Postpartum depressive symptoms constitute a common yet serious complication of pregnancy and childbirth, but research on its association with coparenting is scarce. Furthermore, although coparenting dynamics start forming prior to the child's birth, no research has explored dyadic prenatal coparenting dynamics as a predictor of postpartum depressive symptoms. The current study assessed how dyadic prenatal coparenting behaviors predicted postpartum depressive symptoms in first-time parents. We conducted a dyadic mixed-method longitudinal study of 107 expectant couples with data collected prenatally, and at 3, 6, and 24 months post-birth. The results indicated that prenatal coparenting dyadic synchrony predicted low levels of depressive symptoms among first-time fathers 3 and 6 months after the birth, and a prenatal coparenting dynamic of dyadic negative escalation predicted high levels of depressive symptoms among first-time mothers at 3 and 24 months postpartum. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Review
Congenital hearing loss is a significant global health concern that affects millions of newborns and infants worldwide, posing substantial challenges for affected individuals, their families, and healthcare systems. This condition, present at birth, can stem from genetic factors, in utero exposures, infections, or complications during pregnancy or childbirth. The spectrum of congenital hearing loss ranges from mild to profound, impacting the development of speech, language, and cognitive skills, thereby influencing educational achievements, social integration, and future employment opportunities. Early detection and intervention strategies, such as newborn hearing screenings, genetic counseling, and the use of hearing aids or cochlear implants, are crucial for mitigating these impacts. This review article aims to explore the diagnostic approaches and management strategies for congenital cytomegalovirus-related hearing loss, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary care and the potential for technological advances to improve outcomes for affected individuals.

Observational Study
Ovarian transposition (OT) has been proposed as a protective measure against radiation-induced damage to ovarian function and fertility. Despite its historical use, limited research has focused on evaluating endocrine and exocrine ovarian function after OT performed in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) before or during puberty. The purpose of our study was to investigate the fertility, pubertal development, and ovarian function of women with a previous history of OT during childhood, adolescence or young adulthood. In an observational bicentric retrospective study, we included 32 young female cancer patients who underwent OT before the age of 26 between 1990 and 2015 at Lyon Léon Bérard Cancer Center or Nancy University Hospital. The mean age at the time of OT was 15.6 years with a cancer diagnosis at 15 ± 4.8 years. Among the 10 women attempting pregnancy post-treatment, 60% achieved successful pregnancies. After a mean follow-up of 9.6 ± 7 years, 74% (17 out of 23) of women recovered spontaneous menstrual cycles (seven out of eight evaluable women with OT before or during puberty). Notably, 35% of women who did not attempt pregnancy demonstrated adequate ovarian reserve. Ovarian reserve and function recovery were influenced by the specific chemotherapy received. Importantly, our findings suggest that OT's effectiveness on ovarian activity resumption does not significantly differ when performed before or during puberty compared to pubertal stages. This study contributes valuable insights into the long-term reproductive outcomes of young women undergoing OT, emphasizing its potential efficacy in preserving ovarian function and fertility across different developmental stages.

Exposure to cigarette smoke is known to induce disease during pregnancy. Recent evidence showed that exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) negatively impacts fetal and placental weights, leading to the development of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Electronic cigarettes (eCigs) represent a phenomenon that has recently emerged, and their use is also steadily rising. Even so, the effects of SHS or eCigs during gestation remain limited. In the present study, we wanted to characterize the effects of SHS or eCig exposure at two different important gestational points during mouse pregnancy. C57/Bl6 mice were exposed to SHS or eCigs via a nose-only delivery system for 4 days (from 14.5 to 17.5 gestational days (dGA) or for 6 days (from 12.5 dGA to 17.5 dGA)). At the time of necropsy (18.5 dGA), placental and fetal weights were recorded, maternal blood pressure was determined, and a dipstick test to measure proteinuria was performed. Placental tissues were collected, and inflammatory molecules in the placenta were identified. Treatment with SHS showed the following: (1) a significant decrease in placental and fetal weights following four days of exposure, (2) higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure following six days of exposure, and (3) increased proteinuria after six days of exposure. Treatment with eCigs showed the following: (1) a significant decrease in placental weight and fetal weight following four or six days of exposure, (2) higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure following six days of exposure, and (3) increased proteinuria after six days of exposure. We also observed different inflammatory markers associated with the development of IUGR or PE. We conclude that the detrimental effects of SHS or eCig treatment coincide with the length of maternal exposure. These results could be beneficial in understanding the long-term effects of SHS or eCig exposure in the development of placental diseases.

Comparative Study
BACKGROUND
Maternal antenatal depression affects 21-28% of expectants globally and negatively impacts both maternal and child health in the short and long term.
OBJECTIVE
To compare the psychometric properties and clinical utility of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) in pregnant individuals.
METHODS
In this cross-sectional study, 953 third-trimester pregnant Italian individuals completed both the EPDS and the PHQ-9.
RESULTS
Both scales demonstrated good internal consistency (EPDS ω=0.83, PHQ-9 ω=0.80) and a moderate correlation between their scores (r=0.59). Concordance at recommended cut-off points (≥14 for both) was moderate (k=0.55). Factor analyses indicated a bifactor solution for the EPDS (dimensions: "depression" and "anxiety") and for the PHQ-9 (dimensions: "depression", "pregnancy symptoms", "somatic"). Benchmarks for clinical change were also established.
CONCLUSIONS
The EPDS and PHQ-9 capture distinct aspects of perinatal depressive symptomatology. Clinically, these findings recommend using both scales in obstetric and gynaecologic settings to minimize false positives and negatives.

Meta-Analysis Comparative Study
Acute appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency in pregnant women. There has been a wide variance in clinical practice worldwide, with some favoring an antibiotic-only approach while others prefer surgery as the first-line management. Therefore, we designed the current analysis to synthesize the available evidence on the efficacy and safety of antibiotics versus surgery management. We searched PubMed, Scopus, EuropePMC, and Cochrane Central from March 4, 1904 until November 25, 2022, to look for studies comparing antibiotics and surgery in pregnant patients with acute appendicitis. We only included studies that provided a comparison between the two treatments. We included preterm delivery, fetal loss, maternal death, and complications as outcomes. The results were compared using an odds ratio and 95% confidence interval. We also performed a sensitivity analysis by excluding studies with a serious risk of bias. We included five non-randomized studies for the analysis. We found that patients in the antibiotic group had a lower risk of preterm labor (OR 0.63 [95% CI 0.43-0.92]; p 0.02) but a higher risk of complications (OR 1.79 [95% CI 1.19-2.69]; p 0.005). We did not find any difference in the other outcomes. The increased risk of complications should caution clinicians about using antibiotics as the first-line management. More studies are required to identify patients who would benefit the most before antibiotics could be adopted as a treatment for acute appendicitis in pregnant patients.

The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) polymorphism is associated with preeclampsia since its abnormal expression plays an important role in vasculogenesis in placenta formation. Thus, this study is aimed at analyzing the association between VEGF +936C/T polymorphism and the risk of preeclampsia. To assess the causal relationship, a hospital-based cross-sectional analytical study was carried out among 204 Myanmar pregnant women during the period of January 2018-September 2020. For data collection, a pretested, structured questionnaire was used. Blood samples were collected after obtaining consent, and then we studied the extracted gene by using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 18.0 was used for data management and analysis. The genotype CT variant among preeclamptic women was more than that of non-preeclamptic women (26.5% vs. 18.6%), but not significant ( = 0.180). The risk of preeclampsia among women with CT genotypes was 1.57 times higher than that of women with CC genotypes (OR (95%CI) = 1.57 (0.81, 3.06), = 0.180). The minor allele frequency of the T allele was 15.2% in preeclamptic women and 9.3% in normal pregnant women. The risk of preeclampsia among T allele carriers is 1.49 times (95%CI = 0.80, 2.77) more than that of C allele carriers ( = 0.211). Among the preeclamptic pregnant women, the frequency of the CT genotype was 26.3% in the severe preeclamptic group and 26.9% in the mild preeclamptic group, while the frequency of the T allele was 13.2% and 13.5%, respectively. The frequency of either CT genotype or T allele was more or less the same in both groups, and there was no association between VEGF C/T polymorphism and the severity of preeclampsia. After logistic regression analysis on VEGF genotype and clinical parameters such as age, maternal body mass index (BMI), and neonatal birth weight, the risk of preeclampsia was 2.1 times higher in pregnant women with CT genotype compared to CC genotype (adjusted OR, 2.1; 95% CI, 0.9-4.5, value -0.057). There was no significant association between VEGF +936C/T polymorphism (rs3025039) and preeclampsia among Myanmar pregnant women. However, the findings of this study highlighted that individuals carrying either the CT genotype or the T allele are at a heightened risk of developing preeclampsia. Furthermore, it suggests a potential impact of the gene on the occurrence of preeclampsia, yet the data lacks sufficient evidence to establish statistical significance.

INTRODUCTION
Preeclampsia is a disease with an unknown pathogenesis and is one of the leading causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity. At present, early identification of high-risk groups for preeclampsia and timely intervention with aspirin is an effective preventive method against preeclampsia. This study aims to develop a robust and effective preeclampsia prediction model with good performance by machine learning algorithms based on maternal characteristics, biophysical and biochemical markers at 11-13 + weeks' gestation, providing an effective tool for early screening and prediction of preeclampsia.
METHODS
This study included 5116 singleton pregnant women who underwent PE screening and fetal aneuploidy from a prospective cohort longitudinal study in China. Maternal characteristics (such as maternal age, height, pre-pregnancy weight), past medical history, mean arterial pressure, uterine artery pulsatility index, pregnancy-associated plasma protein A, and placental growth factor were collected as the covariates for the preeclampsia prediction model. Five classification algorithms including Logistic Regression, Extra Trees Classifier, Voting Classifier, Gaussian Process Classifier and Stacking Classifier were applied for the prediction model development. Five-fold cross-validation with an 8:2 train-test split was applied for model validation.
RESULTS
We ultimately included 49 cases of preterm preeclampsia and 161 cases of term preeclampsia from the 4644 pregnant women data in the final analysis. Compared with other prediction algorithms, the AUC and detection rate at 10% FPR of the Voting Classifier algorithm showed better performance in the prediction of preterm preeclampsia (AUC=0.884, DR at 10%FPR=0.625) under all covariates included. However, its performance was similar to that of other model algorithms in all PE and term PE prediction. In the prediction of all preeclampsia, the contribution of PLGF was higher than PAPP-A (11.9% VS 8.7%), while the situation was opposite in the prediction of preterm preeclampsia (7.2% VS 16.5%). The performance for preeclampsia or preterm preeclampsia using machine learning algorithms was similar to that achieved by the fetal medicine foundation competing risk model under the same predictive factors (AUCs of 0.797 and 0.856 for PE and preterm PE, respectively).
CONCLUSIONS
Our models provide an accessible tool for large-scale population screening and prediction of preeclampsia, which helps reduce the disease burden and improve maternal and fetal outcomes.

Background Most pregnancy-related complications and undesirable outcomes are preventable by effective interventions at a reasonable cost. These interventions are mainly deployed during the antenatal phase and are included under the umbrella of antenatal care (ANC). To our knowledge, no studies have been conducted to assess the adequacy of ANC in Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to measure and quantify the adequacy of ANC provided by the Ministry of Health (MoH) facilities in Jeddah and to determine potential factors influencing ANC. Methodology In this cross-sectional study, we used the Adequacy of Perinatal Care Utilization index to measure the adequacy of ANC. Data were collected from September 2023 to March 2024 in two randomly selected MoH hospitals by interviewing mothers and collecting data from medical records. Results A total of 303 mothers participated in this study. Mothers' mean age was 31 years, and 50% of them had received higher school education. Prevalence of adequate ANC was 64.7%. There was a significant association between the adequacy of ANC and mothers' level of education (p < 0.001), time taken to reach the nearest primary care center (p < 0.001), number of total pregnancies (p < 0.034), and the total number prenatal visits (p < 0.001). Conclusions This is the first study to shed light on the prevalence of adequacy of ANC in Saudi Arabia and its associated factors. This study would pave the way to investigate the adequacy of ANC on a national level and will aid policymakers in developing and implementing effective ANC preventive measures, hence helping improve women's health and their babies.

BACKGROUND
The SARS-CoV-2 virus activates maternal and placental immune responses. Such activation in the setting of other infections during pregnancy is known to impact fetal brain development. The effects of maternal immune activation on neurodevelopment are mediated at least in part by fetal brain microglia. However, microglia are inaccessible for direct analysis, and there are no validated non-invasive surrogate models to evaluate in utero microglial priming and function. We have previously demonstrated shared transcriptional programs between microglia and Hofbauer cells (HBCs, or fetal placental macrophages) in mouse models.
METHODS AND RESULTS
We assessed the impact of maternal SARS-CoV-2 on HBCs isolated from 24 term placentas (N = 10 SARS-CoV-2 positive cases, 14 negative controls). Using single-cell RNA-sequencing, we demonstrated that HBC subpopulations exhibit distinct cellular programs, with specific subpopulations differentially impacted by SARS-CoV-2. Assessment of differentially expressed genes implied impaired phagocytosis, a key function of both HBCs and microglia, in some subclusters. Leveraging previously validated models of microglial synaptic pruning, we showed that HBCs isolated from placentas of SARS-CoV-2 positive pregnancies can be transdifferentiated into microglia-like cells (HBC-iMGs), with impaired synaptic pruning behavior compared to HBC models from negative controls.
CONCLUSION
These findings suggest that HBCs isolated at birth can be used to create personalized cellular models of offspring microglial programming.
