PURPOSE
Aims to provide an overview of the contemporary epidemiology of malignant orbital tumors by analyzing population-based incidence patterns across various regions worldwide.
METHODS
In this article, we retrieved orbital malignancy data from the MEDLINE database and analyzed the incidence and prevalence of orbital malignancies worldwide. We performed the literature search by searching on the Mesh terms for malignant orbital tumors ("orbital", "tumor", "lymphoma", "malignant", "cancer", "incidence", and "epidemiology"). All included studies were published between 1993 and 2023 and were written in English.
RESULTS
Ocular or ophthalmic lymphoma most frequently occurred in the orbit, with a prevalence ranging from 47% to 54%. The incidence of malignant orbital tumors was increasing in the USA (2.0 per million (1981-1993), Netherlands (0.86 (1981-1985) to 2.49 (2001-2005) per million) and South Korea (0.3-0.8 per million (1999-2016)), respectively. Ophthalmic lymphoma which includes orbit lymphoma was increasing in Canada (0.17-1.47 per million (1992-2010)), Denmark (0.86 per million (1981-1985) to 2.49 per million (2001-2005)), respectively.
CONCLUSIONS
The predominant primary malignant orbital tumor in adults was lymphoma. Ocular or ophthalmic lymphoma most frequently occured in the orbit. The limited data available suggested an increasing trend in the incidence of malignant orbital tumors in each country included, which were mainly attributed to the increase in lymphoma. Generally, incidence rates were found to increase with advancing age, with no difference between males and females.

In patients with poorly controlled diabetes, early recognition of rare fungal infections like pulmonary mucormycosis, especially when presenting with unusual complications such as broncho-esophageal fistula, is critical. Prompt intervention with antifungal therapy and consideration for surgical debridement significantly impact outcomes. Multidisciplinary management is paramount for such complex cases.
ABSTRACT
Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection caused by the Mucorales. This infection is mostly observed among those with poorly controlled diabetes or immunodeficiency. The most common presentation of the infection among those with poorly controlled diabetes is rhino-orbit-cerebral involvement. In this case report, we provide the history and outcome of a rare case of pulmonary mucormycosis in a patient with poorly controlled diabetes who was simultaneously diagnosed with broncho-esophageal fistula. Our patient was a 32-year-old male with a history of poorly controlled diabetes. Over the months, he had complained of productive coughs and dyspnea, which had lately been joined by dysphagia. He also claimed to have lost considerable weight (10 kg) during the previous 3 months. Barium swallow showed an abnormal flow of contrast between the bronchus and esophagus, suggesting a broncho-esophageal fistula. Computed tomography of the thorax revealed a broncho-esophageal fistula between the left main bronchus (LMB) and esophagus. He had a bronchoscopy the next day, which revealed necrosis and a broncho-esophageal fistula in the LMB. A bronchial biopsy showed typical hyphae with necrotic tissue, indicating mucormycosis. The patient's antimycotic medication (liposomal amphotericin) was started and a prompt surgery consult was ordered. The patient, however, passed away from massive hemoptysis. We described a rare case of pulmonary mucormycosis with broncho-esophageal fistula in a patient with poorly controlled diabetes. The rarity of this combination highlights the associated diagnostic and treatment hurdles. Early detection, antifungal medication, as soon as possible surgical debridement of involved tissues, and a multidisciplinary approach could improve patient outcomes.

Impact of an intergenerational program to improve loneliness and social isolation in older adults initiated at the time of emergency department discharge: study protocol for a three-arm randomized clinical trial.
BACKGROUND
Social isolation and loneliness (SIL) worsens mortality and other outcomes among older adults as much as smoking. We previously tested the impact of the HOW R U? intervention using peer support from similar-aged volunteers and demonstrated reduced SIL among older adults discharged from the emergency department (ED). Generativity, defined as "the interest in establishing and guiding the next generation," can provide an alternative theoretical basis for reducing SIL via intergenerational programs between members of younger and older generations. The current protocol will examine the impact of younger intergenerational volunteers providing the HOW RU?
METHODS
In this randomized clinical trial, we will compare the following three arms: (1) the standard same-generation peer support HOW R U? intervention, (2) HOW R U? intervention delivered by intergenerational volunteers, and (3) a common wait-list control group. Outcome assessors will be blinded to the intervention. Trained volunteers will deliver 12 weekly telephone support calls. We will recruit participants ≥ 70 years of age with baseline loneliness (six-item De Jong loneliness score of 2 or greater) from two EDs. Research staff will assess SIL, depression, quality of life, functional status, generativity, and perceived benefit at baseline, at 12 weeks, and 24 weeks post-intervention.
DISCUSSION
We hypothesize participants receiving the intergenerational intervention will show improved outcomes compared to the control group and peer support HOW R U?
INTERVENTION
We also hypothesize that participants with higher perceptions of generativity will have greater reductions in SIL than their lower generativity counterparts. Aging is experienced diversely, and social interventions combatting associated SIL should reflect that diversity. As part of a program of research following the Obesity-Related Behavioral Intervention Trials (ORBIT) model, the findings of this RCT will be used to define which intervention characteristics are most effective in reducing SIL.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of orbital wall decompression surgery and reduction of proptosis on the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in patients with thyroid eye disease (TED). Fifty-one eyes from 38 patients with controlled TED and proptosis were enrolled in this study. The majority of the patients (50.9%) had a clinical activity score (CAS) of zero, and none had a CAS greater than 2. The patients underwent a complete baseline ophthalmologic examination, and their choroidal profile alterations were monitored using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) before and during the three months after surgery. Changes in SFCT, luminance area (LA), total choroidal area (TCA), and the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) were measured as the ratio of LA to TCA in EDI-OCT images. The participants had an average age of 46.47 years, and 22 were female (57.9%). The SFCT of the patients exhibited a significant reduction over the follow-up period, decreasing from 388 ± 103 to 355 ± 95 µm in the first month (p < 0.001) and further decreasing to 342 ± 109 µm by the third month compared to baseline (p < 0.001). The CVI exhibited a drop from 0.685 ± 0.037 at baseline to 0.682 ± 0.035 and 0.675 ± 0.030 at 1 and 3 months post-surgery, respectively. However, these changes were not statistically significant, indicating comparable decreases in both LA and TCA. There was a significant correlation between improved proptosis and reduction in SFCT (p < 0.001) but not with CVI (p = 0.171). In conclusion, during the three months of follow-up following orbital wall decompression, CVI did not change, while SFCT reduced significantly. Additionally, SFCT was significantly correlated with proptosis reduction, whereas CVI was not.

BACKGROUND
Although the importance of quantitative SPECT has increased tremendously due to newly developed therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals, there are still no accreditation programs to harmonize SPECT imaging. Work is currently underway to develop an accreditation for quantitative Lu SPECT/CT. The aim of this study is to verify whether the positioning of the spheres within the phantom has an influence on the recovery and thus needs to be considered in SPECT harmonization. In addition, the effects of these recovery coefficients on a potential partial volume correction as well as absorbed-dose estimates are investigated.
METHODS
Using a low-dose CT of a SPECT/CT acquisition, a computerized version of the NEMA body phantom was created using a semi-automatic threshold-based method. Based on the mass-density map, the detector orbit, and the sphere centers, realistic SPECT acquisitions of all possible 720 sphere configurations of both the PET and the SPECT versions of the NEMA Body Phantom were generated using Monte Carlo simulations. SPECT reconstructions with different numbers of updates were performed without (CASToR) and with resolution modeling (STIR). Recovery coefficients were calculated for all permutations, reconstruction methods, and phantoms, and their dependence on the sphere positioning was investigated. Finally, the simulation-based findings were validated using SPECT/CT acquisitions of six different sphere configurations.
RESULTS
Our analysis shows that sphere positioning has a significant impact on the recovery for both of the reconstruction methods and the phantom type. Although resolution modeling resulted in significantly higher recovery, the relative variation in recovery within the 720 permutations was even larger. When examining the extreme values of the recovery, reconstructions without resolution modeling were influenced primarily by the sphere position, while with resolution modeling the volume of the two adjacent spheres had a larger influence. The SPECT measurements confirmed these observations, and the recovery curves showed good overall agreement with the simulated data.
CONCLUSION
Our study shows that sphere positioning has a significant impact on the recovery obtained in NEMA sphere phantom measurements and should therefore be considered in a future SPECT accreditation. Furthermore, the single-measurement method normally performed for PVC should be reconsidered to account for the position dependency.

Polyimide (PI) is widely used in aerospace applications due to its excellent properties. However, the high concentration of atomic oxygen (AO) in low-earth orbit (LEO) significantly degrades its performance. This study employs reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to analyze the AO erosion resistance of fluorinated polyimide (FPI) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) composite polyimide models. The 35 ps simulation results indicate that the PI/POSS composite exhibits the best protective performance. The protection mechanism involves the formation of an SiO carbonized layer that prevents the transmission of AO and heat to the polyimide matrix, resulting in a normalized mass of 84.1% after erosion. The FPI model shows the second-best protective effect, where the introduction of -CF groups enhances the thermal stability of the polyimide matrix, resulting in a normalized mass of 80.7% after erosion. This study explores the protective effects and mechanisms of different polyimide protection methods at the molecular level, providing new insights for the design of AO erosion protection systems.

Space manipulators are expected to perform more challenging missions in on-orbit service (OOS) systems, but there are some unique characteristics that are not found on ground-based robots, such as dynamic coupling between space bases and manipulators, limited fuel supply, and working with unfixed bases. This paper focuses on trajectory-tracking control and internal force control for free-floating close-chain manipulators. First, the kinematics and dynamics of free-floating close-chain manipulators are given using the momentum conservation and spatial operator algebra (SOA) methodologies, respectively. Furthermore, an adaptive fuzzy integral sliding mode controller (AFISMC) based on time delay estimation (TDE) was designed for trajectory-tracking control, and a proportional-integral (PI) control strategy was adopted for internal force control. The global asymptotic stability of the proposed controller was proven by using the Lyapunov methodology. Three cases were conducted to verify the efficiency of the controller by using numerical simulations on two six-link manipulators with a free-floating base. The controller presents the desired tracking capability.

InBi is a topological nodal line semimetal with strong spin-orbit coupling. It is epitaxially compatible with III-V semiconductors and, hence, an attractive material for topological spintronics. However, growth by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is challenging owing to the low melting point of InBi and the tendency to form droplets. We investigate approaches for epitaxial growth of InBi films on InSb(001) substrates using MBE and periodic supply epitaxy (PSE). It was not possible to achieve planar, stoichiometric InBi heteroepitaxy using MBE growth over the parameter space explored. However, pseudomorphic growth of ultra-thin InBi(001) layers could be achieved by PSE on InSb(001). A remarkable change to the in-plane epitaxial orientation is observed.

Review
Spintronics, utilizing both the charge and spin of electrons, benefits from the nonvolatility, low switching energy, and collective behavior of magnetization. These properties allow the development of magnetoresistive random access memories, with magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) playing a central role. Various spin logic concepts are also extensively explored. Among these, spin logic devices based on the motion of magnetic domain walls (DWs) enable the implementation of compact and energy-efficient logic circuits. In these devices, DW motion within a magnetic track enables spin information processing, while MTJs at the input and output serve as electrical writing and reading elements. DW logic holds promise for simplifying logic circuit complexity by performing multiple functions within a single device. Nevertheless, the demonstration of DW logic circuits with electrical writing and reading at the nanoscale is still needed to unveil their practical application potential. In this review, we discuss material advancements for high-speed DW motion, progress in DW logic devices, groundbreaking demonstrations of current-driven DW logic, and its potential for practical applications. Additionally, we discuss alternative approaches for current-free information propagation, along with challenges and prospects for the development of DW logic.
