BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
The majority of all kidney stone cases are oxalate urolithiasis with a high risk of recurrence. Beside its widespread occurrence, kidney stones are characterized by severe complications and high treatment costs. Probiotics and herbal medications could be forthcoming therapeutic interventions in the management of oxalate kidney stones.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The PubMed/MEDLINE database was searched for keywords "" AND "Oxalate" OR "oxalate degradation" AND "" OR "" OR "recombinant " OR "", and "" AND "herbal extract". The search returned 253 results, 38 of which were included in the review.
RESULTS
Most of the oxalate-degrading probiotics belong to the and genus with a minimum dosage of 10 CFU in the form of capsules, sachets, and lyophilized powder. Oxalate concentration in media was 5-50mM with an incubation time ranging from 24h to 14 days. The majority of the studies suggested that probiotic supplementation might be useful for reducing urinary excretion of oxalate and urea and alleviation of stone formation. Different herbal extracts were used on murine models of nephrolithiasis (induced by 0.5-3% ethylene glycol) with reduction of renal inflammation and urinary parameters, and calcium oxalate crystals.
CONCLUSION
Several strains of probiotics and herbal extracts confer protective effects against kidney stone/nephrolithiasis, indicating their promising nature for being considered as elements of preventive / adjuvant therapeutic strategies.

OBJECTIVE
To assess the clinical evidence for silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to reduce dentine hypersensitivity in adults.
METHODS
Two independent researchers searched the English literature in five databases (Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library) up to 15th July 2023 for clinical trials investigating the desensitising effect of professionally applied SDF to manage dentine hypersensitivity in adults aged 18 or above at any follow-up period. The primary outcome was the change in dentine hypersensitivity between baseline and follow-up visits after SDF application regarding any validated pain outcome measures. The Cochrane guidelines were used for the risk of bias assessment.
RESULTS
Three hundred and thirty-one studies were identified, and four of them were finally included. Three of the included studies were rated as having a 'low risk' of bias. The SDF solution reduced dentine hypersensitivity in adults. The percentage reduction in dentine hypersensitivity ranged from 23 % to 56 % after a single application of SDF solution. Moreover, the SDF solution was more effective than potassium nitrate, potassium oxalate and glutaraldehyde plus hydroxyethyl methacrylate in reducing dentine hypersensitivity. Meta-analysis indicated a more significant reduction in visual analogue scales (1-10) by 1.35 (95 % CI:0.9-1.8; p<0.00001) after receiving the SDF application than controls.
CONCLUSION
The included clinical trials showed that SDF solution reduced dentine hypersensitivity in adults. However, clinical trials are few, and their protocol varied from one another. Further well-designed clinical trials should be conducted to provide more evidence on its use to manage dentine hypersensitivity.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
SDF is cleared as desensitizing agents by the US Food and Drug Administration to manage dentine hypersensitivity, which induces pain, limits food choice, and impacts the quality of life. Evidence from this systematic review informs clinicians and provides researchers insight for future research on SDF use for dentine hypersensitivity. Kidney stone formation is an intricate process that involves a disruption in the interplay of the multiple organs and systems involved in regulating the concentration of specific ions in the body. Women who have gone through menopause are susceptible to kidney stone disease. This systematic review aims to investigate the potential influence of estrogen on kidney function and oxalate homeostasis, notably through the anion transporter SLC26A6 (also known as putative anion transporter 1 or PAT1) in females. In accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 checklist, a systematic search of online databases included Pubmed, ScienceDirect Journals, and Ingenta Connect Journals. Predetermined criteria to include and exclude papers, gathering articles published between 2012 and 2022, were determined. After a thorough analysis, eight articles (three cohorts, one case-control, one in vivo, one in vitro, and two cross-sectional studies) were identified for the final quality assessment review. The eight selected and quality-assessed articles provided evidence of a directly proportional connection between estrogen and kidney function. A correlation between serum estrogen levels and the development of kidney stone disease was confirmed. Administration of β-estradiol was shown to effectively inhibit the function of the anion transporter PAT1 in a tissue-specific manner. In the case of the kidney, estrogen was observed to down-regulate PAT1, which led to a reduction in oxalate transporting activity and, consequently, a decrease in kidney stone formation. Consensus suggests that serum estrogen levels and optimal kidney functioning are interrelated. Furthermore, analysis of the quality-assessed articles and a comprehensive literature review revealed estrogen's tissue-specific regulation of the PAT1 anion transporter aids in maintaining kidney function and anion homeostasis. Additional research is needed to solidify estrogen's role in kidney stone disease to determine its therapeutic value in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVES
Vulvodynia is an emerging health problem, still insufficiently studied, that causes a significant reduction in quality of life in many women and individuals assigned female sex at birth. Little is known about the effects of diet and metabolic disorders on this condition. The objective of this study was to review currently available evidence on the diet and the nutritional and metabolic status of patients affected by vulvodynia.
METHODS
Published articles were systematically searched in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases.
RESULTS
The few available studies that reported data on patients' body mass index (BMI) described a BMI within the normal range in most patients affected by vulvodynia, showing no difference or a slightly lower BMI with respect to control individuals. Data on the relationship between metabolic diseases and vulvodynia are lacking. Regarding nutrition, the few available data do not support the prescription of a low-oxalate diet in women with vulvodynia. To date, studies on other dietary behaviors are also lacking.
CONCLUSIONS
This review emphasizes-for the first time, to our knowledge-the lack of data and the importance of conducting prospective studies investigating the nutritional and metabolic aspects related to the onset, maintenance, and therapy of vulvodynia.

INTRODUCTION
Lithiasis in renal graft recipients might be a dangerous condition with a potential risk of organ function impairment.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION
A systematic literature search was conducted through February 2023. The primary objective was to assess the incidence of lithiasis in kidney transplant (KT) recipients. The secondary objective was to assess the timing of stone formation, localization and composition of stones, possible treatment options, and the incidence of graft loss.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS
A total of 41 non-randomized studies comprising 699 patients met our inclusion criteria. The age at lithiasis diagnosis ranged between 29-53 years. Incidence of urolithiasis ranged from 0.1-6.3%, usually diagnosed after 12 months from KT. Most of the stones were diagnosed in the calyces or in the pelvis. Calcium oxalate composition was the most frequent. Different treatment strategies were considered, namely active surveillance, ureteroscopy, percutaneous/combined approach, or open surgery. 15.73% of patients were submitted to extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), while 26.75% underwent endoscopic lithotripsy or stone extraction. 18.03% of patients underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy whilst 3.14% to a combined approach. Surgical lithotomy was performed in 5.01% of the cases. Global stone-free rate was around 80%.
CONCLUSIONS
Lithiasis in kidney transplant is a rare condition usually diagnosed after one year after surgery and mostly located in the calyces and renal pelvis, more frequently of calcium oxalate composition. Each of the active treatments is associated with good results in terms of stone-free rate, thus the surgical technique should be chosen according to the patient's characteristics and surgeon preferences.

Calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals are biominerals present in a wide variety of plants. Formation of these crystals is a biomineralization process occurring in vacuoles within specialized cells called crystal idioblasts. This process is dependent on two key components: deprotonated oxalic acid, and calcium ions (Ca), and can result in multiple crystal morphologies. Raphides are needle-like CaOx crystals found in various plant organs and tissues. Though their function is highly debated, they can potentially store calcium, sequester heavy metals, protect against herbivory and possibly programmed cell death. The last review of the taxonomic and anatomical distribution of raphides across the plant kingdom dates back to 1980, in a review by Franceschi and Horner, prompting an updated systematic review of raphides in plants. We conduct a broad literature search to record plant taxa and tissue locations containing raphides. We provide an overview of raphide-forming plant taxa, discussing phylogenetic distribution of raphides at the order level, and report on the specific locations of raphides within plants. Our review reveals raphide occurrence has been studied in 33 orders, 76 families and 1305 species, with raphides presence confirmed in 24 orders, 46 families and 797 species. These taxa represented less than 1 % of known species per family. Leaves are the most prominent raphide-containing primary location in all three major angiosperm clades investigated: Eudicots, Magnoliids, and Monocots. Roots are least reported to contain raphides. The collation of such information lays the groundwork to unveil the genetic origin and evolution of raphides in plants, and highlights targets for future studies of the presence and role of plant raphides.

Kidney stone disease (KSD) is one of the earliest medical diseases known, but the mechanism of its formation and metabolic changes remain unclear. The formation of kidney stones is a extensive and complicated process, which is regulated by metabolic changes in various substances. In this manuscript, we summarized the progress of research on metabolic changes in kidney stone disease and discuss the valuable role of some new potential targets. We reviewed the influence of metabolism of some common substances on stone formation, such as the regulation of oxalate, the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), macrophage polarization, the levels of hormones, and the alternation of other substances. New insights into changes in substance metabolism changes in kidney stone disease, as well as emerging research techniques, will provide new directions in the treatment of stones. Reviewing the great progress that has been made in this field will help to improve the understanding by urologists, nephrologists, and health care providers of the metabolic changes in kidney stone disease, and contribute to explore new metabolic targets for clinical therapy.

BACKGROUND
Mounting evidence indicates that the gut microbiome (GMB) plays an essential role in kidney stone (KS) formation. In this study, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the composition of gut microbiota in kidney stone patients and healthy individuals, and further understand the role of gut microbiota in nephrolithiasis.
RESULTS
Six databases were searched to find taxonomy-based comparison studies on the GMB until September 2022. Meta-analyses were performed using RevMan 5.3 to estimate the overall relative abundance of gut microbiota in KS patients and healthy subjects. Eight studies were included with 356 nephrolithiasis patients and 347 healthy subjects. The meta-analysis suggested that KS patients had a higher abundance of Bacteroides (35.11% vs 21.25%, Z = 3.56, P = 0.0004) and Escherichia_Shigella (4.39% vs 1.78%, Z = 3.23, P = 0.001), and a lower abundance of Prevotella_9 (8.41% vs 10.65%, Z = 4.49, P < 0.00001). Qualitative analysis revealed that beta-diversity was different between the two groups (P < 0.05); Ten taxa (Bacteroides, Phascolarctobacterium, Faecalibacterium, Flavobacterium, Akkermansia, Lactobacillus, Escherichia coli, Rhodobacter and Gordonia) helped the detection of kidney stones (P < 0.05); Genes or protein families of the GMB involved in oxalate degradation, glycan synthesis, and energy metabolism were altered in patients (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
There is a characteristic gut microbiota dysbiosis in kidney stone patients. Individualized therapies like microbial supplementation, probiotic or synbiotic preparations and adjusted diet patterns based on individual gut microbial characteristics of patients may be more effective in preventing stone formation and recurrence.

BACKGROUND
Several studies have explored the impact of BMI on size and composition of urinary stones. Because there were controversies, a meta-analysis was necessary to be carried out to provide some evidence of the relationship of BMI and urolithiasis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science databases, and the Cochrane Library were searched up to August 12th 2022 for eligible studies. The urolithiasis patients were summarized into two groups: BMI < 25 and ≥ 25 kg/m2. Summary weighted mean difference (WMD), relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated through random effects models in RevMan 5.4 software.
RESULTS
A total of fifteen studies involving 13,233 patients were enrolled in this meta-analysis. There was no significant correlation of BMI and size of urinary stone (WMD -0.13mm, 95% CI [-0.98, 0.73], p = 0.77). Overweight and obesity increased the risk of uric acid stones in both genders and in different regions (RR=0.87, [95% CI] = 0.83, 0.91, p<0.00001). There was a higher risk of calcium oxalate stones formation in overweight and obesity group in total patients (RR=0.95, [95% CI] = 0.91, 0.98, p = 0.006). The relationship of BMI and calcium phosphate was not observed in this meta-analysis (RR=1.12, [95% CI] = 0.98, 1.26, p = 0.09). Sensitivity analysis was performed and indicated similar results.
CONCLUSIONS
The current evidence suggests a positive association between BMI and uric acid and calcium oxalate stones. It would be of great guiding significance to consider losing weight when treating and preventing urinary stones.

The Urticaceae family contains 54 genera and more than 2000 species that can be found in tropical, subtropical, and temperate climates all over the world. This family includes the largest genus in the world, , which is also known as stinging nettle. Stinging hairs are present on the lower surface of the leaves and beneath the stems of , also known as the stinging nettle, herbal nettle that is dioecious, upright, and unbranched. For the treatment of conditions like gastritis, heart disease, diabetes, gonorrhea, and malaria, people employ various portions of in a variety of ways in traditional medicine. The leaves are rich in variety of active secondary phytochemical constituents including terpenoids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, steroids, alkaloids, polyphenols, sterols, oxalate, and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). According to different reports, it possesses a variety of pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, antiproliferative, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, antiulcer, antibacterial, and antifungal actions. The current review summarizes published and unpublished information about the ethnobotanical, phytochemical, ethnopharmacological, and toxicological reports of and summarizes all the research work carried out on this plant to provide updated information for future work.
