respiratory burst
Subclass of:
Cell Respiration
Definitions related to respiratory burst:
-
(oxidative burst) A process that consists of the rapid release of reactive oxygen species. The process frequently ocurrs in cells when superoxide radical and hydrogen peroxide species are released.NCI ThesaurusU.S. National Cancer Institute, 2021
-
A large increase in oxygen uptake by neutrophils and most types of tissue macrophages through activation of an NADPH-cytochrome b-dependent oxidase that reduces oxygen to a superoxide. Individuals with an inherited defect in which the oxidase that reduces oxygen to superoxide is decreased or absent (GRANULOMATOUS DISEASE, CHRONIC) often die as a result of recurrent bacterial infections.NLM Medical Subject HeadingsU.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021
-
(leukocyte oxidative burst) Large increase in oxygen uptake by neutrophils and most types of tissue macrophages through activation of an NADPH/cytochrome b-dependent oxidase that reduces oxygen to a superoxide.CRISP ThesaurusNational Institutes of Health, 2006
-
(respiratory burst after phagocytosis) A phase of elevated metabolic activity, during which oxygen consumption increases, that occurs in neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages shortly after phagocytosing material. An enhanced uptake of oxygen leads to the production, by an NADH dependent system, of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals, which play a part in microbiocidal activity.Gene Ontology DictionaryGene Ontology Consortium, 2021
