Partial or complete dentures are constructed from thermoplastic resins that are thermally processed and molded. This review examines the presently available evidence for the cytotoxicity of thermoplasticized denture base resins on human gingival epithelial cells, adipose cells, and fibroblasts; human amnion fibroblasts; and mouse fibroblasts. Electronic searches were performed on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases to identify relevant articles to be included in the review until September 2022. Clinical, in vivo, and in vitro studies in English language were searched for. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Toxicological data Reliability Assessment tool (ToxRTool) developed by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre. GRADE assessment was used to evaluate the certainty of evidence. Seven in vitro studies were included in the review. The overall risk of bias was determined to be high, with the majority of studies assessed found to be reliable with restrictions or not reliable. Only two studies were considered reliable without restrictions based on ToxRTool assessment. The effect of thermoplastic denture base resins on viability and cell adherence of human gingival or amnion fibroblasts and mouse fibroblasts (L929s) is not significant. Conditioned media from unpolished specimens of resins were significantly more toxic to cultured cells than those from polished specimens. This may be of concern in cases of poor post-processing of dentures. Based on the limited evidence available, there is low-certainty evidence that thermoplastic denture base resins appear to be biocompatible and show insignificant cytotoxicity. Further well-designed trials adhering to standard reporting guidelines and using objective measures are necessary before outlining universal guidelines for best practice. Long-term in vivo and clinical assessment is necessary to corroborate laboratory findings with clinical outcomes. Denture base resins are in constant contact with oral tissues, and cytotoxic components released by the resins may irritate or inflame the tissues or provoke an allergic response.

Long-term clinical outcomes of short dental implants (≤6 mm) supporting single crowns or short fixed partial dentures have been reported differently in different studies and need more clarification. This systematic study evaluated the rate of bone loss (BL), the durability of implants equal to or shorter than 6 mm supporting single crowns or short fixed partial dentures, and prosthetic-related side effects during 5 years of follow-up. Five databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Cochrane) were electronically and manually searched for longitudinal studies with a follow-up period of 5 years or more until January 2023. The study question was, "Does the implant equal to or shorter than 6 mm affect BL and survival rate of the implant-supported prosthesis after 5 years of follow-up?". From 752 identified articles, nine studies were selected for further evaluation. After 5 years of follow-up, most studies had more than 90% survival rate and the maximum BL was 0.54 mm. Still, in internal and external connections, these changes were not substantial. For example, screw loosening was the most common problem with implanted prostheses. Implants of 6 mm or shorter are a suitable treatment option in atrophic ridges with good durability and fewer side effects during a follow-up period of more than 5 years.

Diagnosis is a key aspect in endodontic treatment, in a decade where invasive interventions are misapprehended as social tendency instead of medical necessity. All diagnostic facets should be considered before intending the operative phase. Intraoral endodontic radiology-based diagnosis has been shown to be limited. Periapical X-ray is the most used endodontic imaging, yet it does not provide high accuracy. Traditionally, dentists have been trained to diagnose a cyst by certain aspects (size, shape and appearance); hence, an assumption that teeth are affected by "periapical cyst" were subjected to unnecessary extraction or apicoectomy. The aim of this systematic review is to critically appraise the publications that relate the histological diagnosis of a periapical lesion (considered the gold standard) to intraoral X-ray investigation. Ovid Medline, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Mendeley and Scopus were searched for English-language studies comparing periapical diagnosis obtained by using two techniques (histopathology and X-ray). Sixteen articles were included for the final analysis (qualitative and quantitative evaluation) out of which only two supported the statement that periapical diagnosis can be coherently assessed through periapical imaging. Although there is not enough evidence to deliver a definitive conclusion, there are many publications that refute the diagnosis of a cyst via periapical X-ray.

Denture plaque, a biofilm that develops on denture surfaces, could contribute to many oral and systemic afflictions. Hence, a quantitative assessment of denture plaque is important to evaluate the denture hygiene of denture wearers, particularly to prevent plaque biofilm-associated diseases. The aim of this systematic review, therefore, was to review and summarize the visual denture hygiene assessment methods using denture plaque indices and with planimetries published in the literature. English language studies published up to March 2022 in four electronic databases, PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library, were searched, followed by a manual search of Google Scholar by two assessors. The review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) whenever possible. Details of the visual assessment methods, including the types of denture assessed, its materials and its surfaces, as well as the use of a disclosing agent, were the main outcomes. Of 492 screened studies, 74 were included per the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Of these, 60 studies utilized various denture plaque indices while 18 used planimetries. 43 out of 60 studies with indices and 17 out of 18 studies with planimetries used disclosing agents for visual evaluation of plaque. A total of 21 indices were described in the included studies, of which seven graded a divided denture surface, while the remainder graded entire denture surface. Of the 18 planimetric assessments, one study quantified squares of the disclosed plaques on denture images, 16 studies quantified such pixels with computer programs, and a single study quantified points, pixels, and contour of plaque areas. In summary, denture plaque indices appear to be popular in denture plaque assessment due to their simplicity. Computerized planimetric assessment, though more time-consuming, provides a more accurate assessment of plaque load as it is less prone to subjectivity and assessor errors.

Effect of addition of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the antimicrobial properties, surface roughness and surface hardness of polymethyl methacrylate: A Systematic Review.
Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) denture-base resins have poor surface properties that facilitates microbial adhesion causing denture stomatitis. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effect of different sizes and percentages of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NP) on the antimicrobial property, surface roughness and surface hardness of PMMA denture base resin. A systematic search of English peer-reviewed articles, clinical trial registries, grey literature databases and other online sources was performed using the PRISMA-S Guidelines for and studies. Qualitative data synthesis was performed to analyse sample dimensions, acrylic used, treatments of nanoparticles, methods used for testing and effect of size and percentage of nanoparticle. Risk of bias assessment was done using modified Cochrane risk of bias tool. Out of 1376 articles, 15 were included. TiO NP of size less than 30 nm was most frequently used. Both antimicrobial property and surface hardness improved irrespective of the size of the added TiO NP. Three studies reported increase in the surface roughness with less than 50 nm TiO NP. 3% TiO NP was most frequently used. On increasing the percentage, three studies reported an increase in antimicrobial property, while two studies found no change. With TiO NP greater than or equal to 3%, six studies reported an increase in surface hardness, while two reported increase in surface roughness. Large methodological variations were observed across studies. All studies except one were of moderate quality. On addition of TiO NP to heat polymerized PMMA, the antimicrobial property and surface hardness improved irrespective of the size of the TiO NP, however, addition of nanoparticles less than 50 nm increased the surface roughness. Increasing the percentage of TiO NP increased the surface hardness but did not always increase the antimicrobial property. Addition of 3% TiO NP provided optimum results with regards to antimicrobial effect and surface hardness, but increase in the surface roughness.

To evaluate the QoL before and after prosthetic rehabilitation of partial mandibulectomy patients based on the type of surgery, effects of radiation, the type of prosthesis, and to enlist their outcome on the rehabilitation. Literature search as per PICO format was carried out within a time range from January 2000 to June 2021. The review followed PRISMA guidelines and registered with the PROSPERO(CRD42021258472). The focus question was established as per the PICO format (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome). The population involved partial mandibulectomy individuals with prosthetic rehabilitation as an intervention. The outcome, quality of life (QoL), was compared with the pre and post partial mandibulectomy patients rehabilitated with a prosthesis. The search yielded 367 articles and based on the search criteria only 7 articles were suitable for qualitative analysis. Marginal resection of the mandible is less aggressive than segmental resection which provided function, phonation, and esthetics at acceptable levels but the food mixing ability was reduced when resection is accompanied by glossectomy. However, the perceived chewing ability and OHRQoL were not accountable to the extent of surgical excision. An overall increase in the QoL on rehabilitation with acrylic prosthesis depicting satisfactory functionality with a considerable improvement in mastication, speech, and social life. QoL and Denture Satisfaction Index did not differ based on the number of implants in an implant overdenture prosthesis, but the chewing ability was improved. An increase in the number of remaining occlusal units improved the overall QoL. Restoration of the function, psychological comfort, and improvement in esthetics was significant in patients who underwent prosthetic rehabilitation. The QoL between conventional and implant prostheses was observed to be more similar, and the effect of remaining hard and soft tissue structures has a major influence on patient comfort signifying the influence of the extent of surgical excision.

Although CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) restorations act as a favorable alternative to conventional metal-ceramic restorations for fixed dental prostheses, little is known about their intermediate and persistent clinical performance. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the clinical performance in terms of biological, technical, and esthetic aspects and the survival and success ratios for single full crowns (SFCs) and fixed partial dentures (FPDs) fabricated by CAD/CAM and conventional techniques and according to the materials used (zirconia {ZC} and lithium disilicate {LD}). The population, intervention, control, outcome, and study design (PICOS) strategy was used to electronically search key terms in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Wiley Online databases for randomized control trials (RCTs) and cohort studies. The bias risks for RCTs and cohort studies were assessed using the Cochrane collaboration tool and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Meta-analysis was performed using Rev5 from Cochrane. A total of 13 studies reporting on 1598 restorations in 1161 patients with a mean observation period of 3.6 years (minimum-maximum: 1-9.3 years) met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis of the included studies indicated that CAD/CAM manufacturing resulted in 1.17, 1.14, and 16.88 (95% CI: 0.64-2.17, 0.86-1.52, 7.59-37.56) higher biological, technical, and esthetic complications than conventional manufacturing of restorations. However, the difference was significant for esthetic complications only (p<0.00001). A significant difference was observed for all biological, technical, and aesthetic aspects between SFCs and FPDs (odds ratio {OR} = 2.61 vs. 1.78, 95% CI: 1.92-3.56 vs. 1.33-2.38; p<0.00001). The survival ratio of SFCs was 2.69 (95% CI: 1.98-3.65), significantly higher compared to the 1.76 (95% CI: 1.31-2.36) of FPDs (p<0.00001). The success ratio of FPDs at 1.18 (95% CI: 0.83-1.69) was significantly lower compared to SFCs at 2.36 (95% CI: 1.68-3.33). The clinical performance of LD with 2.42 (CI: 1.16-5.03) was significantly higher compared to ZC with 2.22 (CI: 1.78-2.77) (p<0.00001). The biological, technical, and aesthetic behaviors showed similar clinical outcomes between the CAD/CAM and conventional groups. LD could be a good alternative to zirconia, but its intermediate or persistent clinical performance needs to be evaluated. Overall, zirconia and CAD/CAM techniques must evolve further to outclass the conventional techniques used in the fabrication of SFCs and FPDs.

PURPOSE
This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of implant placement sites on the biomechanical behavior of implant-assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs) using finite element analysis (FEA).
STUDY SELECTION
Two reviewers independently conducted manual searches of the PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest databases for articles investigating implant location in IARPDs using FEA, according to the 2020 Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses statement. Studies published in English up to August 1, 2022, were included in the analysis based on the critical question.
RESULTS
Seven articles meeting the inclusion criteria were systematically reviewed. Six studies investigated mandibular Kennedy Class I and one study investigated mandibular Kennedy Class II. Implant placement reduced the displacement and stress distribution of the IARPD components, including dental implants and abutment teeth, regardless of the Kennedy Class type and dental implant placement site. Most of the included studies showed that, based on the biomechanical behavior, the molar region, rather than the premolar region, is the preferred implant placement site. None of the selected studies investigated the maxillary Kennedy Class I and II.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the FEA regarding mandibular IARPDs, we concluded that implant placement in both the premolar and molar regions improves the biomechanical behaviors of IARPD components, regardless of the Kennedy Class. Implant placement in the molar region results in more suitable biomechanical behaviors compared with implant placement in the premolar region in Kennedy Class I. No conclusion was reached for Kennedy Class II due to the lack of relevant studies.

PURPOSE
This scoping review aimed to systematically map research regarding implant-assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs), and identify existing gaps in knowledge.
STUDY SELECTION
Two reviewers independently conducted a search of the MEDLINE-PubMed and Scopus databases according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for Scoping Review and included articles published in English up to August 31, 2022, including human studies, reviews, and in vitro studies. Expert opinions, animal studies, and clinical studies involving complete overdentures were excluded, and ten aspects for establishing the treatment strategy for IARPDs were examined.
RESULTS
One hundred and twelve articles were chosen. There were two treatment modalities: IARPDs retained by implant- and tooth-supported surveyed single crowns (SCs) or fixed partial dentures (FPDs). In IARPDs retained by tooth-supported surveyed SCs or FPDs, the survival rate of dental implants for IARPDs was relatively higher with a wide range of marginal bone loss and many complications, but with improved functional performance, oral health-related quality of life, and patient satisfaction. There were limited data on survival or success rates and designs of IARPDs, attachment selections, length and diameter, inclination, placement sites, and loading protocols of implants, regardless of prosthetic types. There was limited information on maxillary IARPDs except for survival rates of implants.
CONCLUSIONS
Although IARPDs could become a useful treatment strategy, there is limited scientific consensus with gaps in knowledge about their use. Additional well-designed clinical and in vitro studies are necessary to scientifically establish IARPDs as definitive prostheses in implant dentistry.

INTRODUCTION
Epidemiological studies have shown that tooth loss may be associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. However, some results do not show a significant association. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate this association.
METHODS
Relevant cohort studies were searched in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science (up to May 2022), and the reference lists of retrieved articles. The pooled relative risk () and 95% confidence intervals were computed using a random-effects model (). Heterogeneity was evaluated using the statistic. Publication bias was evaluated using the Begg's and Egger's tests.
RESULTS
Eighteen cohort studies met the inclusion criteria. Original studies with 356,297 participants with an average follow-up of 8.6 years (ranging from 2 to 20 years) were included in this study. The pooled of tooth loss on dementia and cognitive decline were 1.15 (95% : 1.10-1.20; < 0.01, = 67.4%) and 1.20 (95% : 1.14-1.26; = 0.04, = 42.3%), respectively. The results of the subgroup analysis showed an increased association between tooth loss and Alzheimer's disease (AD) ( = 1.12, 95% : 1.02-1.23) and vascular dementia (VaD) ( = 1.25, 95% : 1.06-1.47). The results of the subgroup analysis also showed that pooled RRs varied by geographic location, sex, use of dentures, number of teeth or edentulous status, dental assessment, and follow-up duration. None of the Begg's and Egger's tests or funnel plots showed evidence of publication bias.
DISCUSSION
Tooth loss is associated with a significantly increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia, suggesting that adequate natural teeth are important for cognitive function in older adults. The likely mechanisms mostly suggested include nutrition, inflammation, and neural feedback, especially deficiency of several nutrients like vitamin D.
