OBJECTIVES
The red panda is currently the only surviving member of the Ailuridae family in the Caniformia suborder. In this study, we provide data on anatomical, morphometric, histological and histochemical examination of the orbital region, eyelids, orbital gland, and eye tunics in two adult males Ailurus fulgens fulgens from the Wroclaw Zoological Garden, Poland.
METHODS
The study involved morphometric analysis of the eyeball and selected accessory organs of the eye, along with analysis of the bony orbit, including its morphometry, macroscopic, and microscopic evaluation. Microscopic evaluation encompassed histological and histochemical staining, with the former involving hematoxylin & eosin (H&E), Movat pentachrome, picro-Mallory trichrome, Fontana-Masson, and the latter including PAS, AB pH 1.0, AB pH 2.5; AB pH 2.5/PAS, and HDI.
RESULTS
The upper (UE) and lower (LE) eyelids presented well-developed tarsal glands, sebaceous glands, and a characteristic simple alveolar gland (producing a mucous secretion). The palpebral part of the lacrimal gland was present. A single lymphoid follicle was observed only in the upper eyelids. The superficial gland of the third eyelid (SGTE) was a multilobar acinar complex that produces mucous secretion and is contained within the interlobular ducts of numerous aggregates of lymph nodes. The third eyelid (TE) was T-shaped and composed of hyaline tissue, containing CALT. The lacrimal gland (LG) also revealed a multilobar acinar complex that produced mucous secretion, with a single lymphoid follicle. The cornea consisted of 4 layers, as Bowman's membrane was absent. The Vogt palisades composed of 7-10 layers of epithelial cells were demonstrated. The pupil was horizontally ovoid at rest (post-mortem). The sphincter pupil and the dilator pupil were well developed. Macroscopically, the tapetum lucidum appeared as a milky, non-opalescent crescent. Histologically, the choroidal tapetum lucidum cellulosum consisted of 5 to 9 layers of loosely packed oval cells. The retina showed a composition similar to that of terrestrial nocturnal carnivores.
CONCLUSIONS
The results of our research indicate that the anatomical features of the eye and orbital region in the red panda share similarities with those described in the Musteloidea clade, as well as the Canidae and Ursidae families.

Retinoblastoma (RB) is a childhood retinal neoplasm and commonly treated with cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents. However, these therapeutic approaches often lead to diverse adverse effects. A precise molecular therapy will alleviate these side effects and offer better treatment outcomes. Over the years, kinases have become potential drug targets in cancer therapy. Hence, we aimed to investigate genetic alterations of putative kinase drug targets in RB. Targeted exome sequencing was performed on 35 RB tumors with paired blood samples using a gene panel consisting of 29 FDA-approved kinase genes. Single nucleotide variants were analyzed for pathogenicity using an in-house pipeline and copy number variations (CNVs) were detected by a depth of coverage and CNVPanelizer. The correlation between genetic changes and clinicopathological features was assessed using GraphPad Prism. Three somatic mutations, two in ERBB4 and one in EGFR were identified. Two of these mutations (ERBB4 c.C3836A & EGFR c.A1196T) were not reported earlier. CNV analysis revealed recurrent gains of ALK, MAP2K2, SRC, STK11, and FGFR3 as well as frequent losses of ATM, PI3KCA and ERBB4. Notably, nonresponsive tumors had a higher incidence of amplifications in clinically actionable genes such as ALK. Moreover, ALK gain and ATM loss were strongly correlated with optic nerve head invasion. In conclusion, our study revealed genetic alterations of druggable kinases in RB, providing preliminary insights for the exploration of kinase-targeted therapy in RB.

Most nonrelativistic electron correlation methods can be adapted to account for relativistic effects, as long as the relativistic molecular spinor integrals are available, from either a four-, two-, or one-component mean-field calculation. However, relativistic multireference correlation methods remain a relatively unexplored area, with mixed evidence regarding the improvements brought by perturbative treatments. We report, for the first time, the implementation of state-averaged four-component relativistic multireference perturbation theories to second and third order based on the driven similarity renormalization group (DSRG). With our methods, named 4c-SA-DSRG-MRPT2 and 3, we find that the dynamical correlation included on top of 4c-CASSCF references can significantly improve the spin-orbit splittings in p-block elements and potential energy surfaces when compared to 4c-CASSCF and 4c-CASPT2 results. We further show that 4c-DSRG-MRPT2 and 3 are applicable to these systems over a wide range of the flow parameter, with systematic improvement from second to third order in terms of both improved error statistics and reduced sensitivity with respect to the flow parameter.

A 23-year-old female symptomatic with unilateral proptosis with superior globe displacement and hypertropia was found to have a multiloculated cystic lesion with bony lining arising from the inferomedial orbit. The adjacent maxillary sinus was markedly smaller on the affected side, with no defect of the wall on radiographic or intraoperative examination. Surgical excision and histological analysis of the lesion demonstrated an orbital respiratory epithelial cyst. A literature review of congenital orbital respiratory epithelial cysts is presented. To our knowledge, this is the first published case of choristomatous orbital respiratory epithelial cyst associated with ossification, and a primary or secondary anomaly of the adjacent sinus without bony defect.

PURPOSE
Aims to provide an overview of the contemporary epidemiology of malignant orbital tumors by analyzing population-based incidence patterns across various regions worldwide.
METHODS
In this article, we retrieved orbital malignancy data from the MEDLINE database and analyzed the incidence and prevalence of orbital malignancies worldwide. We performed the literature search by searching on the Mesh terms for malignant orbital tumors ("orbital", "tumor", "lymphoma", "malignant", "cancer", "incidence", and "epidemiology"). All included studies were published between 1993 and 2023 and were written in English.
RESULTS
Ocular or ophthalmic lymphoma most frequently occurred in the orbit, with a prevalence ranging from 47% to 54%. The incidence of malignant orbital tumors was increasing in the USA (2.0 per million (1981-1993), Netherlands (0.86 (1981-1985) to 2.49 (2001-2005) per million) and South Korea (0.3-0.8 per million (1999-2016)), respectively. Ophthalmic lymphoma which includes orbit lymphoma was increasing in Canada (0.17-1.47 per million (1992-2010)), Denmark (0.86 per million (1981-1985) to 2.49 per million (2001-2005)), respectively.
CONCLUSIONS
The predominant primary malignant orbital tumor in adults was lymphoma. Ocular or ophthalmic lymphoma most frequently occured in the orbit. The limited data available suggested an increasing trend in the incidence of malignant orbital tumors in each country included, which were mainly attributed to the increase in lymphoma. Generally, incidence rates were found to increase with advancing age, with no difference between males and females.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic/inorganic perovskites are an emerging materials class for optoelectronic and spintronic applications due to strong excitonic absorption and emission, large spin-orbit coupling, and Rashba spin-splitting effects. For many of the envisioned applications, tuning the majority charge carrier (electron or hole) concentration is desirable, but electronic doping of metal-halide perovskites has proven to be challenging. Here, we demonstrate electron injection into the lower-energy branch of the Rashba-split conduction band of 2D phenethylammonium lead iodide by means of n-type molecular doping at room temperature. The molecular dopant, benzyl viologen (BV), is shown to compensate adventitious p-type impurities and can lead to a tunable Fermi level above the conduction band minimum and increased conductivity in intrinsic samples. The doping-induced carrier concentration is monitored by the observation of free-carrier absorption and intraband optical transitions in the infrared spectral range. These optical measurements allow for an estimation of the Rashba splitting energy ≈38 ± 4 meV. Photoinduced quantum beating measurements demonstrate that the excess electron density reduces the electron spin -factor by ca. 6%. This work demonstrates controllable carrier concentrations in hybrid organic/inorganic perovskites and yields potential for room temperature spin control through the Rashba effect.

PURPOSE
Within the large umbrella of histiocytosis are a few similar yet heterogenous entities involving the orbit and periocular tissues with or without systemic infiltration, termed adult onset xanthogranuloma or orbital xanthogranuloma. Due to rarity of these conditions, different classifications in use, diverse clinical presentations and still unknown etiology, the aim of this paper was to provide an up-to-date literature review of the actual understanding of histiocytosis and its subgroups involving the orbit and periocular area, diagnostic strategies and therapeutic modalities.
METHODS
We present a review of literature and small case series comprising four patients diagnosed and treated in the period from 2001 until 2023 in our hospital. Clinical files of 4 patients with adult-onset xanthogranulomatous disease of the orbit and ocular adnexa (AOXGD) were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical, laboratory, radiological, histopathological, and immunohistochemical findings were reexamined.
RESULTS
Reviewing medical records of our patients with AOXGD, we found significant overlap between histiocytosis and different immune disorders. A broad workup should be considered in these patients as they can harbour severe immune disfunctions and hematologic disorders. Preferred treatment modality depends on a histopathologic type of AOXGD, clinical presentation and systemic involvement and should be conducted multidisciplinary.
CONCLUSION
The diagnosis is often delayed because of its rarity and diverse clinical findings. Development of molecular genetic tests, detection of BRAF V600E mutation and different types of kinase mutations, mutations in transcriptional regulatory genes as well as tyrosine kinase receptors have shed a new light on the etiopathogenesis and potential targeted treatment of histiocytosis.

The Dyakonov-Perel (DP) mechanism of spin relaxation has long been considered irrelevant in centrosymmetric systems since it was developed originally for noncentrosymmetric ones. We investigate whether this conventional understanding extends to the realm of orbital relaxation, which has recently attracted significant attention. Surprisingly, we find that orbital relaxation in centrosymmetric systems exhibits the DP-like behavior in the weak scattering regime. Moreover, the DP-like orbital relaxation can make the spin relaxation in centrosymmetric systems DP-like through the spin-orbit coupling. We also find that the DP-like orbital and spin relaxations are anisotropic even in materials with high crystal symmetry (such as face-centered cubic structure) and may depend on the orbital and spin nature of electron wave functions.

We report a search for time variations of the solar ^{8}B neutrino flux using 5804 live days of Super-Kamiokande data collected between May 31, 1996, and May 30, 2018. Super-Kamiokande measured the precise time of each solar neutrino interaction over 22 calendar years to search for solar neutrino flux modulations with unprecedented precision. Periodic modulations are searched for in a dataset comprising five-day interval solar neutrino flux measurements with a maximum likelihood method. We also applied the Lomb-Scargle method to this dataset to compare it with previous reports. The only significant modulation found is due to the elliptic orbit of the Earth around the Sun. The observed modulation is consistent with astronomical data: we measured an eccentricity of (1.53±0.35)%, and a perihelion shift of (-1.5±13.5) days.
