants showed high allele frequency in our population and are thought to be polymorphisms in our series of Iranian families.
CONCLUSIONS
We demonstrated that mutations in , , and genes were not common in a series of Iranian patients with familial strabismus. Moreover, by performing WES, we revealed that two variants of uncertain significance as possible causative variants for strabismus are not related to this disease in our population.

PURPOSE
To investigate changes in choroidal thickness in patients diagnosed with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) compared to healthy controls, using optical coherence tomography (OCT).
METHODS
PubMed and Scopus databases were systematically searched for published articles comparing choroidal thickness between patients with PEX and healthy controls. Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) with 95 % confidence interval (CI) was computed to compare continuous variables. Revman 5.4 was used for the analysis. Subgroup analyses were performed according to OCT devices used.
RESULTS
12 studies were included in our analysis. Subfoveal choroidal thickness was decreased in patients with PEX compared to healthy controls. Subgroup analysis confirmed this finding in studies that used Heidelberg or Optovue OCT Devices.
CONCLUSION
Our meta-analysis showed that choroidal thickness was decreased in patients with PEX compared to controls. Increased heterogeneity and small case-control studies are the main limitations of the meta-analysis. Further studies are needed to evaluate the clinical significance of reduced subfoveal choroidal thickness in PEX.

BACKGROUND
Normal tension glaucoma (NTG) is becoming a more and more serious problem, especially in Asia. But the pathological mechanisms are still not illustrated clearly. We carried out this research to uncover the gene polymorphisms with NTG.
METHODS
We searched in Web of Science, Embase, Pubmed and Cochrane databases for qualified case-control studies investigating the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and NTG risk. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each SNP were estimated by fixed- or random-effect models. Sensitivity analysis was also performed to strengthen the reliability of the results.
RESULTS
Fifty-six studies involving 33 candidate SNPs in 14 genetic loci were verified to be eligible for our meta-analysis. Significant associations were found between 16 SNPs (rs166850 of ; rs10451941 of ; rs735860 of ; rs678350 of ; c.603T>A/Met98Lys of ; c.412G>A/Thr34Thr of ; rs10759930 of ; rs1927914 of ; rs1927911 of ; c.*70C>G of ; rs1042522/-Arg72Pro of ; rs10483727 of ; rs33912345 of ; rs2033008 of ; rs3213787 of and c.231G>A of ) with increased or decreased risk of NTG.
CONCLUSIONS
In this study, we confirmed 16 genetic polymorphisms in 10 genes (, , , , , , , , and ) were associated with NTG.

BACKGROUND
Retinal microvascular anomalies have been identified in patients with cardiovascular conditions such as arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and carotid artery disease. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registration number CRD42024506589) to explore the potential of retinal vasculature as a biomarker for diagnosis and monitoring of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) through optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).
METHODS
We systematically examined original articles in the Pubmed, Embase, and Web of Science databases from their inception up to November 2023, comparing retinal microvascular features between patients with CAD and control groups. Studies were included if they reported sample mean with standard deviation or median with range and/or interquartile range (which were computed into mean and standard deviation). Review Manager 5.4 (The Cochrane Collaboration, 2020) software was used to calculate the pooled effect size with weighted mean difference and 95% confidence intervals (CI) by random-effects inverse variance method.
RESULTS
Eleven studies meeting the inclusion criteria were incorporated into the meta-analysis. The findings indicated a significant decrease in the retinal nerve fiber layer (WMD -3.11 [-6.06, -0.16]), subfoveal choroid (WMD -58.79 [-64.65, -52.93]), and overall retinal thickness (WMD -4.61 [-7.05, -2.17]) among patients with CAD compared to controls ( < 0.05). Furthermore, vascular macular density was notably lower in CAD patients, particularly in the superficial capillary plexus (foveal vessel density WMD -2.19 [-3.02, -1.135], < 0.0001). Additionally, the foveal avascular zone area was statistically larger in CAD patients compared to the control group (WMD 52.73 [8.79, 96.67], = 0.02). Heterogeneity was significant (I > 50%) for most features except for subfoveal choroid thickness, retina thickness, and superficial foveal vessel density.
CONCLUSION
The current meta-analysis suggests that retinal vascularization could function as a noninvasive biomarker, providing additional insights beyond standard routine examinations for assessing dysfunction in coronary arteries.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is widely used for non-invasive retinal vascular imaging, but the OCTA methods used to assess retinal perfusion vary. We evaluated the different methods used to assess retinal perfusion between OCTA studies. MEDLINE and Embase were searched from 2014 to August 2021. We included prospective studies including ≥ 50 participants using OCTA to assess retinal perfusion in either global retinal or systemic disorders. Risk of bias was assessed using the National Institute of Health quality assessment tool for observational cohort and cross-sectional studies. Heterogeneity of data was assessed by Q statistics, Chi-square test, and I index. Of the 5974 studies identified, 191 studies were included in this evaluation. The selected studies employed seven OCTA devices, six macula volume dimensions, four macula subregions, nine perfusion analyses, and five vessel layer definitions, totalling 197 distinct methods of assessing macula perfusion and over 7000 possible combinations. Meta-analysis was performed on 88 studies reporting vessel density and foveal avascular zone area, showing lower retinal perfusion in patients with diabetes mellitus than in healthy controls, but with high heterogeneity. Heterogeneity was lowest and reported vascular effects strongest in superficial capillary plexus assessments. Systematic review of OCTA studies revealed massive heterogeneity in the methods employed to assess retinal perfusion, supporting calls for standardisation of methodology.

Imaging from optical coherence tomography (OCT) is widely used for detecting retinal diseases, localization of intra-retinal boundaries, etc. It is, however, degraded by speckle noise. Deep learning models can aid with denoising, allowing clinicians to clearly diagnose retinal diseases. Deep learning models can be considered as an end-to-end framework. We selected denoising studies that used deep learning models with retinal OCT imagery. Each study was quality-assessed through image quality metrics (including the peak signal-to-noise ratio-, contrast-to-noise ratio-, and structural similarity index metric-). Meta-analysis could not be performed due to heterogeneity in the methods of the studies and measurements of their performance. Multiple databases (including Medline via PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Embase) and a repository (ArXiv) were screened for publications published after 2010, without any limitation on language. From the 95 potential studies identified, a total of 41 were evaluated thoroughly. Fifty-four of these studies were excluded after full text assessment depending on whether deep learning (DL) was utilized or the dataset and results were not effectively explained. Numerous types of OCT images are mentioned in this review consisting of public retinal image datasets utilized purposefully for denoising OCT images ( = 37) and the Optic Nerve Head (ONH) ( = 4). A wide range of image quality metrics was used; and that ranged between 8 and 156 dB. The minority of studies ( = 8) showed a low risk of bias in all domains. Studies utilizing ONH images produced either a or value varying from 8.1 to 25.7 dB, and that of public retinal datasets was 26.4 to 158.6 dB. Further analysis on denoising models was not possible due to discrepancies in reporting that did not allow useful pooling. An increasing number of studies have investigated denoising retinal OCT images using deep learning, with a range of architectures being implemented. The reported increase in image quality metrics seems promising, while study and reporting quality are currently low.

PURPOSE
Visual impairment and blindness caused by cataracts are major public health problems. Several factors are associated with an increased risk of age-related cataracts, such as age, smoking, alcohol consumption, and ultraviolet radiation. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the association between body mass index and age-related cataracts.
METHODS
Studies on weight and age-related cataracts published from January 2011 to July 2020 were reviewed by searching PubMed, Medline, and Web of Science databases. The random-effects and fixed-effects models were used for the meta-analysis, and the results were reported as odd ratios.
RESULTS
A total of nine studies were included in the meta-analysis. No correlation was found between underweight and nuclear cataracts (OR=1.31, 95% CI [-0.50 to 3.12], p=0.156). The results of the random-effects model showed that overweight was significantly associated with age-related cataracts and reduced the risk of age-related cataracts (OR=0.91, 95% CI [0.80-1.02], p<0.0001; I2=62.3%, p<0.0001). Significant correlations were found between overweight and cortical, nuclear, and posterior subcapsular cataracts (OR=0.95, 95% CI [0.66-1.24], p<0.0001; OR=0.92, 95% CI (0.76-1.08), p<0.0001; OR=0.87, 95% CI [0.38-1.02], p<0.0001). Significant correlations were found between obesity and cortical, nuclear, and posterior subcapsular cataracts (OR=1.00, 95% CI [0.82-1.17], p<0.0001; OR=1.07, 95% CI [0.92-1.22], p<0.0001; OR=1.14, 95% CI [0.91-1.37], p<0.0001).
CONCLUSION
This finding suggested a significant correlation between body mass index and age-related cataracts, with overweight and obesity reducing or increasing the risk of age-related cataracts, respectively.
