Since ancient times, acupuncture has been utilized in the treatment of lots of diseases, as a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupoint embedding (AEM) therapy, known as catgut embedding, is a development of acupuncture that consists of inserting catgut or surgical threads into specific acupoints to produce continuous acupoint stimulation based on the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The remaining thread in the acupoint works as a semi-permanent acupuncture needle that results in decreasing the total time of the treatment which is required for continuous manual acupuncture sessions and increasing the treatment efficacy and patients' satisfaction. In each session of AEM about twenty 1 to 2 cm-long threads-natural origin, synthetic polymer, or bioactive threads-will be inserted at the target acupoints and this process will be repeated every 3 to 4 weeks. Indications of AEM are somehow similar to manual acupuncture including obesity, pain, musculoskeletal inflammations, infertility, etc, and it cannot be performed on pregnant women and pediatrics. AEM demonstrates its therapeutic effects via modulating immune system function, alleviating body inflammatory conditions, affecting the neurohormonal system, and other mechanisms. Subcutaneous indurations, redness, bleeding, hematoma, and bruising are some adverse events reported following the AEM. In conclusion, the scientific literature suggests that AEM is a relatively safe and convenient therapy if performed by a professional skilled practitioner.

OBJECTIVE
The goal of the research is to investigate the link between serum potassium levels and death after 28 days in sepsis patients, utilizing an extensive sample of patients from the multi-center Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database. Current research on serum potassium levels and 28-day mortality in sepsis patients is questionable. This study adds to the growing body of evidence linking serum potassium levels to the 28-day possibility of death in patients with sepsis.
METHODS
We collected 349,08 patients with sepsis from the retrospective cohort MIMIC-IV database, using serum potassium level on the first day of admission to the intensive care unit as the exposure variable and mortality at 28 days as the outcome variable. And controlled for confounding characteristics including gender, age, ethnicity, and vital signs during admission.
RESULTS
Serum potassium has a U-shaped connection with 28-day mortality in patients suffering from sepsis. The turning point was 4.10 mmol/L (95 % confidence interval: 4.03 to 4.22). Serum potassium and 28-day mortality were negatively linked on the inflection point's left side (OR: 0.72; 95 % CI: 0.63 to 0.83, P < 0.0001); on the opposing side of the point of inflexion, serum potassium was enthusiastically attached to 28-day mortality. (OR: 1.13; 95 % CI: 1.06 to 1.21, P < 0.0001).
CONCLUSION
The research conducted found that too high or too low potassium levels were linked to a 28-day risk of mortality in humans with sepsis.

Fidelity to the acupuncture intervention protocol in the ACUpuncture In The EmergencY department for pain management (ACUITY) trial: Expanding the gold standard of STRICTA and CONSORT guidelines.
BACKGROUND
Acupuncture shows promise as an effective nonpharmacologic option for reduction of acute pain in the emergency department (ED). Following CONSORT and STRICTA guidelines, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) generally report intervention details and acupoint options, but fidelity to acupuncture interventions, critical to reliability in intervention research, is rarely reported.
METHODS
ACUITY is an NCCIH-funded, multi-site feasibility RCT of acupuncture in 3 EDs (Cleveland, Nashville, and San Diego). ACUITY acupuncturists were trained in study design, responsive acupuncture manualization protocol, logistics and real-time recording of session details via REDCap forms created to track fidelity.
RESULTS
Across 3 recruiting sites, 79 participants received acupuncture: 51 % women, 43 % Black/African American, with heterogeneous acute pain sites at baseline: 32 % low back, 22 % extremity, 20 % abdominal, 10 % head. Pragmatically, participants were treated in ED common areas (52 %), private rooms (39 %), and semi-private rooms (9 %). Objective tracking found 98 % adherence to the six components of the acupuncture manualization protocol: staging, number of insertion points ( = 13.2, range 2-22), needle retention time ( = 23.5 min, range 4-52), session length ( = 40.3 min, range 20-66), whether general recommendations were provided and completion of the session form.
CONCLUSION
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first RCT to assess and report fidelity to an acupuncture protocol. Fidelity monitoring will be fundamental for ACUITY2, which would be a future definitive, multi-site RCT. Furthermore, we recommend that fidelity to acupuncture interventions be added to CONSORT and STRICTA reporting guidelines in future RCTs.

Uterine fibroids, benign tumors originating from uterine smooth muscle cells, vary in prevalence depending on patient ethnicity, hormonal exposure, and genetics. Due to their high incidence, these neoplasms pose a significant burden on healthcare systems. Current treatment strategies range from routine monitoring in asymptomatic cases to surgical procedures such as myomectomy or hysterectomy in symptomatic patients, with an increasing trend toward uterus-preserving or non-surgical alternatives. This review examines the existing medical treatments for uterine fibroids and delves into the potential of emerging therapies. A scoping review of the literature was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. Medical therapies are divided into hormonal and non-hormonal treatments; however, long-term, safe, and effective treatments in the treatment of uterine fibroids are limited. In addition to established therapies, there is an increasing number of studies investigating the effect of substances such as vitamin D or green tea extract on uterine fibroids. Some studies investigate acupuncture as a possible alternative therapy. While existing treatments offer symptomatic relief and preparation for surgery, our findings point to a significant need for further research into long-term solutions, especially owing to recent limitations in the use of ulipristal acetate due to risk of liver damage. Initial studies involving vitamin D and epigallocatechin gallate are encouraging; however, additional research is required to establish definitive therapeutic roles.

BACKGROUND
Studies on the relationship between the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and bone mineral density (BMD) among adult women in the United States are limited. The purpose of this study was to explore this association using a sizable, nationally representative sample.
METHODS
Data from the 2011 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used in this observational study. The AIP was computed as log (triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol). Total BMD was measured via dual-energy X-ray densitometry. We constructed multiple linear regression models to evaluate the correlation between the AIP and BMD. The non-linear relationship was characterized by smooth curve fitting and generalized additive models. We also conducted subgroup and interaction analyses.
RESULTS
In this study, we included 2,362 adult women with a mean age of 38.13 ± 12.42 years. The results of multiple linear regression analysis, the AIP and total BMD showed a negative association (β = -0.021, 95%CI: -0.037, -0.006). The curve fitting analysis and threshold effect analysis showed a non-linear relationship between the two variables, and the inflection point of the AIP was found to be -0.61. The total BMD decreased significantly when the AIP reached this value (β = -0.03, 95%CI: -0.04, -0.01). The results of the subgroup analysis showed that AIP and total BMD had a strong negative relationship in participants who were below 45 years old (β = -0.023; 95% CI: -0.041, -0.004), overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m) (β = -0.022; 95% CI: -0.041, -0.002), had a higher education level (β = -0.025; 95% CI: -0.044, -0.006), and had no partners (β = -0.014; 95% CI: -0.06, -0.009).
CONCLUSIONS
We found a negative correlation between the AIP and total BMD. Clinicians should pay attention to patients with high AIP, which might indicate a low BMD and has reference significance in preventing osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND
Lumbar radiculopathy spondylosis is a relatively common orthopedic disease with a high incidence rate. It most commonly occurs in the lumbar 4-5 and lumbar 5-sacral 1 vertebrae, which account for approximately 95% of cases. It mostly occurs in people aged 30-50 years old and greatly affects their quality of life.
AIM
To determine the effect of triple-voltage acupuncture combined with helium-neon laser irradiation on the quality of care and improvement of symptoms in patients with lumbar radiculopathy spondylolisthesis.
METHODS
In this study, we selected 120 patients with lumbar radiculopathy spondylosis who were treated at our hospital between June 2019 to June 2020. The patients were divided into control and observation groups according to the random number table method, with 60 patients in each group. Patients in the observation group were treated with three-volt moxibustion combined with helium-neon laser irradiation, and those in the control group were treated with lumbar traction. After 1 month of treatment, the lumbar pain scores, lumbar spine motor functions, clinical treatment effects, and nursing satisfaction of the two groups were compared.
RESULTS
The results showed that acupuncture combined with laser irradiation significantly improved the patients' clinical symptoms, , reduced their low back pain, significantly lower numerical rating scale pain scores in the observation group than in the control group, and better lumbar spine motility than in the control group, compared to lumbar traction. In addition, they were cared for. The treatment effectiveness rate of the observation group was 95.5%, which was significantly higher than that of the control group (81.67%). Satisfaction with care was higher than 90 points in both groups, but the difference was not statistically significant.
CONCLUSION
Our study provides a clinical rationale for the future treatment of patients with lumbar spine disease. However, further extensive research is needed for validation.

PURPOSE
This study aimed to apply the bibliometric analysis to summarize acupuncture therapy for stroke, demonstrated and evaluated the trends, major research hotspots and frontier areas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Articles on acupuncture for stroke were selected from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) from the inception of the database up until 2023. CiteSpace software was performed to conduct the collaborative analysis of networks of countries, institutions, authors and cited authors, journals and cited journals, cited references, keywords clustering and burstiness analysis.
RESULTS
A total of 1141 articles were retrieved. China was the most productive country (851) and had the greatest centrality (0.43). Beijing Univ Chinese Med (86) contributed to the most publications. Chen LD (31) and Tao J (31) were the most prolific authors, of which all from Fujian Univ Tradit Chinese Med. Wu P (124) from Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, Canada, was the most cited author. Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (89) was the most productive journal, while Stroke (744) was first cited journals. Stimulation, recovery, ischemic stroke, electroacupuncture, rehabilitation were the most high-frequency keywords. Future research in this area will pay more attention to the evaluation of the effectiveness of acupuncture therapeutics in treating stroke, conducting the clinical research on cognitive ability, quality of life and partial function of stroke patients, and basic research related to mechanisms.
CONCLUSION
The publications on acupuncture in stroke have shown major development, but the international cooperation for academic exchange among researchers and institutions remained to be strengthened to promote interdisciplinary and academic innovation. Furthermore, except for the molecular mechanism of acupuncture in treating functional rehabilitation of stroke, exploring the more high-quality clinical studies may become a key point based on the evidence-based medicine.

STUDY OBJECTIVE
Acute musculoskeletal pain in emergency department (ED) patients is frequently severe and challenging to treat with medications alone. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of adding ED acupuncture to treat acute episodes of musculoskeletal pain in the neck, back, and extremities.
METHODS
In this pragmatic 2-stage adaptive open-label randomized clinical trial, Stage 1 identified whether auricular acupuncture (AA; based on the battlefield acupuncture protocol) or peripheral acupuncture (PA; needles in head, neck, and extremities only), when added to usual care was more feasible, acceptable, and efficacious in the ED. Stage 2 assessed effectiveness of the selected acupuncture intervention(s) on pain reduction compared to usual care only (UC). Licensed acupuncturists delivered AA and PA. They saw and evaluated but did not deliver acupuncture to the UC group as an attention control. All participants received UC from blinded ED providers. Primary outcome was 1-hour change in 11-point pain numeric rating scale.
RESULTS
Stage 1 interim analysis found both acupuncture styles similar, so Stage 2 continued all 3 treatment arms. Among 236 participants randomized, demographics and baseline pain were comparable across groups. When compared to UC alone, reduction in pain was 1.6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.7 to 2.6) points greater for AA+UC and 1.2 (95% CI: 0.3 to 2.1) points greater for PA+UC patients. Participants in both treatment arms reported high satisfaction with acupuncture.
CONCLUSION
ED acupuncture is feasible and acceptable and can reduce acute musculoskeletal pain better than UC alone.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
BACKGROUND Micro-needle knife (MNK) therapy releases the superficial fascia to alleviate pain and improve joint function in patients with acute ankle sprains (AAS). We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of MNK therapy vs that of acupuncture. MATERIAL AND METHODS This blinded assessor, randomized controlled trial allocated 80 patients with AAS to 2 parallel groups in a 1: 1 ratio. The experimental group received MNK therapy; the control group underwent conventional acupuncture treatment at specified acupoints. Clinical efficacy differences between the 2 groups before (time-point 1 [TP1]) and after treatment (TP2) were evaluated using the visual analogue scale (VAS) and Kofoed ankle score. Safety records and evaluations of adverse events were documented. One-month follow-up after treatment (TP3) was conducted to assess the intervention scheme's reliability. RESULTS VAS and Kofoed ankle scores significantly improved in both groups. No patients dropped due to adverse events. At TP1, there were no significant differences between the 2 groups in terms of VAS and Kofoed scores (P>0.05). However, at TP2, efficacy of MNK therapy in releasing the superficial fascia was significantly superior to that of acupuncture treatment (P<0.001). At TP3, no significant differences in scores existed between the groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that 6 sessions of MNK therapy to release the superficial fascia safely and effectively alleviated pain and enhanced ankle joint function in patients with AAS, surpassing the efficacy of conventional acupuncture treatment. Future studies should increase the sample size and introduce additional control groups to further validate the superior clinical efficacy of this intervention.

BACKGROUND
The existing literature has limited detail on theory-driven interventions, particularly in pain studies. We adapted Bandura's self-efficacy framework toward a theory-driven, non-pharmacological intervention using auricular point acupressure (APA) and evaluated participants' perceptions of this intervention on their pain self-management. APA is a non-invasive modality based on auricular acupuncture principles.
METHODS
We mapped our study intervention components according to Bandura's key sources of self-efficacy (performance accomplishments, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, and emotional arousal) to facilitate the self-management of pain. Through a qualitative study design, we conducted virtual interviews at one and three months after a 4-week APA intervention among 23 participants using purposive sampling to describe their experiences in managing their pain based on our theory-driven APA intervention.
RESULTS
Using thematic analyses, we found four themes: the enhanced self-management of pain, improved pain outcomes, the feasibility of technology, and the sustainability of APA.
CONCLUSIONS
Describing how interventions are mapped according to the elements of theoretical frameworks can help to guide intervention development, advance science and knowledge development, and promote the implementation of interventions. As such, using Bandura's self-efficacy theory as a foundation for the APA intervention, APA was found to be feasible and sustainable, improving self-management, pain intensity, and pain-related outcomes. Participants provided recommendations for the further improvement of this theory-driven intervention.
