BACKGROUND
Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a disabling complication of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for acetabular fractures. There is a trend towards acute total hip arthroplasty (THA), 'fix-and-replace', in patients considered to have a poor prognosis and likelihood of PTOA. Controversy remains between early fix-and-replace, versus delayed THA as required after initial ORIF. This systematic review included studies comparing functional and clinical outcomes between acute versus delayed THA after displaced acetabular fractures.
METHODS
Comprehensive searches following the PRISMA guideline were performed on six databases for articles in English published anytime up to 29 March 2021. Two authors screened articles and discrepancies were resolved by consensus. Patient demographics, fracture classification, functional and clinical outcomes were compiled and analysed.
RESULTS
The search yielded 2770 unique studies, of which five retrospective studies were identified with a total of 255 patients. Of them, 138 (54.1%) were treated with acute and 117 (45.9%) treated with delayed THA. Delayed THA group represented a younger cohort compared to the acute group (mean age, 64.3 vs 73.3). The mean follow-up time for the acute and delayed group was 23 and 50 months, respectively. There was no difference in functional outcomes between the two study groups. Complication and mortality rates were comparable. Delayed THA had a higher revision rate compared to the acute group (17.1 vs 4.3%; p = 0.002).
CONCLUSION
Fix-and-replace had functional outcomes and complication rates similar to ORIF and delayed THA, but lower revision rates. Although the quality of studies was mixed, sufficient equipoise now exists to justify randomised studies in this area. PROSPERO registration: CRD42021235730.

BACKGROUND
The aim of this systematic review was to determine whether strength exercises improve the symptoms of menopause and to provide an update on the most recent scientific evidence on the type and regimen of exercise that help reduce the symptoms.
METHODS
An electronic search of scientific databases was performed from 2015 to 2022. Randomized clinical trials that analyzed the effects of strength exercises versus other types of interventions, considering all the outcome measures of interest, were included in this review.
RESULTS
We found 5964 potential articles. After applying the selection criteria, we selected 12 of the articles. The studies compared strength exercises versus other therapies or compared strength exercises versus no intervention in one of the groups. The results showed improvements in the strength of the legs and pelvic floor, physical activity, bone density, metabolic and hormonal changes, heart rate and blood pressure and a change in hot flashes.
CONCLUSIONS
There is evidence that strength exercises can be beneficial for improving strength, physical activity, bone density and hormonal and metabolic levels. In terms of the appropriate type of strength training, the evidence is still unclear given that the same benefits are achieved by various types of exercises.

BACKGROUND
Virtual and augmented reality (VAR) represents a combination of current state-of-the-art computer and imaging technologies and has the potential to be a revolutionary technology in many surgical fields. An increasing number of investigators have developed and applied VAR in hip-related surgery with the aim of using this technology to reduce hip surgery-related complications, improve surgical success rates, and reduce surgical risks. These technologies are beginning to be widely used in hip-related preoperative operation simulation and training, intraoperative navigation tools in the operating room, and postoperative rehabilitation.
OBJECTIVE
With the aim of reviewing the current status of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in hip-related surgery and summarizing its benefits, we discussed and briefly described the applicability, advantages, limitations, and future perspectives of VR and AR techniques in hip-related surgery, such as preoperative operation simulation and training; explored the possible future applications of AR in the operating room; and discussed the bright prospects of VR and AR technologies in postoperative rehabilitation after hip surgery.
METHODS
We searched the PubMed and Web of Science databases using the following key search terms: ("virtual reality" OR "augmented reality") AND ("pelvis" OR "hip"). The literature on basic and clinical research related to the aforementioned key search terms, that is, studies evaluating the key factors, challenges, or problems of using of VAR technology in hip-related surgery, was collected.
RESULTS
A total of 40 studies and reports were included and classified into the following categories: total hip arthroplasty, hip resurfacing, femoral neck fracture, pelvic fracture, acetabular fracture, tumor, arthroscopy, and postoperative rehabilitation. Quality assessment could be performed in 30 studies. Among the clinical studies, there were 16 case series with an average score of 89 out of 100 points (89%) and 1 case report that scored 81 (SD 10.11) out of 100 points (81%) according to the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist. Two cadaveric studies scored 85 of 100 points (85%) and 92 of 100 points (92%) according to the Quality Appraisal for Cadaveric Studies scale.
CONCLUSIONS
VR and AR technologies hold great promise for hip-related surgeries, especially for preoperative operation simulation and training, feasibility applications in the operating room, and postoperative rehabilitation, and have the potential to assist orthopedic surgeons in operating more accurately and safely. More comparative studies are necessary, including studies focusing on clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness.

OBJECTIVE
Liner dissociation (LD) is a rare catastrophic mechanical failure of total hip arthroplasty (THA). The study aims at reviewing the available literature regarding liner dissociations to point out their prevalence, describing any possible association and highlighting the surgical management at the time of revision.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A systematic review of the literature was conducted from January 2002, until February 2022, according to the PRISMA guidelines. The main keywords were: "dissociation" AND "liner" OR "hip arthroplasty" OR "THA" and their MeSH terms in any possible combination. Cases of liner dissociation with all levels of evidence of any age published in indexed journals were included. The study quality of all included studies was evaluated using the MINORS criteria. The kappa (k) value was used to assess the consensus between reviewers in the selection of articles and methodological quality assessment. Finally, a sub-analysis was performed specifically concerning the elderly population.
RESULTS
Thirty-one manuscripts met the inclusion criteria of the systematic review (21 case reports and 10 case series). 124 LD in 123 patients, (53% females and 47% males) were evaluated. The overall prevalence of LD was 0.15%. The mean age at surgery was of 56.5 years (range 31-75 years). LD occurred in a primary surgery setting in 86% of the cases, at a mean time of presentation of 45.8 months after replacement surgery. 39.5% of the cups and 8.8% of the stems required revision. The mean follow-up after the revision was 18.4 months. Complications after revision occurred in 19.6% of cases, including 3 cases of re-dissociations. Re-revision was required in 13.6% of the revisions. The sub-analysis of the elderly population included 28 cases of LD identified in 10 manuscripts, with an average age of 73.5 years.
CONCLUSIONS
LD is a rare but catastrophic mechanical complication of modular THA that requires implant revision. The LD is not related to a specific prosthetic implant, liner material or design, acetabular positioning within the safe zone or age group.

INTRODUCTION
Although many articles report complications after pelvic ring and acetabular fracture surgery, a general overview of complication rates and potential risk factors is lacking. The current review provides a comprehensive summary of the complications after pelvic ring and acetabular fracture surgery in relation to the surgical approach.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Pubmed and Embase databases were systematically searched using the key words: pelvic fracture, acetabular fracture, fixation, surgical approaches, complications, and their synonyms. Extracted data included patient and fracture characteristics, surgical approaches, and post-operative complications; surgical site infections (SSI), implant-related complications, malunion and non-union. Study data were summarized using descriptive statistics.
RESULTS
Twenty-two studies (twenty-one retrospective cohort studies, of which three comparative, and one randomized controlled trial) were included in this review. The overall complication rates reported for the included surgical approaches were: 17% for the (Modified) Stoppa approach, 11% for percutaneous fixation, 5% for the Kocher-Langenbeck approach, 7% for the ilioinguinal approach and 31% for external fixation. The most frequent complications were SSI (22%) and neurological (31%) complications, which were most often reported in patients treated with an external fixator. Re-operation rates were comparable for the surgical approaches (4-8%). Two studies reported on risk factors and identified concomitant traumatic injuries, prolonged ICU stay and high body mass index as risk factors for SSI.
CONCLUSION
External fixation of pelvic fractures is associated with highest complications rates including SSI's and neurological complications. Although post-operative complications are frequently reported after pelvic fracture surgery, more studies are needed that identify potential risk factors. These will assist the surgeon in (pre)operative decision making and development of preventive strategies.

Prolonged intrauterine retention of fetal bones during an abortion procedure can lead to secondary infertility. This review aimed to raise awareness among obstetric/gynaecologists about the possibility of this condition. A total of 17 case reports, seven case series and one retrospective study were included in this review, with 75 patients in total. Overall, 60% had a pregnancy termination in the second trimester, while 20% had a termination during the first trimester. Hysteroscopic resection was used to remove the intrauterine fetal bones in 69% of patients. In total, 59% of patients conceived following the procedure, 1% conceived despite the presence of intrauterine bones, 24% could not conceive at the time of the study and 16% had an unknown outcome. Transvaginal ultrasound was used for diagnosis in 41 (55%) patients, while pelvic ultrasound was used in 21 (28%) patients. In conclusion, secondary infertility is a common occurrence after a dilation and curettage procedure partially due to fetal bone retention. The gold standard for an accurate diagnosis and treatment is hysteroscopy.

AIMS
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to gather epidemiological information on selected musculoskeletal injuries and to provide pooled injury-specific incidence rates.
METHODS
PubMed (National Library of Medicine) and Scopus (Elsevier) databases were searched. Articles were eligible for inclusion if they reported incidence rate (or count with population at risk), contained data on adult population, and were written in English language. The number of cases and population at risk were collected, and the pooled incidence rates (per 100,000 person-years) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by using either a fixed or random effects model.
RESULTS
The screening of titles yielded 206 articles eligible for inclusion in the study. Of these, 173 (84%) articles provided sufficient information to be included in the pooled incidence rates. Incidences of fractures were investigated in 154 studies, and the most common fractures in the whole adult population based on the pooled incidence rates were distal radius fractures (212.0, 95% CI 178.1 to 252.4 per 100,000 person-years), finger fractures (117.1, 95% CI 105.3 to 130.2 per 100,000 person-years), and hip fractures (112.9, 95% CI 82.2 to 154.9 per 100,000 person-years). The most common sprains and dislocations were ankle sprains (429.4, 95% CI 243.0 to 759.0 per 100,000 person-years) and first-time patellar dislocations (32.8, 95% CI 21.6 to 49.7 per 100,000 person-years). The most common injuries were anterior cruciate ligament (17.5, 95% CI 6.0 to 50.2 per 100,000 person-years) and Achilles (13.7, 95% CI 9.6 to 19.5 per 100,000 person-years) ruptures.
CONCLUSION
The presented pooled incidence estimates serve as important references in assessing the global economic and social burden of musculoskeletal injuries.Cite this article: 2022;11(11):814-825.

The aim of this systematic review was to compare patient-reported outcomes after harvesting calvarial or anterior iliac crest bone grafts to repair severe jaw defects and enable implant placement. The MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases, and OpenGrey were searched for studies on patient satisfaction, pain, disturbances in daily functioning, sensory alterations, donor site aesthetics, and complication rates. Of the 1946 articles identified, 43 reporting 40 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria; the studies were one randomized controlled clinical trial, one retrospective controlled clinical trial, and 23 prospective and 15 retrospective cohort studies. A meta-analysis of two studies (74 patients) showed no difference in satisfaction (mean difference (MD) - 0.13, 95% confidence interval (CI) - 1.17 to 0.92; P = 0.813) or postoperative pain (directly postoperative: MD -2.32, 95% CI -5.20 to 0.55, P = 0.113; late postoperative: MD -0.01, 95% CI -0.14 to 0.11, P = 0.825) between donor sites. However, the level of evidence is limited, due to the retrospective, non-randomized design of one study. Postoperative gait disturbances were highly prevalent among the anterior iliac crest patients (28-100% after 1 week). The incidence rates of sensory disturbances and other complications were low, and the donor site aesthetic outcomes were favourable for both graft types. To conclude, harvesting bone grafts from the calvarium or anterior iliac crest to augment the severely resorbed edentulous jaw results in similar patient satisfaction. However, the findings for postoperative pain and disturbances in daily living suggest a trend in favour of calvarial bone grafts if harvested using an adjusted technique.

INTRODUCTION
Posterior shoulder instability (PSI) is a rare and challenging pathology to manage. The aim of this review was to assess and compare whether open and arthroscopic iliac crest bone graft (ICBG) bone block procedures succeeded in improving functional and clinical outcomes as well as radiological outcomes of union and graft resorption.
HYPOTHESIS
We hypothesised that there will be no difference in recurrence rate and functional outcome between open and arthroscopic procedures but there will be a higher complication rate with open bone block procedures.
METHODS
A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines using the online databases MEDLINE and Embase. The review was registered on the PROSPERO database. Studies of open or arthroscopic ICBG bone block procedures reporting patient reported outcome measures, recurrence, complications and progression to osteoarthritis and radiological outcomes of graft union and resorption were selected. Studies were appraised using the Methodical index for non-randomised studies (MINORS) tool.
RESULTS
14 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria; five studies were arthroscopic and nine used open techniques. A total of 183 patients and 201 shoulders were included, mean age was 25 years range (14-75 years). Recurrent instability ranged from 0% to 12.5% for arthroscopic and 0% to 36.4% for open studies. Arthroscopic studies had statistically significant increases in numerous functional outcome scores but there was no evidence for similar improvements in open studies. Osteoarthritis at follow-up ranged from 12.5% to 47% in arthroscopic and 0% to 81.8% for open studies. Arthroscopic complication rate ranged from 6.7% to 75% compared to 0% to 80% for open studies. Majority of complications were metalware related requiring surgical intervention. Partial graft resorption ranged from 7.7-100% after arthroscopic and 4.8-100% after open procedures. High union rates were seen with both open and arthroscopic techniques.
CONCLUSION
This study highlights a lack of high-level evidence for arthroscopic and open posterior bone block procedures using ICBG to manage PSI. Functional and instability outcome scores showed significant improvement with arthroscopic ICBG bone block procedures however limited evidence was available for open studies. Metalwork related complications requiring revision and radiographic progression to osteoarthritis was high in both arthroscopic and open studies.

INTRODUCTION
Stemmed acetabular cups are suitable for reconstruction in case of important bone loss. Nevertheless, their use is not so common, because generally judged very invasive and technically difficult to implant. The aim of the present review is to verify the results of their use and to evaluate indications and complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Literature research was performed in the main healthcare databases; indications, surgical technique, related complications, functional results and implant survival were valued and analyzed for every selected paper.
RESULTS
13 studies were selected, for a population of 424 patients and 428 hips. The main indication was reconstruction after tumor removal; the primary non-oncologic indication was revision for aseptic loosening. The most frequent complications were aseptic loosening and implant failure (16.2%), followed by deep infection (11.3%) and dislocation (9.8%). The average MSTS score was 65.9%; while data regarding functional results for degenerative cases are quite fragmented. The 5-years implant survival was 73.6%.
CONCLUSIONS
Data regarding SAC prostheses are quite rare in the literature; no prospective studies with comparisons with other reconstruction techniques are available so their use is mainly based on the experience of single centers. While data for tumors are more consistent and supported by studies, information on revisions of hip prosthesis implanted for degenerative problems is quite scarce. Preliminary results on the SAC prosthesis as a valid alternative both for tumoral and degenerative revision cases are encouraging. Prospective randomized studies are advocated to value results compared to alternative techniques.
