Little is known about the rare condition, osseous metaplasia of the uterus, with few cases described worldwide. It is a non-neoplastic transformation in which endometrial stroma is replaced with a mix of bone and cartilage. Occurring commonly after pregnancy, it is thought that the persistence of foetal embryonic remnants contributes to this change. If untreated, osseous metaplasia of the uterus can have a major impact on a woman's fertility.
CASE PRESENTATION
The authors present a case of a woman with the feeling of a foreign body in the vagina and a long-standing history of secondary infertility of unknown cause. She was found to have osseous metaplasia of the uterus with spontaneous expulsion of the bony fragments from the uterus into the cervical canal, creating the sensation of foreign body in the vagina. She was treated with hysteroscopic resection. Fertility returned 3 months post procedure.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION
This case provides a valuable reminder that osseous metaplasia can have a varied clinical presentation and requires a careful history and examination.
CONCLUSION
This case reinforces the importance of a thorough diagnostic assessment in the woman presenting with foreign body in the vagina/cervix and /orsecondary infertility. This rare but important diagnosis can have a lasting impact on a woman's reproductive health if left untreated.

Several histopathological variants of colorectal carcinoma can be distinguished, some associated with specific molecular profiles. However, in routine practice, ninety/ninety-five percent of all large bowel tumors are diagnosed as conventional adenocarcinoma, even though they are a heterogeneous group including rare histotypes, which are often under-recognized. Indeed, colorectal cancer exhibits differences in incidence, location of tumor, pathogenesis, molecular pathways and outcome depending on histotype. The aim is therefore to review the morphological and molecular features of these rare variants of intestinal carcinomas which may hold the key to differences in prognosis and treatment.

Bronchial involvement in pulmonary actinomycosis is rare and has been reported in the literature rarely. However, these reports describe endobronchial actinomycosis secondary to foreign body aspiration (for example, a fish bone). Our case did not have any history or clinical evidence suggesting foreign body aspiration, which makes it even more rare. A 55-year-old woman presented with complaints of on and off haemoptysis and cough for three weeks. In view of the haemoptysis and consolidation seen on imaging, a bronchoalveolar lavage was done and sent for cytological assessment. Few atypical cells with nuclear hyperchromasia and prominent nucleoli were noted. In view of the persistent haemoptysis, worsening symptoms, and non-resolution of the consolidation despite antibiotics, and the finding of atypical cells, segmental resection was done. A final diagnosis of bronchiectatic actinomycosis with osseous metaplasia was given. The patient was started on prolonged antibiotics with good response and recovery. Other risk factors associated with pulmonary actinomycosis include alcoholism, diabetes, haematological diseases, human immunodeficiency viral infection, use of immunosuppressants, and rarely chronic lung diseases, such as bronchiectasis. Our case had this rare association of bronchiectasis with bronchial actinomycosis. Bronchiectatic actinomycosis is a rare infection and it can mimic several lung disorders like unresolving pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis, foreign body, and even lung tumours. The pathologists and clinicians should be aware of this entity and thus help in the early diagnosis and better management of patients with this disease.

Osseous metaplasia is defined as the formation of lamellar bone inside soft tissue structures where bone normally does not exist. It results from the transformation of non-osseous connective tissue into mature bone. This condition is rare in the oral and maxillofacial region. We report a case of osseous metaplasia of the maxilla, a rare benign tumor in an uncommon region. A 60-year-old male patient visited our clinic complaining of foreign body sensation and asymptomatic swelling on the right palatal side. However, he did not experience pain and reported no local trauma that he could remember. Intra-oral examination revealed an exophytic lesion on the right palatal portion. On computed tomography, there was a round hard-tissue mass approximately 2 cm in diameter on the right palate area. The mass was biopsied and diagnosed as an osseous metaplasia. We review the clinical, radiographic, and histologic features and common causes of osseous metaplasia and report a rare case of osseous metaplasia of the palate.

Osseous metaplasia of the endometrium is defined by the presence of mature or immature bone tissue in the endometrium. Most of the cases are associated with secondary infertility after abortion, chronic endometritis, or the presence of foreign bodies in the endometrium. Some cases are asymptomatic; others have menstrual abnormalities such as menorrhagia or oligomenorrhea. Osseous metaplasia is mostly seen after recurrent abortions. Removing the bone tissue helps spontaneous conception. Intrauterine hyperechogenic lesion, suggesting calcification in transvaginal ultrasonography, creates suspicion in diagnosis. Here, we present a patient who underwent dilatation and curettage procedure following a missed abortion, and osseous metaplasia of endometrium was radiologically detected at a 1-month follow-up examination. White bony material was shown in the uterine cavity with hysteroscopy. The lesion was treated by hysteroscopic removal without any complications. Histology confirmed the diagnosis of endometrial osseous metaplasia. Thus, hysteroscopy was effective in the diagnosis and treatment of endometrial osseous metaplasia.

While formation and regeneration of the skeleton have been studied for a long period of time, significant scientific advances in this field continue to emerge based on an unmet clinical need to improve options to promote bone repair. In this review, we discuss the relationship between mechanisms of bone formation and bone regeneration. Data clearly show that regeneration is not simply a reinduction of the molecular and cellular programs that were used for development. Instead, the mechanical environment exerts a strong influence on the mode of repair, while during development, cell-intrinsic processes drive the mode of skeletal formation. A major advance in the field has shown that cell fate is flexible, rather than terminal, and that chondrocytes are able to differentiate into osteoblasts and other cell types during development and regeneration. This is discussed in a larger context of regeneration in vertebrates as well as the clinical implication that this shift in understanding presents.

True thymic hyperplasia is defined as an increase in both the size and weight of the gland, while maintaining a normal microscopic architecture. Massive true thymic hyperplasia is a rare type of hyperplasia that compresses adjacent structures and causes various symptoms. Limited reports address the imaging findings of massive true thymic hyperplasia. Herein, we report a case of massive true thymic hyperplasia in a 3-year-old girl with no remarkable medical history. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed an anterior mediastinal mass with a bilobed configuration containing punctate and linear calcifications in curvilinear septa, which corresponded to lamellar bone deposits in the interlobular septa. To our knowledge, this is the first report of massive true thymic hyperplasia with osseous metaplasia. We also discuss the imaging features and etiology of massive true thymic hyperplasia with osseous metaplasia.

Vascularization is a crucial step during musculoskeletal tissue regeneration via bioengineered constructs or grafts. Functional vasculature provides oxygen and nutrients to the graft microenvironment, facilitates wound healing, enhances graft integration with host tissue, and ensures the long-term survival of regenerating tissue. Therefore, imaging de novo vascularization (i.e., angiogenesis), changes in microvascular morphology, and the establishment and maintenance of perfusion within the graft site (i.e., vascular microenvironment or VME) can provide essential insights into engraftment, wound healing, as well as inform the design of tissue engineering (TE) constructs. In this review, we focus on state-of-the-art imaging approaches for monitoring the VME in craniofacial TE applications, as well as future advances in this field. We describe how cutting-edge in vivo and ex vivo imaging methods can yield invaluable information regarding VME parameters that can help characterize the effectiveness of different TE constructs and iteratively inform their design for enhanced craniofacial bone regeneration. Finally, we explicate how the integration of novel TE constructs, preclinical model systems, imaging techniques, and systems biology approaches could usher in an era of "image-based tissue engineering."
