Direct or indirect interactions between sympatric wildlife and poultry can lead to interspecies disease transmission. Particularly, avian influenza (AI) is a viral epidemic disease for which the poultry-wild bird interface shapes the risks of new viral introductions into poultry holdings. Given this background, the study hereby presented aimed to identify wild bird species in poultry house surroundings and characterize the spatiotemporal patterns of these visits. Eight camera traps were deployed for a year (January to December 2021) in 3 commercial chicken layer farms, including free-range and barn-type setups, located in a densely populated poultry area in Northern Italy at high risk for AI introduction via wild birds. Camera traps' positions were chosen based on wildlife signs identified during preliminary visits to the establishments studied. Various methods, including time series analysis, correspondence analysis, and generalized linear models, were employed to analyze the daily wild bird visits. A total of 1,958 camera trap days yielded 5,978 videos of wild birds from 27 different species and 16 taxonomic families. The animals were predominantly engaged in foraging activities nearby poultry houses. Eurasian magpies (Pica pica), ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus), and Eurasian collared doves (Streptopelia decaocto) were the most frequent visitors. Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), an AI reservoir species, were observed only in a farm located next to a fishing sport lake. Time series analysis indicated that wild bird visits increased during spring and winter. Farm and camera trap location also influenced visit frequencies. Overall, the results highlighted specific species that could be prioritized for future AI epidemiological surveys. However, further research is required to assess their susceptibility and infectivity to currently circulating AI viruses, essential for identifying novel bridge hosts.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE
Syringomyelia, or the formation of fluid-filled cysts within the spinal cord, associated with delayed spinal arachnoiditis is an uncommon complication of aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage. To date, about 18 cases have been reported in medical literature, with just two reported in patients under the age of 35 years.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION
A 27-year-old female patient complained of sudden, severe headaches in the occipital region, nuchal rigidity, and drowsiness when she presented at our institution. A head computed tomography scan revealed intraventricular bleeding in the lateral and fourth ventricles with more extensive haemorrhaging in the frontal horns. A left posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysm was confirmed via digital subtraction angiogram, and endovascular embolization was done. Two years later, the patient reported intense pain in the lower back along with symptoms suggestive of spinal cord compression. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed spinal adhesions from C1 to L4, syringomyelia with some vasogenic oedema extending from T3 to T9 level, and a cyst in the lumbar region. Consequently, a right hemilaminectomy was performed along with microsurgical release of arachnoid adhesions and placement of a subdural drain. Radiological and symptomatic improvements were observed. Since then, the patient's clinical condition has remained stable during the past three years of follow-up visits.
CONCLUSIONS
Literature on optimal treatment modalities and patient prognosis is scarce and debated. The time for symptom improvement depends on the level and extent of spinal cord involvement. Rehabilitation may be required for most patients, as complete symptomatic recovery may not be attainable.

Pica, in the form of ingestion of various non-food items like clay, chalks, etc., is commonly reported in Indian settings, but its other variant, pagophagia (ice eating), gets attention rarely. This case series is about three female patients who presented in psychiatry outpatient clinics with various mental health issues and ice eating habits. A diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia was common among all three cases, and they were managed with oral iron supplementation along with appropriate psychiatric treatments. Pagophagia is an important clinical presentation to be looked for in the changing Indian society.

In this study, we investigated the effects of PVC microplastics (PVC-MPs) using two different animal models: the brittle star Ophiactis virens, and the African clawed frog Xenopus laevis. This is the first study using an environmental relevant sample of PVC-MPs obtained through mechanical fragmentation of a common PVC plumbing pipe. Exposure experiments on brittle star were performed on the adult stage for a duration of 14 days, while those on African clawed frog were performed on the embryogenic developmental stage according to the standardized FETAX protocol (Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus). For both models, different endpoints were analysed: mortality, developmental parameters, behavioural assays and histological analyses on target organs by optical and electronic microscopy. Results showed that the concentration of 0.1 μg mL PVC do not cause any adverse effects in both models (common NOEC concentration), while exposure to 1 μg mL PVC adversely affected at least one species (common LOEC concentration). In particular arm regeneration efficiency was the most affected parameters in O. virens leading to a significantly lower differentiation pattern at 1 μg mL PVC. On the contrary, in X. laevis larvae histopathological analyses and behavioural tests were the most susceptible endpoints, exhibiting several abnormal figures and different swimming speed at 10 μg mL PVC. Histopathological analyses revealed a higher abundance of degenerating cells, pyknotic nuclei and cellular debris in the gut of exposed larvae in respect to control. The comparative analyses performed in this work allowed to characterize the specificity of action of the PVC-MPs on the two species, underlining the importance of exploring a large spectrum of endpoints to offer adequate protection in the emerging fields of microplastic research.

The natural transmission cycle of West Nile virus (WNV) involves birds as primary hosts and mosquitoes as vectors, but this virus can spread to mammals, human beings included. Asymptomatic infected donors pose a risk to the safety of blood transfusions and organ transplants, as WNV can be transmitted through these medical procedures. Since 2009, the region of Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy has been implementing an integrated surveillance system in order to detect WNV circulation in the environment at an early stage. Here we report the results of the two components of the surveillance system, the active testing of corvids and humans, and demonstrate that bird surveillance alone improves a surveillance system based solely on human case detection. As WNV risk reduction measures are applied on a provincial basis, we assessed the ability of this surveillance system component to detect virus circulation prior to the notification of the first human case for each province. Overall, 99 epidemic seasons were evaluated as a result of 11 years (2013-2023) of surveillance in the nine provinces of the region. In this period, 22,314 corvids were tested for WNV and 642 (2.9%) were found to be infected. WNV was generally first detected in birds in July, with sample prevalence peaks occurring between August and September. During the same period, 469 autochthonous human cases were notified, about 60% of which were reported in August. WNV was detected 79 times out of the 99 seasons considered. The virus was notified in birds 73 times (92.4%) and 60 times (75.9%) in humans. WNV was first or only notified in birds in 57 seasons (72.1%), while it was first or only notified in humans in 22 seasons (27.8%). Active surveillance in corvids generally allows the detection of WNV before the onset of human cases. Failure of virus detection occurred mainly in seasons where the number of birds tested was low. Our results show that active testing of a minimum of 3.8 corvids per 100 km provides a satisfactory timeliness in the virus detection, but for early detection of WNV it is crucial to test birds between mid-June and mid-August.

Anatomic variations of intracranial arteries are of paramount importance in neurosurgery and interventional radiology. Three extremely rare arterial variants were found by observing the intracranial vascular anatomy on the magnetic resonance angiography files of a 56-year-old female patient. Firstly, on the left side of the vertebrobasilar axis, a persistent primitive lateral basilovertebral anastomosis was found uniting the left anterior inferior and posterior inferior cerebellar arteries; further, the left anterior inferior cerebellar artery looped above the nerves of the internal auditory canal. Secondly, the right posterior inferior cerebellar artery was shown to be leaving the vertebral artery and had a distal fenestration of the telovelotonsillar segment. Such cases of distal fenestrated posterior inferior cerebellar artery are rare. Thirdly, a partly duplicated anterior communicating artery was also found in the anterior circulation. In conclusion, magnetic resonance angiography helps distinguish and detail discrete and delicate rare arterial variants.

Successful Internal Trapping of Vertebral Artery Dissecting Aneurysm Located between Double Origin of the Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery, Resulting in Antegrade Blood Flow: A Case Report.
OBJECTIVE
The double origin of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (DOPICA) is a rare variant of PICA. Vertebral artery dissecting aneurysm (VADA) with DOPICA is an extremely rare occurrence. Herein, we report a case of VADA located between DOPICA that was successfully treated with endovascular internal trapping.
CASE PRESENTATION
A 48-year-old male, found collapsed at his workplace, was admitted to our hospital for emergency medical assistance. Head CT revealed a subarachnoid hemorrhage (Fisher group 3), and cerebral angiography revealed right VADA with DOPICA. The VADA was located distal to the proximal component of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PCPICA) and just proximal to the hypoplastic distal component of PICA (DCPICA). Emergency endovascular internal trapping was performed using a total of 13 coils from the distal end of the VADA to just the distal of the branching point of PCPICA. VADA was not visualized, and antegrade flow through DOPICA to the basilar artery was confirmed. Head magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) showed antegrade flow via DOPICA, and the patient was discharged home on Day 46 with a modified Rankin Scale 0.
CONCLUSION
Endovascular internal trapping for VADA with DOPICA was considered useful, especially when VADA is distal to PCPICA and proximal to DCPICA.

PURPOSE
It is currently unclear how useful repeat computed tomography angiography (CTA) is in spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) patients after negative initial digital subtraction angiography (DSA). The purpose of this study is to assess the yield of repeat CTA for the detection of causative vascular lesions in patients with SAH in whom there has been a negative initial DSA.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
This observational retrospective study was carried out from January 2013 to July 2022 at a single institution. Analysis of the SAH pattern on unenhanced CT showed that patients were divided into perimesencephalic SAH and diffuse SAH groups. A repeat CTA was performed on all spontaneous SAH patients who had a nega-tive initial CTA and DSA within a 2-week period. An interventional neuroradiologist and a diagnostic radiologist examined all images to search for causative vascular abnormalities.
RESULTS
Forty-seven patients were included in our study, with a median age of 55 years and a range of 28-81 years. Thirty-seven had diffuse SAH (66%), and 16 had perimesencephalic SAH (34%). The repeat CTA revealed 2 causa-tive vascular lesions (a right PICA aneurysm and a mycotic aneurysm) in 2 separate patients (yield of 4.3%), both of whom had diffuse SAH (yield of 6.5%). In retrospect, none of these vascular lesions were evident in the initial CTA and DSA. No evidence of re-bleeding was observed in the follow-up period.
CONCLUSIONS
It is beneficial to repeat CTA when evaluating patients with diffuse SAH who initially present with nega-tive initial DSA. For occult aneurysms, the diagnostic yield of the follow-up CTA is 6.5%.

Geophagy or Pica is the unintentional traditional behavior of eating soil by indigenous people in different countries. practiced in many countries due to nausea among pregnant women and mineral deficiencies without knowing the associated health risks. In this study the mineral composition of geophagic soil and its associated health risk among consumers was determined. Dry soil sticks consumed by women were obtained from open markets in Morogoro, Njombe and Mwanza regions in Tanzania. The elemental concentration of geophagic soil was analyzed using Flame Atomic Absorption spectrophotometer. Health risk assessment methods were used to obtain health information after chronic exposure to geophagic soils. The tests used were Target Hazard Quotients (THQ), Total Target Hazard Quotients (TTHQ) and Cancer Risks (CR). The concentration range of metals in samples obtained from three different regions were 16,335.7-47,773.7 mg/kg for Fe, 46.2-1073.5 mg/kg for Ca, 155.3-514.9 mg/kg for K, 44.5-112.4 mg/kg for Zn, 40.7-95.1 mg/kg for Na, 2.4-66.7 mg/kg for Cu, 109.5-572.6 mg/kg for Mn, 3.8-6.85 mg/kg for Pb, 3.1-93 mg/kg for Ni, 62.7-638.6 mg/kg for Cr and 0.4 mg/kg for Cd. The Provisional Daily Intake (PDI), THQ, TTHQ and CR ranged between 3.0 × 10 -34.12 mg/kg/day bw, 0.043-48.75, 34.52-77.36 and 2.55×10- 0.23 respectively. The TTHQ>1 was evident for metals in all sampling sites which is indicative of non-carcinogenic health effects. Prolonged exposure to Pb at low concentrations in samples from all the sites can cause pathological effects. The cancer risk values for Pb, Ni, Cr and Cd were <1 in which the consumer is likely not to develop cancer in a life time. Essential minerals - Fe, Ca, Zn, Na, K and toxic metals Pb, Cr, Ni and Cu were detected in all the samples. Cd occurred only in samples from Mwanza region that was below the tolerable daily intake. According to WHO/FAO expert's joint committee any amount of Pb consumption is not permitted. Given the presence of essential minerals in the geophagic soils which are however accompanied by toxic minerals in some cases which might have carcinogenic effects, prolonged consumption should be discouraged to avoid risks of serious adverse effects to the health of the general population.

Vertebral artery dissections (VAD) pose a significant risk for strokes, particularly in young adults. This case report details the presentation and management of a 48-year-old patient who was diagnosed with an extracranial VAD following cervical spine manipulation (CSM). The patient's symptoms included acute right-sided ataxia, giddiness, vertigo, nausea, vomiting, and persistent pain behind the right ear, prompting immediate evaluation. After ruling out acute intracerebral hemorrhages, a computed tomography angiogram (CTA) of the head and neck identified a severe narrowing of the right distal vertebral artery with a string sign at the level of the right C1 loop (V3 segment), indicating an extracranial VAD. This finding was further supported when ultrasound (US) imaging revealed a high resistance flow pattern in the right distal vertebral artery. Furthermore, T2 and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed a 1.8 cm VAD/hematoma and a 1.4 cm acute/subacute infarct in the right posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) territory. This research accentuates the importance of recognizing and addressing that neck pain can be a symptom of musculoskeletal dysfunction or could have neurovascular origins. In this case, the patient's neck pain may have been musculoskeletal or could have been due to a previous dissection. Thus, differentiation should be considered before cervical spine manipulation.
