BACKGROUND
Autogenous particulate dentin (APD) has been used as a bone graft material for bone augmentation, but the specifics of its effect on alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) are uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and histomorphometric performance of APD compared with blood clot healing or other grafted materials in ARP.
METHODS
MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus and the Cochrane Library and citation databases were searched until August 2, 2023 to identify randomized controlled trials that employed APD for ARP. Two independent meta-analyses were performed based on the different control groups (Group I: blood clot healing; Group II: other grafted materials). Weighted or mean differences (MDs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. The protocol was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023409339).
RESULTS
A total of 238 records were identified, of which ten studies with 182 participants were included. The meta-analysis indicated that APD resulted in fewer changes in horizontal ridge width (Group I: MD = 1.61, 95% CI 0.76-2.46; Group II: MD = 1.28, 95% CI 1.08-1.48) and labial bone height (Group I: MD = 1.75, 95% CI 0.56-2.94; Group II: P < .05) than the control treatments. Regarding histomorphometry, APD yielded a satisfactory proportion of vital bone area (MD = 10.51, 95% CI 4.70-16.32) and residual material area (MD = -8.76, 95% CI -12.81 to -4.71) in Group II, while there was no significant difference in Group I. Moreover, none of the secondary outcomes were significantly differed between groups.
CONCLUSION
Within this study limitations, APD effectively maintained the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the extraction sockets and exhibited favorable osteogenic properties and degradation capacity. Further well-designed randomized controlled trials with larger samples and longer follow-up periods are needed to evaluate whether APD is superior to other substitutes for ARP.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
More conservative restorative approaches have been advocated for nonvital anterior teeth as an alternative to complete coverage crowns to maximize the preservation of tooth structure. Systematic reviews that investigated factors influencing the success rate of porcelain veneers on endodontically treated anterior teeth are lacking.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate factors influencing the success rate of porcelain veneers on endodontically treated anterior teeth.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Searches were performed across Medline/PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases. In addition, articles were hand searched from references of systematic reviews concerning porcelain veneers and endodontically treated teeth.
RESULTS
After screening and applying the eligibility, inclusion, and exclusion criteria, 7 articles met the inclusion criteria. Factors that could positively influence the success rate of endodontically treated anterior veneered teeth were immediate dentin sealing, labially positioning of the endodontic access cavity, and incorporating fiber posts.
CONCLUSIONS
The use of fiber posts and labial positioning of the endodontic access cavity could positively influence the success rate of porcelain veneers on endodontically treated teeth. The effect of immediate dentin sealing on the survival rate of endodontically treated veneered teeth is still unclear and further research is needed.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM
The presence of host collagenases in the degradation of the protein matrix at later stages of carious dentin lesions development, as well as the potential involvement of bacterial collagenases, have been suggested but lack conclusive evidence. This study aims to conduct a systematic review to comprehensively assess the profile of host and bacterial-derived collagenolytic proteases in both root and coronal dentin carious lesions.
METHODS
The search was performed in eight databases and the grey literature. Studies evaluating dentin, extracted teeth, or biofilms from natural caries lesions were included. The methodological quality of studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. Synthesis of the results and the certainty of evidence were performed following the Synthesis without Meta-analysis (SWiM) checklist and GRADE approach for narrative synthesis, respectively.
RESULTS
From 935 recovered articles, 18 were included. Although the evidence was very uncertain, it was possible to suggest that 1) MMP-2, MMP-9, MMP-13, and CT-B may be increased in carious dentin when compared to sound dentin; 2) there is no difference in MMP-2 presence, while MMP-13 may be increased in root when compared to coronal carious dentin; 3) there is no difference of MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression/activity before and after cavity sealing; 4) MMP-8 may be increased in the dentin before cavity sealing compared to dentin after cavity sealing; 5) there is no difference of MMP-20 in irradiated vs. non-irradiated carious dentin. MMP-20 probably reduces in carious outer dentin when compared to carious inner dentin (moderate certainty). Genes encoding bacterial collagenolytic proteases and protein-degrading bacteria were detected in coronal and root carious lesions.
CONCLUSION
Trends in the direction of the effect were observed for some collagenolytic proteases in carious dentin, which may represent a potential target for the development of new treatments. (Protocol register-PROSPERO: CRD42020213141).

OBJECTIVE
This study was aimed at comparing the performance of light-cured (LC) silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to non-LC SDF in dental applications, in terms of various properties.
METHODS
Articles published until April 2023 were retrieved from electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus and Science Direct) according to Boolean operators, and the reference lists of the included articles were manually searched. The included articles were all full-text, original studies in English that assessed the effects of LC SDF compared with SDF alone. The risk of bias in the in vitro studies on dental materials was evaluated with the modified Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) checklist.
RESULTS
Six studies (five in vitro and one ex vivo) were included in qualitative analysis after a comprehensive manual search and electronic database search. Every study compared LC SDF versus non-LC SDF in terms of properties such as penetration depth, silver ion precipitation, dentine hardness, surface morphology and anti-bacterial characteristics. Four studies were categorised as low quality with a high risk of bias, whereas the remaining two studies were considered high quality with a low risk of bias.
CONCLUSION
In this investigation, LC SDF, compared with non-LC SDF, was found to be an efficacious approach for enhancing SDF properties. Future high-quality studies, particularly randomised clinical trials, remain necessary to verify these findings.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The use of light curing with SDF can be a beneficial strategy that enhances SDF's clinical use. This review comparing various properties of LC SDF and non-LC SDF may help clinicians enhance clinical use and patient acceptance of LC SDF.

INTRODUCTION
Recently, clinical trials have assessed the effectiveness of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) as an indirect pulp capping material (IPC) in primary teeth. This systematic review aimed to assess the evidence presented in these trials.
DATA SOURCES
A comprehensive search identified relevant studies through five electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane). Search strategies were designed using the PICO model to identify all studies that investigated SDF as an IPC compared to calcium hydroxide (CaOH) or mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Quality assessment and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) were used to assess the level of evidence.
STUDY SELECTION
Four clinical trials were found to be suitable for inclusion in the qualitative synthesis and three studies were included in the quantitative analysis. Three studies compared SDF with CaOH and only one study compared SDF, CaOH, and MTA. Only one randomized controlled trial (RCT) had a low risk of bias, and the non-RCT study had a moderate risk of bias. The level of evidence based on the GRADE was low. Three out of four studies showed higher clinical and radiographic outcomes with SDF than with CaOH. One non-RCT study showed that SDF resulted in the least reparative dentin at the 6-months follow-up. The meta-analysis showed a non-significant difference between the SDF and CaOH groups (P = 0.36).
CONCLUSION
There is little evidence showing a higher clinical and radiographic outcome of SDF compared to CaOH as an IPC material in primary molars.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
This systematic review updates pediatric dentists regarding the effectiveness of using SDF as indirect pulp caping in primary teeth.

The aim of this study is to review the potential of strontium-doped nanohydroxyapatite (SrnHAP) as a biomaterial for remineralizing early carious lesions. Publications from 2012 to 2022 were included based on the patient/population, intervention, comparison, and outcomes (PICO) framework, focusing on demineralized enamel treated with strontium-doped nanohydroxyapatite compared to other remineralizing agents, with the primary outcome being remineralization capacity. Electronic databases, namely, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar, were explored from March 31, 2023, to April 10, 2023. Only English language studies were included, while certain research types and studies on bovine teeth were excluded. Bias was assessed using the Cochrane methodology. Five studies were synthesized, all using extracted human maxillary premolars. Four studies focused on remineralizing enamel, while one study focused on remineralizing dentin. Among these studies, comparisons were made between different strontium concentrations and various remineralizing agents such as nanohydroxyapatite (nHAP), Acclaim, casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), and NovaMin. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to examine hydroxyapatite formation, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used for characterization. Additionally, one study evaluated the mechanical properties of partially demineralized dentin specimens. This study was registered in the PROSPERO under the ID CRD42023397413 and completed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

OBJECTIVES
Different materials have been used for capping the pulp after exposure during caries removal in permanent teeth. The purpose of this study was to collate and analyze all pertinent evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on different materials used in patients undergoing pulpotomy or direct pulp capping in carious teeth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Trials comparing two or more capping agents used for direct pulp capping (DPC) or pulpotomy were considered eligible. An electronic search of four databases and two clinical trial registries was carried out up to February 28, 2021 using a search strategy properly adapted to the PICO framework. Screening, data extraction, and risk of bias (RoB) assessment of primary studies were performed in duplicate and independently. The primary outcome was clinical and radiological success; secondary outcomes included continued root formation, tooth discoloration, and dentin bridge formation.
RESULTS
21 RCTs were included in the study. The RoB assessment indicated a moderate risk among the studies. Due to significant clinical and statistical heterogeneity among the studies, performing network meta-analysis (NMA) was not possible. An ad hoc subgroup analysis revealed strong evidence of a higher success of DPC with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) compared to calcium hydroxide (CH) (odds ratio [OR] = 3.10, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.66-5.79). MTA performed better than CH in pulp capping (both DPC and pulpotomy) of mature compared to immature teeth (OR = 3.34, 95% CI: 1.81-6.17). The GRADE assessment revealed moderate strength of evidence for DPC and mature teeth, and low to very low strength of evidence for the remaining subgroups.
CONCLUSIONS
Considerable clinical and statistical heterogeneity among the trials did not allow NMA. The ad hoc subgroup analysis indicated that the clinical and radiographic success of MTA was higher than that of CH but only in mature teeth and DPC cases where the strength of evidence was moderate. OBJECTIVE
To compare the effectiveness of cyanoacrylate to other treatments or placebo in the management of dentin hypersensitivity (DH).
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The present review was organized based on the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The search aimed to answer the following question: is cyanoacrylate effective in the treatment of DH when compared to other treatments or placebo? The following databases were used: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, BVS, Web of Science, Cochrane, Clinicaltrials.gov, Portal Periódicos Capes, Google Scholar, and manual search. The evaluation process started with the information collected from the selected articles according to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT).
RESULTS
Two randomized and five nonrandomized clinical trials were analyzed in the qualitative synthesis. The studies presented different cyanoacrylate formulations, different scales for evaluating pain, and different methods for provoking a painful stimulus. Cyanoacrylate-based products reduce DH in shorter follow-up periods and this reduction persisted throughout the study. The results varied according to the methods used to stimulate the pain. Only two articles showed a low risk of bias and a high level of scientific evidence.
CONCLUSION
Although there is a limited number of studies in the scientific literature with appropriate methodological quality, the available evidence proves the effectiveness of cyanoacrylate in the treatment of DH. . Cyanoacrylate is easy to access, effective, easily applicable, and a low-cost product with satisfactory results.

BACKGROUND
The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the clinical efficacy (sensitivity reduction) and safety (gum damage) of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) as a tooth desensitizer for adults.
METHODS
The search strategy was developed and adapted from 12 databases. Two independent reviewers selected the studies in consensus with a third reviewer. Randomized clinical trials with adult volunteers affected by dentin hypersensitivity (DH), and receiving treatment with SDF were included. Studies with volunteers testing tooth whitening products, using some type of desensitizer, or taking analgesic or anti-inflammatory medication were excluded. The risk of bias was assessed according to the RoB 2 tool, and confidence in cumulative evidence, according to GRADE.
RESULTS
Only 3 articles were included. The average pain assessed using the visual analog scale was lower in the SDF groups than in the short-term control groups (24h to 7 days) (=0.0134 and =0.0015) of the two studies. The third study evaluated a combination of SDF and a CO laser, compared to using only SDF, and found no statistical difference between the two (=0.74). Inflammation and gingival staining were also evaluated in two of the three studies. No adverse effects were reported. All the included studies had a high risk of bias, and the certainty of the evidence was very low.
CONCLUSION
SDF can be used as a safe and effective tooth desensitizer in adults, with good results, as was achieved in a short-term follow-up. However, more studies with longer evaluation periods are required.

The selective caries removal approach leads to the need to use materials with the ability to remineralize remaining partially demineralized dentin. Among the materials proposed are resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGICs). The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate, based on in vitro experimental studies, whether RMGICs are suitable for remineralizing affected dentin. A systematic literature search was performed in four databases, followed by article selection, data extraction, and quality assessment. Studies assessing the remineralizing potential of RMGICs on dentin were included in our review. Studies which compared such properties between different RMGICs or with other materials were also eligible. The studies report the remineralizing ability of RMGICs, albeit with differences between different commercial products. RMGICs show a similar ability to conventional GICs to remineralize affected dentin, fulfilling the function for which they are designed. Moreover, the incorporation of additives, such as bioactive glass (BAG) or CCP-ACP, improves their remineralizing potential. The results of this review support the use of RMGICs as restorative materials after selective caries removal.
