This systematic review and meta-analysis addresses the effects of minimally invasive surgical techniques, specifically the Reverdin Isham osteotomy, on functional and radiological outcomes in patients with moderate Hallux Valgus, a common foot deformity. The review included randomized and non-randomized controlled trials, as well as case reports, assessing the osteotomy in adults with moderate to severe Hallux Valgus. Searches were conducted in electronic databases such as MEDLINE and Web of Science up until July 2023, and the Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tool was used to assess the risk of bias. Meta-analytical analyses employed a random-effects model with small-sample correction, presenting results as standardized mean differences and mean differences with 95% confidence intervals. Seven studies involving 554 patients and 643 operated feet were included, showing significant improvements in AOFAS scores (an average improvement of 36 points from 28.61 to 45.16) and reductions in radiological angles such as the distal metatarsal angle and hallux valgus angle post-surgery (IMA improved by - 3.07° from - 4.68 to - 1.46, DMAA by - 6.12° from - 9.52 to - 2.71, and HVangle by - 15.27° from - 17.98 to - 12.57). Despite these positive outcomes, most studies exhibited risks of bias and other methodological limitations, impacting the generalizability of the results. Overall, the findings highlight the efficacy of the Reverdin Isham osteotomy in improving both functional and radiological parameters in patients with moderate Hallux Valgus, although further research is warranted to solidify these results. No specific funding was received for this study, and the protocol was registered on PROSPERO with the number CRD-42023445886.

Asthma is a widespread airway disorder where GATA3-dependent Type-2 helper T (Th2) cells and group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) play vital roles. Asthma-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are enriched in a region located 926-970 kb downstream from GATA3 in the 10p14 (hG900). However, it is unknown how hG900 affects the pathogenesis of allergic airway inflammation. To investigate the roles of the asthma-associated GATA3 enhancer region in experimental allergic airway inflammation, we first examined the correlation between GATA3 expression and the activation of the hG900 region was analyzed by flow cytometry and ChIP-qPCR. We found that The activation of enhancers in the hG900 region was strongly correlated to the levels of GATA3 in human peripheral T cell subsets. We next generated mice lacking the mG900 region (mG900KO mice) were generated by the CRISPR-Cas9 system, and the development and function of helper T cells and ILCs in mG900KO mice were analyzed in steady-state conditions and allergic airway inflammation induced by papain or house dust mite (HDM). The deletion of the mG900 did not affect the development of lymphocytes in steady-state conditions or allergic airway inflammation induced by papain. However, mG900KO mice exhibited reduced allergic inflammation and Th2 differentiation in the HDM-induced allergic airway inflammation. The analysis of the chromatin conformation around by circular chromosome conformation capture coupled to high-throughput sequencing (4C-seq) revealed that the mG900 region interacted with the transcription start site of with an influencing chromatin conformation in Th2 cells. These findings indicate that the mG900 region plays a pivotal role in Th2 differentiation and thus enhances allergic airway inflammation.

The distal femur is one of the most common sites for primary bone tumors. As the tumor progresses and bone destruction worsens, it can severely affect knee function and even pose a threat to life. In cases where only one condyle is affected and requires resection, preserving the healthy contralateral condyle can substantially enhance the biomechanics of the knee. Furthermore, preserving bone stock may enable future salvage procedures in the event of initial surgery failure, be it from fractures or osteoarthritis. Distal femoral unicondyle resection can offer better functional outcomes in select cases. However, it is essential to prioritize oncological safety with adequate margins over short-term knee function. Currently, the primary methods for reconstruction after the excision of a unicondylar tumor include allograft transplantation (bi- or uni-condylar) and prosthetic or allograft-prosthesis composite replacement (APC). However, there is currently some controversy regarding the optimal surgical reconstruction method, and a consensus within the academic community has yet to be reached. Moreover, due to the rarity of bone tumors, extensive clinical data from a single center is limited. Current studies are mainly retrospective and single-center, lacking sufficient cases and follow-up duration. This article reviews surgical reconstruction after solitary condylar excision in distal femoral tumors. It summarizes, compares, and analyzes mainstream reconstruction methods, exploring their technical details and clinical outcomes to highlight their potential in bone oncology.

This study aimed to determine the effect of adding selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA HP) concerning alkalinizing potential. Additionally, it examined the set material after SeNPs incorporation using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (FE-SEM/EDX) for characterizing the elemental composition and morphological alterations resulting from the integration of SeNPs. Cement samples, both before and after SeNPs incorporation, were examined using FE-SEM/EDX. The pH level was also measured with a pH-meter previously calibrated with solutions of known pH, to evaluate the alkalinizing activity of the integrated substance at different concentrations of nanoparticles: Group 1 (control): 0% w/w SeNPs, Group 2: 0.5% w/w SeNPs, Group 3: 1% w/w SeNPs, Group 4: 1.5% w/w SeNPs and Group 5: 2% w/w SeNPs after 1, 7, 14, and 30 days in distal water. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (P≤0.05). According to FE-SEM/EDX, the morphological characteristics indicate that SeNPs were successfully dispersed and integrated into the MTA repair matrix. EDX examination validates the presence of Selenium, confirming successful integration. The findings confirmed that the MTAHP showed a high pH level with a discernible reduction in the alkalinizing activity with each incorporated concentration of (SeNPs) that significantly differed from the control group across various periods at (P≤ 0.05). Consequently, the findings indicate that the addition of SeNPs to MTA HP has a notable impact on the pH of the storage solution, leading to a significant decrease in pH values for all concentrations and periods when compared to the control group. The alkalinizing action of MTA HP is highly affected by the incorporated SeNPs, making it more suitable for application in pulpal tissue. This study contributes to our understanding of the morphological alterations and elemental composition of SeNP-incorporated MTA HP, enhancing its potential applications in dental and tissue regeneration.

Rehabilitation of edentulous atrophic mandibles involves the placement of implants in the anterior segment of the mandible. The primary stability of these implants can be improved using the base of the mandible as complementary anchorage (bicorticalization). This study aimed to analyze the biomechanics of atrophic mandibles rehabilitated with monocortical or bicortical implants. Two three-dimensional virtual models of edentulous mandibles with severe atrophy were prepared. Four monocortical implants were placed in one model (McMM), and four bicortical implants were placed in the other (BcMM). An implant-supported total prosthesis was prepared for each model. Then, a total axial load of 600 N was applied to the posterior teeth, and its effects on the models were analyzed using finite element analysis. The highest compressive stresses were concentrated in the cervical region of the implants in the McMM (-32.562 Mpa); in the BcMM, compressive stresses were distributed in the upper and lower cortex of the mandible, with increased compressive stresses at the distal implants (-63.792 Mpa). Thus, we conclude that axial loading forces are more uniformly distributed in the peri-implant bone when using monocortical implants and concentrated in the apical and cervical regions of the peri-implant bone when using bicortical implants.

A 13-year-old spayed female cocker spaniel was presented with a 2-month history of swelling in several digits and intermittent hindlimb lameness. Radiographs revealed marked soft-tissue swelling and periosteal new bone formation without cortical bone destruction, characteristic of hypertrophic osteopathy (HO), in the distal parts of all extremities except for the right forelimb. However, no notable findings were detected in thoracic radiographs. An ultrasonography indicated cranial bladder wall thickening, which resolved following antibiotic therapy. Computed tomographic angiography identified a potential underlying cause as an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) originating from the aortic arch, compressing the esophagus and causing mild esophageal cranial dilation to the aberrant vessel. No other intrathoracic or neoplastic lesions were observed. Gastrointestinal symptoms, such as regurgitation, were absent. Although an ARSA was likely the cause of HO, surgical correction was declined by the owner. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of HO concurrent with ARSA in dogs.

The sole known heme enzyme of the parasitic protist is a flavohemoglobin (gFlHb) that acts as a nitric oxide dioxygenase (NOD) and protects the organism from the free radical nitric oxide. To learn more about the properties of this enzyme, we measured its nitric oxide dioxygenase, NADH oxidase, and cytochrome reductase activities and compared these to the activities of the flavohemoglobin (Hmp). The turnover number for the NOD activity of gFlHb (23 s) is about two-thirds of that of Hmp (34 s) at pH 6.5 and 37 °C. The two enzymes differ in their sensitivity towards molecules that act as heme ligands. For both gFlHb and Hmp, inhibition with miconazole, a large imidazole ligand, is adequately described by simple competitive inhibition, with = 10 μM and 0.27 μM for gFlHb and Hmp, respectively. Inhibition plots with the small ligand imidazole were biphasic, which is consistent with previous experiments with carbon monoxide as a probe that show that the active site of flavohemoglobins exists in two conformations. Interestingly, the largest difference is observed with nitrite, which, like imidazole, also shows a biphasic inhibition plot; however, nitrite inhibits gFlHb at sub-millimolar concentrations while Hmp is not significantly affected. NADH oxidase activity measured under aerobic conditions in the absence of nitric oxide for Hmp was more than twice the activity of gFlHb. The addition of 1 mM hydrogen peroxide in these assays stimulated the NADH oxidase activity of gFlHb but not Hmp. Both enzymes had nearly identical cytochrome reductase activities but the extent of the contribution of indirect reduction by flavohemoglobin-generated superoxide was much lower with gFlHb (4% SOD-inhibited) than with Hmp (17% SOD-inhibited). Although the active sites of the two enzymes share the same highly conserved residues that are important for catalysis, differences in the distal ligand binding site may account for these differences in activity and sensitivity towards NOD inhibitors. The differences observed in the NADH oxidase and cytochrome reductase assays suggest that gFlHb may have evolved to protect the protist, which lacks both superoxide dismutase and catalase, from the damaging effects of superoxide by minimizing its production and from peroxide by actively reducing it.

INTRODUCTION
With the popularity of clear aligners, the sequential distalization protocol has been more commonly used for molar distalization. However, the amount of molar distalization that can be achieved, as well as the accompanying side effects on the sagittal dimension, are unclear.
METHODS
Registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023447211), relevant original studies were screened from seven databases (MEDLINE [PubMed], EBSCOhost, Web of Science, Elsevier [SCOPUS], Cochrane, LILACS [Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature], and Google Scholar) supplemented by a manual search of the references of the full-reading manuscripts by two investigators independently. A risk of bias assessment was conducted, relevant data were extracted, and meta-analysis was performed using RStudio.
RESULTS
After the screening, 13 articles (11 involving maxillary distalization, two involving mandibular distalization) met the inclusion criteria. All studies had a high or medium risk of bias. The meta-analysis revealed that the maxillary first molar (U6) mesiobuccal cusp was distalized 2.07 mm [1.38 mm, 2.77 mm] based on the post-distalization dental model superimposition, and the U6 crown was distalized 2.00 mm [0.77 mm, 3.24 mm] based on the post-treatment lateral cephalometric evaluation. However, the U6 mesiobuccal root showed less distalization of 1.13 mm [-1.34 mm, 3.60 mm], indicating crown distal tipping, which was validated by meta-analysis (U6-PP angle: 2.19° [1.06°, 3.33°]). In addition, intra-arch anchorage loss was observed at the post-distalization time point (U1 protrusion: 0.39 mm [0.27 mm, 0.51 mm]), which was corrected at the post-treatment time point (incisal edge-PTV distance: -1.50 mm [-2.61 mm, -0.39 mm]).
CONCLUSION
About 2 mm maxillary molar distalization can be achieved with the sequential distalization protocol, accompanied by slight molar crown distal tipping. Additional studies on this topic are needed due to the high risk of bias in currently available studies.

Esophageal cancer is a complex and challenging tumor to treat, with esophageal stenting being used as a palliative measure to improve the quality of life of patients. Self-expandable metal stents (SEMS), self-expandable plastic stents (SEPS), and biodegradable stents are the most commonly used types of stents. However, complications can arise, such as migration, bleeding, and perforation. To address issues of migration, this study developed a novel 3D printed bioinspired esophageal stent utilizing a highly flexible and ductile TPU material. The stent was designed to be self-expanding and tubular with flared ends to provide secure anchorage at both the proximal and distal ends of the structure. Suction cups were strategically placed around the shaft of the stent to prevent migration. The stent was evaluated through compression-recovery, self-expansion, and anti-migration tests to evaluate its recovery properties, self-expansion ability, and anchoring ability, respectively. The results indicated that the novel stent was able to recover its shape, expand, keep the esophagus open, and resist migration, demonstrating its potential for further research and clinical applications. Finite element analysis (FEA) was leveraged to analyze the stent's mechanical behavior, providing insights into its structural integrity, self-expansion capability, and resistance against migration. These results, supported by FEA, highlight the potential of this innovative stent for further research and its eventual application in preclinical settings.

The subgenual organ complex of stick insects has a unique neuroanatomical organisation with two elaborate chordotonal organs, the subgenual organ and the distal organ. These organs are present in all leg pairs and are already developed in newly hatched stick insects. The present study analyses for the first time the morphology of sensory organs in the subgenual organ complex for a membrane connecting the two sensory organs in newly hatched insects ( (Audinet-Serville 1838)). The stick insect legs were analysed following hatching by axonal tracing and light microscopy. The subgenual organ complex in first juvenile instars shows the sensory organs and a thin membrane connecting the sensory organs resembling the morphology of adult animals. Rarely was this membrane not detected, where it is assumed as not developed during embryogenesis. The connection appears to influence the shape of the subgenual organ, with one end extending towards the distal organ as under tension. These findings are discussed for the following functional implications: (1) the physiological responses of the subgenual organ complex to mechanical stimuli after hatching, (2) the influence of the membrane on the displacement of the sensory organs, and (3) the connection between the subgenual organ and distal organ as a possible functional coupling.
