Review
BACKGROUND
Digital technologies, especially contact tracing apps, have been crucial in monitoring and tracing the transmission of COVID-19 worldwide. China developed health code apps as an emergency response to the pandemic with plans to use them for broader public health services. However, potential problems within privacy policies may compromise personal information (PI) protection.
OBJECTIVE
We aimed to evaluate the compliance of the privacy policies of 30 health code apps in the mainland of China with the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) and related specifications.
METHODS
We reviewed and assessed the privacy policies of 30 health code apps between August 26 and September 6, 2023. We used a 3-level indicator scale based on the information life cycle as provided in the PIPL and related specifications. The scale comprised 7 level-1 indicators, 26 level-2 indicators, and 71 level-3 indicators.
RESULTS
The mean compliance score of the 30 health code apps was 59.9% (SD 22.6%). A total of 13 (43.3%) apps scored below this average, and 6 apps scored below 40%. Level-1 indicator scores included the following: general attributes (mean 85.6%, SD 23.3%); PI collection and use (mean 66.2%, SD 22.7%); PI storage and protection (mean 63.3%, SD 30.8%); PI sharing, transfer, disclosure, and transmission (mean 57.2%, SD 27.3%); PI deletion (mean 52.2%, SD 29.4%); individual rights (mean 59.3%, SD 25.7%); and PI processor duties (mean 43.7%, SD 23.8%). Sensitive PI protection compliance (mean 51.4%, SD 26.0%) lagged behind general PI protection (mean 83.3%, SD 24.3%), with only 1 app requiring separate consent for sensitive PI processing. Additionally, 46.7% (n=14) of the apps needed separate consent for subcontracting activities, while fewer disclosed PI recipient information (n=13, 43.3%), safety precautions (n=11, 36.7%), and rules of PI transfer during specific events (n=10, 33.3%). Most privacy policies specified the PI retention period (n=23, 76.7%) and postperiod deletion or anonymization (n=22, 73.3%), but only 6.7% (n=2) were committed to prompt third-party PI deletion. Most apps delineated various individual rights: the right to inquire (n=25, 83.3%), correct (n=24, 80%), and delete PI (n=24, 80%); cancel their account (n=21, 70%); withdraw consent (n=20, 60%); and request privacy policy explanations (n=24, 80%). Only a fraction addressed the rights to obtain copies (n=4, 13.3%) or refuse advertisement of automated decision-making (n=1, 3.3%). The mean compliance rate of PI processor duties was only 43.7% (SD 23.8%), with significant deficiencies in impact assessments (mean 5.0%, SD 19.8%), PI protection officer appointment (mean 6.7%, SD 24.9%), regular compliance audits (mean 6.7%, SD 24.9%), and complaint management (mean 37.8%, SD 39.2%).
CONCLUSIONS
Our analysis revealed both strengths and significant shortcomings in the compliance of privacy policies of health code apps with the PIPL and related specifications considering the information life cycle. As China contemplates the future extended use of health code apps, it should articulate the legitimacy of the apps' normalization and ensure that users provide informed consent. Meanwhile, China should raise the compliance level of relevant privacy policies and fortify its enforcement mechanisms.

Pepper fruits (Capsicum annuum) are economically important commodities worldwide due to their unique sensory profiles and rich antioxidant properties. With ongoing research efforts in optimizing the production and processing of peppers, there is a need for a standardized tool to evaluate the quality of peppers and pepper products. The objective of this work was to develop a sensory lexicon to characterize fresh and preserved peppers. A panel of 10 volunteers was recruited and trained in quantitative descriptive sensory analysis for a total of 37 h. Commercially available fresh, pickled, and roasted peppers were used to establish definitions, methods of evaluation, and reference materials for each unique attribute; and attribute intensities were scored on a scale ranging from 0 to 15. Commercially available fresh and preserved pepper samples (n = 22) were evaluated by the panel in duplicate to validate the lexicon. Principal component analysis was used to visualize differences among the products, and attribute redundancies were evaluated through analysis of correlations. This lexicon with 46 clearly defined terms that describe fresh, pickled, and roasted pepper products is comprised of 14 aroma, 19 flavor, 9 texture, and 4 chemesthetic attributes. Smoky, burnt, and cooked tomato flavors were typical of roasted red bell peppers, while the floral attribute was characteristic of fresh red bell peppers, and vinegar, pungency, and spicy notes characterized pickled peppers. The lexicon enabled the characterization and differentiation of a wide range of pepper products and lays the framework for quality evaluation and product improvement. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Breeders and processors are seeking technologies that ensure desirable quality of fresh and processed peppers for an extended shelf life. This sensory lexicon comprised of 14 aroma, 19 flavor, 9 texture, and 4 chemesthetic attributes serves as a basis for evaluating various strategies toward quality improvement, such as novel processing of pepper products.

The quantum Hall effect, fundamental in modern condensed matter physics, continuously inspires new theories and predicts emergent phases of matter. Here we experimentally demonstrate three types of Chern insulators with synthetic dimensions on a programable 30-qubit-ladder superconducting processor. We directly measure the band structures of the 2D Chern insulator along synthetic dimensions with various configurations of Aubry-André-Harper chains and observe dynamical localisation of edge excitations. With these two signatures of topology, our experiments implement the bulk-edge correspondence in the synthetic 2D Chern insulator. Moreover, we simulate two different bilayer Chern insulators on the ladder-type superconducting processor. With the same and opposite periodically modulated on-site potentials for two coupled chains, we simulate topologically nontrivial edge states with zero Hall conductivity and a Chern insulator with higher Chern numbers, respectively. Our work shows the potential of using superconducting qubits for investigating different intriguing topological phases of quantum matter.

Review
Pyramidal neurons have a pivotal role in the cognitive capabilities of neocortex. Though they have been predominantly modeled as integrate-and-fire point processors, many of them have another point of input integration in their apical dendrites that is central to mechanisms endowing them with the sensitivity to context that underlies basic cognitive capabilities. Here we review evidence implicating impairments of those mechanisms in three major neurodevelopmental disabilities, fragile X, Down syndrome, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Multiple dysfunctions of the mechanisms by which pyramidal cells are sensitive to context are found to be implicated in all three syndromes. Further deciphering of these cellular mechanisms would lead to the understanding of and therapies for learning disabilities beyond any that are currently available.

Standard cell therapy equipment, including the gold standard cell processor to purify human islets for clinical transplantation, is rarely refrigerated, potentially exposing cells to elevated temperatures during the centrifugation step. Custom cooling systems have a direct benefit on human islet viability and function. The current study was designed to test the effectiveness of a newly developed, readily available cooled cell processor system requiring minimal modifications and to evaluate its impact on human cell viability and the GMP cleanroom environment. The cooler system, a mechanically refrigerated heat exchanger set at -30 °C was used to deliver cooled medical grade dry air to the cell processor bowl through a hole drilled in the centrifuge cover. With the limited availability of pancreas donors in Qatar, system validation was done with continuous density gradient purification of pooled human bone marrow buffy coat. Sterility, turbulence, and particle count were measured in class C and class B clean room environments. No turbulence developed around the cooled cell processor, and no excess 0.5 µm and 5 µm airborne particulates were generated as per cleanroom GMP standards. At the beginning and end of the collection steps, the temperature rose respectively to 21.50 °C ± 0.34 °C and 21.93 °C ± 0.20 °C in the non-cooled cell processor and to only 10.9 °C ± 0.17 °C and 11.16 °C ± 0.35 °C in the cooled- cell processor (p <0.05). The cooled cell processor led to both improved recovery (98%) of the mononuclear cell fraction and viability (100% ± 2%) post-processing. The new cooling system effectively reduces the heat produced by the cell processor while having no particulate impact on the GMP clean room environment. The cooled cell processor described here is an inexpensive ($16,000 without including taxes, customs clearance, and transportation) and minimally invasive method to provide robust cooling. Currently, this technology in the GMP cell therapy facility is being applied to human islet cell isolation and transplantation for the clinical program.

The modeling of distracted driving behavior has been studied for many years, however, there remain many distraction phenomena that can not be fully modeled. This study proposes a new method that establishes the model using the queuing network model human processor (QN-MHP) framework. Unlike previous models that only consider distracted-driving-related human factors from a mathematical perspective, the proposed method reflects the information processing in the human brain, and simulates the distracted driver's cognitive processes based on a model structure supported by physiological and cognitive research evidence. Firstly, a cumulative activation effect model for external stimuli is adopted to mimic the phenomenon that a driver responds only to stimuli above a certain threshold. Then, dual-task queuing and switching mechanisms are modeled to reflect the cognitive resource allocation under distraction. Finally, the driver's action is modeled by the Intelligent Driver Model (IDM). The model is developed for visual distraction auditory distraction separately. 773 distracted car-following events from the Shanghai Naturalistic Driving Study data were used to calibrate and verify the model. Results show that the model parameters are more uniform and reasonable. Meanwhile, the model accuracy has improved by 57% and 66% compared to the two baseline models respectively. Moreover, the model demonstrates its ability to generate critical pre-crash scenarios and estimate the crash rate of distracted driving. The proposed model is expected to contribute to safety research regarding new vehicle technologies and traffic safety analysis.

This paper presents a reconfigurable near-sensor anomaly detection processor to real-time monitor the potential anomalous behaviors of amputees with limb prostheses. The processor is low-power, low-latency, and suitable for equipment on the prostheses and comprises a reconfigurable Variational Autoencoder (VAE), a scalable Self-Organizing Map (SOM) Array, and a window-size-adjustable Markov Chain, which can implement an integrated miniaturized anomaly detection system. With the reconfigurable VAE, the proposed processor can support up to 64 sensor sampling channels programmable by global configuration, which can meet the anomaly detection requirements in different scenarios. A scalable SOM array allows for the selection of different sizes based on the complexity of the data. Unlike traditional time accumulation-based anomaly detection methods, the Markov Chain is utilized to detect time-series-based anomalous data. The processor is designed and fabricated in a UMC 40-nm LP technology with a core area of 1.49 mm and a power consumption of 1.81 mW. It achieves real-time detection performance with 0.933 average F1 Score for the FSP dataset within 24.22 μs, and 0.956 average F1 Score for the SFDLA-12 dataset within 30.48 μs, respectively. The energy dissipation of detection for each input feature is 43.84 nJ with the FSP dataset, and 55.17 nJ with the SFDLA-12 dataset. Compared with ARM Cortex-M4 and ARM Cortex-M33 microcontrollers, the processor achieves energy and area efficiency improvements ranging from 257×, 193× and 11×, 8×, respectively.

Pancreas is one of the most challenging organs for Computed Tomograph (CT) image automatic segmentation due to its complex shapes and fuzzy edges. It is simple and universal to use the traditional segmentation method as a post-processor of deep learning method for segmentation accuracy improvement. As the most suitable traditional segmentation method for pancreatic segmentation, the active contour model (ACM), still suffers from the problems of weak boundary leakage and slow contour evolution speed. Therefore, a convenient post-processor for any deep learning methods using superpixel-based active contour model (SbACM) is proposed to improve the segmentation accuracy.Firstly, the superpixels with strong adhesion to edges are used to guide the design of narrowband and energy function. A multi-scale evolution strategy is also proposed to reduce the weak boundary leakage and comprehensively improve the evolution speed. Secondly, using the original image and the coarse segmentation results obtained from deep learning methods as inputs, the proposed SbACM method is used as a post-processor for fine segmentation. Finally, the pancreatic segmentation public dataset TCIA from the National Institutes of Health(NIH, USA) is used for evaluation, and the Wilcoxon Test confirmed that the improvement of proposed method is statistically significant.(1) the superpixel-based narrowband shape and dynamic edge energy of the proposed SbACM work for boundary leakage reduction, as well as the multi-scale evolution strategy and dynamic narrowband width for the evolution speed improvement; (2) as a post-processor, SbACM can increase the Dice similarity coefficients (DSC) of five typical UNet-based models, including UNet, SS-UNet, PBR UNet, ResDSN, and nnUNet, 2.35% in average and 9.04% in maximum. (3) Based on the best backbone nnUNet, the proposed post-processor performs better than either adding edge awareness or adding edge loss in segmentation enhancement without increasing the complexity and training time of deep learning models. The proposed SbACM can improve segmentation accuracy with the lowest cost, especially in cases of squeezed fuzzy edges with similar neighborhood , and complex edges.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) collaboration has become the main means of indoor and outdoor regional search, railway patrol, and other tasks, and navigation planning is one of the key, albeit difficult, technologies. The purpose of UAV navigation planning is to plan reasonable trajectories for UAVs to avoid obstacles and reach the task area. Essentially, it is a complex optimization problem that requires the use of navigation planning algorithms to search for path-point solutions that meet the requirements under the guide of objective functions and constraints. At present, there are autonomous navigation modes of UAVs relying on airborne sensors and navigation control modes of UAVs relying on ground control stations (GCSs). However, due to the limitation of airborne processor computing power, and background command and control communication delay, a navigation planning method that takes into account accuracy and timeliness is needed. First, the navigation planning architecture of UAVs of end-cloud collaboration was designed. Then, the background cloud navigation planning algorithm of UAVs was designed based on the improved particle swarm optimization (PSO). Next, the navigation control algorithm of the UAV terminals was designed based on the multi-objective hybrid swarm intelligent optimization algorithm. Finally, the computer simulation and actual indoor-environment flight test based on small rotor UAVs were designed and conducted. The results showed that the proposed method is correct and feasible, and can improve the effectiveness and efficiency of navigation planning of UAVs.

To investigate the postoperative long-term outcomes after an average of 9.2 years following cochlear implantation (CI) in prelingually deafened adults, along with preimplantation factors predicting postoperative outcomes. Twenty-six prelingually deafened adults who underwent CI at >18 years were compared with those who had undergone CI in childhood (<9 years) and were >10 years old. Outcome measures includedhearing thresholds, preoperative and postoperative aided hearing level (HL), speech discrimination score (SDS), and Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP) scores. Correlation analyses were performed on the following: SDS results, aided HL, school attendant status, implant manufacturers, and speech processor models. Improvement was achieved in the aided HL and SDS results, although these results were not better than those of the child group. CAP score was also statistically significantly improved after CI. Statistically significant correlation between the preoperative SDS and postoperative HL with CI results was observed. In other words, the better the preoperative SDS results, the better the postoperative SDS results. Prelingually deafened adults achieved considerable improvement through CI. It is important to understand that patients achieving better hearing with a well-fitted hearing aid and good SDS performance before surgery may be good candidates for CI.
