MDS
Definitions related to myelodysplastic syndrome:
-
A clonal hematopoietic disorder characterized by dysplasia and ineffective hematopoiesis in one or more of the hematopoietic cell lines. The dysplasia may be accompanied by an increase in myeloblasts, but the number is less than 20%, which, according to the WHO guidelines, is the requisite threshold for the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia. It may occur de novo or as a result of exposure to alkylating agents and/or radiotherapy. (WHO, 2001)NCI ThesaurusU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
A pre-malignant disorder characterized by blood cytopenias and abnormalities in bone marrow morphology.NICHD Pediatric TerminologyU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
A group of diseases in which the bone marrow does not make enough healthy blood cells.NCI Dictionary of Cancer TermsU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
Clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorders characterized by dysplasia in one or more hematopoietic cell lineages. They predominantly affect patients over 60, are considered preleukemic conditions, and have high probability of transformation into ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA.NLM Medical Subject HeadingsU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021

Your bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside some of your bones, such as your hip and thigh bones. It contains immature cells, called stem cells. The stem cells can develop into the red blood cells that carry oxygen through your body, the white blood cells that fight infections, and the platelets that help with blood clotting. If you have a myelodysplastic syndrome, the stem cells do not mature into healthy blood cells. Many of them die in the bone marrow. This means that you do not have enough healthy cells, which can lead to infection, anemia, or easy bleeding. Myelodysplastic syndromes often do not cause early symptoms and are sometimes found during a routine blood test. If you have symptoms, they may include Shortness of breath; Weakness or feeling tired; Skin that is paler than usual; Easy bruising or bleeding; Pinpoint spots under the skin caused by bleeding; Fever or frequent infections. Myelodysplastic syndromes are rare. People at higher risk are over 60, have had chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or have been exposed to certain chemicals. Treatment options include transfusions, drug therapy, chemotherapy, and blood or bone marrow stem cell transplants. NIH: National Cancer InstituteMedlinePlusU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021

A disorder characterized by insufficiently healthy hematapoietic cell production by the bone marrow.Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse EventsU.S. National Institutes of Health, 2021

The myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is group of disorders typified by peripheral cytopenia, dysplastic hematopoietic progenitors, a hypercellular or hypocellular bone marrow, and a high risk of conversion to acute myeloid leukemia. Symptoms are referable to the specific cell line most affected and may include fatigue, weakness, pallor...Merck & Co., Inc., 2020

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) refers to a heterogeneous group of closely related clonal hematopoietic disorders. All are characterized by a hypercellular or hypocellular marrow with impaired morphology and maturation (dysmyelopoiesis) and peripheral blood cytopenias, resulting from ineffective blood cell production.WebMD, 2019
-
Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of disorders caused by poorly formed blood cells or ones that don't work properly. Myelodysplastic syndromes result from something amiss in the spongy material inside your bones where blood cells are made (bone marrow).Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research
-
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of blood disorders characterized by abnormal development of blood cells within the bone marrow. People with MDS have abnormally low blood cell levels (low blood counts). Signs and symptoms may include dizziness, fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, bruising and bleeding, frequent infections,...National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences
-
Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a group of clonal stem cell disorders, characterized by ineffective and dysplastic hematopoiesis resulting in 1 or more cytopenias, and a varying predilection to develop acute myeloid leukemia (AML). MDS is diagnosed when bone marrow demonstrates significant dysplasia, clonal cytogenetic abnormality,...Athenahealth, Inc., 2019
