The role of total plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in lung cancer (LC) screening with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is uncertain. We hypothesized that cfDNA could support differentiation between malignant and benign nodules observed in LDCT. The baseline cfDNA was measured in 137 subjects of the ITALUNG trial, including 29 subjects with screen-detected LC (17 prevalent and 12 incident) and 108 subjects with benign nodules. The predictive capability of baseline cfDNA to differentiate malignant and benign nodules was compared to that of Lung-RADS classification and Brock score at initial LDCT (iLDCT). Subjects with prevalent LC showed both well-discriminating radiological characteristics of the malignant nodule (16 of 17 were classified as Lung-RADS 4) and markedly increased cfDNA (mean 18.8 ng/mL). The mean diameters and Brock scores of malignant nodules at iLDCT in subjects who were diagnosed with incident LC were not different from those of benign nodules. However, 75% (9/12) of subjects with incident LC showed a baseline cfDNA ≥ 3.15 ng/mL, compared to 34% (37/108) of subjects with benign nodules ( = 0.006). Moreover, baseline cfDNA was correlated ( = 0.001) with tumor growth, measured with volume doubling time. In conclusion, increased baseline cfDNA may help to differentiate subjects with malignant and benign nodules at LDCT.

Keratins are the main structural protein components of wool fibres, and variation in them and their genes () is thought to influence wool structure and characteristics. The PCR-single strand conformation polymorphism technique has been used previously to investigate genetic variation in selected coding and intron regions of the type II sheep keratin gene , but no variation was identified. In this study, we used the same technique to explore the 5' untranslated region of and detected three sequence variants (, and ) that contain four single nucleotide polymorphisms. Among the 389 Merino × Southdown cross sheep investigated, variant was linked to a reduction in clean fleece weight, while was associated with an increase in both greasy fleece weight and clean fleece weight. No discernible effects on staple length or mean-fibre-diameter-related traits were observed. These findings suggest that variation in ovine might influence wool growth by changing the density of wool follicles in the skin, the density of individual fibres, or the area of the skin producing fibre, as opposed to changing the rate of extrusion of fibres or their diameter.

Laparoscopic ovariectomy under general anesthesia was planned in a 10-year-old, 146 kg, apparently healthy female African lion (Panthera leo). The lion was immobilized via intramuscular darts containing midazolam (0.033 mg/kg), medetomidine (50 µg/kg) and ketamine (2.5 mg/kg), and intubated using an endotracheal tube (16 mm internal diameter). The anesthesia was maintained using sevoflurane (0.9-2.1% end-tidal concentration), in combination with remifentanil (0.1 µg/kg/min) and ketamine (11 µg/kg/min) at a constant rate infusion (CRI), with Hartmann's solution (5 mL/kg/hr). Surgery was conducted with stable vital signs, but hypotension (mean arterial blood pressure 55 mmHg) developed, requiring dobutamine treatment. The hypotension was effectively controlled by adjusting dobutamine from 5 µg/kg/min to 0.2 to 0.3 µg/kg/min. This case suggests possibilities that dosages in this range can be clinically useful for peri-anesthetic hypotension in lions.

To comply with environmental regulations, ship operators may adopt exhaust after-treatment devices such as scrubbers or selective catalytic reduction (SCR). Beyond gaseous emission control, these technologies impact the exhaust particles emitted from marine engines to the atmosphere. This study characterizes comprehensively the chemical composition and physical properties of exhaust aerosol particles upstream and downstream a hybrid scrubber operating in open loop mode on-board a modern cruise ship. The study considers two engines, one equipped with SCR and both with scrubber, during engine load conditions of 75 % and 40 %, and the influence of marine gas oil (MGO) use in addition to heavy fuel oil (HFO). At least 4 different particle types were observed in the exhaust based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies both upstream and downstream scrubber, and both scrubber and SCR affected the particle number size distribution (PSD). The geometric mean diameter (GMD) of the particles increased over scrubber both due to removal of nucleation mode particles and particle growth in the scrubber. The scrubber effectively decreased particle number (PN) and, also, non-volatile particles, but the effect depended on particle size and no significant decrease was observed in number of particles above 50 nm, typically comprising black carbon (BC) and in the case of HFO combustion, also asymmetrical metal containing particles. In addition to PN, concentrations of PAH compounds were reduced in the scrubber. The results may be further utilized when including the exhaust aerosol characteristics from ships applying scrubbers to emission inventories, as well as climate and air quality models.

Worldwide meat consumption and production have nearly quintupled in the last 60 years. In this context, research and the application of new technologies related to animal reproduction have evolved in an accelerated way. The objective of the present study was to apply nanoemulsions (NEs) as carriers of lipids to feed bovine embryos in culture media and verify their impact on the development of embryos produced . The NEs were characterized by particle size, polydispersity, size distribution, physical stability, morphology using atomic force microscopy (AFM), surface tension, density, pH, and rheological behavior. The NEs were prepared by the emulsification/evaporation technique. A central composite rotatable design (CCRD) was used to optimize the NE fabrication parameters. The three optimized formulations used in the embryo application showed an emulsion stability index (ESI) between 0.046 and 0.086, which reflects high stability. The mean droplet diameter analyzed by laser diffraction was approximately 70-80 nm, suggesting a possible transit across the embryonic zona pellucida with pores of an average 90 nm in diameter. AFM images clearly confirm the morphology of spherical droplets with a mean droplet diameter of less than 100 nm. The optimized formulations added during the higher embryonic genome activation phase in bovine embryos enhanced early embryonic development.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS
To compare ultra-sonographic dimensions of acoustic target window of the spine in the participants at four different sitting positions namely cross leg sitting (CLP), hamstring stretch (HSP), classical sitting (CSP) and riders sitting position (RSP). The primary objective of this study was to measure the neuraxial acoustic target window (defined as interlaminar distance between L3-L4 lamina). The secondary objective was to compare ultra-sonographic measurements of the depth of ligamentum flavum from the skin, and to compare the diameter of intrathecal space and comfort score in the four different sitting positions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
This study is a prospective observational study. Eighty participants were included and positioned in four different sitting positions to perform an ultra-sonographic scan and measure various parameters of the acoustic neuraxial window. The interlaminar distance, the distance of skin from the ligamentum flavum, and the diameter of the spinal canal or intrathecal space was measured in the L3-L4 intervertebral space in different positions.
RESULTS
The mean value of interlaminar distance among four sitting positions was ranging from 1.40 cm to 1.44 cm ( value 0.725.) The distance of ligamentum flavum from skin and diameter of intrathecal space was also comparable in all the groups. The comfort score in CSP was significantly better when compared to other groups with a median score of 4 ( value < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS
There is no statistically significant difference in interlaminar distance in various sitting positions. All four positions are equally effective and can be used as an alternative to spinal/epidural intervention, but the CSP came out to be the most comfortable and more emphasis should be given to the comfort as it increases the chance of success rate of the procedure.

Dragon fruit (Selenicereus undatus) is a valuable fruit crop in tropical and subtropical regions. It is renowned for its nutritional benefits, such as high sodium, potassium, and vitamin levels, and as a source of prebiotics and antioxidants (Balendres et al. 2019). In July 2023, anthracnose symptoms on stems were detected on dragon fruit plants in Jeju, South Korea. The typical anthracnose symptoms, such as sunken necrotic lesions (5-20 mm in diameter), were seen on the mature stems. The disease incidence ranged from 10% to 12% among the three surveyed greenhouses. To isolate the causative organism, infected stem samples were surface sterilized, cut into small pieces, and placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA). After two days of incubation at 24ºC, white hyphae appeared on the PDA around the plant tissues. Isolates CNU H23009 and CNU H23010 were purified from a single hypha under a stereoscope (e-Xtra Figure 1). Conidial morphology was examined from two-day-old fungal cultures grown on V8 juice agar. The conidia were transparent, aseptate, cylindrical to clavate, with a rounded apex and base, and measured 11.9 - 16.85 × 5.17 - 6.91 μm (mean = 15.28 × 5.93 μm, n = 30). No appressoria was observed. Morphological characteristics indicated the isolates were Colletotrichum sp. matching the description of the C. gloeosporioides species complex (Weir et al. 2012). To further identify the isolates, genomic DNA was extracted and the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), and actin (ACT) were amplified using ITS1/ITS4, GDF/GDR, and ACT-512F/ACT-783R, respectively (Weir et al. 2012). Based on phylogenetic analysis, the isolates clustered with C. aenigma (strains ICMP18608, ICMP18686, CSH2, and QSG1), with 71% bootstrap support, as determined using the maximum parsimony method in PAUP 4.0 (e-Xtra Figure 2). Based on morphological and molecular characteristics, isolates were identified as C. aenigma. Sequences of CNU H23009 and CNU H23010 were deposited in GenBank with accession numbers OR535144 and OR535145 for ITS, OR540725 and OR540726 for GAPDH, and OR540723 and OR540724 for ACT. The pathogenicity was tested on healthy dragon fruit stems using wound inoculation with mycelial plugs of the CNU H23009 isolate. Controls were inoculated with PDA plugs. The plants were covered with plastic bags to maintain humidity and incubated in a greenhouse at 25ºC. After two days, necrotic spots had developed on the inoculated tissues; after four days, black, irregular, and sunken necrotic lesions similar to those seen in the field were observed. No symptoms occurred in the controls. C. aenigma was re-isolated from the artificially inoculated plants and re-identified based on conidial morphology. The pathogenicity test was repeated three times with three replications for each treatment. Previous studies have reported that C. aenigma, C. gloeosoporioides, C. siamense, C. truncatum, and C. karsti cause anthracnose in dragon fruit. However, C. aenigma has been reported only in Thailand (Balendres et al. 2019; Meetum et al. 2015). To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. aenigma causing anthracnose in dragon fruit in Korea.

INTRODUCTION
Various benefits of needleless suture loop techniques in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction graft preparation have been discussed, yet their impact on graft diameter remains unexplored. We hypothesized that the suture loop technique would reduce the graft diameter compared to the conventional locking suture technique.
METHODS
Fifty-seven patients whose grafts were made with the Krackow stitch (group K) and 54 patients with the suture loop (group SL) were analyzed retrospectively. (1) The distal (sutured side) diameter of each anteromedial bundle and posterolateral bundle was compared to the proximal (non-sutured side) diameter, and (2) the average of the proximal and distal graft diameters in each group was calculated.
RESULTS
In group K, 78.9% of anteromedial bundles and 40.3% of posterolateral bundles exhibited a larger distal diameter than the proximal, while in group SL, 42.6% of anteromedial bundles and 3.7% of posterolateral bundles showed a larger distal diameter. In both bundles, there were significantly fewer grafts with larger distal diameters in group SL (p < 0.001). The mean distal diameter of anteromedial bundles was smaller in group SL (6.33 ± 0.43 mm vs. 6.07 ± 0.43 mm, p < 0.005). Consequently, the distal cross-sectional area of anteromedial bundles in group SL was 8% smaller than that in group K.
CONCLUSION
The use of the suture loop technique resulted in a significantly smaller distal diameter of the anteromedial bundle. This reduces the size of the tibial tunnel and may contribute to a reduction in potential damage to adjacent structures.

INTRODUCTION
Belt electrode-skeletal muscle electrical stimulation (B-SES) is a treatment prescribed for individuals with difficulty performing exercise therapy that improves muscle strength, exercise tolerance, and glucose metabolism. However, the effects of B-SES on the hemodynamics of the central and lower extremity conduit arteries have not been studied. Therefore, this study compared the acute effects of B-SES on the central and lower extremity conduit arteries in healthy young males.
METHODS
This randomized crossover study included nine healthy young males (mean age: 21.0±1.1 years). Participants were assigned to the following experimental conditions, with a washout period of one week: condition 1 included 20 min of electrical stimulation of the lower extremity at the participant's sensation threshold intensity (Sham, n=9) and condition 2 included 20 min of electrical stimulation of the lower extremity at the maximum intensity the participant can tolerate (B-SES, n=9). The heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and total peripheral vascular resistance (TPR) were measured as central hemodynamics. The hemodynamics of the lower extremity conduit arteries were measured and calculated for the shallow femoral artery (SFA), including vessel diameter, mean blood flow velocity (MBFV), shear rate (SR), and mean blood flow (MBF) rate. These indices were measured before stimulation (Pre), 10 min after the start of stimulation (Stimulating), and immediately after the end of stimulation (Post). These indices were compared using a repeated two-way analysis of variance.
RESULTS
In B-SES, HR (Pre: 63.2±8.6; Stimulating: 73.7±6.9; Post: 70.0±4.2 bpm, p<0.01), CO (Pre: 5.1±1.0; Stimulating: 6.5±1.5, p<0.01; Post: 6.3±1.2 L/min, p=0.02), and MAP (Pre: 104.0±11.5; Stimulating: 116.4±10.8, p<0.01; Post: 109.6±9.7 mmHg, p=0.02) increased significantly. In addition, B-SES significantly increased MBFV (Pre: 19.2±4.0; Stimulating: 50.5±14.9; Post: 30.1±4.0 cm/s p<0.01), SR (Pre: 118.9±28.8; Stimulating: 302.7±91. 2, p<0.01; Post: 182.1±70.1/s, p=0.02), and MBF (Pre: 382.0±61.5; Stimulating: 1009.6±321.4; Post: 626.8±176.6 mL/min, p<0.01). However, there were no significant changes in SV and TPR.
CONCLUSIONS
The findings of this study indicate that B-SES in healthy young males increases CO without increasing SV or TPR and improves the MBFV and SR in the SFA.

Evaluating fluid responsiveness with dynamic parameters is recommended for fluid management. However, in hemodynamically stable patients who are breathing spontaneously, accurately measuring stroke volume variation via echocardiography and passive leg raising is challenging due to subtle SV changes. This study aimed to identify normal SV changes in healthy volunteers and evaluate the precision of hemodynamic parameters in screening mild hypovolemia in patients. This prospective, repeated-measures, cross-sectional study screened 269 subjects via echocardiography. Initially, 45 healthy volunteers underwent a fluid challenge test, the outcomes of which served as criteria to screen 215 ICU patients. Among these patients, 53 underwent additional fluid challenge testing. Hemodynamic parameters, including medians of maximum velocity time integrals (VTImaxs), peak velocity of VTImax (PV), internal jugular vein diameters (IJVD), and area (IJVA) were repeatedly measured first at a 60° upper body elevation (UBE), second in a supine position, third at UBE, fourth in a supine position, and lastly in a supine position after fluid loading. The hemodynamic responses to the position changes were compared between 83 fluid non-responders and 15 fluid responders. Fluid responsiveness was defined as fluid-induced medians' change of VTImaxs (fluid-induced median VTImax change) ≥ 10%. None of the healthy volunteers showed the mean value of repeatedly measured medians of VTImaxs ≥ 7%, following either UBE position (UBE-induced median VTImax change) or fluid loading (fluid-induced median VTImax change). UBE-induced median VTImax and PV changes were significantly correlated with fluid responsiveness (p < 0.001, AUC 0.959; p < 0.001, AUC 0.804). The significant correlations were demonstrated via multivariable analysis using binary logistic regression (p = 0.001, OR 90.1) and the correlation coefficient (R = 0.793) using linear regression analysis. UBE-induced median VTImax changes (≥ 11.8% and 7.98%) predicted fluid-induced median VTImax changes ≥ 10% and 7% (AUC 0.959 and 0.939). The collapsibility and variation of IJVD and IJVA showed no significant correlation. An increase in the mean value of medians of repeatedly measured VTImaxs transitioning from an UBE to a supine position, effectively screened mild hypovolemia and demonstrated a significant correlation with fluid responsiveness in spontaneously breathing patients maintaining hemodynamic stability.
