Enzyme
cytochrome P450
Definitions related to cytochrome p450:
-
A family of cytochromes that are involved in electron transport and oxidative metabolism of drugs and other bioactive molecules. When the catalytic heme is reduced the absorbance peak for this protein occurs at 450 nm.NCI ThesaurusU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
Superfamily of closely related heme enzymes found throughout the phylogenetic spectrum; they catalyze the insertion of an atom of oxygen into substrates; in animals, these P-450 enzymes are involved in biosynthesis of steroids, fatty acids, and bile acids and also in metabolism of endogenous and a wide variety of exogenous substrates, such as toxins and drugs.CRISP ThesaurusNational Institutes of Health, 2006
-
(cytochrome p450 enzyme system) A group of enzymes involved in drug metabolism and found in high levels in the liver. These enzymes change many drugs, including anticancer drugs, into less toxic forms that are easier for the body to excrete.NCI Dictionary of Cancer TermsU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
(cytochrome p-450 enzyme system) A superfamily of hundreds of closely related HEMEPROTEINS found throughout the phylogenetic spectrum, from animals, plants, fungi, to bacteria. They include numerous complex monooxygenases (MIXED FUNCTION OXYGENASES). In animals, these P-450 enzymes serve two major functions: (1) biosynthesis of steroids, fatty acids, and bile acids; (2) metabolism of endogenous and a wide variety of exogenous substrates, such as toxins and drugs (BIOTRANSFORMATION). They are classified, according to their sequence similarities rather than functions, into CYP gene families (>40% homology) and subfamilies (>59% homology). For example, enzymes from the CYP1, CYP2, and CYP3 gene families are responsible for most drug metabolism.NLM Medical Subject HeadingsU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021
