PURPOSE
This study comprehensively reviewed the current status of digital workflows in fabricating removable partial dentures (RPDs) using evidence from clinical trials and case reports.
STUDY SELECTION
We performed a systematic review of the literature on the materials and fabrication of RPDs using digital technologies published in online databases from 1980 to 2020. We selected eligible articles from the search results, retrieved information on digital RPDs from these, and conducted a qualitative analysis. We report evidence from clinical papers and case reports, digital impression-taking methods, and maxillomandibular relationship (MMR) records.
RESULTS
A case report electronically published in 2019 introduced a clasp-retained RPD fabricated via a full-digital workflow without a gypsum definitive cast. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing of double-crown-retained RPDs with nonmetal materials were described in some case reports. Intraoral scanners were used to obtain digital impressions and MMR records in the fabrication of digital RPDs, which have potential advantages for reducing the number of clinical appointments and simplifying laboratory procedures. Evidence from clinical trials is scarce; a randomized controlled trial reported higher patient satisfaction with digital clasp-retained RPDs than with conventional RPDs.
CONCLUSIONS
Full-digital RPDs can be fabricated without a gypsum definitive cast. However, the indication for full-digital RPDs is limited to cases with Kennedy Class III/IV partially edentulous arches with several missing teeth. Challenges in digital impression-taking and MMR recording remain to be solved to extend these indications. More evidence from clinical trials is required to evaluate the efficacy and usefulness of digital RPDs.

OBJECTIVES
The aim of this article is to review the factors that attract to denture base resin (DBR) and to verify the influence of different surface treatments, chemical modification, or structural reinforcements on the properties of DBR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Searches were carried out in PubMed, Scopus, WOS, Google Scholar, EMBASE, and J-stage databases. The search included articles between 1999 and 2020. This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. The keywords used during the search were "," "Denture base," "PMMA," "Acrylic resin," "Surface properties," "hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity," "contact angle," and "surface free energy." English full-text articles involving studies with different acrylic resin modifications were included, whereas abstracts, dissertations, reviews, and articles in languages other than English were excluded. A meta-analysis was performed where appropriate.
RESULTS
Out of the 287 articles, 21 articles conformed to inclusion criteria. Sixteen articles were subjected to meta-analysis using random-effects model at 95% confidence interval. Results showed that DBR coatings/plasma coatings were effective methods to modify surface properties with estimated contact angle (CA) of 59.37° [95% confidence interval (CI): 53.69, 65.04]/55.87° (95% CI: 50.68, 61.06) and surface roughness ( ) of 0.55 µm (95% CI: 0.52, 0.58)/0.549 µm (95% CI: 0.5, 0.59), respectively. Antifungal particle incorporation into poly(methylmethacrylate) DBR also produced similar effects with an estimated of 0.16 µm (95% CI: 0.134, 0.187).
CONCLUSION
The three properties responsible for adhesion to DBR were , CA, and surface free energy in terms of hydrophobicity. Therefore, the correlations between the hydrophobicity of DBR and adhesion should be considered during future investigations for -related denture stomatitis.

PURPOSE
To systematically review past studies to determine the effect of various solutions on the color of denture teeth, thus answering the question in regards to which type of denture teeth has the best optical properties after exposure to various solutions. The method of measuring the color of artificial teeth was also evaluated as a secondary outcome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A search of studies that quantitatively investigated the influence of immersion solutions on the color change of denture teeth was conducted. Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed and Scopus databases were searched from 1997 to April 2021. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used during article selection. Data regarding the effect of immersion solutions, accelerated aging and surface treatments on color change were gathered. Methodologies used to assess optical properties were also summarized and compared. The modified CONSORT checklist was used to determine the risk of bias of past studied included in this review.
RESULTS
One hundred thirty-three studies were identified after removing duplicates. Forty-one studies were selected for full-text analysis, and 35 remaining papers met the inclusion criteria and were therefore included in this systematic review. Thirty-two in vitro studies and 3 in vivo studies were included in the review. All studies reported that immersion in various solutions has a significant influence on the change in color and optical properties of denture teeth. However, the discoloration of denture teeth is still clinically acceptable in most studies. Exposure to various solutions also affected the translucency parameter of denture teeth. Most studies also investigated the surface roughness and hardness along with the optical properties, and reported that immersion cycles did not cause changes in surface roughness of denture teeth, while hardness was affected. The optical properties of PMMA denture teeth have been studied extensively, whereas that of CAD/CAM and 3D printed denture teeth is limited.
CONCLUSIONS
Color stability of CAD/CAM milled denture teeth is comparable to conventional PMMA denture teeth. There are contradictory findings in terms of color stability of 3D printed denture teeth as compared to conventional PMMA denture teeth. Staining by coffee is worst among the common beverages and solutions investigated. Denture teeth can show color changes after immersion in staining beverages as early as one week. The degree of discoloration of denture teeth after immersion is time dependent, with the larger extent in the initial phase.

Denture stomatitis (DS), a common oral condition among denture wearers, is frequently associated with () colonization. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to provide a comprehensive assessment of DS prevalence and its relationship with in the Indian population. We conducted a thorough search of multiple databases for studies without any limitation to the publication timeframe, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Eligible studies were assessed for quality and included in the meta-analysis. Data regarding DS prevalence, risk factors, and colonization were extracted and analyzed. A total of four studies comprising 415 participants were included in the review. The overall odds ratio (OR) and risk ratio (RR) for the prevalence of in DS patients were 0.75 (95% CI 0.56 to 0.99) and 0.83 (95% CI 0.70 to 1.00), respectively, indicating a statistically significant association between DS and colonization. Several risk factors, including continuous denture wearing, advanced denture age, poor denture hygiene, and high sugar intake, were identified as contributing to DS development. This systematic review and meta-analysis highlight the substantial burden of DS and its association with colonization in the Indian population. The findings emphasize the need for comprehensive oral care, improved denture hygiene, dietary counseling, and interventions to enhance salivary flow in denture wearers to mitigate the risk of DS. These insights can inform healthcare providers and policymakers to develop targeted strategies for DS prevention and management in India. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the significance of oral health awareness and preventive strategies in groups with a high frequency of denture usage in a larger population.

OBJECTIVES
This systematic review aims to investigate the efficacy of denture adhesives (DAs) for complete dentures (CDs), and to provide clinical recommendations for prosthodontists and general practitioners.
DATA/SOURCES
Electronic databases (Medline, Embase, CENTRAL) and gray literatures were searched (up to March 2020) for relevant randomized and non-randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs and CCTs) evaluating the efficacy of DAs when applied to CDs. Primary outcomes were objectively assessed variables directly related to mastication (denture retention, maximum bite force and masticatory efficiency). Secondary outcomes included other objectively assessed variables and patient-reported outcomes.
STUDY SELECTION
Of the 1729 records identified, 39 studies (43 articles) were included in the analysis. Among them, 23 were RCTs and 16 were CCTs, with two multicenter clinical trials (1 RCT and 1 CCT). Meta-analysis results indicated that DAs provided significantly higher retention (SMD 1.34, 95 % CI: 0.89-1.79, P < 0.001) for CDs. Bite force (SMD 0.98, 95 % CI: 0.50-1.47, P < 0.001) and masticatory performance (SMD 0.72, 95 % CI: 0.23-1.22, P = 0.004) of the CD wearers were also improved after using DAs, but the effect size was relatively smaller.
CONCLUSION
Based on the results of this systematic review, it is concluded that DAs can improve denture retention, bite force and masticatory performance of CD wearers.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
This study investigated the effects of all types of DAs for CDs in terms of their effects on denture retention, masticatory performance, oral health-related quality of life and oral microorganisms for CD wearers.

BACKGROUND
It is strongly recommended to extract teeth with poor prognosis in head and neck cancer (HaNC) patients prior starting treatment with radiotherapy to avoid need for extraction post-radiotherapy and prevent development of osteoradionecrosis (ORN). Dental extraction means that patients are often left with insufficient teeth leading to psychological problems and reducing their quality of life post-radiotherapy. Some clinicians do not advocate the use of dentures in HaNC patients claiming that dentures might lead to soft tissue irritation followed by ORN when constructed on irradiated jaws.
AIMS
This systematic review aimed to investigate the existing evidence regarding the impact of denture use on the development of ORN in HaNC patients post-radiotherapy.
METHODS
This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Review and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guideline. Three database systems were used: Ovid Medline, EMBASE and PsycINFO. PROSPERO was searched for ongoing or recently completed systematic reviews. The https://ClinicalTrials.gov was searched for ongoing or recently completed trials. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools were used to assess quality of studies being reviewed.
RESULTS
Only three retrospective case-control studies were included. Numbers of participants included in the three studies are limited with incomparable types of mucosal dentures. None of the studies described the method of measurement of the exposure (denture use) in a standard, validated and reliable way.
CONCLUSION
The three included studies suggested no link between denture use and development of ORN. However, very little evidence exists and the robustness of the studies is questionable. Well-powered studies are needed.

Objectives: Patients with xerostomia manifest various clinical signs of oral dryness, which has an impact on oral functions and wearing of dental prosthese?s, but the evidence of xerostomia-related changes in denture performance is unsatisfactorily documented. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate whether the available literature can answer the focused question "Is there an association between xerostomia and decreased denture performance among patients wearing removable dentures?" Data sources: Indexed databases were explored without time or language restrictions up to and including March 2019. All levels of available evidence including experimental studies, case reports, and case series were searched using different combinations of the following keywords: saliva, xerostomia, dentures, personal satisfaction, quality of life, oral dryness, and oral complaints. Nine studies were included for qualitative synthesis. Overall, five studies had a cross-sectional design and four studies were case-control studies. In these studies, the number of participants ranged between 35 patients and 493 patients with mean ages ?from 56 to 82 years; 66% of the patients were completely and 34% were partially edentulous.

Conclusion: All studies included patient satisfaction with dentures and recorded the presence of oral dryness. Six out of nine studies demonstrated that xerostomia is significantly associated with the decreased performance of removable dentures. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Denture adhesives are widely used products, but limited evidence regarding their toxicity is available.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this scoping review was to map the existing literature on the toxic potential of denture adhesives.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
This scoping review was structured based on the 5-step methodology proposed by Arksey and O'Malley and The Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. The methods were registered on the Open Science Framework (
). The following research question was formulated: Are there any toxic effects related to the use of denture adhesives? The electronic literature search was performed independently by 2 authors in the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. The inclusion criteria were in vitro and clinical studies; studies that evaluated the cytotoxic properties of denture adhesives as local or systemic implications; and studies published in English. RESULTS
The search conducted in October 2020 provided 1099 articles. In total, 33 studies were included, 14 in vitro and 19 clinical studies. Commercially available denture adhesives have a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on fibroblasts and keratinocytes, with poor cell recovery noted in older human fibroblasts. Patients presented different levels of neurologic or hematological alterations associated with the excessive use of denture adhesives.
CONCLUSIONS
Most commercially available denture adhesives have a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect, and the use of well-adapted removable dental prostheses, proper patient follow-ups, and correct instructions for their use when indicated should be a priority.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Prosthetic rehabilitation, especially with removable complete dentures (CDs), can contribute to speech problems, although the prevalence of the problem is unclear.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the influence of implant-supported fixed complete dentures (FCDs), implant-supported overdentures, and removable CDs on speech articulation disorders in patients with at least 1 completely edentulous jaw.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
This study was prepared according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42020182705). The PubMed/Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences, Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry, and Cochrane Library databases were searched through April 2020 to identify clinical trials comparing maxillary and/or mandibular implant-supported dentures with removable CD use in terms of speech articulation in participants with at least 1 completely edentulous jaw. The risk of bias of selected studies was assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools, and the quality of evidence was tested by using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach.
RESULTS
Initially, 2586 articles were identified, and their titles and abstracts were read. Sixteen articles were read in full, and 8 studies (4 paired clinical trials and 4 cross-sectional studies) were included in this review. In total, 290 prosthesis users aged 29 to 90 years, approximately 44 of whom had hearing difficulties, were included. Four studies had a low risk of bias, and 4 studies had a high risk of bias. Distortions of the /s/ phoneme were observed more often in the first 6 months of maxillary FCD use than with removable CD use. Speech articulation did not differ between mandibular FCD and removable CD users. The quality of evidence for speech articulation disorders was low.
CONCLUSIONS
Given the low quality of evidence on speech articulation disorders, further research on speech articulation disorders in prosthesis wearers is needed.

Denture adhesives are products used by wearers of removable dental prosthesis; however, systematic reviews on their influence on masticatory performance are lacking.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the efficiency of denture adhesives in improving the masticatory performance of users of complete dentures (CD).
MATERIAL AND METHODS
This systematic review was organized from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist, and the methods were registered on the international prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO-CRD42020187385). The focus question was as follows: "Does the use of denture adhesives improve the masticatory performance of patients with removable dental prostheses?" The databases PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were used to extract information.
RESULTS
The search yielded 1338 articles, of which 6 met the inclusion criteria and were selected. All included studies were crossover randomized controlled trials including bimaxillary edentulous individuals. Masticatory performance was evaluated by using a comminution and sieve method.
CONCLUSIONS
Denture adhesives significantly increased the masticatory performance of CD users.
