BACKGROUND
Despite its significant prevalence worldwide, atopy and allergic diseases continue to need more studies, with a need for published articles describing the prevalence of atopy and allergic diseases in Saudi society. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of atopic dermatitis diseases among college students at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University.
METHODS
The Cross-sectional study was conducted in Saudi Arabia among college students at Imam Mohammed bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh based on self-report Asthma and Allergies questionnaires (ISSAC questionnaire, atopic dermatitis part).
RESULTS
Seven hundred ninety-seven (797) students from 11 colleges participated in the study. About half (47.6%) aged between 21 and 24, and 73.7% were females. More than one-third (34.8%) had atopic dermatitis during the last six months, while 30.7% of the participants reported having itchy rash in the past 12 months, and 33.8% were diagnosed with eczema in any life interval. Age is not one of the significant factors affecting the prevalence of atopic dermatitis. However, the prevalence of atopic dermatitis slightly increases with age ( = 0.062). Atopic dermatitis was significantly higher among female students (39.7%) than 21.0% among male students ( = 0.000). College level nor GPA had no significant impact on the prevalence of atopic dermatitis ( = 0.238 and 0.884, respectively).
CONCLUSION
Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University students have a high prevalence of atopic dermatitis, which may indicate a higher prevalence of allergens. Females and older participants were more liable to reported atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND
"Kratom" refers to an array of bioactive products derived from , a tree indigenous to Southeast Asia. Most kratom consumers report analgesic and stimulatory effects, and common reasons for use are to address mental and physical health needs, manage pain, and to reduce use of other substances. Natural-history studies and survey studies suggest that many kratom consumers perceive benefits from those uses, but such studies are unlikely to capture the full range of kratom-use experiences.
METHODS
We collected text data from Reddit posts from 2020-2022 to qualitatively examine conceptualizations, motivations, effects, and consequences associated with kratom use among people posting to social media. Reddit posts mentioning kratom were studied using template thematic analysis, which included collecting descriptions of kratom product types and use practices. Network analyses of coded themes was performed to examine independent relationships among themes, and between themes and product types.
RESULTS
Codes were applied to 329 of the 370 posts that comprised the final sample; 134 posts contained kratom product descriptions. As Reddit accounts were functionally anonymous, demographic estimates were untenable. Themes included kratom physical dependence (tolerance, withdrawal, or use to avoid withdrawal), perceived addiction (net detrimental effects on functioning), and quitting. Extract products were positively associated with reports of perceived addiction, dependence, and experiences of quitting kratom. Many used kratom for energy and self-treatment of pain, fatigue, and problems associated with opioid and alcohol; they perceived these uses as effective. Consumers expressed frustrations about product inconsistencies and lack of product information.
CONCLUSION
As in previous studies, kratom was deemed helpful for some and a hindrance to others, but we also found evidence of notable negative experiences with kratom products that have not been well documented in surveys. Daily kratom use may produce mild-moderate physical dependence, with greater severity being possibly more common with concentrated extracts; however, there are currently no human laboratory studies of concentrated kratom extracts. Such studies, and detailed kratom product information, are needed to help inform consumer decision-making.

OBJECTIVE
To compare adolescent and caregiver reports of adolescent adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their relationship with current adolescent depression and to analyze the relationship between ACEs and depression.
METHODS
We recruited 46 adolescent-caregiver dyads from a large, inner-city medical center's adolescent medicine clinic. Adolescents and caregivers completed the Center for Youth Wellness ACE questionnaire, encompassing traditional ACEs (eg, abuse, neglect, household dysfunction) and nontraditional ACEs (eg, foster care, parental death, exposure to community violence). Adolescents also completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9A (PHQ-9A) depression screening tool.
RESULTS
Among adolescents, 14 (30%) reported no traditional ACEs, 11 (24%) reported 1, and 21 (46%) reported more than 1. Regarding nontraditional ACEs, 16 (35%) reported none, 11 (24%) reported 1, and 19 (41%) reported more than 1. Caregiver reports consistently indicated lower ACEs compared with adolescent self-reports ( < .005). For the PHQ-9A scores, 26 (57%) of adolescents showed no or minimal depression, 14 (30%) mild, and 6 (13%) moderate depression. A moderate positive correlation emerged between PHQ-9A scores and self-reported traditional ACEs (r = 0.5, < .001) and nontraditional ACEs (r = 0.49, < .001). In addition, a positive correlation was observed between the absolute differences in adolescent and caregiver reports of traditional ACEs and PHQ-9A scores (n = 46, ρ = 0.51, < .001).
CONCLUSIONS
As the differences in ACE reports between adolescents and caregivers increased, there was a corresponding increase in adolescent depression scores. It is essential to incorporate comprehensive ACE screening and encourage open communication between adolescents and caregivers, which may improve mental health outcomes.

INTRODUCTION
Parents who do not feel responsible for parent-child sexual communication (PCSC) may be missing out on opportunities to engage in PCSC that has protective effects on children's sexual well-being. Using the theory of planned behavior and feminist theory, we explore how parents' PCSC attitudes and demographics are associated with perceptions of who is responsible for PCSC.
METHODS
Using data collected in December 2019 through January 2020 from parents of 6-11-year-olds, we ran chi-square tests, ANOVAs, and logistic regressions to determine how parent PCSC attitudes and other parental factors are associated with parent perceptions of who is responsible for PCSC.
RESULTS
The majority of parents saw themselves and/or a co-parent as primarily responsible for PCSC about facts and values. Bivariately, parents with higher scores of perceived positive PCSC outcomes, subjective norms, and self-efficacy were more likely to believe that they were solely responsible or shared an equal responsibility for PCSC. Multivariately, mothers and genderqueer parents, parents with the same gender as their child, and parents whose co-parent was less involved in parenting were more likely to report being solely responsible for PCSC.
CONCLUSIONS
Most parents saw themselves or a partner as most responsible for PCSC; parent and child gender were the strongest determinants of parents' perceptions of PCSC responsibility.
POLICY IMPLICATIONS
These results suggest that it may be more effective for parent education to challenge and deconstruct traditional gender roles versus focusing on self-efficacy, norms, and perceived outcomes if we want to increase parents' perceived PCSC responsibility, especially within different-gender parent-child dyads.

American Journal of Health Behavior Jan 2024Given that low early (4 weeks) weight loss (WL) predicts longer-term WL, the purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with poor early WL.
OBJECTIVE
Given that low early (4 weeks) weight loss (WL) predicts longer-term WL, the purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with poor early WL.
METHODS
438 adults with overweight/obesity participating in an Internet-delivered behavioral WL program provided weights at baseline and 4 weeks. Participants were stratified by percent WL at 4 weeks: LOW: <2% WL, MEDIUM: 2 to <4% WL, HIGH: ≥4% WL and groups were compared on baseline variables (demographics, physical activity, and psychosocial measures) and 4-week intervention adherence.
RESULTS
37.4%, 40.9%, and 21.7% of participants had LOW, MEDIUM, and HIGH early WL respectively. LOW was more likely to be female compared to HIGH and less likely to be non-Hispanic White compared to MEDIUM and HIGH (p's<0.05). After controlling for demographic differences, LOW had lower baseline physical activity compared to HIGH and watched fewer video lessons, self-monitored calorie intake and weight on fewer days, and were less likely to achieve the exercise goal compared to MEDIUM and HIGH (p's<0.05).
CONCLUSION
Findings can inform future adaptive interventions which tailor treatment based upon early WL to improve WL outcomes for more individuals.

: Molecular imaging of microenvironment by hypoxia-activatable fluorescence probes has emerged as an attractive approach to tumor diagnosis and image-guided treatment. Difficulties remain in its translational applications due to hypoxia heterogeneity in tumor microenvironments, making it challenging to image hypoxia as a reliable proxy of tumor distribution. : We report a modularized theranostics platform to fluorescently visualize hypoxia via light-modulated signal compensation to overcome tumor heterogeneity, thereby serving as a diagnostic tool for image-guided surgical resection and photodynamic therapy. Specifically, the platform integrating dual modules of fluorescence indicator and photodynamic moderator using supramolecular host-guest self-assembly, which operates cooperatively as a cascaded "AND" logic gate. First, tumor enrichment and specific fluorescence turn-on in hypoxic regions were accessible via tumor receptors and cascaded microenvironment signals as simultaneous inputs of the "AND" gate. Second, image guidance by a lighted fluorescence module and light-mediated endogenous oxygen consumption of a photodynamic module as dual inputs of "AND" gate collaboratively enabled light-modulated signal compensation , indicating homogeneity of enhanced hypoxia-related fluorescence signals throughout a tumor. In and analyses, the biocompatible platform demonstrated several strengths including a capacity for dual tumor targeting to progressively facilitate specific fluorescence turn-on, selective signal compensation, imaging-time window extension conducive to precise normalized image-guided treatment, and the functionality of tumor glutathione depletion to improve photodynamic efficacy. The hypoxia-activatable, image-guided theranostic platform demonstrated excellent potential for overcoming hypoxia heterogeneity in tumors.

BACKGROUND
This study employed a phenomenological research approach within qualitative research to explore the challenges encountered by elderly individuals with temporary colostomies in managing their daily lives and care needs. Protecting the anus surgery combined with temporary colostomy has emerged as a prevalent treatment modality for low rectal cancer. However, the ileostomy is susceptible to peri-stoma skin complications, as well as fluid, electrolyte, and nutritional imbalances, posing challenges to effective management. The successful self-management of patients is intricately linked to their adjustment to temporary colostomy; nonetheless, there remains a dearth of research examining the factors influencing self-care among temporary colostomy patients and the obstacles they confront.
AIM
To investigate the lived experiences, perceptions, and care requirements of temporary colostomy patients within their home environment, with the ultimate goal of formulating a standardized management protocol.
METHODS
Over the period of June to August 2023, a purposive sampling technique was utilized to select 12 patients with temporary intestinal stomas from a tertiary hospital in Shanghai, China. Employing a phenomenological research approach, a semi-structured interview guide was developed, and qualitative interviews were conducted using in-depth interview techniques. The acquired data underwent coding, analysis, organization, and summarization following Colaizzi's seven-step method.
RESULTS
The findings of this study revealed that the experiences and needs of patients with temporary intestinal stomas can be delineated into four principal themes: Firstly, Temporary colostomy patients bear various burdens and concerns about the uncertainty of disease progression; secondly, patients exhibit limited self-care capabilities and face information deficits, resulting in heightened reliance on healthcare professionals; thirdly, patients demonstrate the potential for internal motivation through proactive self-adjustment; and finally, patients express a significant need for emotional and social support.
CONCLUSION
Home-living patients with temporary intestinal stomas confront multifaceted challenges encompassing burdens, inadequate self-care abilities, informational deficits, and emotional needs. Identifying factors influencing patients' self-care at home and proposing strategies to mitigate barriers can serve as a foundational framework for developing and implementing nursing interventions tailored to the needs of patients with temporary intestinal stomas.

PURPOSE
Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a lifelong condition associated with poorer outcomes than neurotypical peers, yet relatively little is known about long-term quality of life in DLD. This preliminary study adopts a neurodiversity-informed approach by exploring quality of life in an adolescent and young adult DLD sample, as well as linguistic and risk factors contributing to quality of life.
METHOD
Participants were five individuals with DLD aged 12-20 years (M = 15.60; SD = 3.05). I administered two self-report quality of life scales, a language assessment, an experimental morphosyntax task, and measures of risk factors. Data were analyzed descriptively.
RESULTS
Participants generally reported positive views about their quality of life, though accessing accommodations and health services emerged as barriers. Relatively better grammaticality judgement performance appeared to be linked with poorer ratings of happiness and the ability to 'be yourself.' Nonverbal ability represented a potential risk factor, though there may be a stronger cumulative role for risk factors.
CONCLUSIONS
DLD participants reported relatively good quality of life. Exploratory findings suggest barriers to quality of life in some contexts, as well as roles for individual differences in language and risk factors. These descriptive findings should be examined in larger scale studies and may represent areas of consideration when clinicians address functional challenges that impact mental health and wellbeing in individuals with DLD.

People with mosaicism for trisomy 21 have been shown to exhibit the many of same phenotypic traits present in people with non-mosaic Down syndrome, but with varying symptom severity. However, the behavioral phenotype of people with mosaic Down syndrome (mDS) has not been well characterized. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of self-report and caregiver-report symptoms of depression and anxiety among a sample of 62 participants with mDS aged 12 - 46, and assess their association with the percentage of trisomy 21 in blood and/or buccal mucosa cells. The results showed that 53% of the participants reported clinically significant depression symptoms and 76% reported clinically significant anxiety symptoms. No clear associations were observed between the percentage of trisomic cells and total anxiety or depression, but a significant positive association between the proband-reported specific fears subscale and the percentage of trisomic cells in buccal specimens was detected ( = .43, = .007). This study highlights the high occurrence of depression and anxiety symptoms in individuals with mDS and the need for routine assessment to optimize their care. It also demonstrates the ability of people with mDS to complete these evaluations, thereby supporting their inclusion in research studies/clinical trials.

Environmental sustainability is characterized by a conflict between short-term self-interest and longer-term collective interests. Self-control capacity has been proposed to be a crucial determinant of people's ability to overcome this conflict. Yet, causal evidence is lacking, and previous research is dominated by the use of self-report measures. Here, we modulated self-control capacity by applying inhibitory high-definition transcranial current stimulation (HD-tDCS) above the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) while participants engaged in an environmentally consequential decision-making task. The task includes conflicting and low conflicting trade-offs between short-term personal interests and long-term environmental benefits. Contrary to our preregistered expectation, inhibitory HD-tDCS above the left dlPFC, presumably by reducing self-control capacity, led to more, and not less, pro-environmental behavior in conflicting decisions. We speculate that in our exceptionally environmentally friendly sample, deviating from an environmentally sustainable default required self-control capacity, and that inhibiting the left dlPFC might have reduced participants' ability to do so.
