OBJECTIVE
To systematically analyze the available scientific literature on clinical and radiographic results of two materials used in pulpotomy in primary teeth: formocresol and mineral trioxide aggregate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
It was identified relevant publications through a search of electronic databases such as MEDLINE (Ovid) and The Cochrane Library. To be included in the review, studies had to define the material used in child patients with pulp exposure by caries or tooth-alveolar trauma.
RESULTS
Of the 21 articles obtained in the initial phase of the review, only 19 were available in full text and of these only met the requirements for inclusion 6 items, which were confronted, analyzed and discussed later.
CONCLUSIONS
The clinical evidence available showed significant differences regarding the use of a material or another. In addition to the findings of clinical follow--radiographic and taking into account the potential toxicity of formocresol suggest the use of mineral trioxide aggregate pulpotomy of primary teeth.

Cosmetic products, especially perfumes and colognes, are widely used in various communities. However, the use of these products can have side effects on consumers. This article aims to review the relevant literature published up to August 2020 to determine whether perfumes and colognes can affect people's health. Relevant articles were identified through electronic search. A total of 562 articles were selected and finally 37 related articles were included in the study after the screening process. The results of this systematic study showed that phthalates, aldehydes, parabens and aluminum-based salts are the most important contaminants in aromatic products that cause side effects such as allergies, breast cancer, reproductive disorders, especially in males, skin allergies, nervous system damage and migraine headaches for consumers. The incidence of complications in people using these products depends on parameters such as age, gender, race, amount of substance consumed, duration of use and economic status, and regarding the relationship between diseases such as cancer, respiratory disorders and endocrine with common contaminants in aromatic products, incidence of these diseases is probable in consumers which require further research to prove.

Recently, it has been suggested that central and peripheral toxicities identified in persons with substance use disorder (SUD) could be partially associated with an imbalance in reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defenses. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate whether SUD is associated with oxidative stress and to identify biomarkers possibly more affected by this condition. We have included studies that analysed oxidant and antioxidant markers in individuals with SUD caused by stimulants, alcohol, nicotine, opioids, and others (cannabis, inhalants, and polysubstance use). Our analysis showed that persons with SUD show higher oxidant markers and lower antioxidant markers than healthy controls. SUD was associated specifically with higher levels of oxidant markers malondialdehyde, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and lipid peroxidation. Conversely, the antioxidant superoxide dismutase and the total antioxidant capacity/status were lowered in the SUD group. A meta-regression analysis revealed that persons with alcohol use disorder had higher oxidative stress estimates than those with stimulant use disorder. Moreover, individuals evaluated during abstinence showed smaller antioxidant effect sizes than non-abstinent ones. Our findings suggest a clear oxidative imbalance in persons with SUD, which could lead to cell damage and result in multiple associated comorbidities, particularly accelerated aging.

Exposure to nanomaterials (NMs) is suggested to have the potential to cause harmful health effects. Activations of oxidative stress and inflammation are assumed as main contributors to NM-induced toxicity. Thus, oxidative stress- and inflammation-related indicators may serve as biomarkers for occupational risk assessment. However, the correlation between NM exposure and these biomarkers remains controversial. This study aimed to perform a meta-analysis to systematically investigate the alterations of various biomarkers after NM exposure. Twenty-eight studies were found eligible by searching PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases. The pooled results showed NM exposure was significantly associated with increases in the levels of malonaldehyde (MDA) [standardized mean difference (SMD) = 2.18; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.50-2.87], 4-hydroxy-2-nonhenal (HNE) (SMD = 2.05; 95% CI, 1.13-2.96), aldehydes C6-12 (SMD = 3.45; 95% CI, 2.80-4.10), 8-hydroxyguanine (8-OHG) (SMD = 2.98; 95% CI, 2.22-3.74), 5-hydroxymethyl uracil (5-OHMeU) (SMD = 1.90; 95% CI, 1.23-2.58), o-tyrosine (o-Tyr) (SMD = 1.81; 95% CI, 1.22-2.41), 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NOTyr) (SMD = 2.63; 95% CI, 1.74-3.52), interleukin (IL)-1β (SMD = 1.76; 95% CI, 0.87-2.66), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α (SMD = 1.52; 95% CI, 1.03-2.01), myeloperoxidase (MPO) (SMD = 0.25; 95% CI, 0.16-0.34) and fibrinogen (SMD = 0.11; 95% CI, 0.02-0.21), and decreases in the levels of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) (SMD = -0.31; 95% CI, -0.52--0.11) and IL-6 soluble receptor (IL-6sR) (SMD = -0.18; 95% CI, -0.28--0.09). Subgroup analysis indicated oxidative stress biomarkers (MDA, HNE, aldehydes C6-12, 8-OHG, 5-OHMeU, o-Tyr, 3-NOTyr and GPx) in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and blood samples were strongly changed by NM exposure; inflammatory biomarkers (IL-1β, TNF-α, MPO, fibrinogen and IL-6sR) were all significant in EBC, blood, sputum and nasal lavage samples. In conclusion, our findings suggest that these oxidative stress and inflammatory indicators may be promising biomarkers for the biological monitoring of occupationally NM-exposed workers.

OBJECTIVE
Despite multiple published studies regarding the association between formaldehyde exposure and childhood asthma, a consistent association has not been identified. Here we report the results of a systematic review of published literature in order to provide a more comprehensive picture of this relationship.
DATA SOURCES
After a comprehensive literature search, we identified seven peer-reviewed studies providing quantitative results regarding the association between formaldehyde exposure and asthma in children. Studies were heterogeneous with respect to the definition of asthma (e.g., self-report, physician diagnosis). Most of the studies were cross-sectional.
DATA EXTRACTION
For each study, an odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for asthma were either abstracted from published results or calculated based on the data provided. Characteristics regarding the study design and population were also abstracted.
DATA SYNTHESIS
We used fixed- and random-effects models to calculate pooled ORs and 95% CIs; measures of heterogeneity were also calculated. A fixed-effects model produced an OR of 1.03 (95% CI, 1.021.04), and random effects model produced an OR of 1.17 (95% CI, 1.011.36), both reflecting an increase of 10 microg/m3 of formaldehyde. Both the Q and I2 statistics indicated a moderate amount of heterogeneity.
CONCLUSIONS
Results indicate a significant positive association between formaldehyde exposure and childhood asthma. Given the largely cross-sectional nature of the studies underlying this meta-analysis, further well-designed prospective epidemiologic studies are needed.

BACKGROUND
To evaluate the clinical value of Aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B10 (AKR1B10) in the diagnosis and prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
METHODS
A search of the PubMed, China Biology Medicine, Cochrane, and Embase databases was performed to conduct meta-analyses to evaluate the accuracy of AKR1B10 in diagnosing HCC and to assess the impact on prognosis of patients after curative resection of HCC.
RESULTS
A total of 12 different cohorts from 11 studies including 2747 HCC patients and 2053 controls showed that the pooled specificity and the pooled sensitivity of AKR1B10 for the diagnosis of HCC were 0.78 (95% CI: 0.69-0.85) and 0.85 (95% CI: 0.77-0.90), respectively. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of serum AKR1B10 for the diagnosis of HCC were 0.80 (95% CI: 0.70-0.86) and 0.87 (95% CI: 0.77-0.93), respectively. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of AKR1B10 in malignant tumor tissue for the diagnosis of HCC were 0.78 (95% CI: 0.61-0.89) and 0.82 (95% CI: 0.69-0.90), respectively. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of AKR1B10 to distinguish HCC from benign liver disease were 0.71 (95% CI: 0.62-0.78) and 0.84 (95% CI: 0.77-0.89), respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of AKR1B10 combined with alpha fetoprotein (AFP) in the diagnosis of HCC were 0.84 (95% CI: 0.79-0.88) and 0.88 (95% CI: 0.73-0.95), respectively. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of AKR1B10 in malignant tumor tissue for the diagnosis of early-stage HCC were 0.85 (95% CI: 0.62-0.95) and 0.88 (95% CI: 0.81-0.93), respectively. A meta-analysis of five studies including 798 patients demonstrated that high AKR1B10 expression in liver malignant tumor was associated with better overall survival in patients with HCC after hepatectomy (HR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.41-0.72, p < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS
AKR1B10 exhibits a great clinical value in the diagnosis of HCC, especially for early-stage HCC, with excellent diagnostic accuracy. Furthermore, AKR1B10 expression can predict the prognosis of HCC patients after hepatic resection.

BACKGROUND
Oxidative stress may lead to overproduction of reactive species and a decrease in antioxidant defenses, resulting in chronic diseases such as diabetes and cancer. The consumption of natural compounds with an antioxidant profile may be a preventive alternative. Therefore, we aimed to obtain evidence regarding the potential antioxidant activity of juices in human plasma.
METHODS
A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed, which included randomized controlled trials that compared the use of fruit or vegetable juices vs. placebo or other beverages. An electronic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, and SciELO. The outcome measures extracted were related to antioxidant status, e.g., vitamin C, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) levels and reduction in malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidant capacity measured as TEAC.
RESULTS
Twenty-eight trials were identified (n = 1089), of which 16 were used for meta-analysis. No significant differences were observed between juices and placebo with regard to TEAC, SOD, and CAT. However, juices were superior to control in enhancing vitamin C and reducing MDA.
CONCLUSIONS
Natural juices are possible candidates for the management of oxidative stress. The effects of juices should be further investigated by conducting larger and well-defined trials of longer duration.

The association between Aldehyde dehydrogenase II (ALDH-2) rs671 polymorphism and essential hypertension (EH) risk or blood pressure (BP) levels remains unclear. To systematically review the influence of the aldehyde dehydrogenase II rs671 polymorphism on essential hypertension risk and blood pressure levels. The PubMed, EMbase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNKI and CBM databases were electronically searched to identify case-control or cohort studies published prior to July 2019 that examined the association between the rs671 polymorphism and the risk of essential hypertension or blood pressure levels. A meta-analysis was conducted with Stata 15.1 software. Twenty-two articles were included. Among these articles, 20 incorporated 30 individual studies evaluating the association between the rs671 polymorphism and EH (11,051 hypertensive patients and 15,926 normotensive controls), and 8 incorporated 12 individual studies evaluating the association between the rs671 polymorphism and BP (20,512 subjects). The results of the meta-analysis showed that the mutation of the rs671 polymorphism was associated with a significantly decreased risk of EH in all models: allelic model (OR = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.73-0.87), homozygous model (OR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.63-0.80), heterozygous model (OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.72-0.87), dominant model (OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.71-0.87), and recessive model (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.68-0.85). In the stratified analyses, significant associations were found for males, drinkers and population-based studies. Simultaneously, the A carriers had lower SBP (WMD = -1.78, 95% CI: -3.02 to -0.53) and DBP (WMD = -1.09, 95% CI: -1.58 to -0.61) levels than individuals with the GG homozygote. The collective findings of this meta-analysis suggested that the ALDH-2 rs671 polymorphism represented an important genetic marker in the development of hypertension. Considering the overall quality of evidence and the relatively small pooled sample size, more well-conducted high-quality studies are required to verify the above conclusion. PURPOSE
Recent epidemiologic studies indicate elevated risks for some lymphohematopoietic malignancies (LHM) related to formaldehyde exposure. We performed a systematic review of literature to assess the strength and consistency of associations.
METHODS
We summarized published literature in the PubMed database of the National Library of Medicine during 1966-2012. Literature was categorized according to study design and population: industrial cohort studies, professional cohort studies, and population-based case-control studies.
RESULTS
Findings from occupational cohort and population-based case-control studies were very inconsistent for LHM, including myeloid leukemia. Apart from some isolated exceptions, relative risks were close to the null, and there was little evidence for dose-response relations for any of the LHM.
CONCLUSIONS
At present, there is no consistent or strong epidemiologic evidence that formaldehyde is causally related to any of the LHM. The absence of established toxicological mechanisms further weakens any arguments for causation. To be informative, future epidemiologic research should improve on formaldehyde exposure assessment and apply modern diagnostic schemes for specific LHM.

OBJECTIVE
Metabolomics has been extensively utilized in bladder cancer (BCa) research, employing mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to compare various variables (tissues, serum, blood, and urine). This study aimed to identify potential biomarkers for early BCa diagnosis.
METHODS
A search strategy was designed to identify clinical trials, descriptive and analytical observational studies from databases such as Medline, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences. Inclusion criteria comprised studies involving BCa tissue, serum, blood, or urine profiling using widely adopted metabolomics techniques like mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. Primary outcomes included description of metabolites and metabolomics profiling in BCa patients and the association of metabolites and metabolomics profiling with BCa diagnosis compared to control patients. The risk of bias was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Studies of Diagnostic Accuracy.
RESULTS
The search strategy yielded 2832 studies, of which 30 case-control studies were included. Urine was predominantly used as the primary sample for metabolite identification. Risk of bias was often unclear inpatient selection, blinding of the index test, and reference standard assessment, but no applicability concerns were observed. Metabolites and metabolomics profiles associated with BCa diagnosis were identified in glucose, amino acids, nucleotides, lipids, and aldehydes metabolism.
CONCLUSION
The identified metabolites in urine included citric acid, valine, tryptophan, taurine, aspartic acid, uridine, ribose, phosphocholine, and carnitine. Tissue samples exhibited elevated levels of lactic acid, amino acids, and lipids. Consistent findings across tissue, urine, and serum samples revealed downregulation of citric acid and upregulation of lactic acid, valine, tryptophan, taurine, glutamine, aspartic acid, uridine, ribose, and phosphocholine.
