BACKGROUND
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been recently proposed as a promising alternative therapy for Denture Stomatitis (DS). The present systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the current available evidence regarding the efficacy of PDT in the management of DS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ProQuest were searched up to June 7, 2023. All relevant clinical trials were included. RevMan software was used for the statistical analyses.
RESULTS
Elven randomized clinical trials (460 DS patients) were included. Eight studies assessed the efficacy of PDT vs. topical antifungal therapy, while three studies assessed the adjunctive use of PDT (PDT + antifungal therapy) vs. topical antifungal therapy alone. The results revealed comparable efficacy of PDT and conventional antifungal therapy on candida colonization at 15 days (MD: 0.95, 95% CI: -0.28, 2.19, p = 0.13) and at the end of follow-up (MD: -0.17, 95% CI: -1.33, 0.98, p = 0.77). The pooled two studies revealed relatively better efficacy of adjunctive use of PDT with antifungal therapy on candida colonization compared to antifungal therapy alone at 15 days (MD: -6.67, 95% CI: -15.15, 1.82, p = 0.12), and at the end of follow-up (MD: -7.14, 95% CI: -19.78, 5.50, p = 0.27). Additionally, the results revealed comparable efficacy of PDT and topical antifungal therapy on the clinical outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS
PDT might be considered a viable option for DS either as an adjunct or as an alternative to the topical antifungal medications. Further studies with adequate sample sizes and standardized PDT parameters are warranted.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Gel formulations containing antimicrobials are a potential alternative for the development of new medicines for the treatment of denture stomatitis (DS). However, whether they are more effective than antifungal drugs is unclear.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review was to identify whether gels formulated with antimicrobial substances are more effective and biocompatible for the treatment of DS than antifungal drugs.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
This systematic review was structured according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO; CRD42022379510). Searches were performed in the PubMed, Lilacs, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar databases in November 2022. Randomized and nonrandomized clinical trials comparing the efficacy of experimental gels and conventional antifungals in the treatment of DS were included.
RESULTS
Gels formulated with Zataria multiflora essential oil and clove and cinnamon extracts showed higher antimicrobial efficacy compared with miconazole and clotrimazole. Formulations containing Uncaria tomentosa, Punica granatum, and propolis extract showed similar efficacy to nystatin and miconazole. Two formulations containing P. granatum were less effective than nystatin and miconazole. Gels of Z. multiflora and miconazole induced adverse effects including burning, itching, nausea, and vomiting. The included studies did not evaluate the biocompatibility of the gels.
CONCLUSIONS
Gels formulated with natural antimicrobials such as Z. multiflora, U. tomentosa, P. granatum, propolis, and clove and cinnamon showed higher or similar antimicrobial efficacy to conventional antifungals in the treatment of DS. The biocompatibility of experimental gels based on natural agents should be evaluated.

OBJECTIVES
The purpose of this systematic review with network meta-analysis was to assess the comparative efficacy of various types of denture adhesives in complete denture patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
A search was conducted for trials published in Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception until July 2023 (PROSPERO: CRD42023451045). A network meta-analysis was performed to assess the comparative efficacy of different denture adhesive types and ranked using the Surface Under the Cumulative Ranking (SUCRA) system. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach was used to assess the level of certainty of evidence.
RESULTS
Seventeen articles were included in the quantitative analysis. Cream denture adhesives significantly increased bite force in both incisal region (RR = 7.63[95%CI: 3.34, 11.91]) (P < .05) as well as premolar and molar regions (RR = 33.66[95%CI: 15.15, 52.16]). Cream adhesives significantly improved retention of dentures as assessed by the reduced number of denture dislodgments (RR = -5.35[95%CI: -9.93, -0.77]) (P = 0.022), Kapur's index of retention (maxillary denture) (RR = 0.80[95%CI: 0.18, 1.42]) (P = 0.012) and Kapur's index of retention (mandibular denture) (RR = 1.27[95%CI: 0.67, 1.87]) (P < .05). Powder adhesives significantly increased premolar and molar bite force (RR = 36.00[95%CI: 16.20, 55.79]) (P < .05) and Kapur's index of retention (mandibular denture) (RR = 1.54[95%CI: 0.58, 2.49]) (P = 0.002). None of the adhesives were statistically significant for remaining outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS
Cream and powder denture adhesives are effective in enhancing the retention of mandibular dentures (Kapur's index) and bite force in the premolar/molar region in complete denture wearers (moderate level of certainty of evidence).
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Cream and powder denture adhesives are effective in improving the retention and function of complete dentures.

OBJECTIVE
This review investigated the current literature pertaining to the repairability of computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) milled and three-dimensional (3D) printed resin-based dental prostheses (RBDPs) as well as the appropriate surface treatment for each repair material that will produce adequate repair bond strength.
DATA/SOURCES
PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched for published articles involving repair of CAD-CAM RBDPs between January 2010 and June 2023. Data were collected and analyzed to reveal the surface treatment effects, suggested repair materials, and strength of repaired RBDPs.
STUDY SELECTION
Out of 164 retrieved titles, 11 studies were included, of which five investigated the repair of 3D-printed RBDPs, three investigated the repair of CAD-CAM milled resins, and three investigated both materials. Additionally, of the included studies, seven investigated denture base resins, three studied provisional restoration resins, and one evaluated 3D-printed intraoral splints. Various surface treatments were suggested, with air-abrasive methods being the most commonly used. Different materials for resin repair were proposed and used, including auto-polymerized, reline, and composite resins. For 3D-printed resins, repair with Bis-acrylic/Bis-GMA composites improved repair strength.
CONCLUSION
Surface treatments positively affected the repair strength of conventional and milled RBDPs. However, challenges remain relevant to the repair of 3D-printed resins owing to composition mismatches and fabrication techniques. Therefore, further investigation is required to develop new 3D-printed resins.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
CAD-CAM milled resins have satisfactory repair strength, which increases with surface treatment. The repair of 3D-printed resins has proven challenging even with surface treatments. However, composite resins are the materials of choice.

BACKGROUND
Ameloblastoma (AM), the benign counterpart of ameloblastic carcinoma, is a benign odontogenic tumor of epithelial origin, naturally aggressive, with unlimited growth potential and a high tendency to relapse if not adequately removed. Patients with AM treated surgically can benefit from dental implant therapy, promoting oral rehabilitation and improving their quality of life. The present study aimed to determine the survival rate of dental implants placed after surgical treatment of patients affected by AM. In addition, there were two secondary objectives: 1) To evaluate which dental implant loading protocols are most frequently used and 2) To determine the type of prosthetic restoration most commonly used in these patients.
METHODS
The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed during the study. Searches were performed in three databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Google Scholar) until November 2023. Additionally, the electronic search was enriched by an iterative hand search of journals related to oral pathology and medicine, maxillofacial surgery, and oral prosthodontics and implantology. Only reports and case series in English from January 2003 to date were included. The Joanna Briggs Institute tool (JBI-Case Reports/Case Series) was used for the study quality assessment.
RESULTS
The total number of patients and implants studied were 64 and 271, respectively, all with surgically treated AM. The patient's ages ranged from 8 to 79 years, with a mean (SD) age of 37.3 ± 16.4. Fifty-three percent were male and 47% were female. The range of follow-up duration was 1 to 22 years. An implant survival/success rate of 98.1% was reported. In addition, most of them were conventionally loaded (38.3%). Hybrid implant-supported fixed dentures were the most commonly used by prosthodontists (53%).
CONCLUSIONS
Oral rehabilitation with dental implants inserted in free flaps for orofacial reconstruction in surgically treated patients with AM can be considered a safe and successful treatment modality.

PURPOSE
To identify the most effective protocol for bonding denture bases and artificial teeth made with different computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials (milled and 3D-printed) and conventional heat-polymerized resins.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
This review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) criteria and registered in the International Prospective Registry of Systematic Reviews PROSPERO (CRD42021276084). An electronic search was performed independently by two examiners in PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, and OpenGrey databases for articles published up to and including December 2021.
RESULTS
The electronic search returned 806 articles, and after duplicates were removed, 589 articles remained. Four articles met the eligibility criteria to be included in this study. After evaluating the different combinations of denture base materials and artificial teeth, it was found that IvoBase CAD Bond (Ivoclar Vivadent) was effective for bonding CAD/CAM denture bases to prefabricated acrylic resin teeth, which showed no differences compared to the heat-polymerized resin denture base bonded to prefabricated acrylic resin teeth (χ2: 68.56; I2: 96%; P < .001).
CONCLUSIONS
The IvoBase CAD Bond bonding system can be used for the fabrication of CAD/CAM denture bases with prefabricated acrylic resin teeth.

PURPOSE
To identify and map the scientific evidence regarding factors associated with the nonadaptation of completely edentulous patients to mandibular complete dentures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
This scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR statement for Scoping Reviews and was based on guidelines proposed by Arksey and O'Malley and the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis. The methodology was registered on the Open Science Framework. An electronic search strategy was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Virtual Health Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, Google Scholar, and ProQuest databases was conducted. Studies that evaluated factors associated with adaptation to and acceptance of mandibular complete dentures were included, such as sociodemographic, psychologic, patient-related, and denture-related items.
RESULTS
The search conducted in March 2022 yielded 9,978 studies. In total, 24 studies were included for data extraction. Sociodemographic factors did not interfere with adaptation to a mandibular complete denture. Psychologic factors and patient-related aspects showed greater association with nonadaptation to mandibular complete dentures than denture-reported factors.
CONCLUSION
Although it is suggestive that psychologic and patient-related factors have higher association with the acceptance of new dentures, data must be interpreted with caution due to the variability of methodologies of the studies included in this review.

Epidermolysis bullosa hereditaria (EBH) is a group of rare diseases characterized by a cutaneous-mucosal fragility with the formation of bullae, including the oral mucosa. Therapeutic choices, especially prosthetic rehabilitation, must anticipate the worsening of the limitation of oral opening while respecting the functional and aesthetic expectations of the patients. This review on the oral prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with epidermolysis bullosa hereditaria (EBH) to study the level of evidence and quality of the presented available articles and establish clinical recommendations for the prosthetic management of these patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
An electronic search was done in July 2022 in five databases following PICOTS elements. The quality of the reports was established using the modified Pierson, Bradford Hills, and Ottawa Newcastle scale.
RESULTS
Data extracted from 19 case reports for protocolized analysis corresponded to 64 patients and 80 dental prostheses with almost 9 out of 10 patients being completely edentulous. The distribution of EBH types was 84% dystrophic, 10.5% junctional, and 5.5% simplex. The difficulties encountered by the authors synthetized in this review characteristically reflected those most likely encountered in dental practice. Most rehabilitations were implant-supported prostheses (85%) followed by removable dentures (10%) and finally dental-supported rehabilitations (5%). Fixed full-arch implant-supported prostheses represented 76.4% of implant-supported prostheses and this last prosthetic solution described showed the highest scientific quality.
CONCLUSIONS
In an individualized approach to treatment, we recommend that in cases of total edentulism, fixed full arch implant-supported prostheses are the most appropriate, as they allow the best computer-aided planning, design, manufacture, and fitting of the prosthesis in such a complex clinical context.

This systematic review aimed to evaluate the dental prosthetic rehabilitation (DPR) in patients after jaw reconstruction with fibula free flap. Four databases were searched from January 2000 to January 2023. Of the 2507 studies identified, 36 observational studies were included. Cancer was the most common surgical indications for jawbone resection with 58.3 % of cases followed by benign tumours which representing 24 %. The DPR rate was estimated at 51.6 % across the studies (ranging from 38 % to 55 % depending on the benign or malignant nature of the tumors). Implant-supported prostheses represented 58.9 % of cases of which 66.9 % were fixed and 33.1 % were implant-stabilized overdentures. Virtual surgical planning (VSP) was used in 20 % of studies and aimed to improve the position of the grafted fibula, quality, and aesthetics of DPR and to decrease ischemia and the operating time. One in two authors performed DPR 12 months after jaw reconstruction. If implant survival rate reached 93 % in non-irradiated fibula, it fell to 38 %, 55 %, and 77 % if implantation occurred in the 12, 17, and 24 months after radiotherapy, respectively. Various parameters should be better investigated in further studies including the typology of the prostheses (implant-supported vs removable), the use of VSP, and the optimal time for DPR taking into account the characteristics of the tumor, the size of bone defect, and the need for external irradiation therapy.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The goal behind this study is to answer the question "In tooth-supported fixed partial dentures (FPDs), does the digital impression techniques compared to fabrications using conventional impression methods improve the marginal and internal fit?
BACKGROUND
The incorporation of digital technology in the fabrication of fixed partial dentures (FPDs) has accelerated over the past decade. This study is directed at evaluating the marginal and internal fit of FPDs manufactured using digital approaches compared to conventional techniques. The need for updated data has encouraged this review.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
An electronic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Grey Database to identify relevant studies. The Modified Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS) was used to assess the risk of bias in in vitro experiments. The key results of this meta-analysis were the standard mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of each main variance, marginal fit, and internal fit between the digital and conventional techniques. Additional analyses were performed to assess the significance of three subgroup parameters: method of digitalization, cement spacer thickness, and span length, and their influence on the fit of the FPDs.
RESULTS
Based on predefined criteria, of the seven articles included in this systematic review, only five were selected for the quantitative data analysis. The marginal fit results were (P = 0.06; SMD: -1.88; 95% CI: - 3.88, 0.11) (P > 0.05) and the internal fit results were (P = 0.02; SMD: -0.80; 95% CI: - 1.49, - 0.10) (P < 0.05). Regarding the subgroup analyses, the method of digitalization subgroup results were (P = 0.35; SMD: -1.89; 95% CI: - 3.89, 0.11) and (P = 0.80; SMD: -0.80; 95% CI: - 1.49, - 0.11) for marginal and internal fit, respectively. The span length results were (P = 0.10; SMD: -1.89; 95% CI: - 3.89, 0.11) for marginal fit and (P = 0.02; SMD: -0.80; 95% CI: - 1.49, - 0.11) for internal fit. The cement spacer thickness (P = 0.01; SMD: -1.89; 95% CI: - 3.89, 0.11) and (P = 0.04; SMD: -0.80; 95% CI: - 1.49, - 0.11) for marginal and internal fit, respectively.
CONCLUSION
Tooth-retained fixed partial dentures FPDs produced by digital scanning and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems can significantly enhance the internal fit compared with those manufactured by traditional methods. Intraoral scanners can replace conventional impressions for the fabrication of FPDs because they minimize the operating time and reduce patient pain. Further clinical studies are required to obtain more conclusive results.
