To evaluate the QoL before and after prosthetic rehabilitation of partial mandibulectomy patients based on the type of surgery, effects of radiation, the type of prosthesis, and to enlist their outcome on the rehabilitation. Literature search as per PICO format was carried out within a time range from January 2000 to June 2021. The review followed PRISMA guidelines and registered with the PROSPERO(CRD42021258472). The focus question was established as per the PICO format (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome). The population involved partial mandibulectomy individuals with prosthetic rehabilitation as an intervention. The outcome, quality of life (QoL), was compared with the pre and post partial mandibulectomy patients rehabilitated with a prosthesis. The search yielded 367 articles and based on the search criteria only 7 articles were suitable for qualitative analysis. Marginal resection of the mandible is less aggressive than segmental resection which provided function, phonation, and esthetics at acceptable levels but the food mixing ability was reduced when resection is accompanied by glossectomy. However, the perceived chewing ability and OHRQoL were not accountable to the extent of surgical excision. An overall increase in the QoL on rehabilitation with acrylic prosthesis depicting satisfactory functionality with a considerable improvement in mastication, speech, and social life. QoL and Denture Satisfaction Index did not differ based on the number of implants in an implant overdenture prosthesis, but the chewing ability was improved. An increase in the number of remaining occlusal units improved the overall QoL. Restoration of the function, psychological comfort, and improvement in esthetics was significant in patients who underwent prosthetic rehabilitation. The QoL between conventional and implant prostheses was observed to be more similar, and the effect of remaining hard and soft tissue structures has a major influence on patient comfort signifying the influence of the extent of surgical excision.

BACKGROUND
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic lung disease which feature is progressive airflow obstruction. Singing is a popular and convenient activity that requires people to manage their lung volumes and airflow actively. Despite the well-known benefits of singing to healthy people, the specific effect still remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE
To investigate the mental and psychological benefits of singing in patients with stable COPD.
SEARCH METHODS
We used Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Guidelines (PRISMA) on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) including singing exercise as the main intervention in stable COPD. We searched 8 electronic databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Clinical Trials.gov, and the Physical Therapy Evidence Database (PEDro), CNKI, and Wanfang Database from inception until May 2022. The searching languages was English or Chinese. Data extraction using standardized templates was performed by two independent reviewers. The quality of the studies was assessed using the PEDro scale. Data synthesis was performed with Revman 5.4. The pooled effect sizes are reported by MD and 95% CI.
RESULTS
Five RCTs involving 333 patients with stable COPD were included in this meta-analysis. Singing was regarded as the main intervention in the experimental group. Meta-analysis revealed that singing improves quality of life on Short Form 36 physical component summary (SF-36 PCS) (MD = 12.63, 95% CI: 5.52 to 19.73, < 0.01) and respiratory muscle in maximal expiratory pressure (PE) (MD = 14.30, 95% CI: 0.87 to 27.73, = 0.04) in patients with COPD. However, it has limited effects on Short Form 36 mental component summary (SF-36 MCS), lung function, exercise capability, and adverse mental state.
CONCLUSION
Based on results of the meta-analysis, singing could be used to improve quality of life (SF-36 PCS) and respiratory muscles (PE) in patients with COPD.

This review aims to describe the methods used to assess the vocal quality and quality of life of children after airway reconstruction and their limitations.
DATA SOURCES
A systematic review was carried out in 10 databases for articles published between 2000 and 2021 following the PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses).
REVIEW METHODS
Articles were included that described perceptual voice assessment with or without acoustic measures and/or voice quality impact questionnaires. Articles with no description of a specific voice assessment were excluded.
RESULTS
A total of 12 studies were included, yielding 263 patients. The mean age at evaluation was 9 years. Follow-up varied from 5 months to 20 years with most patients being evaluated at least a year after surgery. Methods used to evaluate voice were perceptual, aerodynamic, and acoustic analysis and quality of life questionnaires. CAPE-V (Consensus Auditory Perceptual Evaluation-Voice) was the most used auditory-perceptual instrument (72.7%). Of the acoustic parameters, fundamental frequency and maximum phonation time were the most described (58.3%), and among the quality of life assessment questionnaires, pVHI (Pediatric Voice Handicap Index) was the most used (54.5%).
CONCLUSION
Multidimensional evaluations tailored to the individual child can be recommended after open airway surgery. CAPE-V scale, fundamental frequency, maximum phonation time, and pVHI are the most frequently used methods; therefore, their use may help broaden communication among authors. In the multitude of methods available, cognitive ability and degree of voice disturbance should be considered since they are the most important limiting factors in this population.

INTRODUCTION
During the aging process, natural modifications occur in the larynx and the structures involved in phonation which explain the specific characteristics found in the voices of elderly persons. When, at any moment, a voice fails and there is interference with communication, a voice disorder has occurred. This can generate disadvantages in communicative efficiency and have a negative impact on quality of life, compromising mechanisms of socialization, the maintenance of autonomy, and the sense of well-being. Nevertheless, there appears to be little clarity about which factors are associated with voice disorders in this population, especially from an epidemiological perspective.
OBJECTIVE
The present study is a literature review to identify factors associated with voice disorders among the elderly described in population-based studies.
METHODS
A systematic review of electronic databases was carried out. The methodological quality of the studies was analyzed with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines. The research was conducted independently by two researchers.
RESULTS
Although two articles met the eligibility criteria, none fulfilled all the criteria for the evaluation of methodological quality. According to the two studies selected for this review, factors associated with voice disorders among the elderly included both physical and psychosocial aspects. However, the methodological discrepancies between the studies, particularly in relation to sample selection and the instruments used indicate great variability and compromise the reliability of the results.
CONCLUSION
Further prevalence studies and investigations of factors associated with voice disorders in the elderly from an epidemiological perspective, and which involve different cultures, should be carried out.

OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the evidence of aerosol generation across tasks involved in voice and speech assessment and intervention, to inform better management and to reduce transmission risk of such diseases as COVID-19 in healthcare settings and the wider community.
DESIGN
Systematic literature review.
DATA SOURCES AND ELIGIBILITY
Medline, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, PubMed Central and grey literature through ProQuest, The Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, COVID-Evidence and speech pathology national bodies were searched up until August 13th, 2020 for articles examining the aerosol-generating activities in clinical voice and speech assessment and intervention within speech pathology.
RESULTS
Of the 8288 results found, 39 studies were included for data extraction and analysis. Included articles were classified into one of three categories: research studies, review articles or clinical guidelines. Data extraction followed appropriate protocols depending on the classification of each article (e.g. PRISMA for review articles). Articles were assessed for risk of bias and certainty of evidence using the GRADE system. Six behaviours were identified as aerosol generating. These were classified into three categories: vegetative acts (coughing, breathing), verbal communication activities of daily living (speaking, loud voicing), and performance-based tasks (singing, sustained phonation). Certainty of evidence ranged from very low to moderate with variation in research design and variables.
CONCLUSIONS
This body of literature helped to both identify and categorise the aerosol-generating behaviours involved in speech pathology clinical practice and confirm the low level of evidence throughout the speech pathology literature pertaining to aerosol generation. As many aerosol-generating behaviours are common human behaviours, these findings can be applied across healthcare and community settings.

There is growing interest in Singing for Lung Health (SLH), an approach where patients with respiratory disease take part in singing groups, intended to improve their condition. A consensus group was convened in early 2016 to address issues including: the specific features that make SLH distinct from other forms of participation in singing; the existing evidence base via a systematic review; gaps in the evidence base including the need to define value-based outcome measures for sustainable commissioning of SLH; defining the measures needed to evaluate both individuals' responses to SLH and the quality of singing programmes. and core training, expertise and competencies required by singing group leaders to deliver high-quality programmes. A systematic review to establish the extent of the evidence base for SLH was undertaken. Electronic databases, including Pubmed, OVID Medline and Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane central register of controlled trials and PEDro, were used. Six studies were included in the final review. Quantitative data suggest that singing has the potential to improve health-related quality of life, particularly related to physical health, and levels of anxiety without causing significant side effects. There is a significant risk of bias in many of the existing studies with small numbers of subjects overall. Little comparison can be made between studies owing to their heterogeneity in design. Qualitative data indicate that singing is an enjoyable experience for patients, who consistently report that it helps them to cope with their condition better. Larger and longer-term trials are needed.

Poor voice quality due to a voice disorder can lead to a reduced quality of life. In occupations where voice use is substantial it can lead to periods of absence from work.
OBJECTIVES
To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to prevent voice disorders in adults.
SEARCH STRATEGY
We searched MEDLINE (PubMed, 1950 to 2006), EMBASE (1974 to 2006), CENTRAL (The Cochrane Library, Issue 2 2006), CINAHL (1983 to 2006), PsychINFO (1967 to 2006), Science Citation Index (1986 to 2006) and the Occupational Health databases OSH-ROM (to 2006). The date of the last search was 05/04/06.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs) of interventions evaluating the effectiveness of treatments to prevent voice disorders in adults. For work-directed interventions interrupted time series and prospective cohort studies were also eligible.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Two authors independently extracted data and assessed trial quality. Meta-analysis was performed where appropriate.
MAIN RESULTS
We identified two randomised controlled trials including a total of 53 participants in intervention groups and 43 controls. One study was conducted with teachers and the other with student teachers. Both trials were poor quality. Interventions were grouped into 1) direct voice training, 2) indirect voice training and 3) direct and indirect voice training combined.1) Direct voice training: One study did not find a significant decrease of the Voice Handicap Index for direct voice training compared to no intervention.2) Indirect voice training: One study did not find a significant decrease of the Voice Handicap Index for indirect voice training when compared to no intervention.3) Direct and indirect voice training combined: One study did not find a decrease of the Voice Handicap Index for direct and indirect voice training combined when compared to no intervention. The same study did however find an improvement in maximum phonation time (Mean Difference -3.18 sec; 95 % CI -4.43 to -1.93) for direct and indirect voice training combined when compared to no intervention. No work-directed studies were found. None of the studies found evaluated the effectiveness of prevention in terms of sick leave or number of diagnosed voice disorders.
AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS
We found no evidence that either direct or indirect voice training or the two combined are effective in improving self-reported vocal functioning when compared to no intervention. The current practice of giving training to at-risk populations for preventing the development of voice disorders is therefore not supported by definitive evidence of effectiveness. Larger and methodologically better trials are needed with outcome measures that better reflect the aims of interventions.

BACKGROUND
Singing is a complex physical activity dependent on the use of the lungs for air supply to regulate airflow and create large lung volumes. In singing, exhalation is active and requires active diaphragm contraction and good posture. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive, chronic lung disease characterised by airflow obstruction. Singing is an activity with potential to improve health outcomes in people with COPD.
OBJECTIVES
To determine the effect of singing on health-related quality of life and dyspnoea in people with COPD.
SEARCH METHODS
We identified trials from the Cochrane Airways Specialised Register, ClinicalTrials.gov, the World Health Organization trials portal and PEDro, from their inception to August 2017. We also reviewed reference lists of all primary studies and review articles for additional references.
SELECTION CRITERIA
We included randomised controlled trials in people with stable COPD, in which structured supervised singing training of at least four sessions over four weeks' total duration was performed. The singing could be performed individually or as part of a group (choir) facilitated by a singing leader. Studies were included if they compared: 1) singing versus no intervention (usual care) or another control intervention; or 2) singing plus pulmonary rehabilitation versus pulmonary rehabilitation alone.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Two review authors independently screened and selected trials for inclusion, extracted outcome data and assessed risk of bias. We contacted authors of trials for missing data. We calculated mean differences (MDs) using a random-effects model. We were only able to analyse data for the comparison of singing versus no intervention or a control group.
MAIN RESULTS
Three studies (a total of 112 participants) were included. All studies randomised participants to a singing group or a control group. The comparison groups included a film workshop, handcraft work, and no intervention. The frequency of the singing intervention in the studies ranged from 1 to 2 times a week over a 6 to 24 week period. The duration of each singing session was 60 minutes.All studies included participants diagnosed with COPD with a mean age ranging from 67 to 72 years and a mean forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV) ranging from 37% to 64% of predicted values. The sample size of included studies was small (33 to 43 participants) and overall study quality was low to very low. Blinding of personnel and participants was not possible due to the physical nature of the intervention, and selection and reporting bias was present in two studies.For the primary outcome of health-related quality of life, there was no statistically significant improvement in the St George's Respiratory Questionnaire total score (mean difference (MD) -0.82, 95% confidence interval (CI) -4.67 to 3.02, 2 studies, n = 58, low-quality evidence). However, there was a statistically significant improvement in the SF-36 Physical Component Summary (PCS) score favouring the singing group (MD 12.64, 95% CI 5.50 to 19.77, 2 studies, n = 52, low-quality evidence). Only one study reported results for the other primary outcome of dyspnoea, in which the mean improvement in Baseline Dyspnoea Index (BDI) score favouring the singing group was not statistically significant (MD 0.40, 95% CI -0.65 to 1.45, 1 study, n = 30, very low-quality evidence).No studies examined any long-term outcomes and no adverse events or side effects were reported.
AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS
There is low to very low-quality evidence that singing is safe for people with COPD and improves physical health (as measured by the SF-36 physical component score), but not dyspnoea or respiratory-specific quality of life. The evidence is limited due to the low number of studies and the small sample size of each study. No evidence exists examining the long-term effect of singing for people with COPD. The absence of studies examining singing performed in conjunction with pulmonary rehabilitation precludes the formulation of conclusions about the effects of singing in this context. More randomised controlled trials with larger sample sizes and long-term follow-up, and trials examining the effect of singing in addition to pulmonary rehabilitation, are required to determine the effect of singing on health-related quality of life and dyspnoea in people with COPD.

BACKGROUND
The reading skills of 16% of children fall below the mean range for their age, and 5% of children have significant and severe reading problems. Phonics training is one of the most common reading treatments used with poor readers, particularly children.
OBJECTIVES
To measure the effect of phonics training and explore the impact of various factors, such as training duration and training group size, that might moderate the effect of phonics training on literacy-related skills in English-speaking poor readers.
SEARCH METHODS
We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, 12 other databases, and three trials registers up to May 2018. We also searched reference lists of included studies and contacted experts in the field to identify additional studies.
SELECTION CRITERIA
We included studies that used randomisation, quasi-randomisation, or minimisation to allocate participants to a phonics intervention group (phonics training only or phonics training plus one other literacy-related skill) or a control group (no training or non-literacy training). Participants were English-speaking poor readers with word reading one standard deviation below the appropriate level for their age (children, adolescents, and adults) or one grade or year below the appropriate level (children only), for no known reason. Participants had no known comorbid developmental disorder, or physical, neurological, or emotional problem.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
We used standard methodological procedures expected by Cochrane.
MAIN RESULTS
We included 14 studies with 923 participants in this review. Studies took place in Australia, Canada, the UK, and the USA. Six of the 14 included studies were funded by government agencies and one was funded by a university grant. The rest were funded by charitable foundations or trusts. Each study compared phonics training alone, or in conjunction with one other reading-related skill, to either no training (i.e. treatment as usual) or alterative training (e.g. maths). Participants were English-speaking children or adolescents, of low and middle socioeconomic status, whose reading was one year, one grade, or one standard deviation below the level expected for their age or grade for no known reason. Phonics training varied between studies in intensity (up to four hours per week), duration (up to seven months), training group size (individual and small groups), and delivery (human and computer). We measured the effect of phonics training on seven primary outcomes (mixed/regular word reading accuracy, non-word reading accuracy, irregular word reading accuracy, mixed/regular word reading fluency, non-word reading fluency, reading comprehension, and spelling). We judged all studies to be at low risk of bias for most risk criteria, and used the GRADE approach to assess the quality of the evidence.There was low-quality evidence that phonics training may have improved poor readers' accuracy for reading real and novel words that follow the letter-sound rules (standardised mean difference (SMD) 0.51, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.13 to 0.90; 11 studies, 701 participants), and their accuracy for reading words that did not follow these rules (SMD 0.67, 95% CI 0.26 to 1.07; 10 studies, 682 participants). There was moderate-quality evidence that phonics training probably improved English-speaking poor readers' fluency for reading words that followed the letter-sounds rules (SMD 0.45, 95% CI 0.19 to 0.72; 4 studies, 224 participants), and non-word reading fluency (SMD 0.39, 95% CI 0.10 to 0.68; 3 studies, 188 participants), as well as their accuracy for reading words that did not follow these rules (SMD 0.84, 95% CI 0.30 to 1.39; 4 studies, 294 participants). In addition, there was low-quality evidence that phonics training may have improved poor readers' spelling (SMD 0.47, 95% CI -0.07 to 1.01; 3 studies, 158 participants), but only slightly improve their reading comprehension (SMD 0.28, 95% CI -0.07 to 0.62; 5 studies, 343 participants).
AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS
Phonics training appears to be effective for improving literacy-related skills, particularly reading fluency of words and non-words, and accuracy of reading irregular words. More studies are needed to improve the precision of outcomes, including word and non-word reading accuracy, reading comprehension, spelling, letter-sound knowledge, and phonological output. More data are also needed to determine if phonics training in English-speaking poor readers is moderated by factors such as training type, intensity, duration, group size, or administrator.

Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is a common disorder that may cause glottal closure insufficiency and then hoarseness of voice and aspiration during swallowing. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate whether hyaluronic acid (HA) injection laryngoplasty (IL) is an effective treatment for patients with UVFP. Comprehensive systematic searches were undertaken using PubMed, EBSCO Medline, and Cochrane Library databases. We appraised the quality of studies according to preset inclusion and exclusion criteria. The lengths of follow-up were divided into "short-term" (3 months or shorter), "medium-term" (6 months), and "long-term" (12 months or longer). We performed random-effect meta-analysis to estimate the changes in voice-related quality of life, perceptual evaluation by grading systems, voice lab analysis of maximal phonation time, and normalized glottal gap area, before and after HA IL. Fourteen studies were eligible for the final analysis. The results showed that patients' glottal closure insufficiency could be improved; maximal phonation time could be prolonged; perceptual evaluations of the voice and quality of life were better after HA IL, but the duration of treatment effect varied among different studies. In conclusion, HA IL is an effective treatment for UVFP, which may achieve a long-term effect and therefore reduce the likelihood of requiring permanent medialization thyroplasty.
