Aqueous polyurethane is an environmentally friendly, low-cost, high-performance resin with good abrasion resistance and strong adhesion. Cationic aqueous polyurethane is limited in cathodic electrophoretic coatings due to its complicated preparation process and its poor stability and single performance after emulsification and dispersion. The introduction of perfluoropolyether alcohol (PFPE-OH) and light curing technology can effectively improve the stability of aqueous polyurethane emulsions, and thus enhance the functionality of coating films. In this paper, a new UV-curable fluorinated polyurethane-based cathodic electrophoretic coating was prepared using cationic polyurethane as a precursor, introducing PFPE-OH capping, and grafting hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The results showed that the presence of perfluoropolyether alcohol in the structure affected the variation of the moisture content of the paint film after flash evaporation. Based on the emulsion particle size and morphology tests, it can be assumed that the fluorinated cationic polyurethane emulsion is a core-shell structure with hydrophobic ends encapsulated in the polymer and hydrophilic ends on the outer surface. After abrasion testing and baking, the fluorine atoms of the coating were found to increase from 8.89% to 27.34%. The static contact angle of the coating to water was 104.6 ± 3°, and the water droplets rolled off without traces, indicating that the coating is hydrophobic. The coating has excellent thermal stability and tensile properties. The coating also passed the tests of impact resistance, flexibility, adhesion, and resistance to chemical corrosion in extreme environments. This study provides a new idea for the construction of a new and efficient cathodic electrophoretic coating system, and also provides more areas for the promotion of cationic polyurethane to practical applications.

Decreasing oil resources creates the need to search for raw materials in the biosphere, which can be converted into polyols suitable for obtaining polyurethane foams (PUF). One such low-cost and reproducible biopolymer is cellulose. There are not many examples of cellulose-derived polyols due to the sluggish reactivity of cellulose itself. Recently, cellulose and its hydroxypropyl derivatives were applied as source materials to obtain polyols, further converted into biodegradable rigid polyurethane foams (PUFs). Those PUFs were flammable. Here, we describe our efforts to modify such PUFs in order to decrease their flammability. We obtained an ester from diethylene glycol and phosphoric(III) acid and used it as a reactive flame retardant in the synthesis of polyol-containing hydroxypropyl derivative of cellulose. The cellulose-based polyol was characterized by infrared spectra (IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR) methods. Its properties, such as density, viscosity, surface tension, and hydroxyl numbers, were determined. Melamine was also added to the foamed composition as an additive flame retardant, obtaining PUFs, which were characterized by apparent density, water uptake, dimension stability, heat conductance, compressive strength, and heat resistance at 150 and 175 °C. Obtained rigid PUFs were tested for flammability by determining oxygen index, horizontal flammability test, and calorimetric analysis. Obtained rigid PUFs showed improved flammability resistance in comparison with non-modified PUFs and classic PUFs.

The significant rise in the use of clear aligners for orthodontic treatment is attributed to their aesthetic appeal, enhancing patient appearance and self-confidence. The aim of this study is to evaluate the aligners' response to common staining agents (coffee, black tea, Coca-Cola, and Red Bull) in color and chemical stability. Polyurethane-based thermoformed and 3D-printed aligners from four brands were exposed to common beverages to assess color change using a VITA Easyshade compact colorimeter after 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 7 days, as well as chemical stability using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The brand, beverage, and manufacturing method significantly influence color stability. ATR-FTIR analysis revealed compositional differences, with variations in response to beverage exposure affecting the integrity of polymer bonds. Color change analysis showed coffee as the most potent staining agent, particularly affecting Tera Harz TC85 aligners, while ClearCorrect aligners exhibited the least susceptibility. 3D-printed aligners showed a greater color change compared to thermoformed ones. Aligners with a PETG outer layer are more resistant to stains and chemical alterations than those made of polyurethane. Additionally, 3D-printed polyurethane aligners stain more than thermoformed ones. Therefore, PETG-layered aligners are a more reliable choice for maintaining the aesthetic integrity of aligners.

Myocardial infarction (MI) can be tackled by implanting cardiac patches which provide mechanical support to the heart. However, most tissue-engineered scaffolds face difficulty in attenuating oxidative stress, maintaining mechanical stability, and regenerating damaged cardiomyocytes. Here, we fabricated elastic cryogels using polyurethane modified with antioxidant gallic acid in its backbone (PUGA) and further coated them with decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) to improve adhesiveness, biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. The scaffold was functionalized with exosomes (EXO) isolated from adipose-derived stem cells having regenerative potential. PUGA-dECM + EXO was tested in a rat model with induced MI where echocardiography after 8 weeks of implantation showed significant recovery in treatment group. Histological analysis revealed a decrease in fibrosis after application of patch and promotion of angiogenesis with reduced oxidative stress was shown by immunostaining. Expression of cardiac tissue contractile function marker was also observed in treatment groups. Thus, the proposed biomaterial has a promising application to be utilized as a patch for cardiac regeneration. More detailed studies with larger animal species are needed for using these observations for specific applications.

Review
Polyurethane is a widely used material because of its excellent properties. Cellulose is a renewable, biocompatible, and biodegradable natural polymer that also has the advantages of a low density, high porosity, and large specific surface area. There are three main types of common nanocellulose: nanocellulose fibers, cellulose nanocrystals, and bacterial nanocellulose. Composites prepared with nanocellulose and polyurethane materials have good mechanical properties and good biocompatibility and can be applied in sensors, 3D printing, self-repairing materials, electromagnetic shielding, and many other areas. This paper details the preparation processes of different nanocelluloses and the application areas of composites, and points to the future development of nanocellulose polyurethane composites.

Polymer networks based on cyclodextrin and polyethylene glycol were prepared through polyaddition crosslinking using isophorone diisocyanate. The envisaged material properties are the hydrophilic character, specific to PEG and cyclodextrins, and the capacity to encapsulate guest molecules in the cyclodextrin cavity through physical interactions. The cyclodextrin was custom-modified with oligocaprolactone to endow the crosslinked material with a hydrolytically degradable character. SEM, DTG, and FTIR characterization methods have confirmed the morphology and structure of the prepared hydrogels. The influence of the crosslinking reaction feed was investigated through dynamic rheology. Further, thermal water swelling and hydrolytic degradation in basic conditions revealed the connectivity of the polymer network and the particular influence of the cyclodextrin amount in the crosslinking reaction feed on the material properties. Also, levofloxacin was employed as a model drug to investigate the drug loading and release capacity of the prepared hydrogels.

The goal of this research was to investigate the effect of different types of nanoparticles on the UV weathering resistance of polyurethane (PU) treatment in polyester-based fabrics. In this regard, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO), hydrophilic silica nanoparticles (SiO (200)), hydrophobic silica nanoparticles (SiO (R812)), and carbon nanotubes (CNT) were mixed into a waterborne polyurethane dispersion and impregnated into textile samples. The puncturing resistance of the developed specimens was examined before and after UV-accelerated aging. The changes in chemical structure and surface appearance in nanoparticle-containing systems and after UV treatments were documented using microscopic pictures and infrared spectroscopy (in attenuated total reflectance mode). Polyurethane impregnation significantly enhanced the puncturing strength of the neat fabric and reduced the textile's ability to be deformed. However, after UV aging, mechanical performance was reduced both in the neat and PU-impregnated specimens. After UV treatment, the average puncture strength of all nanoparticle-containing systems was always greater than that of aged fabrics impregnated with PU alone. In all cases, infrared spectroscopy revealed some slight differences in the absorbance intensity of characteristic peaks for polyurethane polymer in specimens before and after UV rays, which could be related to probable degradation effects.

In recent years, superhydrophobic coatings with self-cleaning abilities have attracted considerable attention. In this study, we introduced hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (OH-PDMS) into castor-oil-based waterborne polyurethanes and synthesized silicone-modified castor-oil-based UV-curable waterborne polyurethanes (SCWPU). Further, we identified the optimal amount of OH-PDMS to be added and introduced different amounts of micro- and nanoscale heptadecafluorodecyltrimethoxysilane-modified SiO particles (FAS-SiO) to prepare rough-surface SCWPU coatings with dense micro- and nanostructures, thus realizing waterborne superhydrophobic coatings. The results show that when the OH-PDMS content was 11 wt% and the total addition of FAS-SiO particles was 50% (with a 1:1:1 ratio of 100 nm, 1 µm, and 10 nm particles), the coatings exhibited a self-cleaning ability and superhydrophobicity with a contact angle of (152.36 ± 2.29)° and a roll-off angle of (4.9 ± 1.0)°. This castor-oil-based waterborne superhydrophobic coating has great potential for waterproofing, anti-fouling, anti-corrosion, and other applications.

Review
Fluorinated polyurethane (FPU) is a new kind of polyurethane (PU) material with great applicational potential, which is attributed to its high bond energy C-F bonds. Its unique low surface energy, excellent thermal stability, and chemical stability have attracted considerable research attention. FPU with targeted performance can be precisely synthesized through designing fluorochemicals as hard segments, soft segments, or additives and changes to the production process to satisfy the needs of coatings, clothing textiles, and the aerospace and biomedical industries for materials that are hydrophobic and that are resistant to weathering, heat, and flames and that have good biocompatibility. Here, the synthesis, structure, properties, and applications of FPU are comprehensively reviewed. The aims of this research are to shed light on the design scheme, synthesis method, structure, and properties of FPU synthesized from different kinds of fluorochemicals and their applications in different fields and the prospects for the future development of FPU.

Silicone rubber composites with good comprehensive properties modified with polyurethane were obtained through mixing and vulcanizing methods. Firstly, the polyurethane prepolymer with double bonds was prepared by polytetrahydrofuran glycol (PTMG, Mn = 1000), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The prepolymer was then added to the silicone rubber compounds to prepare silicone rubber composites, combining the excellent properties of polyurethane with the silicone rubber materials. The effects of polyurethane content on the mechanical properties, insulation, hydrophobicity, thermal stability, and flame retardancy of composites were studied in detail. The results showed that the silicone rubber composites not only have good hydrophobicity, thermal stability and flame retardant properties, but the addition of polyurethane significantly improves the tensile strength at room and low temperatures and the volume resistivity of the materials. The tensile strength increased by 32.5%, and the volume resistivity nearly doubled. The excellent electrical insulation, high hydrophobicity and good mechanical properties make the silicone rubber composites appropriate for use in the field of polymeric house arresters.
