Sewage sludge applications release contaminants to agricultural soils, such as potentially toxic metals and microplastics (MPs). However, factors determining the subsequent mobility of MPs in long-term field conditions are poorly understood. This study aimed to understand the vertical distribution of MPs in soils amended with sewage sludge in comparison to conventional mineral fertiliser for 24 years. The depth-dependent MP mass and number concentrations, plastic types, sizes and shapes were compared with the distribution of organic carbon and metals to provide insights into potentially transport-limiting factors. Polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene mass concentrations were screened down to 90 cm depth via pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. MP number concentrations, additional plastic types, sizes, and shapes were analysed down to 40 cm depth using micro-Fourier transform-infrared imaging. Across all depths, MP numbers were twice and mass concentrations 8 times higher when sewage sludge was applied, with a higher share of textile-related plastics, more fibres and on average larger particles than in soil receiving mineral fertiliser. Transport of MPs beyond the plough layer (0-20 cm) is often assumed negligible, but substantial MP numbers (42 %) and mass (52 %) were detected down to 70 cm in sewage sludge-amended soils. The initial mobilization of MPs was shape- and size-dependent, because the fractions of fragmental-shaped and relatively small MPs increased directly below the plough layer, but not at greater depths. The sharp decline of total MP concentrations between 20 and 40 cm depth resembled that of metals and organic matter suggesting similar transport limitations. We hypothesize that the effect of soil management, such as ploughing, on soil compactness and subsequent transport by bioturbation and via macropores drives vertical MP distribution over long time scales. Risk assessment in soils should therefore account for considerable MP displacement to avoid underestimating soil exposure.

Microplastics (MPs), emerging as significant pollutants, have been consistently detected in aquatic environments, with the Yangtze River experiencing a particularly severe level of microplastic pollution, exceeding all other watersheds in China. Polypropylene (PP), the plastic most abundantly found in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin, has less comprehensive research results into its toxic effects. Consequently, the present investigation employed zebrafish as a model organism to delve into the toxicological impacts of polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) with a diameter of 5 μm across varying concentrations (300 mg/L and 600 mg/L). Using histopathological, microbiota profiling, and transcriptomic approaches, we systematically evaluated the impact of PP-MPs exposure on the intestine and liver of zebrafish. Histopathological analysis revealed that exposure to PP-MPs resulted in thinner intestinal walls, damaged intestinal mucosa, and hepatic cellular damage. Intestinal microbiota profiling demonstrated that, the richness, uniformity, diversity, and homogeneity of gut microbes significantly increased after the PP-MPs exposure at high concentration. These alterations were accompanied by shifts in the relative abundance of microbiota associated with intestinal pathologies, suggesting a profound impact on the intestinal microbial community structure. Concurrently, hepatic transcriptome analysis and RT-qPCR indicated that the downregulation of pathways and genes associated with cell proliferation regulation and DNA damage repair mechanisms contributed to hepatic cellular damage, ultimately exerting adverse effects on the liver. Correlation analysis between the intestinal microbiota and liver transcriptome profiles further highlighted significant associations between intestinal microbiota and the downregulated hepatic pathways. Collectively, these results provide novel insights into the subacute toxicological mechanisms of PP-MPs in aquatic organisms and highlight the need for further research on the ecological and health risks associated with PP-MPs pollution.

The use of disposable face masks (DFMs) increased during the COVID-19 pandemic and has become a threat to the environment due to the release of microplastics (MPs). Although many reports have characterized and explored the release of MPs from DFMs and their effects in aquatic ecosystems, there is a lack of investigation into the effects in terrestrial plants. This report aims to fill this research gap by characterizing whole mask leachates (WMLs) collected at different time points and examining their toxicity on Allium cepa, a terrestrial model plant. Various analytical techniques including FE-SEM, FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopy were used to identify MPs in WMLs. The MPs are composed of polypropylene mostly and the concentration of smaller-sized MPs increased with leachate release time. The WMLs showed a MP concentration-dependent cytogenotoxic effect (72 %, 50 %, and 31 %, on 1, 5, and 11-day WMLs, respectively) on A. cepa root cells due to elevated oxidative stress (19 %, 45 %, and 70 %, on 1, 5, and 11-day WMLs, respectively). Heavy metal content of the WMLs was negligible and, thus, not a significant contributor to toxicity in the plant. Overall, this report highlights the fate of DFMs in the environment and their biological impacts in a model plant.

Organic materials such as bark and biochar can be effective filter materials to treat stormwater. However, the efficiency of such filters in retaining microplastics (MPs) - an emerging stormwater pollutant - has not been sufficiently studied. This study investigated the removal and transport of a mixture of MPs commonly associated with stormwater. Different MP types (polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene) were mixed into the initial 2 cm material of horizontal bark and biochar filters of 25, 50, and 100 cm lengths. The MP types consisted of spherical and fragmented shapes in size ranges of 25-900 μm. The filters were subjected to a water flow of 5 mL/min for one week, and the total effluents were analyzed for MPs by μFTIR imaging. To gain a deeper insight, one 100 cm bark filter replica was split into 10 cm segments, and MPs in each segment were extracted and counted. The results showed that MPs were retained effectively, >97%, in all biochar and bark filters. However, MPs were detected in all effluents regardless of filter length. Effluent concentrations of 5-750 MP/L and 35-355 MP/L were measured in bark and biochar effluents, respectively, with >91% of the MP counts consisting of small-sized (25 μm) polyamide spherical particles. Combining all data, a decrease in average MP concentration was noticed with longer filters, likely attributed to channeling in a 25 and 50-cm filter. The analyses of MPs in the bark media revealed that most MPs were retained in the 0-10 cm segment but that some MPs were transported further, with 19% of polyamide retained in the 80-90 cm segment. Overall, this study shows promising results for bark and biochar filters to retain MPs, while highlighting the importance of systematic packing of filters to reduce MP emissions to the environment from polluted stormwater.

Despite numerous studies on microplastics, the biological impacts of polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) and its toxicity on freshwater fish have yet to be fully revealed. The purpose of this research was to look at the potentially harmful effects of PP-MPs in freshwater African catfish and bioremediation using . After acclimatization to laboratory conditions, 108 fish (125 ± 3 gm and 27 ± 2 cm) were assigned into triplicate six experimental groups (12 fish/group), a control group, group (SP), PP-MP-treated groups (0.14 and 0.28 mg/l PP-MPs), and PP-MP + -treated groups (0.14 mg/l PP-MPs + 200 mg/L SP and 0.28 mg/l PP-MPs +200 mg/L SP) for 15-day exposure and 45-day recovery after that. The hematological parameters exhibiting significance (RBCs, Hct, Hb, and MCV) or non-significance (MCH and MCHC) either decreased with the increase in PP-MP doses from 0.0 in the control to 0.28 mg/L red blood cells (RBCs), hematocrit (Hct), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), hemoglobin (Hb) and platelets or increased with such an increase in doses (mean corpuscular volume (MCV)). The liver enzyme activity, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) exhibited non-significant ( ≥ 0.05) or significant ( < 0.05) increases in (0.14 and 0.28 mg/L) PP-MP-exposed groups, respectively, except ALP. Furthermore, there was a significant ( < 0.05) or non-significant ( ≥ 0.05) increase in 0.14 and 0.28 mg/l PP-MP +200 mg/L-exposure groups, respectively, compared to the control group and the same exposure group without . In comparison to the control group, PP-MPs (0.14 and 0.28 mg/L) induced a significant ( < 0.05) increase in the percentage of poikilocytosis and nuclear abnormalities of RBCs. The liver tissue from fish exposed to PP-MPs exhibited varying degrees of pathological changes. These results indicated that these pathological changes increased with PP-MP concentration, suggesting that the effect of PP-MPs was dose-dependent. After 45 days of recovery under normal conditions, it was obvious that there was a significant improvement in the percentage of poikilocytosis and nuclear abnormalities of RBCs, as well as a non-significant improvement in hemato-biochemical parameters and liver tissue.

Microplastics (MPs) pose significant environmental pollution problems owing to their diverse properties such as various shapes, sizes, compositions, surface features, and levels of degradation. Moreover, their interactions with toxic chemicals and aging processes add complexity to environmental research. This study investigated the adsorption of triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) in soil-only, MP-only, and soil-MP simulated environments under different conditions. The experiment involved three phases: initial exposure to a pH of 5.5 under fluorescent light, subsequent introduction of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and pH adjustment to 4.0 and 7.0, while maintaining UV exposure, each lasting 7 days. The study found that environmental factors affected TPhP sorption capacity, with higher adsorption observed under UV radiation and acidic conditions. In contrast, the MP-only systems showed no clear trend for TPhP adsorption, suggesting kinetic limitations. When MPs were added to the soil, the adsorption dynamics were altered, with varying adsorption capacities observed for different MP polymers under different aging conditions. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and water contact angle measurements suggested potential photooxidation processes and changes in the surface hydrophobicity of the MPs subjected to simulated environmental conditions. This study provides valuable insights into the interplay between soil properties, MP characteristics, and environmental factors in determining TPhP sorption dynamics in soil-MP environments.

Sortation is a crucial step in mechanical recycling of post-consumer plastics (PCR) whereby properties such as density or spectral signature are used to separate plastics. However it is difficult to sort polyolefin flakes at high throughput by these properties. We ask whether the frictional properties of plastics as a function of temperature may be used as an alternate sorting property. However, fundamental studies of friction at temperatures near their melting points are limited. Here we measure the temperature dependence of kinetic friction for three common polyolefins (high and low den- sity polyethylene and polypropylene) as well as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), focusing on the softening/melting regime. The results are augmented by differential scanning calorimetry and temperature dependence measurements of both dynamic modulus and and probe tack. For the polyolefins, we find strong increases in the coefficients of kinetic friction during temperature ramps in the melting/softening regime. For the PET, we report a notable peak in the kinetic friction which we associate with the glass transition and cold-crystallization. We discuss the enhanced friction in the context of rub- ber friction, which exhibits comparable coefficients of kinetic frictions.

Microplastic (MP) pollution has been widely reported across water matrices including in estuaries, which are important for the understanding of oceanic MPs. Estuaries can greatly alter the fate, transport, size distribution, and abundance of plastic pollution. The aim of this study was to quantify and characterize MP pollution in the Delaware Bay estuary USA, including the size distribution. Samples (N = 31) were collected from the mouth of the Delaware River to the coastal ocean including multiple frontal zones across two sampling campaigns (2019 and 2022). MP were extracted from the collected particles using wet peroxide oxidation and density separation with saturated sodium chloride. Particles collected on 500 μm mesh sieves were analyzed via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Across all samples, 324 of the 1015 particles analyzed were MP, and 11 macroplastics were observed. MP concentrations ranged from below detection to 4.12 MP/m (mean 0.34 ± 0.80 MP/m). No significant differences were observed between sampling sites; nonetheless, the two highest MP concentrations were observed when sampling along frontal zones with visible debris including macroplastics. Polyethylene (53%) and polypropylene (43%) were the most abundant polymers observed. The majority of the non-plastic particles were classified as particulate natural organic matter (82% of non-plastics). Particles from samples collected during 2022 (N = 864) also had color, morphology, and two size dimensions recorded. MP particle size was significantly associated with sampling site, with the coastal ocean sampling site generally having the smallest MPs. A correlation between total post-extraction particles and total plastic particles was observed. Aspect ratios for the plastics ranged from one to 40.7, with larger ratios for fibers, with a mean (±standard deviation) of 3.39 ± 4.72 (unitless). These aspect ratios can be used to select shape factors used to estimate the total volume of MP in the studied size range. Overall, these results can help inform fate, transport, and risk assessments related to estuarine plastic pollution.

CONTEXT
To determine the miscibility of liquids at high temperatures using the concept of Hildebrand solubility parameter , the current practice is to examine the difference in between two liquids at room temperature, assuming that is not sensitive to temperature. However, such an assumption may not be valid for certain polymer blends and solutions. Therefore, a knowledge of the δ values of the liquids of interest at high temperatures is desirable. The determination of δ at high temperatures, especially for high-molecular-weight polymers, is impossible, as polymers have vapor pressures of zero. To this end, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations provide a practical means for determining δ over a wide range of temperatures. In this work, we study the temperature dependence of of five hydrocarbon polymers: polyethylene (PE), isotactic and atactic polypropylene (i-PP and a-PP), polyisobutylene (PIB), and polyisoprene (PI) in five hydrocarbon solvents: n-pentane, n-hexane, n-dodecane, isobutene, and cyclohexane. The polymers are modeled as monodisperse chains with 100 repeat units. The average δ values of PE, i-PP, a-PP, PIB, and PI at 300 K are determined as 18.6, 14.9, 14.6, 14.3, and 16.4 MPa, respectively, in a good agreement with experimental data. The δ values of these polymers at various temperatures are also determined. The temperature dependence of δ is fitted to two linear equations, one above and the other below the polymer's glass transition temperature T. The δ values are more sensitive to temperature at T ≥ T. The T values of the polymers, determined based upon their specific volumes and δ values agree with the experiment qualitatively. The determination of the temperature dependence of δ has a great potential for industrial applications, such as determining miscibility, developing polymeric organogelators as flocculants and oil spill treating agents, and identifying potential solvents and ideal processing temperatures.
METHODS
The MD simulations are performed using the GROMACS 2022.3 package with optimized potential for liquid simulations-all atom (OPLS-AA) force field parameters. All polymers are built as extended chains using CHARMM-GUI Polymer Builder.

This paper investigates the performance of concrete incorporating high-volume fly ash (HVFA) and steel slag aggregates against the detrimental effects of combined cycles of environmental thermal fatigue and exposure to leaked aircraft fluids. A total of 128 cubes and 90 prisms were cast for five mixes and exposed to 60, 120, 180, 240 and 300 combined cycles. The results demonstrate the positive effect of utilization of HVFA which reduces the total amount of portlandite available in the system. The SS aggregates demonstrate a strong interlocking with the surrounding matrix and supply the necessary portlandite for continued pozzolanic reaction. However, their reaction with aircraft fluids causes significant degradation to flexural strength initially, which is redeemed by pozzolanic reaction at a later stage. Hybrid basalt and polypropylene fibres were successful in enhancing the flexural strength and reducing the cracking. The mercury intrusion porosimetry revealed a reduction in pore volume because of HVFA. Scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry were also employed to uncover the underlying mechanisms of damage and assess the performance of the cementitious composite.
