Facial nerve aplasia is an exceptionally rare condition, with only a few reported cases in the existing medical literature. Congenital facial palsy (CFP) is characterized by the clinical manifestation of facial paralysis involving the seventh cranial nerve, either evident at birth or shortly thereafter. This condition is categorized based on various parameters, including the presence of trauma or developmental origins, unilateral or bilateral involvement, and whether the paralysis is complete or incomplete. While CFP is uncommon, its occurrence can pose multiple challenges for newborns, such as difficulties in nursing and incomplete closure of the affected eye. In cases where the paralysis persists, there is the potential for a long-term impact on the child's speech, emotional expressions, and mastication. Here we present the case of a six-month-old male child who experienced lower motor neuron palsy of the facial nerve on the left side since birth. This case contributes to the limited knowledge surrounding facial nerve aplasia and CFP, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and intervention to mitigate potential long-term complications.

Impact of clear aligner therapy on masticatory musculature and stomatognathic system: a systematic review conducted according to PRISMA guidelines and the Cochrane handbook for systematic reviews of interventions.
BACKGROUND
Clear aligner therapy has gained popularity as a minimally invasive orthodontic treatment option. However, its impact on the masticatory musculature and the stomatognathic system is an area of growing interest, as it involves the adjustment of occlusion and tooth movement. This systematic review aims to comprehensively assess and synthesise existing evidence regarding the influence of clear aligner therapy on the masticatory musculature and the stomatognathic system.
METHODS
An exhaustive search was performed on electronic databases that adhered to PRISMA guidelines. Clinical studies that evaluated the impact of patients receiving aligner orthodontic treatment on the muscles of the mastication and stomatognathic systems were included. A standardised data extraction form was devised for relevant variables. Two reviewers extracted the data variables. ROB-2 was used for bias evaluation in the selected studies.
RESULTS
A total of six studies met the inclusion criteria. The wearing of clear aligners significantly impacted the muscles of mastication. Muscle activity and discomfort showed a significant alteration in the initial days of appliance placement. but this observation was temporary, with no significant changes thereafter in subsequent follow-up. Bite force reduction was also noted. All the studies evaluated showed good methodological quality.
CONCLUSION
The review found that aligned orthodontic treatment may have a variable impact on muscles of mastication, with a potential for initial exacerbation of symptoms followed by possible improvement. However, due to the limited number of studies and their heterogeneous nature, further robust research is recommended to fully understand the relationship between aligned orthodontic treatment and masticatory muscles.

Total temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) surgery is the established treatment for severe temporomandibular joint disorders. While TMJR surgery is known to increase mouth-opening capacity, reduce pain and improve quality of life, little is known about post-surgical jaw function during activities of daily living such as biting and chewing. The aim of this study was to use subject-specific 3D bite force measurements to evaluate the magnitude and direction of joint loading in unilateral total TMJR patients and compare these data to those in healthy control subjects. An optoelectronic tracking system was used to measure jaw kinematics while biting a rubber sample for 5 unilateral total TMJR patients and 8 controls. Finite element simulations driven by the measured kinematics were employed to calculate the resultant bite force generated when compressing the rubber between teeth during biting tasks. Subject-specific musculoskeletal models were subsequently used to calculate muscle and TMJ loading. Unilateral total TMJR patients generated a bite force of 249.6 ± 24.4 N and 164.2 ± 62.3 N when biting on the contralateral and ipsilateral molars, respectively. In contrast, controls generated a bite force of 317.1 ± 206.6 N. Unilateral total TMJR patients biting on the contralateral molars had a significantly higher lateral TMJ force direction (median difference: 63.6°, p = 0.028) and a significantly lower ratio of working TMJ force to bite force (median difference: 0.17, p = 0.049) than controls. Results of this study may guide TMJ prosthesis design and evaluation of dental implants.

In addition to affecting oral functions such as temporomandibular joint function, mastication, and speech, malocclusion caused by skeletal maxillary prognathism also entails sociopsychological implications. Surgical orthodontic treatment to improve occlusion and oral function and to correct esthetic disharmony is important to improve patients' quality of life. We report the case of a 32-year-old woman who visited our hospital with a chief complaint of proclined upper front teeth. Clinical examination revealed maxillary overgrowth and severe labial inclination of the maxillary incisors with palatal gingival recession. The incisal protrusion was corrected with a maxillary anterior alveolar osteotomy-a surgical orthodontic method that could improve the overbite without causing excessive lingual inclination, while also minimizing orthodontic movement of the maxillary anterior teeth. This treatment is generally indicated in cases of maxillary prognathism with a relatively stable occlusal relationship in the molar region. As a result of the treatment, the patient's chief complaint improved and a long-term functional occlusion was achieved. This paper outlines the pre- and posttreatment skeletal and occlusal changes.

Masticatory function is associated with a variety of health outcomes. The aim of this systematic review is to clarify the predictive value of masticatory function for adverse health outcomes, such as frailty, sarcopenia and malnutrition, in older adults. An online literature search covered articles published in English or Dutch in three databases (PubMed, Embase and CINAHL, last searched November 4th 2022). Inclusion criteria were: an observational study design, focus on adults aged ≥65 years and evaluation of the association between masticatory function and health outcomes. Reviews and articles published before the year 2000 were excluded. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed using the Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Study population demographics, methods for assessing masticatory function, and the association between masticatory function and adverse health outcomes were extracted. From the 34 included studies, 5 studies had a prospective design, 2 had a retrospective design, and the other 27 studies had cross-sectional design. The majority of the studies were conducted in Japan (74%, n = 26). Twenty studies (59%) used one indicator for masticatory function, the other 41% used two (n = 9) or more (n = 5) indicators. Masticatory function was most frequently assessed with the maximum occlusal force (MOF) (79%, n = 27). The identified health outcomes were clustered into 6 categories: physical parameters and sarcopenia, history of falling, nutritional status, frailty, cognitive function and mortality. Despite the complex and multidimensional character of both masticatory function and most identified adverse health outcomes, some significant associations were reported. Prospective studies showed that reduced masticatory function in older adults is associated with incidence of frailty and frailty progression, cognitive decline and all-cause mortality. Regarding the other identified adverse health outcomes, i.e., physical measures and sarcopenia, history of falling and nutritional status, only cross-sectional studies were available and results were less concordant. As all prospective studies showed that reduced masticatory function in older adults is associated with adverse health outcomes, prevention of decline of masticatory function by adequate oral care may contribute to healthy ageing.

This study investigated the effects of chewing rate and food composition on aroma release and perception of composite foods. Bread or sponge cake paired with varying sugar content and viscosity strawberry jams, spiked with citral and limonene, were examined. In-nose release was characterized using Proton-Transfer-Reaction-Time-of-Flight-Mass-Spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS). Simultaneously, Time-Intensity (TI) profiling assessed citrus aroma perception ( = 8, triplicate) while fast and slow chewing protocols were applied (fast: 1.33 chews/s; slow 0.66 chews/s; each for 25 s). Chewing rate did not significantly impact the area under the curve and maximum intensity of citral and limonene release and citrus aroma perception. Faster chewing rates significantly decreased the time to reach maximum intensity of aroma release ( < 0.05) and citrus aroma perception ( < 0.001). Faster chewing rates probably accelerated structural breakdown, inducing an earlier aroma release and perception without affecting aroma intensity. Adding carriers to jams significantly ( < 0.05) increased aroma release, while perceived citrus aroma intensity significantly ( < 0.05) decreased regardless of chewing rate. In conclusion, chewing rate affects the temporality of aroma release and perception without affecting its intensity, and carrier addition increases aroma release while diminishing aroma perception.

An 8-y-old Pygora doe was presented to the University of California-Davis, Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital because of non-healing facial swelling of 2-wk duration. The lesion grew despite medical treatment, causing discomfort masticating, little-to-no airflow from the right nasal passage, and led to euthanasia. On gross examination, a large facial mass with a draining tract through the skin and hard palate was identified. On section, the mass was brown-pink, homogeneous, and friable. Abscess-like masses were identified in the lungs and kidney. Histopathology of the face, including oral and nasal cavities, salivary glands, and lymph nodes, as well as the lung and kidney lesions, revealed large areas of necrosis with numerous wide ribbon-like, mostly aseptate, fungal hyphae consistent with zygomycetes. PCR for fungal organisms performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue from the face identified (formerly ) of the order and an sp. The lesion was suspected to have started either as a fungal rhinitis or dental feed impaction, subsequently spreading to the face and systemically to the lungs and kidney. We describe here the lesions associated with facial mucormycosis in a goat and present a literature review of infection in veterinary species and fungal infections in goats.

BACKGROUND
The performance of an implant-supported prosthesis depends on the implant type, number, implant location, and prosthesis design which is directly associated with the distribution of the occlusal forces during mastication. The purpose of the present study is to analyze with three-dimensional (3D) finite element comparative analysis, the influence of implant location, number, and prosthesis design in the mandibular posterior region where multiple posterior teeth replacement is indicated, which in turn is associated with the longevity or Implant success rate.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Mandibular posterior section, where 4 teeth are missing, based on the space available for implants and following the surgical guide instructions, a standard make four implants (1st and 2nd premolars {3.8 mm × 11.5 mm}, 1st and 2nd molar {5.1 mm × 11.5 mm}) were selected and with standardization for placement, 4 groups were created with different implant location, number and prosthesis design from the selected implants as model FM, FM, FM, FM. Finite element analysis was carried out using ANSYS software, version 14.5 (ANSYS Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA) for assessment of stress, strain, and deformation around implant and bone.
RESULTS
Maximum von Mises stress on vertical loading was highest for FM (139.55MPa) model (center of prosthesis on premolar and molar pontics) and lowest for FM (53.65MPa) model (on 2nd premolar pontic) with values in decreasing order as FM ˃ FM ˃ FM ˃ FM. Maximum von Mises stress on oblique loading was highest at the distal of 1st molar implant pontic for FM (539.81MPa) and lowest at the 2nd premolar pontic for FM (352.48MPa) model with values as FM˃FM˃FM˃FM. Deformation for vertical and oblique loading was observed minimum at the buccal cusp and buccal crestal bone of 2nd premolar, 1st molar on FM model against highest deformation on buccal and lingual crestal bone, cuspal area of 2nd premolar, 1st molar implants. For oblique loading minimum deformation was seen for the 2nd premolar, 1st molar cuspal area in FMand maximum at the 2nd premolar region in FM.
CONCLUSION
Four single implants may be chosen if there is enough mesiodistal and buccolingual space to allow for a minimum inter-implant and inter-implant-tooth distance that can be maintained while putting the least amount of stress on the implants and bone. To reduce stress on the bone and implants, it is best to avoid long-span implant-supported prostheses when using fixed implant-supported prostheses.

Aquaporin-5 (AQP5) water channel, transmembrane protein 16A (TMEM16A) Ca-activated Cl channel, and Na-K-2Cl cotransporter (NKCC1) are membrane proteins on salivary gland acinar cells that function in watery saliva secretion. We examined their expression changes in rat parotid glands under reduced mastication. Rats were either fed regular chow as a control group, fasted for 48 hr or fed a liquid diet for 48 hr or 1 week to reduce mastication. The parotid glands were then resected to analyze the protein and mRNA levels by immunofluorescence, immunoblotting, and reverse-transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). AQP5 protein was significantly decreased in both liquid diet groups and the fasting group but its mRNA levels showed no apparent changes compared with the control group. The protein and mRNA levels of TMEM16A and NKCC1 showed no significant changes between any of the groups other than an increase in NKCC1 mRNA in the 1-week liquid diet group. These results suggest that reduced mastication may increase the AQP5 protein degradation, but not that of other membrane proteins necessary for saliva secretion.
