Definitions related to buthionine sulfoximine:
-
A drug that may help prevent resistance to some anticancer drugs.NCI Dictionary of Cancer TermsU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
A synthetic amino acid that depletes glutathione by irreversibly inhibiting gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase. Inhibition of this enzyme is a critical step in glutathione biosynthesis. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferative response in human T-lymphocytes and inhibit macrophage activation. -
A synthetic amino acid. Buthionine sulfoximine irreversibly inhibits gamma-glutamylcysteine synthase, thereby depleting cells of glutathione, a metabolite that plays a critical role in protecting cells against oxidative stress, and resulting in free radical-induced apoptosis. Elevated glutathione levels are associated with tumor cell resistance to alkylating agents and platinum compounds. By depleting cells of glutathione, this agent may enhance the in vitro and in vivo cytotoxicities of various chemotherapeutic agents in drug-resistant tumors. Buthionine sulfoximine may also exhibit antiangiogenesis activity. (NCI04)NCI ThesaurusU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
Used as a thiol depleter and inhibitor of the enzyme gamma glutamylcysteine synthase.CRISP ThesaurusNational Institutes of Health, 2006
