Definitions related to chronic lymphocytic leukemia:
-
(chronic lymphatic leukemia) A chronic lymphocytic/lymphatic/lymphoblastic leukemia (CLL) is a neoplastic disease characterized by proliferation and accumulation (blood, marrow and lymphoid organs) of morphologically mature but immunologically dysfunctional lymphocytes. A CLL is always a B-cell lymphocytic leukemia as there are no reports of cases of T-cell lymphocytic leukemias.Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO)The Human Phenotype Ontology Project, 2021
-
An indolent (slow-growing) cancer in which too many immature lymphocytes (white blood cells) are found mostly in the blood and bone marrow. Sometimes, in later stages of the disease, cancer cells are found in the lymph nodes and the disease is called small lymphocytic lymphoma.NCI Dictionary of Cancer TermsU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
Chronic leukemia characterized by morphologically mature but immunologically less mature lymphocytes; manifested by an abnormal accumulation of these cells in blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic tissue.CRISP ThesaurusNational Institutes of Health, 2006

Leukemia is cancer of the white blood cells. White blood cells help your body fight infection. Your blood cells form in your bone marrow. In leukemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells. These cells crowd out the healthy blood cells, making it hard for blood to do its work. In chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), there are too many lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. CLL is the second most common type of leukemia in adults. It often occurs during or after middle age and is rare in children. Usually CLL does not cause any symptoms. If you have symptoms, they may include Painless swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck, underarm, stomach, or groin; Fatigue; Pain or a feeling of fullness below the ribs; Fever and infection; Weight loss. Tests that examine the blood, bone marrow, and lymph nodes diagnose CLL. Your doctor may choose to just monitor you until symptoms appear or change. Treatments include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery to remove the spleen, and targeted therapy. Targeted therapy uses drugs or other substances that attack specific cancer cells with less harm to normal cells. NIH: National Cancer InstituteMedlinePlusU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021

The most common type of chronic lymphoid leukemia. It comprises 90% of chronic lymphoid leukemias in the United States. Morphologically, the neoplastic cells are small, round B-lymphocytes. This type of leukemia is not considered to be curable with available therapy. (WHO, 2001)NCI ThesaurusU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
(leukemia, lymphocytic, chronic, b-cell) A chronic leukemia characterized by abnormal B-lymphocytes and often generalized lymphadenopathy. In patients presenting predominately with blood and bone marrow involvement it is called chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL); in those predominately with enlarged lymph nodes it is called small lymphocytic lymphoma. These terms represent spectrums of the same disease.NLM Medical Subject HeadingsU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021
-
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is characterized by progressive accumulation of phenotypically mature malignant B lymphocytes. Primary sites of disease include peripheral blood, bone marrow, spleen, and lymph nodes. Symptoms and signs may be absent or may include lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, fatigue, fevers, night...Merck & Co., Inc., 2020

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (chronic lymphoid leukemia, CLL) is a monoclonal disorder characterized by a progressive accumulation of functionally incompetent lymphocytes (see the image below). It is the most common form of leukemia found in adults in Western countries.WebMD, 2019
-
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow - the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made.Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research
-
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a type of cancer of the white blood cells (lymphocytes). Early signs and symptoms may include swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, weight loss, fever, night sweats and/or frequent infections. CLL usually occurs in adults around the age of 70 and begins in the bone marrow and then spreads to the blood. Over...National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences
