BACKGROUND
Morganella morganii is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped, facultative anaerobic bacillus divided into two subspecies, morganii and sibonii. Previously classified as Proteus morganii, it belongs to human gut commensal microbiota. Nevertheless, on rare occasions, especially in nosocomial and postoperative environment as well as in patients with the impaired immune system and young children, it may cause potentially fatal systemic infection.
OBJECTIVES
The aim of our systematic review was to determine whether and what invasive infections in humans were caused by Morganella morganii and to estimate outcomes of administered antibiotic management.
DATA SOURCES
This systematic review was registered at the PROSPERO database of systematic reviews and meta-analyses before initiation of the research (registration number CRD42020171919). Study eligibility criteria and participants. patients of any age and both sex harbouring Morganella morganii as the only microorganism in bodily fluids or tissues, from where it was isolated and identified by one or more of the following diagnostic methods: conventional techniques including colony morphology, Vitek 2, API or BD Phoenix biochemical systems, as well as more sophisticated methods, such as Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and species-specific PCR for M. morganii.
METHODS AND INTERVENTIONS
We have systematically searched MEDLINE, EBSCO, SCOPUS, SCINDEX and GOOGLE SCHOLAR for case reports and case series with M. morganii invasive infections.
RESULTS
M. morganii can cause serious infections of different tissue in patients of any age. The most isolates were susceptible to ceftazidime, imipenem and amikacin. Majority of the patients completely recovered after antibiotic treatment. About 15% of the patients died despite of the therapy. Gentamicin was the most frequently used antibiotic in the treatment of infection caused by M. morganii.
CONCLUSION
M. morganii invasive infections should be taken into consideration by the clinicians, especially in hospital conditions, due to its high degree of mortality and high potential of this bacterium to develop multidrug resistance. Treatment of M. morganii infections should include gentamycin in combination with third generation cephalosporin or another antibiotic to which M. morganii is susceptible (after testing isolates for third cephalosporin generation for the production of AmpC β -lactamases).

BACKGROUND
The oral microbiome is diverse and exists as multispecies microbial communities on oral surfaces in structurally and functionally organized biofilms.
AIM
To describe the network of microbial interactions (both synergistic and antagonistic) occurring within these biofilms and assess their role in oral health and dental disease.
METHODS
PubMed database was searched for studies on microbial ecological interactions in dental biofilms. The search results did not lend themselves to systematic review and have been summarized in a narrative review instead.
RESULTS
Five hundred and forty-seven original research articles and 212 reviews were identified. The majority (86%) of research articles addressed bacterial-bacterial interactions, while inter-kingdom microbial interactions were the least studied. The interactions included physical and nutritional synergistic associations, antagonism, cell-to-cell communication and gene transfer.
CONCLUSIONS
Oral microbial communities display emergent properties that cannot be inferred from studies of single species. Individual organisms grow in environments they would not tolerate in pure culture. The networks of multiple synergistic and antagonistic interactions generate microbial inter-dependencies and give biofilms a resilience to minor environmental perturbations, and this contributes to oral health. If key environmental pressures exceed thresholds associated with health, then the competitiveness among oral microorganisms is altered and dysbiosis can occur, increasing the risk of dental disease.

This systematic review aims to learn if and how it is possible to use the human microbiome to indicate the time elapsed after death. Articles were searched on the PubMed database using predefined data fields and keywords; reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses were excluded. The final selection included 14 papers (out of 144). The results indicated that the microorganisms present in the cadaveric island succeed predictably over time, with markers between the stages of decomposition constituting a potential innovative tool for postmortem interval (PMI) estimation. The human microbiome has the potential to be used for PMI estimation and may present advantages as microbes are present in all seasons, in all habitats, including the most extreme ones, and because microbial communities respond predictably to environmental changes.

RESULTS
twelve studies (four cross-sectional, five cohort and three intervention) reported colonisation of the oral cavity of older people by microorganisms commonly associated with respiratory infections. Aspiration pneumonia occurred less in people who received professional oral care compared with no such care. Isolation of Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was related to mortality due to aspiration pneumonia. An interesting finding was isolation of Escherichia coli, a gut bacterium.
LIMITATIONS
more information may be present in publications about other co-morbidities that did not meet inclusion criteria. A high degree of heterogeneity prevented a meta-analysis. Issues included sampling size, no power and effect size calculations; different oral health assessments; how oral specimens were analysed and how aspiration pneumonia was diagnosed.
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF KEY FINDINGS
pathogenic microorganisms colonising the oral microbiome are associated with aspiration pneumonia in older people in residential care; professional oral hygiene care is useful in reducing aspiration pneumonia risk.

BACKGROUND
The septic arthritis of the hip is a complex condition characterized by a variety of clinical presentations, a challenging diagnosis and different surgical treatment options, including arthroscopy, resection arthroplasty and one and two-stage total hip replacement. Each technique reports variable results in terms of infection eradication rate. The aim of this systematic review is to compare the most relevant studies available in current literature and to assess if a better treatment outcome can be predicted based on the microbiology, history, and type of infection (active vs quiescent) of each case.
METHODS
A systematic review of the literature was performed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, including the studies dealing with the treatment of hip septic arthritis in adult patients. Electronic databases, namely the MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science, were reviewed using a combination of following keywords "septic arthritis" AND "hip joint" OR "hip" AND "adult".
RESULTS
The total number of patients included in this review was 1236 (45% of which females), for 1238 hips. The most common pathogen isolated was Staphylococcus aureus in its Methicillin-sensitive variant ranging from 2 to 37% of cases. Negative cultures were the second most common finding. It was also differentiated the type of infection of the hip, 809 and 417 patients with active and quiescent hip infection, respectively, were analyzed. Eradication rates for two-stage revision arthroplasty ranged between 85 and 100%, for one-stage approach between 94 and 100%, while for arthroscopic debridement/lavage between 89 and 100%.
CONCLUSION
Staphylococcus aureus is the most common microorganism isolated followed by culture negative infections. Arthroscopic, one and two stage procedures can be effective in the treatment of hip septic arthritis when the indication is consistent with the type of infection retrieved.

The microbiota is composed of numerous resident microorganisms, which contribute to the health and illness of the individual. When the microbiota is in dysbiosis, it can cause some pathological processes and in men it can be correlated with male infertility, so the present study does a systematic review, identifying whether there is a correlation between the microbiota and seminal quality. We analyzed 7 papers published in PubMed, Medline and the Cochrane library databases, in English and published between 2012 and 2022. In men with normal semen parameters, a higher prevalence of Lactobacillus. There was a higher prevalence of Prevotella in patients who had some seminal alteration. We conclude that the microbiota is correlated with seminal quality, since the decrease in Lactobacillus and the increase in other species is seen in infertile men.

Heat treatment, or thermal disinfection, is one of the simplest disinfection methods, and is widely used in the water, sanitation, and food sectors, especially in low resource settings. Pathogen reductions achieved during heat treatment are influenced by a combination of temperature and exposure time. The objective of this paper was to construct updated time-temperature pathogen inactivation curves to define "safety zones" for the reduction of four pathogen groups (bacteria, viruses, protozoan (oo)cysts, and helminth eggs) during heat treatment in a variety of matrices. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to determine the times needed to achieve specified levels of pathogen reduction at different temperatures. Web of Science was searched using a Boolean string to target studies of heat treatment and pasteurization systems that exposed pathogens in water, wastewater, biosolids, soil, or food matrices to temperatures between 20 °C and 95 °C. Data were extracted from tables or figures and regression was used to assess the relationship between time and temperature. Our findings indicate that the temperatures and times needed to achieve a 1-log reduction of all pathogen groups are likely higher and longer, respectively, than previously reported. The type of microorganism and the matrix significantly impact T values reported at different temperatures. At high temperatures, the time-temperature curves are controlled by thermally stable viruses such as hepatitis A virus. Data gaps include the lack of data on protozoa, and the lack of data on all pathogen groups at low temperatures, for long exposure times, and with high log reductions. The findings from this study can be used by engineers, food safety specialists for the planning and design of engineered water, sanitation, and food pasteurization and treatment systems.

To investigate the existence of any association between new putative periodontal pathogens and periodontitis. Two independent reviewers conducted electronic literature searches in the MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, DOSS and Google Scholar databases as well as a manual search to identify eligible clinical studies prior to November 2022. Studies comparing the prevalence of microorganisms other than the already-known periodontal pathogens in subgingival plaque and/or saliva samples between subjects with periodontitis and subject with periodontal health were included. Meta-analyses were performed on data provided by the included studies. Fifty studies including a total of 2739 periodontitis subjects and 1747 subjects with periodontal health were included. The Archaea domain and 25 bacterial species (Anaeroglobus geminatus, Bacteroidales [G-2] bacterium HMT 274, Desulfobulbus sp. HMT 041, Dialister invisus, Dialister pneumosintes, Eubacterium brachy, Enterococcus faecalis, Eubacterium nodatum, Eubacterium saphenum, Filifactor alocis, Fretibacterium sp. HMT 360, Fretibacterium sp. HMT 362, Mogibacterium timidum, Peptoniphilaceae sp. HMT 113, Peptostreptococcus stomatis, Porphyromonas endodontalis, Slackia exigua, Streptococcus gordonii, Selenomonas sputigena, Treponema amylovorum, Treponema lecithinolyticum, Treponema maltophilum, Treponema medium, Treponema parvum and Treponema socranskii) were found to be statistically significantly associated with periodontitis. Network studies should be conducted to investigate the role of these newly identified periodontitis-associated microorganisms through interspecies interaction and host-microbe crosstalk analyses.

BACKGROUND
The gut fermentation syndrome (GFS), also known as the endogenous alcohol fermentation syndrome or auto brewery syndrome, is a rare and underdiagnosed medical condition where consumed carbohydrates are converted to alcohol by the microbiota in the gastrointestinal or urinary tract. The symptoms of GFS can have severe impact on patients' wellbeing and can have social and legal consequences. Unfortunately, not much is reported about GFS. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the evidence for GFS, causal micro-organisms, diagnostics, and possible treatments.
METHODS
A protocol was developed prior to initiation of the systematic review (PROSPERO 207182). We performed a literature search for clinical studies on 1 September 2020 using PubMed and Embase. We included all clinical studies, including case reports that described the GFS.
RESULTS
In total, 17 case reports were included, consisting of 20 patients diagnosed with GFS. The species that caused the GFS included Klebsiella pneumoniae, Candida albicans, C. glabrata, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, C. intermedia, C. parapsilosis, and C. kefyr.
CONCLUSIONS
GFS is a rare but underdiagnosed disease in daily practice. The disease is mostly reported by Saccharomyces and Candida genera, and some cases were previously treated with antibiotics. Studies in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver disease suggest a bacterial origin of endogenous alcohol-production, which might also be causal micro-organisms in GFS. Current treatments for GFS include antibiotics, antifungal medication, low carbohydrate diet, and probiotics. There might be a potential role of fecal microbiota transplant in the treatment of GFS.

INTRODUCTION
A major cause of injury and the second cause of death worldwide is stroke. Among several infectious agents considered as the risk factor of stroke, some pathogens demonstrated stronger robust associations with stroke. Proposing an accurate correlation between infectious microorganisms and stroke provides valuable information for early intervention and control of the infections.
METHODS
In this study, we searched the literature using the Web of Science, PMC/Medline via PubMed, and Scopus databases up to July 2018 without time and language restrictions. After quality assessment, 16 articles were included in the study. The whole data extraction process was independently conducted by two reviewers.
RESULTS
Based on the results of the studies, viruses, such as Hepatitis C virus (HCV), Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1, 2 (HSV-1, 2), Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV or Chickenpox), and West Nile virus (WNV) seem to be common causes of ischemic stroke. Moreover, the association of other microbial categories, such as Streptococcus mutans (in bacteria), Toxocara spp. and Toxoplasma gondii (in parasites), and Rhizopus sp. (in fungi) with stroke was reported.
CONCLUSION
Considering the adverse role of the above-mentioned microorganisms, it is necessary to implement some preventive measures for stroke treatment.
