This species escaped under the management conditions soon after its introduction, and became a harmful weed species. This species has been listed in the top 100 of the world's worst invasive alien species. stands expand quickly and threaten the native flora and fauna including microbiota. This species affects the concentration of carbon and nitrogen in soil and aquatic environments, and increases the amount of pollutants in the local atmosphere. Its infestation also causes serious economic losses on forestry and agriculture. Its characteristics of fast growth, thick canopy structure, enormous vegetative reproduction, and adaptative ability to the various environmental conditions may contribute to the invasiveness and naturalization of this species. The characteristics of regarding their defense functions against their natural enemies and pathogens, and allelopathy may also contribute to the invasiveness of this species. Potential allelochemicals such as xanthoxins, -coumaric acid, caffeic acid, methyl caffeate and daidzein, and two isoflavones with anti-virus activity were identified in this species. In addition, fewer herbivore insects were found in the introduced ranges. These characteristics of may be involved in the invasive mechanisms of the species. This is the first review article focusing on the invasive mechanisms of this species.

Effect of ultrasound and microwave treatment on the level of volatile compounds, total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and isoflavones in soymilk processed with black soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.).
This study analyzed the effect of ultrasound treatment (up to 9 min, 20 kHz, 130 W) on the volatile compounds, total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and isoflavones (daidzein, genistein, daidzin, genistin, and glycitin) in soymilk processed with microwave-roasted (700 W for 270 s) black soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). 1-Hexanol and 1-octen-3-ol, unpleasant soybean flavors, were found to decrease by up to 96.13% and 93.04%, respectively, in ultrasound-treated soymilk compared to the control. 2,3-Diethyl-5-methylpyrazine, a baked flavor, which exhibited the highest odor impact ratio in soymilk processed with microwave-roasted soybean, increased significantly during ultrasound treatment (p < 0.05). The content of total isoflavones, polyphenols, and flavonoids increased (p < 0.05) with the increase in ultrasound treatment time. Spearman's correlation analysis showed that browning was positively correlated (p < 0.01) with total phenols, total furans, total pyrazines, total polyphenols, and total isoflavones. This study discusses the applicability of microwave-roasted soybeans for improving the volatile profile and bioactive compounds in soymilk and provides information on the effects of ultrasound treatment on the volatile compounds, total polyphenols, flavonoids, and isoflavones in soymilk.

Vibriosis and parasitic leech infestations cause the death of various farmed fish, such as groupers, hybrid groupers, sea bass, etc., in Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. In the absence of natural control agents, aquaculture operators rely on toxic chemicals to control Vibrio infections and parasitic leeches, which can have a negative impact on the environment and health. In the present study, we investigated the antivibrio and antiparasitic activities of the aqueous extract of giant sword fern (GSF) (, Nephrolepidaceae, locally known as "Paku Pedang") against four spp. and the parasitic leech , as well as its metabolic composition using the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry system (UHPLC-HRMS). The data show that the aqueous extract of GSF at a concentration of 100 mg/mL exhibits potent bactericidal activity against with a zone of inhibition of 19.5 mm. In addition, the extract showed dose-dependent activity against leeches, resulting in the complete killing of the parasitic leeches within a short period of 11-43 min when tested at concentrations ranging from 100 to 25 mg/mL. The UHPLC-HRMS analysis detected 118 metabolites in the aqueous extract of GSF. Flavonoids were the primary metabolites, followed by phenolic, aromatic, fatty acyl, terpenoid, vitamin and steroidal compounds. Notably, several of these metabolites possess antibacterial and antiparasitic properties, including cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid, apigenin, quercetin, cynaroside, luteolin, naringenin, wogonin, 6-gingerol, nicotinamide, abscisic acid, daidzein, salvianolic acid B, etc. Overall, our study shows the significant antibacterial and antiparasitic potential of the GSF aqueous extract, which demonstrates the presence of valuable secondary metabolites. Consequently, the aqueous extract is a promising natural alternative for the effective control of infections and the treatment of parasitic leeches in aquaculture systems.

The impact of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the biosynthetic manipulation of metabolism where an existing gene cluster is enhanced to produce and enrich bioactive secondary metabolites has been studied previously. In this research, we aimed to isolate and elucidate the structure of metabolites of compounds 1 and 2 which have been analyzed previously in crude extract. This was achieved through a PREP-ODS C18 column with an HPLC-UV/visible detector. Then, the compounds were subjected to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. Furthermore, bioinformatics and transcriptome analysis were used to examine the gene expression for which the secondary metabolites produced in the presence of AuNPs showed significant enhancement in transcriptomic responses. The metabolites of compounds 1 and 2 were identified as daidzein and genistein, respectively. The real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique was used to assess the expression of three genes (, , and ) from a panel of selected genes known to be involved in the biosynthesis of the identified secondary metabolites. The expression levels of two genes ( and ) increased in response to AuNP intervention, whereas was unaffected.

The gut microbiota is a dynamic community of bacteria distributed in the gastroenteric tract and changes in response to diseases, diet, use of antibiotics and probiotics, hygiene status, and other environmental factors. Dysbiosis, a disruption of the normal crosstalk between the host and the microbes, is associated with obesity, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases, is linked to a reduction of anti-inflammatory bacteria like and , and to an increase in the growth of proinflammatory species like and . Some plants possess anticancer properties and various studies have reported that some of these are also able to modulate the gut microbiota. The aim of this work is to evaluate the crucial relationship between medical plants and gut microbiota and the consequences on the onset and progression of cancer. In vivo studies about hematological malignancies showed that beta-glucans tie to endogenous antibeta glucan antibodies and to iC3b, an opsonic fragment of the central complement protein C3, leading to phagocytosis of antibody-targeted neoplastic cells and potentiation of the cytotoxic activity of the innate immune system if administered together with monoclonal antibodies. In conclusion, this review suggests the potential use of medical plants to improve gut dysbiosis and assist in the treatment of cancer.

L. (Bengal gram, chickpea) is one of the major pulse crops and an important part of traditional diets in Asia, Africa, and South America. The present study was conducted to determine the changes in total isoflavones during sprouting (0, 3, and 7 days) along with the effect of two precursor supplementations, -coumaric acid (-CA) and L-phenylalanine (Phe), in . It was observed that increasing sprouting time up to the seventh day resulted in ≈1282 mg 100 g isoflavones, which is approximately eight times higher than chickpea seeds. The supplementation of Phe did not affect the total length of sprouts, whereas the supplementation of -CA resulted in stunted sprouts. On the third day of supplementation with -CA (250 mg L), the increase in the total phenolic content (TPC) (80%), daidzein (152%), and genistin (158%) contents were observed, and further extending the supplementation reduced the growth of sprouts. On the seventh day of supplementation with Phe (500 mg L), the increase in TPC by 43% and genistin content by 74% was observed compared with non-treated sprouts; however, the total isoflavones content was found to be 1212 mg 100 g. The increased TPC was positively correlated with the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (r = 0.787) and ferric-reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) (r = 0.676) activity. This study suggests that chickpea sprouts enriched in TPC and antioxidants can be produced by the appropriate quantity of precursor supplementation on a particular day. The results indicated major changes in the phytochemical content, especially daidzein and genistin. It was also concluded that the consumption of 100 g of seventh-day sprouts provided eight times higher amounts of isoflavones in comparison to chickpea seeds.

Platelets play crucial roles in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) by regulating hemostasis and blood coagulation at sites of blood vessel damage. Accumulating evidence indicates daidzein inhibits platelet activation, but the mechanism involved has not been elucidated. Thus, in this study, we investigated the mechanism responsible for the inhibition of collagen-induced platelet aggregation by daidzein. We found that in collagen-induced platelets, daidzein suppressed the production of thromboxane A (TXA), a molecule involved in platelet activation and aggregation, by inhibiting the cytosolic phospholipase A (cPLA) signaling pathway. However, daidzein did not affect cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1). Furthermore, daidzein attenuated the PI3K/PDK1/Akt/GSK3αβ and MAPK (p38, ERK) signaling pathways, increased the phosphorylation of inositol trisphosphate receptor1 (IPR1) and vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP), and increased the level of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). These results suggest that daidzein inhibits granule release (ATP, serotonin, P-selectin), integrin αβ activation, and clot retraction. Taken together, our study demonstrates that daidzein inhibits collagen-induced platelet aggregation and suggests that daidzein has therapeutic potential for the treatment of platelet aggregation-related diseases such as atherosclerosis and thrombosis.

The application of spp., nitrogen-fixing plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, as biocontrol agents to enhance systemic disease resistance against plant viral infections is a promising approach towards achieving sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture. However, their potential as antivirals and biocontrol agents is less studied. Herein, the capability of bv. strain 33504-Mat209 was evaluated to promote plant growth and enhance faba bean systemic resistance against alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) infection. Under greenhouse conditions, the soil inoculation with 3504-Mat209 resulted in notable improvements in growth and an increase in chlorophyll content. This led to a marked decrease in the disease incidence, severity, and viral accumulation level by 48, 74, and 87%, respectively. The protective effect of 33504-Mat209 was linked to significant decreases in non-enzymatic oxidative stress indicators, specifically HO and MDA. Additionally, there were significant increases in the activity of reactive oxygen species scavenging enzymes, such as peroxidase (POX) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO), compared to the virus treatment. The elevated transcript levels of polyphenolic pathway genes (, , , and ) and pathogenesis-related protein-1 were also observed. Out of 18 detected compounds, HPLC analysis revealed that 33504-Mat209-treated plants increased the accumulation of several compounds, such as gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, catechin, pyrocatechol, daidzein, quercetin, and cinnamic acid. Therefore, the ability of 33504-Mat209 to promote plant growth and induce systemic resistance against AMV infection has implications for utilizing 33504-Mat209 as a fertilizer and biocontrol agent. This could potentially introduce a new strategy for safeguarding crops, promoting sustainability, and ensuring environmental safety in the agricultural sector. As far as we know, this is the first study of biological control of AMV mediated by spp. in faba bean plants.

Anti-, Antioxidant, Antidiabetic, and Anti-Alzheimer's Activities of Laurel Leaf Extract Treated by Moist Heat and Molecular Docking of Its Flavonoid Constituent, Naringenin, against Acetylcholinesterase and Butyrylcholinesterase.
It is worth noting that laurel ( L.) contains several pharmacologically and nutritionally active compounds that may differ according to the pretreatment process. The current study is designed to clarify the effect of moist heat on the phenolic and flavonoid constituents and anti-, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-Alzheimer's activities of laurel leaf extract (LLE). Unmoist-heated (UMH) and moist-heated (MH) LLEs showed the presence of numerous flavonoid and phenolic constituents, although at different levels of concentration. MH significantly induced ( < 0.05) the occurrence of most compounds at high concentrations of 5655.89 µg/mL, 3967.65 µg/mL, 224.80 µg/mL, 887.83 µg/mL, 2979.14 µg/mL, 203.02 µg/mL, 284.65 µg/mL, 1893.66 µg/mL, and 187.88 µg/mL, unlike the detection at low concentrations of 3461.19 µg/mL, 196.96 µg/mL, 664.12 µg/mL, 2835.09 µg/mL, 153.26 µg/mL, 254.43 µg/mL, 1605.00 µg/mL, 4486.02 µg/mL, and 195.60 µg/mL using UMH, for naringenin, methyl gallate, caffeic acid, rutin, ellagic acid, coumaric acid, vanillin, ferulic acid, and hesperetin, respectively. Chlorogenic acid, syringic acid, and daidzein were detected in the UMH LLE but not in the MH LLE, unlike pyrocatechol. The anti- activity of the UMH LLE was lower (23.67 ± 0.58 mm of inhibition zone) than that of the MH LLE (26.00 ± 0.0 mm of inhibition zone). Moreover, the values of MIC and MBC associated with the MH LLE were very low compared to those of the UMH LLE. Via MBC/MIC index calculation, the UMH and MH LLEs showed cidal activity. The MH LLE exhibited higher anti-biofilm activity (93.73%) compared to the anti-biofilm activity (87.75%) of the MH LLE against . The urease inhibition percentage was more affected in the UMH LLE compared to the MH LLE, with significant ( < 0.05) IC values of 34.17 µg/mL and 91.11 µg/mL, respectively. Promising antioxidant activity was documented with a very low value of IC (3.45 µg/mL) for the MH LLE compared to the IC value of 4.69 µg/mL for the UMH LLE and the IC value of 4.43 µg/mL for ascorbic acid. The MH LLE showed significantly higher ( < 0.05) inhibition of α-glucosidase and butyrylcholinesterase activities, with IC values of 9.9 µg/mL and 17.3 µg/mL, respectively, compared to those of the UMH LLE at 18.36 µg/mL and 28.92 µg/mL. The molecular docking of naringenin showed good docking scores against acetylcholinesterase 1E66 and butyrylcholinesterase 6EMI, indicating that naringenin is an intriguing candidate for additional research as a possible medication for Alzheimer's disease.

In recent times, there has been a growing consumer interest in replacing animal foods with alternative plant-based products. Starting from this assumption, for its functional properties, soymilk fermented with lactic acid bacteria is gaining an important position in the food industry. In the present study, soymilk was fermented with LP95 at 37 °C, without the use of stabilizers as well as thickeners and acidity regulators. We evaluated the antioxidant capacity of fermented soymilk along with its enrichment in aglycone isoflavones. The conversion of isoflavone glucosides to aglycones (genistein, glycitein, and daidzein) was analyzed together with antioxidant activity (ABTS) measurements, lipid peroxidation measurements obtained by a thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) assay, and apparent viscosity measurements. From these investigations, soymilk fermentation using LP95 as a starter significantly increased isoflavones' transformation to their aglycone forms. The content of daidzein, glycitein, and genistein increased after 24 h of fermentation, reaching levels of 48.45 ± 1.30, 5.10 ± 0.16, and 56.35 ± 1.02 μmol/100 g of dry weight, respectively. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity increased after 6 h with a reduction in MDA (malondialdehyde). The apparent viscosity was found to increase after 24 h of fermentation, while it slightly decreased, starting from 21 days of storage. Based on this evidence, LP95 appears to be a promising candidate as a starter for fermented soymilk production.
