BACKGROUND
The choice of prosthetic socket interface material significantly affects user comfort and satisfaction. The Affordable Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Roll-On (AERO) liner was created with the aim of improving functionality and streamlining the wearing process for users.
OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this study was to comprehensively assess user satisfaction, comfort, and durability of the AERO liner and compare it with the common soft Pe-Lite liner.
METHODOLOGY
Fourteen individuals with transtibial amputation participated in this three-month randomized crossover trial study. The Prosthesis Evaluation Questionnaire (PEQ), Expanded Socket Comfort Score (ESCS), and liner thickness measurements were used to comprehensively compare the AERO and Pe-Lite liner.
FINDINGS
The AERO liner demonstrated notable improvements in prosthetic comfort and functionality over Pe-Lite liner. After three months use, there was a significant reduction in reported frustration with the AERO liner (p=0.023, r=0.604) in the PEQ subscale. Specific aspects, such as walking with the prosthesis (p=0.030, r=0.601) and odor perception (p=0.024, d=0.579), favored the use of the AERO liner. The expanded socket comfort score (ESCS) revealed significant superiority for the AERO liner "at best" (p=0.04) and "on average" (p=0.02) after one and three months, respectively. Liner thickness analysis showed significant reductions at the mid-patellar tendon location for the AERO liner at one (0.57±0.48) and three months (0.90±0.69, p=0.01) and in the posterior region after three months (0.63±0.64, p=0.05).
CONCLUSION
Our study highlights the potential advantages of the AERO liner in enhancing comfort and satisfaction. Yet, durability and thinning of the liner when compared to Pe-Lite may be a concern which may eventually affect socket fit. These findings contribute to ongoing efforts to optimize prosthetic interventions and improve the quality of life of individuals with lower limb prosthesis in resource-limited environments.

Olfactory dysfunctions decrease daily quality of life (QOL) in part by reducing the pleasure of eating. Olfaction plays an essential role in flavor sensation and palatability. The decreased QOL due to olfactory dysfunction is speculated to result from abnormal neural activities in the olfactory and limbic areas of the brain, as well as peripheral odorant receptor dysfunctions. However, the specific underlying neurobiological mechanisms remain unclear. As the olfactory tubercle (OT) is one of the brain's regions with high expression of endogenous opioids, we hypothesize that the mechanism underlying the decrease in QOL due to olfactory dysfunction involves the reduction of neural activity in the OT and subsequent endogenous opioid release in specialized subregions. In this review, we provide an overview and recent updates on the OT, the endogenous opioid system, and the pleasure systems in the brain and then discuss our hypothesis. To facilitate the effective treatment of olfactory dysfunctions and decreased QOL, elucidation of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the pleasure of eating through flavor sensation is crucial.

Since 2022, European specifications for organic pig farming have evolved to distribute 100 % organic feed and to reinforce the link to the soil with feed resources that should primarily be obtained from the farm or the same region. Feeding strategy acts as a lever to improve various quality dimensions of organic (as well as conventional) pork, including intrinsic dimensions (carcass composition, nutritional, organoleptic, technological, sanitary qualities) and extrinsic dimensions related to animal farming (image). Diet may also influence the risk of undesirable odours or flavours that may be found in pork from non-castrated male pigs. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of a specific feeding strategy on several quality dimensions of organic meat from non-castrated male pigs. The experiment was conducted with 77 organic non-castrated male pigs (Piétrain NN × Large White) reared according to organic specifications and distributed in two batches. Within litters, male littermates were allocated at around 33 kg of live weight to either a Control group which received a Control feed (C) corresponding to the organic specifications or in a Bio+ group which received an organic test feed based mainly on French raw materials and which contained more fibres (faba bean and access to forages) and omega-3 fatty acids (linseed, camelina). All pigs were reared in the same building on deep straw bedding (1.3 m/pig) with free outdoor access (1.0 m/pig) using one pen per experimental group. Pigs were fed ad libitum until slaughter at about 125 kg live weight. Average daily gain, carcass weight and lean meat content did not differ significantly between C and Bio+ pigs. Compared to C, Bio+ pigs had higher (P < 0.05) ultimate pH in the loin (Longissimus muscle) and ham (Gluteus medius, and Semimembranosus) muscles, associated with a lower Longissimus muscle glycolytic potential (P < 0.001). Loin and ham meat from Bio+ vs. C pigs was lighter (P < 0.05) and had a more intense red colour (P < 0.10). The Bio+ strategy led to a lower Longissimus muscle n-6:n-3 fatty acid ratio (P < 0.001), indicating an improvement in pork nutritional value. Backfat skatole concentration was lower in Bio+ than in C pigs whereas backfat androstenone was higher in Bio+ than in C pigs (P < 0.05). Altogether, we demonstrated that the Bio+ strategy had positive impacts on several qualities of organic pork from non-castrated male pigs.

This conceptual paper examines the use of odours and scents in books to enhance storytelling and engage readers. While books often possess a distinctive smell linked to their material production, the intentional use of scents in books is rare. Our study focuses on scratch-and-sniff books, examining their narrative purposes and contributions to young children's literature. We conduct a narrative historical review, supplemented by a systematic search of databases, online catalogues and lists, to identify a collection of these scented books. Through this review, we explore the extent to which these books represent a unique category of children's picture books, investigating how their features align with theoretical understandings of quality characteristics in children's literature and the role of olfactory cues in storytelling. We address why most scented books target younger readers and discuss possible reasons for the absence of scented books for an adult readership. This intriguing asymmetry contrasts the use of scent in other media (such as film, theatre or virtual reality), often directed toward adults. In addition, this review sheds light on the innovative use of scents in books and their impact on reader immersion and narrative experience. Finally, we consider possible future uses of scent in the context of digital books (ebooks).

BACKGROUND
Olfactory reference disorder (ORD) is a mental illness in which individuals overestimate their sense of smell and worry about the negative impact of odors. Little is known about its successful treatment. A new cognitive behavioral model was developed based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for obsessive-compulsive disorder. Using this model, this study reports a successful treatment process of a 53-year-old female with ORD.
CASE PRESENTATION
The patient's initial diagnosis was schizophrenia, and improvements were observed, such as the disappearance of persecutory delusions, through medication therapy. During this treatment process, it became clear that the patient's preoccupation with her own offensive body odor was not a hallucination or delusion caused by schizophrenia but rather a symptom of ORD. Within a limited 4-week hospitalization period, high-intensity CBT was provided by a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist. Multiple CBT techniques were employed, including case formulation to identify her beliefs, reviewing safety-seeking behaviors, attention shift training, behavioral experiments, public opinion polls, mindfulness meditation, and exposure and response prevention.
CONCLUSION
Following a seven-sessions intensive intervention over 3 weeks, her symptoms of ORD, anxiety, and depression reduced. High-frequency CBT practices could be beneficial in treatment of patients with severe ORD, addressing severe ORD cases, facilitating rapid improvement in both ORD symptoms and functioning.

Compared to traditional methods, using machine learning to assess or predict the odor of molecules can save costs in various aspects. Our research aims to collect molecules with coffee odor and summarize the regularity of these molecules, ultimately creating a binary classifier that can determine whether a molecule has a coffee odor. In this study, a total of 371 coffee-odor molecules and 9,700 non-coffee-odor molecules were collected. The Knowledge-guided Pre-training of Graph Transformer (KPGT), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), and message-passing neural networks (MPNN) were used to train the data. The model with the best performance was selected as the basis of the predictor. The prediction accuracy value of the KPGT model exceeded 0.84 and the predictor has been deployed as a webserver PredCoffee.

In the 1960s and 1970s, there was widespread discussion in Japan about the pathological experience of "unpleasant odors emanating from one's body." This symptom is called "Jikoshu," and this term was used in combination with various words, such as "Genkaku" (hallucination) and "Moso" (delusion), reflecting its symptomatological ambiguity. The best-known term in the English-language literature is ( phobia). By further abstracting this symptom and viewing it as a delusion-like experience of "something leaking out of me," egorrhea syndrome (Fujinawa) was proposed, which was considered to be partly a pathology of schizophrenia. Similar cases were characteristically observed during adolescence, and a study emerged suggesting that the syndrome was "adolescent paranoia" (Murakami), distinct from schizophrenia. However, the terms "Jikoshu-Taiken" ( experience; Kasahara et al.) and "Jikoshu-Sho" ( syndrome; Miyamoto) were proposed to emphasize the nosological ambiguity. Considered a culture-bound syndrome unique to Japan or East Asia, received little attention in the English-language literature apart from a 1971 study of olfactory reference syndrome (Pryse-Phillips), which presents with similar symptoms. In recent years, research has placed this disorder within the obsessive-compulsive spectrum, and it has been adopted as an ICD-11 disorder under the term "olfactory reference disorder."

Learning an olfactory discrimination task leads to heterogeneous results in honeybees with some bees performing very well and others at low rates. Here we investigated this behavioral heterogeneity and asked whether it was associated with particular gene expression patterns in the bee's brain. Bees were individually conditioned using a sequential conditioning protocol involving several phases of olfactory learning and retention tests. A cumulative score was used to differentiate the tested bees into high and low performers. The rate of CS+ odor learning was found to correlate most strongly with a cumulative performance score extracted from all learning and retention tests. Microarray analysis of gene expression in the mushroom body area of the brains of these bees identified a number of differentially expressed genes between high and low performers. These genes are associated with diverse biological functions, such as neurotransmission, memory formation, cargo trafficking and development.

OBJECTIVES
Olfactory training (OT) has emerged as a first-line therapeutic approach to the management of olfactory dysfunction. Conventional OT (COT) involves the systematic home-based exposure to four distinct odors. Previous research has demonstrated that immersive OT (IOT) involving full-body exposure to dozens of distinct odors could also improve overall olfactory function. This study compared IOT and COT in terms of efficacy.
METHODS
A total of 60 patients were enrolled and assigned to three groups. The IOT group ( = 25) underwent immersive exposure to 64 odors once daily in a specialized theater. COT participants ( = 17) sniffed four typical odors in a set of four jars twice daily at home. A control group ( = 18) underwent passive observation. Olfactory function was assessed before and after training.
RESULTS
Significant improvements in composite threshold-discrimination-identification (TDI) scores were observed after training in both the IOT (mean difference = 2.5 ± 1.1. = .030) and COT (mean difference = 4.2 ± 1.3, = .002) groups. No changes were observed in the control group. A significantly higher proportion of patients in the COT group (41%) presented improvements of clinical importance (TDI ≥5.5) compared to the controls ( = .018). The improvements attained in the IOT group (20%) were less pronounced ( = .38).
CONCLUSION
While IOT did not exhibit the same efficacy as COT in restoring olfactory function, it still demonstrated promising outcomes. Future efforts to advance olfactory recovery should focus on cross-modal integration.

BACKGROUND
The field of bee genomics has considerably advanced in recent years, however, the most diverse group of honey producers on the planet, the stingless bees, are still largely neglected. In fact, only eleven of the ~ 600 described stingless bee species have been sequenced, and only three using a long-read (LR) sequencing technology. Here, we sequenced the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes of the most common, widespread and broadly reared stingless bee in Brazil and other neotropical countries-Tetragonisca angustula (popularly known in Brazil as jataí).
RESULTS
A total of 48.01 Gb of DNA data were generated, including 2.31 Gb of Pacific Bioscience HiFi reads and 45.70 Gb of Illumina short reads (SRs). Our preferred assembly comprised 683 contigs encompassing 284.49 Mb, 62.84 Mb of which (22.09%) corresponded to 445,793 repetitive elements. N50, L50 and complete BUSCOs reached 1.02 Mb, 91 contigs and 97.1%, respectively. We predicted that the genome of T. angustula comprises 17,459 protein-coding genes and 4,108 non-coding RNAs. The mitogenome consisted of 17,410 bp, and all 37 genes were found to be on the positive strand, an unusual feature among bees. A phylogenomic analysis of 26 hymenopteran species revealed that six odorant receptor orthogroups of T. angustula were found to be experiencing rapid evolution, four of them undergoing significant contractions.
CONCLUSIONS
Here, we provided the first nuclear and mitochondrial genome assemblies for the ecologically and economically important T. angustula, the fourth stingless bee species to be sequenced with LR technology thus far. We demonstrated that even relatively small amounts of LR data in combination with sufficient SR data can yield high-quality genome assemblies for bees.
