Peritonitis, a serious complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD), can be caused by opportunistic pathogens like Micrococcus species on rare occasions. We present a case of Micrococcus sp peritonitis in a 55-year-old female with end-stage kidney disease on continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis for one year who presented with cloudy effluent. Initial treatment against Micrococcus sp with vancomycin, gentamicin, and prophylactic oral nystatin was successful. However, one month later, the patient presented with abdominal pain and dialysate culture again grew Micrococcus sp. Treatment with vancomycin was unsuccessful in resolving culture positivity. The patient was transitioned to hemodialysis for non-medical reasons and then was later restarted on PD without further peritonitis episodes. Micrococcus sp peritonitis in PD poses treatment challenges due to limited guidelines. Intraperitoneal vancomycin is commonly used to target Micrococcus isolates although there is a high incidence of treatment failure. This case report highlights the need for continued reporting to enhance identification, prevention, and patient outcomes in Micrococcus sp peritonitis during PD.

The present study used Cr(VI)-polluted microcosms amended with lactate or yeast extract, and nonamended microcosms as control, to investigate how a native bacterial community varied in response to the treatment and during the pollutant removal. Results suggested that providing electron donors resulted in a proliferation of a few bacterial species, with the consequent decrease in observed species richness and evenness, and was a driving force for the bacterial compositional shift. Lactate promoted, in the first instance, the enrichment of fermentative bacteria belonging to Chromobacteriaceae, including Paludibacterium, and Micrococcaceae as observed after 4 days. When the rate of Cr(VI) removal was maximum in microcosms amended with lactate, the most represented taxa were Pseudarcicella and Azospirillum. Using yeast extract as a carbon source and electron donor led instead to the significant enrichment of Shewanella, followed by Vogesella and Acinetobacter on the 4th day, corresponding to 90% of Cr(VI) removed from the system. After the complete Cr(VI) removal, achieved in 7 days in the presence of yeast extract, α-diversity was notably increased. The amendment-specific turnover of the enriched bacterial taxa resulted in a different kinetic of pollutant removal. In particular, yeast extract promoted the quickest Cr(VI) reduction, while lactate supported a slower, but also considerable, pollutant removal from water. Since it is reasonable to assume that a macroscopic effect, such as the observed Cr(VI) removal, involved the overrepresented taxa, deepening the knowledge of the native bacterial community and its changes were used to hypothesize the possible microbial pathways involved.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the microbiological quality and safety of 37 fresh quail meats. Mesophiles, spp., , and staphylococci counts were 5.25 ± 1.14, 3.92 ± 1.17, 3.09 ± 1.02, and 2.80 ± 0.64 log CFU/g, respectively. was detected in seven samples (18.92%). was detected in one sample (2.70%). was not detected in any sample. The dominant bacteria were spp. (30.46%), (19.87%), lactic acid bacteria (14.57%), and (11.92%). and enterococci were isolated to a lesser extent, 7.28% and 1.99%, respectively. The dominant found were (42.53%). ESBL-producing was detected in one sample (2.70%), showing resistance to 16 antibiotics. Sixteen different spp. and three spp. were identified, the most common being (19.86%) and (17.02%). and were also found in one and four samples, respectively. Methicillin-resistant and were found in 13.51% and 10.81% of quail samples, respectively. These bacteria showed an average of 6.20 and 18.50 resistances per strain, respectively. The high resistance observed in ESBL-producing and methicillin-resistant is of special concern. Measures should be adopted to reduce the contamination of quail meat.

The vaginal tract comprises commensal microorganisms, which play an essential role in the health of the reproductive tract. Any dysbiosis in the vaginal microenvironment may lead to severe urinary tract infections or even infertility. This study aimed to evaluate the aerobic bacterial flora isolated from vaginal samples from 100 lactating bitches in the antepartum period ( = 3), postpartum period ( = 80), and with ( = 17). Before vaginal swabs, all the bitches went through a gynecology consult, along with milk and blood sampling. Standard microbiological techniques were used for bacterial isolation. Among the 100 vaginal samples analyzed, 82% had a positive microbiological outcome, while 18% were negative. The microbiologic profile listed 17 different genera. The main isolated bacterial families were Micrococcaceae, Staphylococcaceae, Morganellaceae, Bacillaceae, and Rhizobiaceae. At the same time, strains like , , , , , or were isolated for the first time from the vaginal secretion of lactating bitches. The microbiological data demonstrates that lactating bitches' vaginal discharge is heterogeneous and may be affected by coitus, sampling season, age, and reproductive status.

The widespread occurrence of sulfonamides raises significant concerns about the evolution and spread of antibiotic resistance genes. Biodegradation represents not only a resistance mechanism but also a clean-up strategy. Meanwhile, dynamic and diverse environments could influence the cellular function of individual sulfonamide-degrading strains. Here, we present Paenarthrobacter from different origins that demonstrated diverse growth patterns and sulfonamide-degrading abilities. Generally, the degradation performance was largely associated with the number of sadA gene copies and also relied on its genotype. Based on the survey of sad genes in the public database, an independent mobilization of transposon-borne genes between chromosome and plasmid was observed. Insertions of multiple sadA genes could greatly enhance sulfonamide-degrading performance. Moreover, the sad gene cluster and sadA transposable element showed phylogenetic conservation currently, being identified only in two genera of Paenarthrobacter (Micrococcaceae) and Microbacterium (Microbacteriaceae). Meanwhile, Paenarthrobacter exhibited a high capacity for genome editing to adapt to the specific environmental niche, opening up new opportunities for bioremediation applications.

The residential kitchen is often heavily colonized by microbes originating from different sources, including food and human contact. Although a few studies have reported the bacterial composition in cleaning utensils and surface samples there is limited knowledge of the bacterial diversity across different sample types, households, and countries. As part of a large European study, we have identified the microbiota of 302 samples from cleaning utensils (sponges and cloths), kitchen surfaces (sinks, cutting boards, countertops, tap handles, and a pooled sample of other handles) in 74 households across 5 countries (France, Hungary, Norway, Portugal, and Romania). In total, 31 bacterial phyla were identified, with , , , and being the most abundant. Despite large variations in households with respect to kitchen standards, kitchen practices, cleaning regimes, and diet and considerable differences in bacterial diversity between samples, eight bacterial genera/families commonly associated with environmental sources were identified in most samples and defined as a core microbiota: Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, , , , , , and Staphylococcus. These genera/families were also among the bacteria with the highest relative abundance across all samples, in addition to , , , and Streptococcus. Taxa associated with potential pathogens and fecal indicators were low in abundance but broadly distributed throughout the households. The microbial composition of surface samples indicated that the microbial composition on kitchen surfaces is more characteristic for the particular country than the object type, while the microbiota of cleaning utensils was similar across countries but differed between types (sponge or cloth). There is limited knowledge of the characteristics, differences, and similarities of the bacterial composition in residential kitchens. Here, we report the microbiota of cleaning utensils (sponges and cloths) and five different surface samples in 74 households across five European countries. In addition to increasing the knowledge of the kitchen microbiota from many geographical areas, this study identified a core microbiota in European residential kitchens despite large variations in kitchen practices and kitchen design and standards across countries and households.

We describe detection of the previously rarely reported gram-positive bacterium Auritidibacter ignavus in 3 cases of chronic ear infections in Germany. In all 3 cases, the patients had refractory otorrhea. Although their additional symptoms varied, all patients had an ear canal stenosis and A. ignavus detected in microbiologic swab specimens. A correct identification of A. ignavus in the clinical microbiology laboratory is hampered by the inability to identify it by using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Also, the bacterium might easily be overlooked because of its morphologic similarity to bacterial species of the resident skin flora. We conclude that a high index of suspicion is warranted to identify A. ignavus and that it should be particularly considered in patients with chronic external otitis who do not respond clinically to quinolone ear drop therapy.

BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) are common pollutants often found in former gasworks sites together with some other contaminants like indene, indane and naphthalene (Ie, Ia, N). This study aimed to evaluate the inhibitory or stimulative substrate interactions between BTEX, and Ie, Ia, N during aerobic biodegradation. For this, batch bottles, containing originally anaerobic subsurface sediments, groundwater and indigenous microorganisms from a contaminated former gasworks site, were spiked with various substrate combinations (BTEX, BTEXIe, BTEXIa, BTEXN, BTEXIeIa, BTEXIeN, BTEXIaN, BTEXIeIaN). Subsequently concentrations were monitored over time. For the BTEXIeIaN mixture, initial concentrations were between 1 and 5 mg L, and all compounds were completely degraded by the microbial consortia within 39 days of incubation. The experimental data were fitted to a first order kinetic degradation model for interpretation of inhibition/stimulation between the compounds. Results showed that indene, indane, and naphthalene inhibited the degradation of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, with benzene being the most affected. M/p-xylene is the only compound whose biodegradation is stimulated by the presence of indene and indane (individually or mixed) but inhibited by the presence of naphthalene. 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing revealed differentiation in the microbial communities within the batches with different substrate mixtures, especially within the two microbial groups Micrococcaceae and Commamonaceae. Indene had more effect on the BTEX microbial community than indane or naphthalene and the presence of indene increased the relative abundance of Micrococcaceae family. In conclusion, co-presence of various pollutants leads to differentiation in degradation processes as well as in microbial community development. This sheds some light on the underlying reasons for that organic compounds present in mixtures in the subsurface of former gasworks sites are either recalcitrant or subjective towards biodegradation, and this understanding helps to further improve the bioremediation of such sites.

A study was undertaken to determine the effects of a strain of Arthrobacter sp., a Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria (PGPB), on plant phenology and qualitative composition of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. fruits and cladodes. The strain was inoculated in soil, and its effects on cactus pear plants were detected and compared to nontreated plants. Compared to the latter, the treatment with bacteria promoted an earlier plant sprouting (2 months before the control) and fruitification, ameliorating fruit quality (i.e., improved fresh and dry weight: + 24% and + 26%, respectively, increased total solid content by 30% and polyphenols concentrations by 22%). The quality and quantity of monosaccharides of cladodes were also increased by Arthrobacter sp. with a positive effect on their nutraceutical value. In summer, the mean values of xylose, arabinose, and mannose were significantly higher in treated compared to not treated plants (+ 3.54; + 7.04; + 4.76 mg/kg d.w. respectively). A similar trend was observed in autumn, when the cladodes of inoculated plants had higher contents, i.e., 33% xylose, 65% arabinose, and 40% mannose, respect to the controls. In conclusion, Arthrobacter sp. plays a role in the improvement of nutritional and nutraceutical properties of cactus pear plants due to its capabilities to promote plant growth. Therefore, these results open new perspectives in PGPB application in the agro-farming system as alternative strategy to improve cactus pear growth, yield, and cladodes quality, being the latter the main by-product to be utilized for additional industrial uses.
