Quantification of the unbound portion of platinum (Pt) in human plasma is important for assessing the pharmacokinetics of the chemotherapeutic drug cisplatin. In this study, we sought to compare the recovery of unbound Pt using Nanosep® filters to 1) traditional filters (Centrifree®, Centrisart®, Amicon®) or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) protein precipitation, and 2) unbound, bound, and total Pt concentrations in clinical specimens. For the tested filters, the impact of 1) molecular weight cut-offs, 2) centrifugation force, and 3) total Pt concentration on Pt binding in human plasma was evaluated. Pt was quantified using inductively coupled-plasma mass spectrometry. In human plasma spiked with 0.9 μg/mL Pt, the percent of unbound Pt increased at higher centrifugation speeds. By comparison, the percent of unbound Pt was highest (42.1%) following TCA protein precipitation. When total Pt was ≤0.9 μg/mL, unbound Pt (~20-30%) was consistent across filters. Conversely, when plasma was spiked with Pt exceeding 0.9 μg/mL, the percent of unbound Pt increased from 36.5 to 48% using ultrafiltration, compared to 63.4% to 79% with TCA precipitation. In patients receiving cisplatin-containing chemotherapy, the fraction of unbound Pt at concentrations exceeding 0.9 μg/mL ranged between 35 and 90%. Moreover, the unbound fraction of Pt in plasma correlated with the concentration of unbound (R = 0.738) and total Pt (R = 0.335). In summary, this study demonstrates that 1) the percent of unbound Pt is influenced by total and unbound Pt levels in vitro and in clinical specimens, and 2) ultrafiltration with Nanosep® filters is a feasible method for quantifying unbound Pt concentrations in human plasma.

Developing non-platinum group metal catalysts for the sluggish hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is critical for alkaline fuel cells. To date, Ni-based materials are the most promising candidates but still suffer from insufficient performance. Herein, we report an unconventional hcp/fcc Ni (u-hcp/fcc Ni) heteronanocrystal with multiple epitaxial hcp/fcc heterointerfaces and coherent twin boundaries, generating rugged surfaces with plenty of asymmetric convex sites. Systematic analyses discover that such convex sites enable the adsorption of *H in unusual bridge positions with weakened binding energy, circumventing the over-strong *H adsorption on traditional hollow positions, and simultaneously stabilizing interfacial *H2O. It thus synergistically optimizes the HOR thermodynamic process as well as reduces the kinetic barrier of the rate-determining Volmer step. Consequently, the developed u-hcp/fcc Ni exhibits the top-rank alkaline HOR activity with a mass activity of 40.6 mA mgNi-1 (6.3 times higher than fcc Ni control) together with superior stability and high CO-tolerance. These results provide a paradigm for designing high-performance catalysts by shifting the adsorption state of intermediates through configuring surface sites.

Palladium (Pd)-transition metal alloys have the potential to regulate the intermediate surface adsorption strength in oxygen reduction reactions (ORR), making them a promising substitute for platinum-based catalysts. Nonetheless, prolonged electrochemical cycling can lead to the depletion of transition metals, resulting in structural degradation and poor durability. Herein, the synthesis of alloy catalysts (PdTe) containing Pd and the metalloid tellurium (Te) through a one-step reduction method is reported. Characterizations of powder X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrated both uniform dispersion and strong binding force of elements within the PdTe alloy, along with providing crystallographic details of associated compounds. Based on density functional theory calculations, PdTe had a more negative d-band center than that of pure Pd, which reduces the adsorption capacity between active sites and intermediates in the ORR, and therefore enhances reaction kinetics. The PdTe exhibited excellent ORR activity, and its onset and half-wave potentials were ∼0.98 and ∼0.90 V, respectively, at 1600 rpm within the O-saturated 1.0 M KOH. Significantly, accelerated durability tests achieved exceptional stability, and half-wave potential just decayed by 4 mV after 30000 consecutive cycles. Moreover, this study aims to promote the preparation of Pd and metalloid alloys for other energy conversion applications.

Microchanneling and ultrasonic delivery of gold and platinum nanoparticles for selective photothermolysis of sebaceous follicles in the treatment of acne: a pilot study using porcine skin.
PURPOSE
Several treatment options for acne vulgaris are limited by their associated adverse effects. An innovative approach involves introducing light-absorbing nanoparticles into sebaceous follicles before destroying the follicles using selective photothermolysis. We aimed to investigate efficient methods for introducing gold and platinum nanoparticles into sebaceous follicles and to identify suitable laser equipment and parameters for the effective destruction of these follicles.
METHODS
We used porcine skin as the experimental model. We compared the efficacies of a thulium laser, ultrasound, and manual massage and evaluated the optimal method for delivering nanoparticles in close proximity to sebaceous follicles. Subsequently, a 1064-nm-wavelength neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd: YAG) laser was employed to induce selective photothermolysis. We compared different parameters to identify the optimal pulse duration and fluence of the Nd: YAG laser. The extent of penetration and destruction of sebaceous follicles was assessed using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, and a numerical evaluation was conducted.
RESULTS
H&E staining showed that irradiation with a long-pulsed Nd: YAG laser following a combination of thulium laser and sonophoresis effectively destroyed sebaceous follicles, with destruction rates exceeding 50%. These results were valid with a long pulse duration and a high fluence of the Nd: YAG laser.
CONCLUSION
This study demonstrated that sebaceous follicles can be effectively destroyed through a mixture of gold and platinum nanoparticle delivery by a combination of microchanneling and sonophoresis, followed by selective thermal damage induced by a 1064-nm long-pulsed high-fluence Nd: YAG laser.

PURPOSE
In advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) monotherapy is often preferred over intensive ICI treatment for frail patients and those with poor performance status (PS). Among those with poor PS, the additional effect of frailty on treatment selection and mortality is unknown.
METHODS
Patients in the veterans affairs national precision oncology program from 1/2019-12/2021 who received first-line ICI for advanced NSCLC were followed until death or study end 6/2022. Association of an electronic frailty index with treatment selection was examined using logistic regression stratified by PS. We also examined overall survival (OS) on intensive treatment using Cox regression stratified by PS. Intensive treatment was defined as concurrent use of platinum-doublet chemotherapy and/or dual checkpoint blockade and non-intensive as ICI monotherapy.
RESULTS
Of 1547 patients receiving any ICI, 66.2% were frail, 33.8% had poor PS (≥ 2), and 25.8% were both. Frail patients received less intensive treatment than non-frail patients in both PS subgroups (Good PS: odds ratio [OR] 0.67, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.51 - 0.88; Poor PS: OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.44 - 1.10). Among 731 patients receiving intensive treatment, frailty was associated with lower OS for those with good PS (hazard ratio [HR] 1.53, 95% CI 1.2 - 1.96), but no association was observed with poor PS (HR 1.03, 95% CI 0.67 - 1.58).
CONCLUSION
Frail patients with both good and poor PS received less intensive treatment. However, frailty has a limited effect on survival among those with poor PS. These findings suggest that PS, not frailty, drives survival on intensive treatment.

Cancer patients suffer from complicated chemotoxicity. Pharmacogenomics can help stratify patients by predicting their response to treatment and susceptibility toward severe side effects. The spindle-assembly checkpoint (SAC) is an important pathway that is activated by platinum and taxane compounds and plays a crucial role in their cytotoxic activity. This study investigated a SAC component, Budding Uninhibited by Benzimidazoles 3 (BUB3), its expression, and genetic variants in advanced ovarian cancer patients treated with paclitaxel-carboplatin chemotherapy. Among 80 patients, BUB3 expression correlated with chemosensitivity, suggesting its potential as a predictive marker for chemotherapy response. However, high BUB3 expression was associated with a higher risk of poor survival. In addition, genetic polymorphisms in BUB3 (rs11248416 and rs11248419) were significantly linked to chemotherapy-related toxicities, with rs11248416 showing a negative impact on the patient's physical quality of life.

A unique type of platinum catalysis that is valuable for the synthesis of α,β-unsaturated ketones is described. In the presence of PtCl, (2-arylethynyl)trimethylsilanes reacted with HO at 30 °C to give 1,4-diarylbut-3-en-2-ones in moderate to good yields. (2-Alkylethynyl)trimethylsilanes could be efficiently converted into the corresponding hydrative dimerization products by a modified Pt catalyst system. Mechanistic studies suggest the participation of acylplatinum intermediates in the catalytic cycle.

Ammonia fuel cells using carbon-neutral ammonia as fuel are regarded as a fast, furious, and flexible next-generation carbon-free energy conversion technology, but it is limited by the kinetically sluggish ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Platinum can efficiently drive these three types of reactions, but its scale-up application is limited by its susceptibility to poisoning and high cost. In order to reduce the cost and alleviate poisoning, incorporating Pt with various metals proves to be an efficient and feasible strategy. Herein, PtFeCoNiIr/C trifunctional high-entropy alloy (HEA) catalysts are prepared with uniform mixing and ultra-small size of 2 ± 0.5 nm by Joule heating method. PtFeCoNiIr/C exhibits efficient performance in AOR (J = 139.8 A g ), ORR (E = 0.87 V), and HER (E = 20.3 mV), outperforming the benchmark Pt/C, and no loss in HER performance at 100 mA cm for 200 h. The almost unchanged E in the anti-poisoning test indicates its promising application in real fuel cells powered by ammonia. This work opens up a new path for the development of multi-functional electrocatalysts and also makes a big leap toward the exploration of cost-effective device configurations for novel fuel cells.

Anion exchange membrane fuel cell (AEMFC) is an emerging and promising technology that can help realize a carbon-neutral, sustainable economy. Also, compared to the proton exchange membrane counterpart, AEMFC can achieve comparable cell outputs with lower costs due to the applicability of non-platinum group metal electrocatalysts for the reaction on the electrodes' surfaces. However, the wide application of the AEMFCs has been impeded by the unsatisfactory stability and performance of the hydroxide-conductive membranes in the past. Recently researchers have made breakthroughs using polyarylene (PA)-based AEMs. This article summarizes the recent advances of a class of AEMs with aromatic backbone without ether bonds, mainly synthesized by Friedel-Crafts polycondensation. Such PA-based AEMs showed high chemical/mechanical stabilities and ionic conductivity, and even the fuel cell with those AEMs showed impressive peak power density of up to 2.58 W cm. In this concept article, we classify major strategies for making PA-based AEMs to show the recent trends, highlight synthesis, characterization, and properties, and provide a brief outlook.

As one lethal malignancy in women's reproductive systems, ovarian cancer (OC) is frequently detected at an advanced phase during diagnosis. when the disease has spread widely. The absence of obvious symptoms and powerful screening tools in the early stages makes treatment difficult and the prognosis poor. Despite the clinical remission that can be achieved in some patients after initial treatment, the recurrence rate is conspicuous, posing a considerable challenge in treating recurrent OC (ROC). In the retrospective analysis, we compared the effects of two treatment regimens, aqupla combined with paclitaxel liposome (NP group) versus aqupla combined with docetaxel (ND group), on survival and biomarkers in patients with ROC. The study included 121 OC patients, and clinical data were collected through an electronic medical record system, outpatient review records, and a follow-up record system. The results revealed a notably higher overall remission rate in the ND group than the NP group, but revealed no notable inter-group discrepancy in toxicities, implying that the aqupla combined with docetaxel regimen may be more effective in platinum-sensitive ROC patients. Additionally, post-treatment CA125 levels were lower in patients in the ND group, suggesting that the regimen may be more effective in reducing tumour load. Survival analysis further revealed that treatment regimen, FIGO stage, number of recurrent lesions, and pretreatment CA125 level were independent prognostic factors affecting patients' 5-year OS and PFS. Overall for ROC patients, especially platinum-sensitive patients, the aqupla in combination with docetaxel regimen provided an improved survival benefit with a comparable safety profile, highlighting the importance of individualised treatment strategies.
