In this study, polyurethane (PU) foams were manufactured using kraft lignin and castor oil as bio-based polyols by replacing 5-20 wt% and 10-100 wt% of conventional polyol, respectively. To investigate the effects of unmodified bio-based polyols on PU foam production, reactivity and morphology within PU composites was analyzed as well as mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting foams. Bio-based PU foam production was carried out after characterizing the reagents used in the foaming process (including hydroxyl group content, molecular weight distribution, and viscosity). To compare the resulting bio-based PU foams, control foam were produced without any bio-based polyol under the same experimental conditions. For lignin-incorporated PU foams, two types, LPU and lpu, were manufactured with index ratio of 1.01 and 1.3, respectively. The compressive strength of LPU foams increased with lignin content from 5 wt% (LPU5: 147 kPa) to 20 wt% (LPU20: 207 kPa), although it remained lower than that of the control foam (PU0: 326 kPa). Similarly, the compressive strength of lpu foams was lower than that of the control foam (pu0: 441 kPa), with values of 164 kPa (lpu5), 163 kPa (lpu10), 167 kPa (lpu15), and 147 kPa (lpu20). At 10 wt% lignin content, both foams (LPU10 and lpu10) exhibited the smallest and most homogenous pore sizes and structures. For castor oil-incorporated PU foams with an index of 1.01, denoted as CPU, increasing castor oil content resulted in larger cell sizes and void fractions, transitioning to an open-cell structure and decreasing the compressive strength of the foams from 284 kPa (CPU10) to 23 kPa (CPU100). Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) results indicated the formation of characteristic urethane linkages in PU foams and confirmed that bio-based polyols were less reactive with isocyanate compared to traditional polyol. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that incorporating lignin and castor oil affected the thermal decomposition behavior. The thermal stability of lignin-incorporated PU foams improved as the lignin content increased with char yields increasing from 11.5 wt% (LPU5) to 15.8 wt% (LPU20) and from 12.4 wt% (lpu5) to 17.5 wt% (lpu20). Conversely, the addition of castor oil resulted in decreased thermal stability, with char yields decreasing from 10.6 wt% (CPU10) to 4.2 wt% (CPU100). This research provides a comprehensive understanding of PU foams incorporating unmodified biomass-derived polyols (lignin and castor oil), suggesting their potential for value-added utilization as bio-based products.

Marine biofouling remains a huge concern for maritime industries and for environmental health. Although the current biocide-based antifouling coatings can prevent marine biofouling, their use has been associated with toxicity for the marine environment, being urgent to find sustainable alternatives. Previously, our research group has identified a prenylated chalcone (1) with promising antifouling activity against the settlement of larvae of the macrofouling species Mytilus galloprovincialis (EC = 16.48 µM and LC > 200 µM) and lower ecotoxicity when compared to Econea®, a commercial antifouling agent in use. Herein, a series of chalcone 1 analogues were designed and synthesized in order to obtain optimized antifouling compounds with improved potency while maintaining low ecotoxicity. Compounds 8, 15, 24, and 27 showed promising antifouling activity against the settlement of M. galloprovincialis larvae, being dihydrochalcone 27 the most potent. The effect of compound 24 was associated with the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity. Among the synthesized compounds, compound 24 also showed potent complementary activity against Navicula sp. (EC = 4.86 µM), similarly to the lead chalcone 1 (EC = 6.75 µM). Regarding the structure-activity relationship, the overall results demonstrate that the substitution of the chalcone of the lead compound 1 by a dihydrochalcone scaffold resulted in an optimized potency against the settlement of mussel larvae. Marine polyurethane (PU)-based coatings containing the best performed compound concerning anti-settlement activity (dihydrochalcone 27) were prepared, and mussel larvae adherence was reduced compared to control PU coatings.

Comparative Study
OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare accuracy of arch expansion using two different thermoplastic materials in Invisalign aligners: EX30® (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol, or PETG) and SmartTrack® (polyurethane).
METHODS
The study sample comprised 65 adult patients consecutively treated with Invisalign from two private practices: group 1 - treated with EX30® (358 teeth) and group 2 - treated with SmartTrack® (888 teeth). Six hundred and twenty-three measurements were assessed in three digital models throughout treatment: model 1 - initial, model 2 - predicted tooth position, and model 3 - achieved position. Sixteen reference points per arch were marked and, after best alignment, 2 points per tooth were copied from one digital model to another. Linear values of both arches were measured for canines, premolars, and first molars: on lingual gingival margins and cusp tips of every tooth. Comparisons were performed by Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test.
RESULTS
Both termoplastic materials presented significant differences between predicted and achieved values for all measurements, except for the lower molar cusp tip in the SmartTrack® group. There is no statistical difference in the accuracy of transverse expansion between these two materials. Overall accuracy for EX30® aligners in maxilla and mandible were found to be 37 and 38%, respectively; and Smarttrack® presented an overall accuracy of 56.62% in the maxilla and 68.72% in the mandible.
CONCLUSIONS
It is not possible to affirm one material expands better than the other. Further controlled clinical studies should be conducted comparing SmartTrack® and EX30® under similar conditions.

Inspired by natural wrinkled surfaces, artificial surfaces with biomimetic wrinkled structures have been widely used to improve optical properties, wettability, and antibacterial properties. However, the preparation of wrinkled structures has the disadvantages of long-time consumption and complex processes. Herein, we prepared a self-wrinkling polyurethane-acrylate (PUA) wood coating via biomimetic self-wrinkling patterns by using a light-emitting diode (LED)/excimer/mercury lamp curing system, which was capable of self-matting, anti-fingerprint and skin-tactile performance. By adjusting the irradiation intensity in the curing system, the wavelength (λ) and amplitude (A) of wrinkles on the coating surface were controlled to enhance the coating performance. After curing by the LED, excimer, and mercury lamps at energy intensities of 500, 30, and 300 mW/cm respectively, the self-wrinkling coating showed excellent surface performance. The self-wrinkling coating represented low gloss of 4.1 GU at 85°, high hardness of 4H. Interestingly, the coating surface had a high hydrophobicity (104.5°) and low surface energy (29-30 mN/m) and low coefficient (COF) of friction (0.1-0.2), which were consistent with those of the human skin surface. Besides, the wrinkled structure also improved the thermal stability of the coating samples. This study provided a promising technique for the mass production of self-wrinkling coatings that could be used in wood-based panels, furniture, and leather.

INTRODUCTION
The tennis serve is commonly executed in high-pressure scenarios, often leading to performance decline; a condition commonly referred to as choking under pressure. One suggested effective method to avert choking involves contracting the left hand. We examined the effects of left-hand contraction on tennis serve performance using a wearable grasping material (polyurethane foam) which can be incorporated into sportswear.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
We assigned 40 right-handed skilled tennis players to either the contraction group ( = 20) or the no-contraction group ( = 20). They were instructed to perform a second-serve task during the pre-test and pressure test. The participants in the contraction group squeezed the grasping material for 20 s before executing the task in the pressure test. We measured performance, including total scores, the number of maximum score achievements, landing positions, and kinematic indices (i.e., ball speed, racket speed, and impact height).
RESULTS
Although neither group demonstrated deteriorated performance on the pressure test, the contraction group experienced an increased number of maximum score achievements under the pressure situation compared with the pre-test ( = 0.021).
DISCUSSION
Our results suggest that when under pressure, left-hand contraction may improve performance during tennis serves.

Review
Polyurethane is a widely used material because of its excellent properties. Cellulose is a renewable, biocompatible, and biodegradable natural polymer that also has the advantages of a low density, high porosity, and large specific surface area. There are three main types of common nanocellulose: nanocellulose fibers, cellulose nanocrystals, and bacterial nanocellulose. Composites prepared with nanocellulose and polyurethane materials have good mechanical properties and good biocompatibility and can be applied in sensors, 3D printing, self-repairing materials, electromagnetic shielding, and many other areas. This paper details the preparation processes of different nanocelluloses and the application areas of composites, and points to the future development of nanocellulose polyurethane composites.

Intrinsically stretchable organic photovoltaics have emerged as a prominent candidate for the next-generation wearable power generators regarding their structural design flexibility, omnidirectional stretchability, and in-plane deformability. However, formulating strategies to fabricate intrinsically stretchable organic photovoltaics that exhibit mechanical robustness under both repetitive strain cycles and high tensile strains remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate high-performance intrinsically stretchable organic photovoltaics with an initial power conversion efficiency of 14.2%, exceptional stretchability (80% of the initial power conversion efficiency maintained at 52% tensile strain), and cyclic mechanical durability (95% of the initial power conversion efficiency retained after 100 strain cycles at 10%). The stretchability is primarily realised by delocalising and redistributing the strain in the active layer to a highly stretchable PEDOT:PSS electrode developed with a straightforward incorporation of ION E, which simultaneously enhances the stretchability of PEDOT:PSS itself and meanwhile reinforces the interfacial adhesion with the polyurethane substrate. Both enhancements are pivotal factors ensuring the excellent mechanical durability of the PEDOT:PSS electrode, which further effectively delays the crack initiation and propagation in the top active layer, and enables the limited performance degradation under high tensile strains and repetitive strain cycles.

In this paper, electrospinning and supercritical impregnation were coupled to produce polyurethane fibrous membranes loaded with mesoglycan and lactoferrin. The proposed methodology allowed the production of three skin wound healing bilayer systems: a first system containing mesoglycan loaded through electrospinning and lactoferrin loaded by supercritical impregnation, a second system where the use of the two techniques was reversed, and a third sample where the drugs were both encapsulated through a one-step process. SEM analysis demonstrated the formation of microfibers with a homogeneous drug distribution. The highest loadings were 0.062 g/g for mesoglycan and 0.013 g/g for lactoferrin. Then, hydrophilicity and liquid retention analyses were carried out to evaluate the possibility of using the manufacturers as active patches. The kinetic profiles, obtained through in vitro tests conducted using a Franz diffusion cell, proved that the diffusion of the active drugs followed a double-step release before attaining the equilibrium after about 30 h. When the electrospun membranes were placed in contact with HUVEC, HaCaT, and BJ cell lines, as human endothelial cells, keratinocytes, and fibroblasts, respectively, no cytotoxic events were assessed. Finally, the capacity of the most promising system to promote the healing process was performed by carrying out scratch tests on HaCat cells.

Frequent oil spill accidents caused by transportation, storage and usage may lead to severe damage on aquatic and ecological environments. Effective methods for rapid oil recovery are urgently in demand. Polyvinyl chloride, hydrophobic nano-SiO, expanded graphite were separately applied to polyurethane and melamine sponge to fabricate superhydrophobic sponge material. The selected superhydrophobic sponge was introduced to establish sponge - covered disc skimmer. Oil recovery tests of the device were conducted to determine the optimum parameters. The examined operating conditions encompassed sponge thickness, immersion depth, rotational speed, oil slick thickness, operation time. The results showed that the melamine sponge modified by both polyvinyl chloride and hydrophobic nano-SiO exhibits super-hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 150.3°. The absorption capacity for diesel oil can reach 53.89 g/g. The absorption capacity can still achieve 90 % of its initial capacity even after 500 extrusion-absorption separation tests. The results indicate the superiority of the superhydrophobic sponge covered surface in oil recovery over the standard steel surface regardless of the operating conditions. The recovery rate of the device can still achieve 96.4 % of its initial capacity with 95 % efficiency even after 85 h operation. The results suggest the superhydrophobic sponge - covered disc skimmer may have great application perspectives in oil spill recovery.

Epileptic power supply in Sub-Saharan countries of Africa has warranted the use of power generators as an alternative source of power supply. Exhaust emission from these generators is associated with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAHs). Hence, this study focused on the determination of levels of PAHs in the emission of different brands of power generators used in Nigeria. Exhaust emissions of different power generators were sampled using a filter-sorbent sampling system with polyurethane foam (PUF) as an adsorbent material. Analysis of PAHs was carried out using a Gas Chromatograph coupled to a mass selective detector (GC- MS) operated on Electron Ionization (EI) mode. The results showed the ∑ PAHs range 14.91-26.0 Bap was the most abundant of all the compounds with a concentration of 2.6 with a range of 2.08-3.07 . The Incremental Life Cancer Risk (ILCR) values of all the generator's emission sampled are higher than 10 for both children and adult which indicate a high potential cancer risk from inhalation of emission from these generators while Hazard Quotient (HQ) values from all the power generating set in this study are all above 1 which indicated high associated non-carcinogenic. The study revealed the levels of PAHs associated with the emission of power generators in Nigeria.
