The microbial ecosystem of women undergoes enormous changes during pregnancy and the perinatal period. Little is known about the extent of changes in the maternal microbiome beyond the vaginal cavity and its recovery after birth. In this study, we followed pregnant women [maternal prepartum (mpre), = 30] into the postpartum period [1 month postpartum, maternal postpartum (mpost), = 30]. We profiled their oral, urinary, and vaginal microbiome; archaeome; mycobiome; and urinary metabolome and compared them with those of nonpregnant (np) women ( = 29). Overall, pregnancy status (np, mpre, and mpost) had a smaller effect on the microbiomes than body site, but massive transitions were observed for the oral and urogenital (vaginal and urinary) microbiomes. While the oral microbiome fluctuates during pregnancy but stabilizes rapidly within the first month postpartum, the urogenital microbiome is characterized by a major remodeling caused by a massive loss of and thus a shift from Vaginal Community State Type (CST) I (40% of women) to CST IV (85% of women). The urinary metabolome rapidly reached an np-like composition after delivery, apart from lactose and oxaloacetic acid, which were elevated during active lactation. Fungal and archaeal profiles were indicative of pregnancy status. signatures were found mainly in np women, and showed an opposite behavior in the oral cavity (increased) and vagina (decreased) during pregnancy. Our findings suggest that the massive remodeling of the maternal microbiome and metabolome needs more attention and that potential interventions could be envisioned to optimize recovery and avoid long-term effects on maternal health and subsequent pregnancies.
IMPORTANCE
The perinatal microbiome is of specific interest for the health of the mother and infant. We therefore investigate the dynamics of the female microbiome from nonpregnant over prepartum to the postpartum period in urine and the oral and vaginal cavities. A specific focus of this study is put not only on the bacterial part of the microbiome but also on the underinvestigated contribution of fungi and archaea. To our knowledge, we present the first study highlighting those aspects. Our findings suggest that the massive remodeling of the maternal microbiome and metabolome needs more attention and that potential interventions could be envisioned to optimize recovery and avoid long-term effects on maternal health and subsequent pregnancies.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the incidence of congenital syphilis and the ratio between congenital syphilis and syphilis in pregnant women in Brazil according to socioeconomic indicators (inadequate water supply and sanitation; illiteracy at 15 years of age or older; household income per capita; proportion of poor people; Gini index; human development index; and average health expenditure per inhabitant by the health system) and prenatal quality-of-care indicators. We conducted an ecological study using a sample composed of 257 municipalities, each with ≥ 100,000 inhabitants. Data was collected from four public databases: the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, comprising socioeconomical data from the 2010 census; and the data of 2019 available in the databases of the Department of Informatics of the Brazilian Health System, Information and Management of Primary Care, and the Electronic Citizen Information System. Descriptive analysis of dependent and independent variables and bivariate analysis by Negative Binomial regression were carried out. The mean incidence of congenital syphilis was 38% higher in municipalities with a Human Development Index up to 0.785 (ratio of means [RM] = 1.38; p = 0.049) and 57% higher among populations where less than 50% of primary healthcare services provided a rapid test for syphilis (RM = 1.57; p < 0.001). The ratio between congenital syphilis and syphilis in pregnant women was 29% higher in municipalities with a low household income per capita (RM = 1.29; p < 0.001) and 28% higher in locations where less than 50% of the primary healthcare services provided a rapid test for syphilis (RM = 1.28; p < 0.001). There was no statistical significance of the quality of prenatal care compared to the outcomes. This result underscores the challenges in detecting syphilis infections among pregnant women during prenatal care, consequently increasing the risk of vertical transmission of the disease to the fetus. Traits of inequality in the occurrence of congenital syphilis also draw attention to strategies to reduce health inequities and improve prenatal care.

Low and high beta frequency rhythms were observed in the motor cortex, but their respective sources and behavioral correlates remain unknown. We studied local field potentials (LFPs) during pre-cued reaching behavior in macaques. They contained a low beta band (<20 Hz) dominant in primary motor cortex and a high beta band (>20 Hz) dominant in dorsal premotor cortex (PMd). Low beta correlated positively with reaction time (RT) from visual cue onset and negatively with uninstructed hand postural micro-movements throughout the trial. High beta reflected temporal task prediction, with selective modulations before and during cues, which were enhanced in moments of increased focal attention when the gaze was on the work area. This double-dissociation in sources and behavioral correlates of motor cortical low and high beta, with respect to both task-instructed and spontaneous behavior, reconciles the largely disparate roles proposed for the beta rhythm, by suggesting band-specific roles in both movement control and spatiotemporal attention.

INTRODUCTION
With the rapid pace of population aging, the health issues of the older adult have garnered widespread attention. Social participation plays a pivotal role in the health of the older adult. This study aims to explore the impact of social participation on the health status of the older adult.
METHODS
Using a binary logistic regression model, this study analyzes the influence of social participation methods on the health status of older adult individuals in China based on cross-sectional data from the "China Comprehensive Social Survey" in 2021. The study sample comprises individuals aged 60 to 99 years.
RESULTS
It was found that participation in physical activities [P<0.001, OR = 1.907], social and recreational activities [P<0.001, OR = 1.387], and online activities [P<0.001, OR = 1.808] were significantly positively correlated with the health status of the older adult.
CONCLUSIONS
The health of older adults is influenced by a combination of physical activities, social and recreational activities, and online activities. Good health is closely associated with high levels of physical activity. Engaging in physical exercise promotes physiological health, while participating in social and recreational activities has a significant impact on cognitive and depressive states. Additionally, involvement in online activities helps alleviate feelings of loneliness and enhances overall well-being.

Study protocol for ADHERE (Applying Directly observed therapy to HydroxyurEa to Realize Effectiveness): Using small business partnerships to deliver a scalable and novel hydroxyurea adherence solution to youth with sickle cell disease.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that affects approximately 100,000 Americans, primarily from underrepresented racial minority populations, and results in costly, multi-organ complications. Hydroxyurea, the primary disease-modifying therapy for SCD, is effective at reducing most complications; however, adherence to hydroxyurea remains suboptimal and is the primary barrier to clinical effectiveness. Video directly observed therapy (VDOT) has shown promise as an adherence-promoting intervention for hydroxyurea, yet previous VDOT trials were limited by high attrition from gaps in technology access, use of unvalidated adherence measures, and healthcare system limitations of delivering VDOT to patients. As such, we fostered a small business partnership to compare VDOT for hydroxyurea to attention control to address previous shortcomings, promote equitable trial participation, and maximize scalability. VDOT will be administered by Scene Health (formerly emocha Health) and adherence monitoring will be performed using a novel electronic adherence monitor developed to meet the unique needs of the target population. Adolescent and young adult patients as well as caregivers of younger patients (<11 years of age) will be recruited. In addition to visit incentives, all participants will be offered a smartphone with a data plan to ensure all participants have equal opportunity to complete study activities. The primary objectives of this pilot, multi-center, randomized controlled trial (RCT) are to assess retention and sustained engagement and to explore needs and preferences for longer-term adherence monitoring and interventions. This RCT is registered with the National Institutes of Health (NCT06264700). Findings will inform a future efficacy RCT applying VDOT to hydroxyurea to address adherence gaps and improve outcomes within this vulnerable population.

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is one of the most widely cultivated industrial crops worldwide. From April to July 2023, about 40% of tobacco seedlings in the greenhouse exhibited irregular taupe lesions in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China. At an early stage of the lesion development, light grey spots with the diameter of 1-2 mm were observed, these spots gradually expanded and connected into large irregular lesions causing leaf wrinkling or withered. A total of 12 infected leaf tissues were sterilized with 75% ethanol for 45 s, rinsed three times in sterilized water and then plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium for 10 days at 28°C in darkness. Seven fungal colonies that show the similar appearance were isolated and three of them (MB-1, MB-2 and MB-3) were used for subsequent identification. Colonies of these strains on PDA with loose mycelium and orange-red pigment on the underside, white aerial in the center and light yellow hyphae near the periphery, formed in the shape of a concentric ring pattern. Ascomata appeared from the 14th day, were black, spherical or ellipsoid with walls of textura angularis, and size was 53.8-101.1 μm × 50.3-104.3 μm (n=30). Terminal hairs were brown and straight, gradually tapering toward the tips. Asci clavate or fusiform, spore bearing part 16.2-29.2 × 7.3-11.4 μm (n=21), with 8 irregularly arranged ascospores, evanescent. Ascospores are brown at maturity, biapiculate, navicular or fusiform shapes with size of 8.7-12.8 μm × 4.8-6.9 μm (n=100), and more or less inaequilateral. Single spore strains derived from these strains exhibited the morphological features consistent with the original strains. The morphological characteristics of the fungus were consistent with the description of Arcopilus aureus (Chivers) X.W. Wang & Samson (= Chaetomium aureum Chivers) (Lee et al. 2019). Furthermore, the sequences of RPB2 region were amplified from these strains and the result sequences (GenBank accession no. OR513105-OR513108) all showed a 100.00% identity with A. aureus strain CBS 538.73 (GenBank accession no. KX976807.1). It was reported that the RPB2 gene was efficient in discriminating Arcopilus species (Tavares et al. 2022), thus a maximum likelihood (ML) phylogenetic tree based on the RPB2 gene sequences were constructed using MEGA 7.0 with 1000 replications of bootstrapping (Kumar et al. 2016), which revealed that these strains formed a well-supported clade with A. aureus strains of (CBS 153.52 and CBS538.73) (Wang et al. 2022). Pathogenicity analysis were performed on healthy flue-cured tobacco seedlings leaves (cv Y85) by using mycelial agar plugs (5 mm in diameter) and spore suspension (1×106 spores/mL), and the PDA plugs and sterile water were used for control group, respectively. Tobacco seedlings were incubated in a 25°C and 70% RH growth chamber. After seven days, the leaves showed obvious symptoms, with taupe lesions and yellow halos on the periphery, whereas no symptoms were found on the control leaves. The A. aureu was then reisolated from inoculated diseased leaves. Previously, A. aureus has been only reported to cause leaf black disease on Pseudostellaria heterophylla in China (Yuan et al. 2021). To our knowledge, this is the first reported of A. aureus causing tobacco leaf grey spot worldwide. Arcopilus aureus has been reported as a plant biocontrol fungus (Wang et al. 2013). However, due to the potential serious damage in tobacco seedlings caused by this fungus, the use of A. aureus as a plant biocontrol agent needs to be given more attention, and disease control measures of this pathogen should be developed.

Adaptive motor behavior depends on the coordinated activity of multiple neural systems distributed across the brain. While the role of sensorimotor cortex in motor learning has been well established, how higher-order brain systems interact with sensorimotor cortex to guide learning is less well understood. Using functional MRI, we examined human brain activity during a reward-based motor task where subjects learned to shape their hand trajectories through reinforcement feedback. We projected patterns of cortical and striatal functional connectivity onto a low-dimensional manifold space and examined how regions expanded and contracted along the manifold during learning. During early learning, we found that several sensorimotor areas in the dorsal attention network exhibited increased covariance with areas of the salience/ventral attention network and reduced covariance with areas of the default mode network (DMN). During late learning, these effects reversed, with sensorimotor areas now exhibiting increased covariance with DMN areas. However, areas in posteromedial cortex showed the opposite pattern across learning phases, with its connectivity suggesting a role in coordinating activity across different networks over time. Our results establish the neural changes that support reward-based motor learning and identify distinct transitions in the functional coupling of sensorimotor to transmodal cortex when adapting behavior.

BACKGROUND
Patients with limited English proficiency that are hospitalized without regular access to professional medical interpreters have a longer length of stay (LOS). The authors studied the difference in LOS between English-speaking patients and patients with limited English proficiency in New Hampshire's only academic trauma medical center. The authors also examined race, ethnicity, and distance of residence from hospital.
METHODS
Retrospective data were queried from EPIC, the electronic medical record system used by the authors. Queried data focused on inpatient hospitalizations between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2021. Patient primary language was grouped into English, Spanish, and other non-English language.
RESULTS
Spanish-speaking patients live on average 39.6 miles farther from a hospital than English-speaking patients and have a 0.34 lower case mix index. After English, Spanish is the second-most frequently spoken language. Regression analyses found language to be a significant factor in LOS, LOS variance, and case mix index.
DISCUSSION
A 2.34-day longer LOS for Spanish-speaking patients demonstrates an important health care disparity warranting further attention.

Climate change education is both important and challenging. Prior research suggests that many secondary school science teachers in the United States were conveying "mixed messages" to students that legitimized scientifically unwarranted explanations of recent global warming. In this paper, we focus on US climate education at the middle school level and assess whether teacher attention to recent global warming, and whether the messages conveyed to students, changed between 2014 and 2019. Pooling data from two nationally representative probability surveys of middle school science teachers, we show significant advances on several key criteria, but the prevalence of mixed messages remained high. Exploratory analysis suggests that improvements were spurred partly by the adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards by many states and by partly by shifts in the personal views of science educators.

Biosorption and biomineralization are commonly used for the immobilization of metal ions. Biosorption is commonly used as a green method to enrich rare earth ions from wastewater. However, little attention has been paid to the facilitating role of biomineralization in the enrichment of rare earth ions. In this study, a strain of sp. DW015, isolated from ion adsorption type rare earth ores and a urease-producing strain were used to enrich rare earth elements (REEs) from an aqueous solution. The results indicate that biomineralization accelerates the enrichment of Terbium(III) compared to biosorption alone. Kinetic analysis suggests that the main mode of action of DW015 was biosorption, following pseudo-second-order kinetics ( = 0.998). The biomineralization of DW015 did not significantly contribute to the enrichment of Tb(III), whereas excessive biomineralization of led to a decrease in the enrichment of Tb(III). A synergistic system of biosorption and biomineralization was established by combining the two bacteria, with the optimal mixed bacteria (:DW015) ratio being 1:19. This study provides fundamental support for the synergistic effect of biosorption and biomineralization and offers a new reference for future microbial-based enrichment methods.
IMPORTANCE
A weak microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) promotes the enrichment of Tb(III) by bacteria, while a strong MICP leads to the release of Tb(III). However, existing explanations cannot elucidate these mechanisms. In this study, the morphology of the bioprecipitation and the degree of Tb(III) enrichment were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The data revealed that MICP could drive stable attachment of Tb(III) onto the cell surface, forming a Tb-CaCO mixed solid phase. Excessive rapid rate of calcite generation could disrupt the Tb(III) adsorption equilibrium, leading to the release of Tb(III). Therefore, in order for Tb(III) to be stably embedded in calcite, it is necessary to have a sufficient number of adsorption sites on the bacteria and to regulate the rate of MICP. This study provides theoretical support for the process design of MICP for the enrichment of rare earth ions.
