BACKGROUND
Research on intelligent tongue diagnosis is a main direction in the modernization of tongue diagnosis technology. Identification of tongue shape and texture features is a difficult task for tongue diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). This study aimed to explore the application of deep learning techniques in tongue image analyses.
METHODS
A total of 8676 tongue images were annotated by clinical experts, into seven categories, including the fissured tongue, tooth-marked tongue, stasis tongue, spotted tongue, greasy coating, peeled coating, and rotten coating. Based on the labeled tongue images, the deep learning model faster region-based convolutional neural networks (Faster R-CNN) was utilized to classify tongue images. Four performance indices, i.e., accuracy, recall, precision, and F1-score, were selected to evaluate the model. Also, we applied it to analyze tongue image features of 3601 medical checkup participants in order to explore gender and age factors and the correlations among tongue features in diseases through complex networks.
RESULTS
The average accuracy, recall, precision, and F1-score of our model achieved 90.67%, 91.25%, 99.28%, and 95.00%, respectively. Over the tongue images from the medical checkup population, the model Faster R-CNN detected 41.49% fissured tongue images, 37.16% tooth-marked tongue images, 29.66% greasy coating images, 18.66% spotted tongue images, 9.97% stasis tongue images, 3.97% peeled coating images, and 1.22% rotten coating images. There were significant differences in the incidence of the fissured tongue, tooth-marked tongue, spotted tongue, and greasy coating among age and gender. Complex networks revealed that fissured tongue and tooth-marked were closely related to hypertension, dyslipidemia, overweight and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and a greasy coating tongue was associated with hypertension and overweight.
CONCLUSION
The model Faster R-CNN shows good performance in the tongue image classification. And we have preliminarily revealed the relationship between tongue features and gender, age, and metabolic diseases in a medical checkup population.

The Evolving Role of Marked Lymph Node Biopsy (MLNB) and Targeted Axillary Dissection (TAD) after Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy (NACT) for Node-Positive Breast Cancer: Systematic Review and Pooled Analysis.
Targeted axillary dissection (TAD) is a new axillary staging technique that consists of the surgical removal of biopsy-proven positive axillary nodes, which are marked (marked lymph node biopsy (MLNB)) prior to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in addition to the sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). In a meta-analysis of more than 3000 patients, we previously reported a false-negative rate (FNR) of 13% using the SLNB alone in this setting. The aim of this systematic review and pooled analysis is to determine the FNR of MLNB alone and TAD (MLNB plus SLNB) compared with the gold standard of complete axillary lymph node dissection (cALND). The PubMed, Cochrane and Google Scholar databases were searched using MeSH-relevant terms and free words. A total of 9 studies of 366 patients that met the inclusion criteria evaluating the FNR of MLNB alone were included in the pooled analysis, yielding a pooled FNR of 6.28% (95% CI: 3.98-9.43). In 13 studies spanning 521 patients, the addition of SLNB to MLNB (TAD) was associated with a FNR of 5.18% (95% CI: 3.41-7.54), which was not significantly different from that of MLNB alone ( = 0.48). Data regarding the oncological safety of this approach were lacking. In a separate analysis of all published studies reporting successful identification and surgical retrieval of the MLN, we calculated a pooled success rate of 90.0% (95% CI: 85.1-95.1). The present pooled analysis demonstrates that the FNR associated with MLNB alone or combined with SLNB is acceptably low and both approaches are highly accurate in staging the axilla in patients with node-positive breast cancer after NACT. The SLNB adds minimal new information and therefore can be safely omitted from TAD. Further research to confirm the oncological safety of this de-escalation approach of axillary surgery is required. MLNB alone and TAD are associated with acceptably low FNRs and represent valid alternatives to cALND in patients with node-positive breast cancer after excellent response to NACT.

When forming the radar situation of a terrain, in order to increase its information content and to extract useful information, multi-position spatially distributed systems for integrating multi-angle radar data established by small-sized UAV-based airborne radars are used. In this case, each radar station belonging to a multi-position system as a probing signal must have its own unique marked signal. Such a setup will allow the signals reflected from ground objects and zones to be "attached" to specific receiving-transmitting positions of the multi-position system. This requirement results from the fact that each transceiver position emits one probing signal, and then receives all the echo signals reflected from the underlying surface and previously emitted by other radar devices of the multi-position system. Such a setup of multi-position systems requires the researcher to look for and investigate specialized systems of marked code structures used to modulate the probing signals in order to identify them in a joint radar channel. Thus, the problem at hand is how to look for and investigate novel marked code structures used to generate a system of probing signals, the use of which will allow it to be "attached" to a specific receiving-transmitting position of a multi-position onboard system and to identify them in a joint radar channel in the course of the remote sensing of the underlying surface. The purpose of this work is to conduct a study on the subject of the squeak and choice of a system of code structures that have a low level of side lobes of autocorrelation functions and uniformly distributed values of the levels of the cross-correlation function. To achieve this goal, the relevance of the study is substantiated in the introduction. The second section analyzes the level of side lobes for classical and modified Barker codes with an asymmetric alphabet. On the basis of this analysis, it was concluded that it is expedient to apply this approach for codes longer than Barker codes. Therefore, in the third section, the features of the generation of M-sequences are considered. The fourth section presents a technique for searching for new marked code structures, taking into account their mutual correlation properties for modifying M-sequences in order to implement multi-positional systems. The fifth section presents computer experiments on the search for marked code structures based on the modifications of M-sequences and presents the numerical characteristics of the correlation properties of the considered marked codes. And finally, in the sixth section, the final conclusions of the study are presented and recommendations are given for their further practical application. The practical significance of this study lies in the fact that the proposed new marked code structures are necessary for the synthesis of probing signals in the implementation of spatially distributed systems that function for the high-probability detection and high-precision determination of the coordinates of physical objects and are also necessary for the formation of radar images in a multi-position mode.

Preoperatively, the surgeon instills two drops of 0.5% proparacaine and then marks the 0° and 180° points at the limbus using a Gentian violet marker and 26G needle edge. Intraoperatively, after phacoemulsification and irrigation and aspiration of the cortex are complete, the surgeon inspects the previously marked 0°-180° points on the limbus. In case the steeper astigmatic meridian needs to be marked, a Mendez Ring is used and the meridian is marked using a Gentian violet marker and 26G needle edge. The desired markings (2 mm in length only) on the anterior lens capsule can be made using 26G needle bent at the bevel or using micro-vitreoretinal scissors. The toric intraocular lens (IOL) is then rotated in the bag in the desired meridian (customized-toric IOL in 0°-180° meridian and noncustomized toric IOL in steeper marked meridian), viscoelastic substance is aspirated and corneal wounds are hydrated.

TorsinA is an atypical ATPase that lacks intrinsic activity unless it is bound to its activators lamina-associated polypeptide 1 (LAP1) in the perinuclear space or luminal domain-like LAP1 (LULL1) throughout the endoplasmic reticulum. However, the interaction of torsinA with LAP1 and LULL1 has not yet been shown to modulate a defined physiological process in mammals . We previously demonstrated that depletion of torsinA from mouse hepatocytes leads to reduced liver triglyceride secretion and marked steatosis, whereas depletion of LAP1 had more modest similar effects. We now show that depletion of LULL1 alone does not significantly decrease liver triglyceride secretion or cause steatosis. However, simultaneous depletion of both LAP1 and LULL1 from hepatocytes leads to defective triglyceride secretion and marked steatosis similar to that observed with depletion of torsinA. Our results demonstrate that torsinA and its activators dynamically regulate a physiological process in mammals .

H4K20me1 (histone H4 monomethylated at lysine 20) generally has a broad distribution along genes and has been reported to be associated with expressed and repressed genes. In contrast, H3K4me3 (histone H3 trimethylated at lysine 4) is positioned as a narrow peak at the 5' end of most expressed genes in vertebrate cells. A small population of genes involved in cell identity has H3K4me3 distributed throughout the gene body. In this report, we show that H4K20me1 is associated with expressed genes in estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer MCF7 cells and erythroleukemic K562 cells. Further, we identified the genes with the broadest H4K20me1 domains in these two cell types. The broad H4K20me1 domain marked gene bodies of expressed genes, but not the promoter or enhancer regions. The most significant GO term (biological processes) of these genes was cytoplasmic translation. There was little overlap between the genes marked with the broad H4K20me1 domain and those marked with H3K4me3. H4K20me1 and H3K79me2 distributions along expressed gene bodies were similar, suggesting a relationship between the enzymes catalyzing these histone modifications.

Eye and head movements are used to scan the environment when driving. In particular, when approaching an intersection, large gaze scans to the left and right, comprising head and multiple eye movements, are made. We detail an algorithm called the gaze scan algorithm that automatically quantifies the magnitude, duration, and composition of such large lateral gaze scans. The algorithm works by first detecting lateral saccades, then merging these lateral saccades into gaze scans, with the start and end points of each gaze scan marked in time and eccentricity. We evaluated the algorithm by comparing gaze scans generated by the algorithm to manually marked "consensus ground truth" gaze scans taken from gaze data collected in a high-fidelity driving simulator. We found that the gaze scan algorithm successfully marked 96% of gaze scans and produced magnitudes and durations close to ground truth. Furthermore, the differences between the algorithm and ground truth were similar to the differences found between expert coders. Therefore, the algorithm may be used in lieu of manual marking of gaze data, significantly accelerating the time-consuming marking of gaze movement data in driving simulator studies. The algorithm also complements existing eye tracking and mobility research by quantifying the number, direction, magnitude, and timing of gaze scans and can be used to better understand how individuals scan their environment.

Accidents with venomous bees are a serious worldwide health concern. Since the kidney has been reported as the main venom-target organ, the present study was undertaken to investigate the in vivo nephrotoxic effect of Algerian bee venom (ABV) (Apis mellifera intermissa) collected in the middle east of Algeria. A preliminary study was performed on ABV to identify the ABV using SDS-PAGE analysis and to determine the in vivo intraperitoneal median lethal dose (LD50) using the Probit analysis test. In vivo nephrotoxic effect was assessed through the determination of physiological and kidney biochemical markers in mice intraperitoneally injected with ABV at doses of 0.76 (D1); 1.14 (D2) and 2.29 mg/kg body weight (bwt) (D3), corresponding respectively to LD50/15, LD50/10, and LD50/5 (i.p. LD50=11.48 mg/kg bwt) for seven consecutive days. Results revealed a marked decrease in body weight gain and food intake, and an increase in absolute and relative kidney weights in ABV D2 and D3 treated mice compared with controls. Furthermore, ABV D2 and D3 resulted in a significant increase in serum creatinine, urea, and uric acid. ABV-induced oxidative stress was evidenced by a significant increase in kidney MDA level, and a significant depletion in kidney GSH level, and catalase activity. Meanwhile, no marked changes in the above-mentioned parameters were noticed in ABV D1. Accordingly, the adverse nephrotoxic effect of ABV was proved by the dose-dependent kidney histological changes. In summary, the results of the present study evidence that ABV at doses of 1.14 (D2) and 2.28 mg/kg body weight (bwt) can cause marked changes in kidney biochemical and major antioxidant markers, and histological architecture.

The main goal of this paper was to disentangle encoding and retrieval interference effects in anaphor processing and thus to evaluate the hypothesis predicting that structurally inaccessible nouns (distractors) are not considered to be potential anaphor antecedents during language processing (Nicol and Swinney, 1989). Three self-paced reading experiments were conducted: one in German, comparing gender-unmarked reflexives and gender-marked pronouns, and two in Russian, comparing gender-marked and -unmarked reflexives. In the German experiment, no interference effects were found. In the first experiment in Russian, an unexpected reading times pattern emerged: in the condition where the distractor matched the gender of the reflexive's antecedent, reading of the gender-unmarked, but not the gender-marked reflexives was slowed down. The same reading times pattern was replicated in a second experiment in Russian where the order of the reflexive and the main verb was inverted. We conclude that the results of the two experiments in Russian are inconsistent with the retrieval interference account, but can be explained by encoding interference and additional semantic processing efforts associated with the processing of gender-marked reflexives. In sum, we found no evidence that would allow us to reject the syntax as an early filer account (Nicol and Swinney, 1989).

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of permanent, but not unchanging, disorders of movement and/or posture and motor function. Since the major brain injury associated with CP is white matter injury (WMI), especially, in preterm infants, we established a "multi-hit" rat model to mimic human WMI in symptomatology and at a histological level. In our WMI model, pups suffering from limb paresis, incoordination, and direction difficulties fit the performance of CP. Histologically, they present with fewer neural cells, inordinate fibers, and more inflammatory cell infiltration, compared to the control group. From the electron microscopy results, we spotted neuronal apoptosis, glial activation, and myelination delay. Besides, the abundant appearance of IBA1-labeled microglia also implied that microglia play a role during neuronal cell injury. After activation, microglia shift between the pro-inflammatory M1 type and the anti-inflammatory M2 type. The results showed that LPS/infection stimulated IBA1 + (marked activated microglia) expression, downregulated CD11c + (marked M1 phenotype), and upregulated Arg 1 + (marked M2 phenotype) protein expression. It indicated an M1 to M2 transition after multiple infections. In summary, we established a "multi-hit" WMI-induced CP rat model and demonstrated that the microglial activation correlates tightly with CP formation, which may become a potential target for future studies.
