Definitions related to lung diseases, interstitial:
-
(interstitial lung disease) A category of lung diseases characterized by varying degrees of inflammation and fibrosis of the interstitial lung tissue. Causes include occupational lung exposures and drugs. In a minority of cases there is no clear cause and such cases are termed idiopathic interstitial pneumonia.NCI ThesaurusU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
(interstitial lung disease) Heterogeneous group of noninfectious, nonmalignant disorders of the lower respiratory tract, affecting primarily the alveolar wall structures but also often involving the small airways and blood vessels of the lung parenchyma; may lead to respiratory insufficiency and death.CRISP ThesaurusNational Institutes of Health, 2006

(interstitial lung diseases) Interstitial lung disease is the name for a large group of diseases that inflame or scar the lungs. The inflammation and scarring make it hard to get enough oxygen. The scarring is called pulmonary fibrosis. Breathing in dust or other particles in the air is responsible for some types of interstitial lung diseases. Specific types include Black lung disease among coal miners, from inhaling coal dust; Farmer's lung, from inhaling farm dust; Asbestosis, from inhaling asbestos fibers; Siderosis, from inhaling iron from mines or welding fumes; Silicosis, from inhaling silica dust. Other causes include autoimmune diseases or occupational exposures to molds, gases, or fumes. Some types of interstitial lung disease have no known cause. Treatment depends on the type of exposure and the stage of the disease. It may involve medicines, oxygen therapy, or a lung transplant in severe cases.MedlinePlusU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021

A diverse group of lung diseases that affect the lung parenchyma. They are characterized by an initial inflammation of PULMONARY ALVEOLI that extends to the interstitium and beyond leading to diffuse PULMONARY FIBROSIS. Interstitial lung diseases are classified by their etiology (known or unknown causes), and radiological-pathological features.NLM Medical Subject HeadingsU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021

Interstitial lung diseases are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by alveolar septal thickening, fibroblast proliferation, collagen deposition, and, if the process remains unchecked, pulmonary fibrosis. Interstitial lung diseases can be classified using various criteria (eg, acute vs chronic, granulomatous vs...Merck & Co., Inc., 2020

Interstitial (in-tur-STISH-ul) lung disease describes a large group of disorders, most of which cause progressive scarring of lung tissue. The scarring associated with interstitial lung disease eventually affects your ability to breathe and get enough oxygen into your bloodstream.Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research

Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) are a large group of disorders characterized by thickening of the walls between the alveoli, increased production and buildup of collagen, and pulmonary fibrosis (progressive scarring of lung tissue). The scarring eventually affects the ability to breathe and get enough oxygen into the bloodstream....National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences
