INTRODUCTION
Various evaluation tools have been developed to track the growth of auditory-related behaviours of children with hearing loss during intervention. However, the reliability and validity of currently available outcome measures remain uncertain due to the lack of information on their psychometric properties. A lack of reliable outcome measures may jeopardise intervention quality and affect these children's listening skills progression. This scoping review aims to explore the mechanics of producing or developing an outcome measure either completely new or adapted from the original version that is considered as having robust statistical properties.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A scoping review was conducted across four databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Google Scholar). The included articles were written in English, published between January 2010 and June 2023, and specific to predefined keywords. Two independent reviewers screened and selected the final papers using the PRISMScR checklist. A code framework was created to extract information about the publications and conducted by one reviewer. The results were reported using descriptive statistics and narrative synthesis.
RESULTS
The final analysis were conducted on 22 articles out of 452 articles screened. The review identified seven outcome measures presented in various languages. The outcome measures found were the Auditory Behaviour in Everyday Life (ABEL), Functional Listening Index for Paediatric (FLI-P), Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS), Integrated Scales of Development (ISD), LittlEARS Auditory Questionnaire (LEAQ), Parent's Evaluation of Aural/Oral Performance in Children (PEACH), Parent's Evaluation of Aural/Oral Performance in Children Diary (PEACH Diary), Teachers' Evaluation of Aural/Oral Performance in Children (TEACH) and Parent's Evaluation of Aural/Oral Performance in Children Plus (PEACH+). A total of 13 studies focused on translating, adapting and validating an outcome measure while the remaining investigations validated either the translated or original version of the outcome measures. All original instruments were developed in English and among Western culture, except for the LEAQ which was designed in the German language and for the German population. The outcome measures identified were translated and adapted into Spanish, Turkish, Persian, Hebrew, Arabic, Malay, Yoruba, Polish, Swedish, Hindi, Portuguese, Kannada and Mandarin.
CONCLUSION
All studies performed an extensive evaluation of psychometric properties and feasibility studies to produce an excellent quality of auditory-related behaviour outcome measure for clinical use with the intended population. A new outcome measure, FLI-P, was found to be clinically useful for the primary provider of learning to listen and spoken language training for children with hearing impairment in Malaysia, i.e., the speech-language therapists.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common cause of congenital infection internationally, occurring in 0.67% of births, and increasingly recognised as a major public health burden due to the potential for long-term neurodevelopmental and hearing impairment. This burden includes estimates of 10% of childhood cerebral palsy and up to 25% of childhood deafness. In Sub-Saharan Africa, where CMV-seroprevalence is almost ubiquitous, prevalence of congenital CMV (cCMV) is higher than the global average, and yet there is a dearth of research and initiatives to improve recognition, diagnosis and treatment. This narrative review outlines the epidemiology and clinical presentation of cCMV, discusses issues of case identification and treatment in Sub-Saharan Africa, and recommends a framework of strategies to address these challenges. Considering the significant burden of cCMV disease in this setting, it is undoubtably time we embark upon improving diagnosis and care for these infants.

SIGNIFICANCE
Accurate spatial registration of probes (e.g., optodes and electrodes) for measurement of brain activity is a crucial aspect in many neuroimaging modalities. It may increase measurement precision and enable the transition from channel-based calculations to volumetric representations.
AIM
This technical note evaluates the efficacy of a commercially available infrared three-dimensional (3D) scanner under actual experimental (or clinical) conditions and provides guidelines for its use.
METHOD
We registered probe positions using an infrared 3D scanner and validated them against magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans on five volunteer participants.
RESULTS
Our analysis showed that with standard cap fixation, the average Euclidean distance of probe position among subjects could reach up to 43 mm, with an average distance of 15.25 mm [standard deviation (SD) = 8.0]. By contrast, the average distance between the infrared 3D scanner and the MRI-acquired positions was 5.69 mm (SD = 1.73), while the average difference between consecutive infrared 3D scans was 3.43 mm (SD = 1.62). The inter-optode distance, which was fixed at 30 mm, was measured as 29.28 mm (SD = 1.12) on the MRI and 29.43 mm (SD = 1.96) on infrared 3D scans. Our results demonstrate the high accuracy and reproducibility of the proposed spatial registration method, making it suitable for both functional near-infrared spectroscopy and electroencephalogram studies.
CONCLUSIONS
The 3D infrared scanning technique for spatial registration of probes provides economic efficiency, simplicity, practicality, repeatability, and high accuracy, with potential benefits for a range of neuroimaging applications. We provide practical guidance on anonymization, labeling, and post-processing of acquired scans.

AIM
The oxidative balance score (OBS), a composite score of dietary nutrients and lifestyles, reflects an individual's oxidative and antioxidant status. Evidence showed that oxidative stress levels were related to hearing loss. The relationship between OBS and hearing loss remains unclear. This study was to explore the association between OBS and hearing loss in adults.
METHODS
In this cross-sectional study, data of participants aged 20-69 years who received hearing tests were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database (2011-2012, 2015-2016). Hearing loss was defined as hearing threshold >25 dB in either ear. The OBS was composed of 16 dietary nutrients and 4 lifestyles. The covariates were screened using the backward stepwise regression analysis. The association of OBS and hearing loss was assessed with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroups of age, gender, occupational noise exposure, recreational noise exposure, firearm noise exposure, and veteran status were further evaluated the associations. The importance ranking of OBS components was analyzed by the weighted random forest model.
RESULTS
Of the total 3,557 adults, 338 (9.5%) suffered from hearing loss. High OBS levels were associated with lower odds of hearing loss (OR = 0.58, 95%CI: 0.41-0.82), after adjusting age, gender, race, hypertension, tinnitus, recreational noise exposure, and occupational noise exposure. Similar results were discovered in individuals aged50-59 years old (OR = 0.47, 95%CI: 0.24-0.93), aged 60-69 years old (OR = 0.31, 95%CI: 0.16-0.61), with female (OR = 0.44, 95%CI: 0.20-0.96), without occupational noise exposure (OR = 0.31, 95%CI: 0.16-0.62), recreational noise exposure (OR = 0.48, 95%CI: 0.30-0.76), firearm noise exposure (OR = 0.38, 95%CI: 0.19-0.77), and veteran status (OR = 0.57, 95%CI: 0.39-0.82). In OBS components, vitamin B12, total fat and physical activity were important for hearing loss.
CONCLUSION
Elevated OBS may be associated with hearing health in adults. Appropriate vitamin B12 supplementation, reduction of total fat intake, and increased physical activity may be beneficial to the prevention of hearing loss.

The realm of implantable bioelectronics represents a frontier in medical science, merging technology, biology, and medicine to innovate treatments that enhance, restore, or monitor physiological functions. This field has yielded devices like cochlear implants, cardiac pacemakers, deep brain stimulators, and vagus nerve stimulators, each designed to address a specific health condition, ranging from sensorineural hearing loss to chronic pain, neurological disorders, and heart rhythm irregularities. Such devices underscore the potential of bioelectronics to significantly improve patient outcomes and quality of life. Recent technological breakthroughs in materials science, nanotechnology, and microfabrication have enabled the development of more sophisticated, smaller, and biocompatible bioelectronic devices. However, the field also encounters challenges, particularly in extending the capabilities of devices such as retinal prostheses, which aim to restore vision but currently offer limited visual acuity. Research in implantable bioelectronics is highly timely, driven by an aging global population with a growing prevalence of chronic diseases that could benefit from these technologies. The convergence of societal health needs, advancing technological capabilities, and a supportive ecosystem for innovation marks this era as pivotal for bioelectronic research.

The purpose of this article is to review the scientific literature concerning speech in Parkinson's disease (PD) with reference to the DIVA/GODIVA neurocomputational modeling framework. Within this theoretical view, the basal ganglia (BG) contribute to several different aspects of speech motor learning and execution. First, the BG are posited to play a role in the initiation and scaling of speech movements. Within the DIVA/GODIVA framework, initiation and scaling are carried out by initiation map nodes in the supplementary motor area acting in concert with the BG. Reduced support of the initiation map from the BG in PD would result in reduced movement intensity as well as susceptibility to early termination of movement. A second proposed role concerns the learning of common speech sequences, such as phoneme sequences comprising words; this view receives support from the animal literature as well as studies identifying speech sequence learning deficits in PD. Third, the BG may play a role in the temporary buffering and sequencing of longer speech utterances such as phrases during conversational speech. Although the literature does not support a critical role for the BG in representing sequence order (since incorrectly ordered speech is not characteristic of PD), the BG are posited to contribute to the scaling of individual movements in the sequence, including increasing movement intensity for emphatic stress on key words. Therapeutic interventions for PD have inconsistent effects on speech. In contrast to dopaminergic treatments, which typically either leave speech unchanged or lead to minor improvements, deep brain stimulation (DBS) can degrade speech in some cases and improve it in others. However, cases of degradation may be due to unintended stimulation of efferent motor projections to the speech articulators. Findings of spared speech after bilateral pallidotomy appear to indicate that any role played by the BG in adult speech must be supplementary rather than mandatory, with the sequential order of well-learned sequences apparently represented elsewhere (e.g., in cortico-cortical projections).

Many lecturers develop voice problems, such as hoarseness. Nevertheless, research on how voice quality influences listeners' perception, comprehension, and retention of spoken language is limited to a small number of audio-only experiments. We aimed to address this gap by using audio-visual virtual reality (VR) to investigate the impact of a lecturer's hoarseness on university students' heard text recall, listening effort, and listening impression. Fifty participants were immersed in a virtual seminar room, where they engaged in a Dual-Task Paradigm. They listened to narratives presented by a virtual female professor, who spoke in either a typical or hoarse voice. Simultaneously, participants performed a secondary task. Results revealed significantly prolonged secondary-task response times with the hoarse voice compared to the typical voice, indicating increased listening effort. Subjectively, participants rated the hoarse voice as more annoying, effortful to listen to, and impeding for their cognitive performance. No effect of voice quality was found on heard text recall, suggesting that, while hoarseness may compromise certain aspects of spoken language processing, this might not necessarily result in reduced information retention. In summary, our findings underscore the importance of promoting vocal health among lecturers, which may contribute to enhanced listening conditions in learning spaces.

This study compared the impact of spectral and temporal degradation on vocoded speech recognition between early-blind and sighted subjects. The participants included 25 early-blind subjects (30.32 ± 4.88 years; male:female, 14:11) and 25 age- and sex-matched sighted subjects. Tests included monosyllable recognition in noise at various signal-to-noise ratios (-18 to -4 dB), matrix sentence-in-noise recognition, and vocoded speech recognition with different numbers of channels (4, 8, 16, and 32) and temporal envelope cutoff frequencies (50 vs 500 Hz). Cortical-evoked potentials (N2 and P3b) were measured in response to spectrally and temporally degraded stimuli. The early-blind subjects displayed superior monosyllable and sentence recognition than sighted subjects (all < 0.01). In the vocoded speech recognition test, a three-way repeated-measure analysis of variance (two groups × four channels × two cutoff frequencies) revealed significant main effects of group, channel, and cutoff frequency (all < 0.001). Early-blind subjects showed increased sensitivity to spectral degradation for speech recognition, evident in the significant interaction between group and channel ( = 0.007). N2 responses in early-blind subjects exhibited shorter latency and greater amplitude in the 8-channel ( = 0.022 and 0.034, respectively) and shorter latency in the 16-channel ( = 0.049) compared with sighted subjects. In conclusion, early-blind subjects demonstrated speech recognition advantages over sighted subjects, even in the presence of spectral and temporal degradation. Spectral degradation had a greater impact on speech recognition in early-blind subjects, while the effect of temporal degradation was similar in both groups.

BACKGROUND
Sarcopenia and intrinsic capacity (IC) declines pose significant challenges to healthy aging, particularly in the rapidly growing octogenarian population. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between sarcopenia and declines in IC across multiple cohorts of community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS
Data from four Taiwanese cohorts were analyzed. Sarcopenia was diagnosed based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 criteria (algorithm 1: categorized as either having possible sarcopenia or not (robust); algorithm 2: categorized as robust, possible sarcopenia or sarcopenia). IC was operationalized using the World Health Organization's Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) framework (step 1 and step 2), encompassing six domains: locomotion, vitality, vision, hearing, cognition, and psychological well-being. Multivariable logistic regression models were adopted to assess the association between sarcopenia and IC decline.
RESULTS
Among 599 octogenarians (median age 82.2 years, 54.8% male), the prevalence of possible sarcopenia (algorithm 1) was 64.6%. When adopting algorithm 2, the prevalence of possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia was 46,2% and 32.1%, respectively. After adjusting for covariates, participants with possible sarcopenia or sarcopenia (algorithm 2) were more likely to exhibit declines in vitality (ICOPE Step 1: possible sarcopenia aOR 3.65, sarcopenia aOR 4.74; ICOPE Step 2: possible sarcopenia aOR 5.11, sarcopenia aOR 14.77) and cognition (ICOPE Step 1: possible sarcopenia aOR 2.40, sarcopenia aOR 2.12; ICOPE Step 2: possible sarcopenia aOR 2.02, sarcopenia aOR 2.51) compared to robust individuals.
CONCLUSIONS
This study underscores the robust association between sarcopenia and declines in vitality and cognition among octogenarians, highlighting the importance of sarcopenia screening and management in promoting healthy longevity in this vulnerable population.

OBJECTIVES
Current evidence supports the benefits of cochlear implants (CIs) in children with hearing loss, including those with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD). However, there is limited evidence regarding factors that hold predictive value for intervention outcomes.
DESIGN
This retrospective case-control study consisted of 66 children with CIs, including 22 with ANSD and 44 with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) matched on sex, age, age at CI activation, and the length of follow-up with CIs (1:2 ratio). The case and control groups were compared in the results of five open-set speech perception tests, and a Forward Linear Regression Model was used to identify factors that can predict the post-CI outcomes.
RESULTS
There was no significant difference in average scores between the two groups across five outcome measures, ranging from 88.40% to 95.65%. The correlation matrix revealed that younger ages at hearing aid fitting and CI activation positively influenced improvements in speech perception test scores. Furthermore, among the variables incorporated in the regression model, the duration of follow-up with CIs, age at CI activation, and the utilization of two CIs demonstrated prognostic significance for improved post-CI speech perception outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS
Children with ANSD can achieve similar open-set speech perception outcomes as children with SNHL. A longer CI follow-up, a lower age at CI activation, and the use of two CIs are predictive for optimal CI outcome.
