BACKGROUND
To evaluate the dynamically impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the female reproductive system.
METHODS
An online survey was shared to women of reproductive age who had been infected with COVID-19 and recovered in China between January and March 2023.
RESULTS
In total, 610 women of childbearing age completed the menstrual component of the survey and 82.6% (n=504) women self-purchased medications without hospitalization. 254 women were menstruating during COVID-19 infection. 66.9% of them reported changes in menstruation, including cycle length (64.7%), menstrual flow (72.4%), and duration (53%), compared to pre-COVID-19. COVID-19-related chest tightness (OR: 9.5; 95% CI: 1.9-46.3), COVID-19-related stress (OR: 18.4; 95% CI: 1.4-249.7), and COVID-19-related low mood (OR: 6.2; 95% CI: 1.4-28.2) were associated with these menstrual changes. However, over 73% of women who menstruated during and after COVID-19 regained their pre-infection menstrual cycle (73%), duration (79.6%), and flow (75.2%) during their first menstruation after COVID-19 recovery. Compared to pre-infection, 19.7% (n=124) women reported changes in lower reproductive tract during COVID-19, including volume and color of vaginal discharge, vulvar pruritus, and vaginitis. These changes were significantly increased in those with a history of pelvic inflammatory disease (OR: 12.1; 95% CI: 3.1-48.2), ovarian cysts (OR: 4.9; 95% CI: 1.2-19.4), and vaginitis (OR: 5.5; 95% CI: 2.1-14.4) prior to COVID-19. However, 52.4% reported that their lower reproductive tract health had returned to its pre-infection within the first month after recovery from COVID-19, while 73.5% reported a return to the pre-infection within 2 months.
CONCLUSION
Changes in menstruation and lower reproductive tract associated with COVID-19 are transient. Menstruation and lower reproductive tract health will gradually return to pre-COVID-19 status within 2 months of recovery, which can help alleviate excessive concerns about the effects of COVID-19 on the reproductive system.

BACKGROUND
Recurrent herpes labialis (RHL) is a disorder with serious health and social consequences and which affects most of the adults. However, high degree of research paucity pertaining to its prevalence was observed, especially from India.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of RHL in western Maharashtra.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
In this prospective study, 1368 patients of either sex, satisfying the inclusion criteria, were included in the study after screening 34,560 patients for RHL lesions. Demographic data such as age, gender and risk factors, namely stress, menstruation and common cold, were recorded. Further, data regarding history of itching, fever, malaise and burning on lips followed by vesicles and frequency of lesions and duration were also recorded. After clinical examination site, size and nature of lesion were noted on a clinical pro forma. Results were compared statistically, and < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
RESULTS
The majority of the patients were in the age group of 30-39 years, with a female predominance (63.89%) (male:female = 0.33:0.59). Stress (43%) was the most common risk factor in the occurrence of RHL, followed by disturbed menstruation cycle (21%). Most of the patients had two episodes of RHL (42.4%), whereas some had just one episode of recurrence (25.4%) in the past 1 year. The most commonly occurring location for RHL was upper lip (47%), especially the left side (19.1%) and right side (18.2%) of the upper lip. The overall prevalence rate of RHL in our study was 3.9%.
CONCLUSION
An established prevalence (3.9%) of RHL occurs among patients in western Maharashtra.

BACKGROUND
To examine the correlation between the occurrence of adenomyosis and the outcome of vaginal repair of cesarean section scar defects (CSDs).
METHODS
A total of 278 women with CSD were enrolled in this retrospective observational cohort study at the Shanghai First Maternity & Infant Hospital between January 2013 and August 2017. Patients were divided into two groups according to preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings: the adenomyosis group and the non-adenomyosis group. They all underwent vaginal excision and suturing of CSDs and were required to undergo examinations 3 and 6 months after surgery. Preoperative and postoperative clinical information was collected. Optimal healing was defined as a duration of menstruation of no more than 7 days and a thickness of the residual myometrium (TRM) of no less than 5.8 mm after vaginal repair.
RESULTS
Before vaginal repair, for patients in the adenomyosis group, the mean duration of menstruation was longer and TRM was significantly thinner than those in patients in the non-adenomyosis group (p < 0.05). The TRM and duration of menstruation 3 and 6 months after surgery were significantly improved in both groups (p < 0.05). There were more patients with optimal healing in the non-adenomyosis group than in the adenomyosis group (44.7% vs. 30.0%; p < 0.05). Furthermore, 59.3% (32/54) of the women tried to conceive after vaginal repair. The pregnancy rates of women with and without adenomyosis were 66.7% (8/12) and 61.9% (26/42), respectively. The duration of menstruation decreased significantly from 13.4 ± 3.3 days before vaginal repair to 7.6 ± 2.3 days after vaginal repair in 25 patients (p < 0.001). The TRM increased significantly from 2.3 ± 0.8 mm before vaginal repair to 7.6 ± 2.9 mm after vaginal repair (p < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS
Vaginal repair reduced postmenstrual spotting and may have improved fertility in patients with CSDs. Patients with adenomyosis are more likely to have suboptimal menstruation and suboptimal healing of CSDs. Adenomyosis might be an adverse factor in the repair of uterine incisions.

INTRODUCTION
Although several studies have investigated the association between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines and the menstrual cycle, available data are limited. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of COVID-19 vaccines on the menstrual cycle and the effect of the menstrual cycle phase on the vaccine side effects during vaccine administration in Japan.
METHODS
A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on the date of vaccination; type of vaccine; type, grade, and duration of the side effects; regularity of menstruation; normal length of the menstrual cycle; and the day one date of menstruation around vaccination. The survey was conducted from October 2021 to March 2022.
RESULTS
The difference between the predicted and actual menstrual cycle length was 1.9 ± 3.0, 1.6 ± 2.8 (p = 0.557), and 2.5 ± 3.8 (p = 0.219) days before vaccination and after the first and second dose of the vaccine, respectively. In participants who received vaccinations twice within a single menstrual cycle, this difference was 1.3 ± 3.5 and 3.9 ± 3.3 (p = 0.045) days before and after vaccination, respectively. The grade and proportion of the side effects after the second dose of the vaccine was highest during the menstrual period and lowest during the ovulation period, with a significant effect on headache and chills.
CONCLUSION
COVID-19 vaccines tended to prolong the menstrual cycle. The side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine tended to be at a maximum when vaccination occurred during the menstrual period and minimal during the ovulation period.

AIM
To describe the prevalence of perceived premenstrual and menstrual changes after COVID-19 vaccine administration.
DESIGN
Cross-sectional study.
METHODS
A total of 14,153 women (mean age 31.5 ± 9.3 years old) who had received the full course of vaccination at least three months earlier were included in this cross-sectional study. Data including the type of vaccine administered, perceived changes in the amount and duration of menstrual bleeding, presence of clots, cycle length, and premenstrual symptoms were collected through a retrospective online survey from June to September 2021.
RESULTS
Of the women who participated in this study, 3136 reported no menstrual changes and 11,017 (78% of the study sample) reported experiencing menstrual cycle changes after vaccination. In summary, women who reported menstrual changes after vaccination were older (overall < 0.001) and slightly more smokers ( = 0.05) than women who did not report any changes. The most prevalent changes in relation to premenstrual symptoms were increased fatigue (43%), abdominal bloating (37%), irritability (29%), sadness (28%), and headaches (28%). The most predominant menstrual changes were more menstrual bleeding (43%), more menstrual pain (41%), delayed menstruation (38%), fewer days of menstrual bleeding (34.5%), and shorter cycle length (32%).
CONCLUSION
Women vaccinated against COVID-19 usually perceive mild menstrual and premenstrual changes. Future studies are warranted to clarify the physiological mechanisms behind these widely reported changes.

BACKGROUND
Although most women would want to wait for more than two years before having another baby, their fertility behaviours during the first year following birth may decrease or increase the length of the birth interval. The objectives of this study were to: assess how protected postpartum women in the Mfantseman municipal were against pregnancy, based on their patterns of amenorrhoea and sexual abstinence; determine the timing of postpartum contraception in relation to amenorrhoea and sexual abstinence; and determine the predictors of postpartum contraceptive use.
METHODS
This was a prospective study carried out in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central region of Ghana. Out of 1914 women attending antenatal clinic in the municipal within the study period, 1350 agreed to be part of the study to ascertain their postpartum fertility and contraceptive behaviours a year following delivery. These women were traced to their communities using telephone and house numbers provided and only 1003 of the women were finally traced and interviewed. The women were asked about their breastfeeding behaviour, postpartum sexual abstinence, duration of amenorrhoea and postpartum contraceptive use.
RESULTS
The mean age of the respondents was 29.9 ± 6.5 years; adolescents constituted the least proportion (3.3%) of the women. More than half (54.1%) of the women had Middle, Junior secondary school or Junior high school education. Most (43.3%) of the women were married by means of traditional rites and more than half (51.4%) of them were petty traders. The mean durations of breastfeeding, amenorrhoea and sexual abstinence were 6.6 ± 2.8 months, 7.8 ± 3.8 months and 4.4 ± 3.1 months respectively, whilst mean time of first contraceptive uptake was 3.5 ± 2.7 months postpartum. The time to first use of modern contraceptive method during the postpartum period indicates that about 50% of the women had started use of modern contraceptive methods by 2.7 months postpartum, and occured 0.6 and 3.6 months before sexual relations and resumption of menses respectively. Occupation (likelihood ratio = 0.013), area of residence (likelihood ratio = 0.004), mode of delivery (likelihood ratio < 0.001), breastfeeding ( = 0.024), period since delivery ( < 0.001), preferred number of children ( < 0.001) and parity ( < 0.001) were found to be predictors of postpartum contraceptive use.
CONCLUSION
Postpartum women in the Mfantseman municipal who did not use contraceptives or delayed in the use of contraceptives after birth were least likely to be protected against pregnancy in the post partum period, whilst those who adopted postpartum family planning were likely to be better protected because they were likely to adopt it within the first three months after birth and before the onset of sexual relations and first menses. The predictors of postpartum contraceptive use were breastfeeding pattern, occupation, parity, preferred number of children, period since delivery, place of residence and mode of delivery.

Background There is no sound evidence for the association of blood groups with the risk of endometriosis, and no studies from Saudi Arabia have examined this association. Therefore, the primary aim was to determine whether there is an association between the distribution of ABO and Rh blood groups and the incidence of endometriosis in a cohort from Saudi Arabia and also to evaluate the potential risk factors related to endometriosis among the population. Methods This case-control study included women diagnosed with endometriosis (n = 44) who presented to King Abdulaziz University Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between 2010 and 2021. Women from the blood donors database of King Abdulaziz University Hospital were included as a control group (n = 184). The total sample size was 228. Demographic data, diagnosis method, ABO blood type, and Rh blood type were obtained from hospital records. In addition, data were collected from self-reported questionnaires, which included family history, dysmenorrhea, age of menarche, age of childbearing, number of children, history of abortion, parity, number of children, use of oral contraceptives for alleviating dysmenorrhea, iron deficiency, duration of menstrual flow, and volume of bleeding during menses. Odds ratio, Pearson chi-squared test (χ2), and independent t-test were used to analyze the associations between variables. Results Most of the participants had blood type O (n = 117, 51.3%), which was followed by blood type A (n = 59, 26.0%), and the majority were Rh+ (n = 215, 94.3%). There was no significant difference in the risk of endometriosis according to ABO (P = 0.237) and Rh (P = 0.283) blood types. However, endometriosis was found to have a significant relationship with dysmenorrhea, heavy bleeding during menses, history of abortion, long duration of menstrual flow, lower number of children, late pregnancy, and use of oral contraceptive pills to relieve dysmenorrhea (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions The present results indicate that ABO and Rh blood types are not associated with the risk of endometriosis. However, there was a strong, significant association between endometriosis and other factors.

STUDY OBJECTIVES
Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS) is a rare, mostly sporadic disorder, characterized by intermittent episodes of hypersomnia plus cognitive and behavior disorders. Although its cause is unknown, multiplex families have been described. We contrasted the clinical and biological features of familial versus sporadic KLS.
METHODS
Two samples of patients with KLS from the United States and France (n = 260) were studied using clinical interviews and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotyping. A multiplex family contained two or more first- or second-degree affected relatives (familial cases).
RESULTS
Twenty-one patients from 10 multiplex families (siblings: n = 12, including two pairs of monozygotic twins; parent-child: n = 4; cousins: n = 2; uncle-nephews: n = 3) and 239 patients with sporadic KLS were identified, yielding to 4% multiplex families and 8% familial cases. The simplex and multiplex families did not differ for autoimmune, neurological, and psychiatric disorders. Age, sex ratio, ethnicity, HLA typing, karyotyping, disease course, frequency, and duration of KLS episodes did not differ between groups. Episodes were less frequent in familial versus sporadic KLS (2.3 ± 1.8/y versus 3.8 ± 3.7/y, P = 0.004). Menses triggered more frequently KLS onset in the nine girls with familial KLS (relative risk, RR = 4.12, P = 0.03), but not subsequent episodes. Familial cases had less disinhibited speech (RR = 3.44, P = 0.049), less combined hypophagia/hyperphagia (RR = 4.38, P = 0.006), more abrupt termination of episodes (RR = 1.45, P = 0.04) and less postepisode insomnia (RR = 2.16, P = 0.008). There was similar HLA DQB1 distribution in familial versus sporadic cases and no abnormal karyotypes.
CONCLUSION
Familial KLS is mostly present in the same generation, and is clinically similar to but slightly less severe than sporadic KLS.

OBJECTIVE
To compare the efficacy of transvaginal repair and hysteroscopic resection in improving niche associated postmenstrual spotting.
METHODS
The improvement rate of postmenstrual spotting in women who underwent transvaginal repair or hysteroscopic resection treatment was assessed retrospectively in patients accepted at the Niche Sub-Specialty Clinic in International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital between June 2017 and June 2019. Postoperative spotting symptom within one year after surgery, pre- and postoperative anatomical indicators, women' satisfaction with menstruation and other perioperative parameters were compared between the two groups.
RESULTS
68 patients in the transvaginal group and 70 patients in the hysteroscopic group were included for analysis. The improvement rate of postmenstrual spotting in the transvaginal group at the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th months after surgery was 87%, 88%, 84%, and 85%, significantly higher than 61%, 68%, 66%, and 68% in the hysteroscopic group, respectively ( < 0.05). The total days of spotting improved significantly at the 3rd month after surgery but did not change over time within one year in each group ( > 0.05). After surgery, the disappearance rates of the niche are 68% in transvaginal group and 38% in hysteroscopic group, however, hysteroscopic resection had shorter operative time and hospitalization duration, less complications, and lower hospitalization costs.
CONCLUSION
Both treatments can improve the spotting symptom and anatomical structures of uterine lower segments with niches. Transvaginal repair is better in thickening the residual myometrium than hysteroscopic resection, however, hysteroscopic resection has shorter operative time and hospitalization duration, less complications, and lower hospitalization costs.

The contraceptive effect of breast-feeding is the single most important determinant of human population growth rates in traditional societies without access to modern forms of contraception; lactational amenorrhoea is Nature's contraceptive. Even today, breast-feeding still prevents more pregnancies than all modern forms of contraception in many developing countries. Afferent neural inputs from the nipple pass via the spinal cord to the hypothalamus, where they cause a local release of beta endorphin. This acts to depress GnRH secretion, thereby inhibiting pituitary gonadotrophin secretion, ovarian follicular development, ovulation and menstruation. The hypothalamic beta endorphin release also inhibits dopamine production, resulting in increased pituitary prolactin secretion. The higher the suckling frequency, the more beta endorphin that is released and hence the longer the duration of lactational amenorrhoea. Lactational amenorrhoea can be relied up to give over 98% contraceptive protection to breast-feeding women in the first 6 months postpartum, regardless of their nutritional status or the time of first supplement introduction to the baby. This is because the first postpartum menstruation usually precedes the first ovulation during these early months. Once menstruation has resumed, lactation's contraceptive effect can no longer be relied upon, even though the woman continues to breast-feed. In breast-feeding women whose amenorrhoea extends beyond 6 months, there is an increasing tendency for the first ovulation to precede the first menstruation, thereby decreasing the reliability of lactational amenorrhoea as a contraceptive. Nevertheless, many women who continue to breast-feed may still have up to 1-2 years of good contraceptive protection from prolonged lactational amenorrhoea.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
