OBJECTIVES
Nonthermal atmospheric or low-pressure plasma (NTP) can improve the surface characteristics of dental materials without affecting their bulk properties. This study aimed to systematically review the available scientific evidence on the effectiveness of using NTP for the surface treatment of etchable, silica-based dental ceramics before cementation, and elucidate its potential to replace the hazardous and technically demanding protocol of hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching.
METHODS
A valid search query was developed with the help of PubMed's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) vocabulary thesaurus and translated to three electronic databases: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed according to an adapted version of the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS).
RESULTS
Thirteen in vitro study reports published between 2008 and 2023 were selected for the qualitative and quantitative data synthesis. The implemented methodologies were diverse, comprising 19 different plasma treatment protocols with various device settings. Argon, helium, oxygen, or atmospheric air plasma may significantly increase the wettability and roughness of silicate ceramics by plasma cleaning, etching, and activation, but the treatment generally results in inferior bond strength values after cementation compared to those achieved with HF etching. The technically demanding protocol of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition was employed more commonly, in which the surface deposition of hexamethyl disiloxane with subsequent oxygen plasma activation proved the most promising, yielding bond strengths comparable to those of the positive control. Lack of power analysis, missing adequate control, absence of examiner blinding, and non-performance of specimen aging were common methodological frailties that contributed most to the increase in bias risk (mean MINORS score 15.3 ± 1.1).
SIGNIFICANCE
NTP can potentially improve the adhesive surface characteristics of dental silicate ceramics in laboratory conditions, but the conventional protocol of HF etching still performs better in terms of the resin-ceramic bond strength and longevity. More preclinical research is needed to determine the optimal NTP treatment settings and assess the aging of plasma-treated ceramic surfaces in atmospheric conditions.

Silk fibroin is a fibrillar protein obtained from arthropods such as mulberry and non-mulberry silkworms. Silk fibroin has been used as a dressing in wound treatment for its physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological properties. This systematic review analyzed studies from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases to identify the molecules preferred for functionalizing silk fibroin-based dressings and to describe their mechanisms of exhibiting anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The analysis of the selected articles allowed us to classify the dressings into different conformations, such as membranes, films, hydrogels, sponges, and bioadhesives. The incorporation of various molecules, including antibiotics, natural products, peptides, nanocomposites, nanoparticles, secondary metabolites, growth factors, and cytokines, has allowed the development of dressings that promote wound healing with antibacterial and immunomodulatory properties. In addition, silk fibroin-based dressings have been established to have the potential to regenerate wounds such as venous ulcers, arterial ulcers, diabetic foot, third-degree burns, and neoplastic ulcers. Evaluation of the efficacy of silk fibroin-based dressings in tissue engineering is an area of great activity that has shown significant advances in recent years.

With the rapid development of biodiesel, biodiesel-derived glycerol has become a promising renewable bioresource. The key to utilizing this bioresource lies in the value-added conversion of crude glycerol. While purifying crude glycerol into a pure form allows for diverse applications, the intricate nature of this process renders it costly and environmentally stressful. Consequently, technology facilitating the direct utilization of unpurified crude glycerol holds significant importance. It has been reported that crude glycerol can be bio-transformed or chemically converted into high-value polymers. These technologies provide cost-effective alternatives for polymer production while contributing to a more sustainable biodiesel industry. This review article describes the global production and quality characteristics of biodiesel-derived glycerol and investigates the influencing factors and treatment of the composition of crude glycerol including water, methanol, soap, matter organic non-glycerol, and ash. Additionally, this review also focused on the advantages and challenges of various technologies for converting crude glycerol into polymers, considering factors such as the compatibility of crude glycerol and the control of unfavorable factors. Lastly, the application prospect and value of crude glycerol conversion were discussed from the aspects of economy and environmental protection. The development of new technologies for the increased use of crude glycerol as a renewable feedstock for polymer production will be facilitated by the findings of this review, while promoting mass market applications.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common contemporary, treatable, genetic disorder that can be compatible with normal longevity. While current medical therapies are ubiquitous, they are limited by a lack of solid evidence, are often inadequate, poorly tolerated, and do not alter the natural disease course. As such, there has long been a need for effective, evidence-based, and targeted disease-modifying therapies for HCM. In this review, we redefine HCM as a treatable condition, evaluate current strategies for therapeutic intervention, and discuss novel myosin inhibitors. The majority of patients with HCM have elevated left ventricular outflow tract gradients, which predicts worse symptoms and adverse outcomes. Conventional pharmacological therapies for symptomatic HCM can help improve symptoms but are often inadequate and poorly tolerated. Septal reduction therapies (surgical myectomy and alcohol septal ablation) can safely and effectively reduce refractory symptoms and improve outcomes in patients with obstructive HCM. However, they require expertise that is not universally available and are not without risks. Currently, available therapies do not alter the disease course or the progressive cardiac remodeling that ensues, nor subsequent heart failure and arrhythmias. This has been regarded as an unmet need in the care of HCM patients. Novel targeted pharmacotherapies, namely cardiac myosin inhibitors, have emerged to reverse key pathophysiological changes and alter disease course. Their favorable outcomes led to the early Food and Drug Administration approval of mavacamten, a first-in-class myosin modulator, changing the paradigm for the pharmacological treatment of HCM.

Evaluation of marginal bone level, technical and biological complications between screw-retained and cement-retained all-ceramic implant-supported crowns on zirconia abutment: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference in marginal bone level, technical and biological complications between screw-retained and cemented all-ceramic implant-supported crowns fabricated on zirconia abutment at different follow-up periods.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Independent search was conducted in Cochrane Library, EBSCO, and PubMed/PubMed Central/MEDLINE databases and the Google Scholar search engine for prospective studies and randomized controlled trials published between January 2014 and June 2023 evaluating the marginal bone level, technical and biological complications between screw-retained and cemented all-ceramic implant-supported crowns fabricated on zirconia abutment. Meta-analysis was conducted to assess the quantitative data on the marginal bone level and biological complications.
RESULTS
A total of eight studies were included for qualitative synthesis and six studies for quantitative synthesis. For marginal bone level, no statistically significant difference was observed (P = 0.83 and P = 0.69, respectively) during the follow-up period of 3 years and 5 years. For probing depth, the cemented group showed more amount of probing depth than the screw-retained group at a follow-up period of 3 years (P < 0.05) whereas no statistically significant difference was observed at a follow-up period of 5 years (P = 0.73). For bleeding on probing, the cemented group showed more probing depth than the screw-retained group at a follow-up period of 5 years (P = 0.10).
CONCLUSION
The evidence suggests that the screw-retained group showed no statistically significant difference in marginal bone level, comparatively fewer biological complications, and relatively higher technical complications than the cemented group at different follow-up periods.

BACKGROUND
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of sclerotherapy methods for hemorrhoidal disease (HD) over the past 40 years.
METHODS
The review followed the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was conducted, including studies reporting the use of sclerotherapy in patients with HD. Study eligibility criteria were defined, and data were extracted independently by the authors. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to assess outcomes of interest.
RESULTS
Out of 1965 records identified, 44 studies met the inclusion criteria, involving 9729 patients. The majority of studies were conducted in Japan, followed by the UK, Italy, and Portugal. The median age of participants was 52 years, and the majority were male. The Goligher grade distribution indicated varying degrees of HD severity. Sclerotherapy was predominantly administered through anoscopy, with polidocanol being the most commonly used agent. The procedure was generally performed without pre-injection analgesia. The meta-analysis of 14 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) revealed that sclerotherapy was not inferior to control interventions in terms of success rate (risk ratio [RR] 1.00, 95% CI 0.71-1.41) and recurrence rate (RR 1.11, 95% CI 0.69-1.77), while resulting in fewer complications (RR 0.46, 95% CI 0.23-0.92).
CONCLUSIONS
This systematic review highlights the safety and efficacy of sclerotherapy for HD, which yields similar success rates and fewer complications compared to other conservative or surgical approaches. Further research is warranted to optimize sclerotherapy techniques and evaluate long-term outcomes.

Diabetes affected 537 million adults in 2021, costing a total of USD 966 billion dollars in healthcare. One of the most common complications associated with diabetes corresponds to the development of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). DFUs affect around 15% of diabetic patients; these ulcers have impaired healing due to neuropathy, arterial disease, infection, and aberrant extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, among other factors. The bioactive-glass-based materials discussed in this systematic review show promising results in accelerating diabetic wound healing. It can be concluded that the addition of BG is extremely valuable with regard to the wound healing rate and wound healing quality, since BG activates fibroblasts, enhances M1-to-M2 phenotype switching, induces angiogenesis, and initiates the formation of granulation tissue and re-epithelization of the wound. In addition, a higher density and deposition and better organization of collagen type III are seen. This systematic review was made using the PRISMA guideline and intends to contribute to the advancement of diabetic wound healing therapeutic strategies development by providing an overview of the materials currently being developed and their effect in diabetic wound healing in vitro and in vivo.

Hereditary optic neuropathies (HONs) such as dominant optic atrophy (DOA) and Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) are mitochondrial diseases characterized by a degenerative loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and are a cause of blindness worldwide. To date, there are only limited disease-modifying treatments for these disorders. The discovery of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology has opened several promising opportunities in the field of HON research and the search for therapeutic approaches. This systematic review is focused on the two most frequent HONs (LHON and DOA) and on the recent studies related to the application of human iPSC technology in combination with biomaterials technology for their potential use in the development of RGC replacement therapies with the final aim of the improvement or even the restoration of the vision of HON patients. To this purpose, the combination of natural and synthetic biomaterials modified with peptides, neurotrophic factors, and other low- to medium-molecular weight compounds, mimicking the ocular extracellular matrices, with human iPSC or iPSC-derived cell retinal progenitors holds enormous potential to be exploited in the near future for the generation of transplantable RGC populations.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic disorder caused by abnormal collagen type I production. While OI is primarily characterized by bone fragility and deformities, patients also have extraskeletal manifestations, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the literature on cardiovascular diseases in OI patients in order to raise awareness of this understudied clinical aspect of OI and support clinical guidelines. In accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus was conducted that included articles from the inception of these databases to April 2023. Valvular disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and hypertension appear to be more prevalent in OI than in control individuals. Moreover, a larger aortic root was observed in OI compared to controls. Various cardiovascular diseases appear to be more prevalent in OI than in controls. These cardiovascular abnormalities are observed in all types of OI and at all ages, including young children. As there are insufficient longitudinal studies, it is unknown whether these abnormalities are progressive in nature in OI patients. Based on these findings, we would recommend referring individuals with OI to a cardiologist with a low-threshold.

In this systematic review the topical hemostatic properties of Cyanoacrylate Adhesives (CA) have been studied. Four major scientific databases (Embase, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science) were inquired, retrieving reviews and meta-analysis studies, clinical trials, experimental studies, and case reports that presented data regarding topical hemostasis and CA. English written articles, published in the last 10 years were collected. The last search was performed on the 1st of August 2023. Risk of bias in the included studies was assessed using study-design specific, evidence-based tools. A summary focused on relevant information of all included studies was drafted and the results of the studies have been synthetized and compared. A total of 42 studies have been included in the review (14 reviews and meta-analysis, 11 clinical trials, 9 experimental studies and 8 case reports). CA exhibited important topical hemostatic capabilities, comparable with other performant hemostatic materials. Although most included studies concluded that CA were potent topical hemostatic agents, the high level of heterogeneity among the studies prevented us from performing a meta-analysis. The results of this review show that CA-based compounds represent an important line of research towards the perfect hemostatic material.
